From April 1983 to July 1984, a series of sadistic sex attacks were perpetrated on women and young girls on trains or near train stations on three routes from Central London to the South-East of England and Kent, they were the Bexleyheath Line, the North Kent Line and the Dartford Loop. This prolific serial rapist never disguised his face, he attacked in broad daylight, and he stuck to the areas he knew so well. But who was he?

On Friday the 20th of July 1973, a kind and frail 75-year-old spinster called Mary Hynds was last seen entering her ground floor lodging at 4 Willes Road in Kentish Town, London. The next morning her body was discovered; she had been strangled and beaten violently about the head in a killing which has similarities to the murders of Adele Price, Isabella Griffiths and Father Anthony Crean. On Sunday the 8th of July 1973, 17-year-old German tourist Heidi Mnilk boarded the 4:57pm train to Hayes at Charing Cross station. At 5:08pm, just 90 seconds outside of London Bridge station, a scream was heard, she was stabbed and her body was thrown onto the tracks at Bermondsey. 

Her murder has never been solved. But on Thursday 17th of April at Brixton Prison, serial killer Patrick MacKay (awaiting trial for the murders of Adele Price, Isabella Griffith and Father Anthony Crean) confessed to "killing eleven people". On Monday 23rd of August 1971 at 9:40am, a gang of armed robbers stole £166,000 (£3.2 million today) from Preston’s Jewellers in Blackpool, and in their haste to escape, three officers were shot, many were injured, and Detective Superintendent Gerry Richardson was shot. The gang’s leader, Frederick Sewell, a gangster known as ‘Fat Fred’ was branded ‘Britain’s most hates man’ and hunted.

But what had this killing spree got to do with the murder of Malcolm Heaysman, co-owner of a fancy-dress shop in Islington outside of his remote farmhouse in Gwynfe near Llangadog, Carmarthenshire?

On Tuesday 29th of September 1971, Malcolm Heaysman, co-owner of a fancy-dress shop in Islington was brutally murdered outside of his remote farmhouse in Gwynfe near Llangadog, Carmarthenshire. Being 40 days into a 45 day man hunt, Police were seeking Britain’s no1 villain infamously known as ‘Fat Fred’ having stolen £3.2 million in a jewellery heist, and in a 3 mile car chase, he sparked a national outrage by killing a policeman, and attempting to kill three others. But what connected him to the murder of this mild-mannered fancy-dress shop owner?

This hostel marks the final attack of a horrific rapist, kidnapper, paedophile, alleged necrophile and an almost triple murderer. It’s a case which caused uproar in a community, destroyed several families, and three lives which would be changed forever, yet it was barely reported and it remains forgotten. The killer came from nowhere, which begs the question, what led him to do the evil things he did?

It's an incredible twist and it's almost as if they were related, but they weren't. There is a correction in this episode.

As a simple plan with no law broken and nobody hurt, it was a gentlemanly reaction to a dastardly crime by a criminal who they felt deserved worse. Across the morning of Tuesday 11th of November 1941, from 8:50am to 10:20am, an armed man dressed in grey went on a killing spree across Chiswick, Hammersmith and Acton armed with two shotguns. It seemed like he was picking off random people, but having spent months rehearsing and surveilling his targets, his mission had a purpose. Of so he thought.

On Sunday 5th of November 1978, at a little after 5:30pm, two women stood at a bus stop on Sydney Place in Kensington, SW7, waiting for the rush hour bus. Having been close friends for decades, there seemed to be an odd friction between them, and although their issue was of a personal nature, within minutes, one would be a wanted criminal on the run, and the other would be shot dead. 1st August 1970, 20-year-old Mary McCormack of Limerick was found strangled in her ground floor flat at 85 Talgarth Road in Baron’s Court, W14. With no signs of a break-in, the police suspected it was either a client who she let in, or a tenant with a key. But did the Police convict the right man?

On Sunday 31st July 1949, just before midnight, Michael Martin unleashed a violent attack on a defenceless 53-year-old prostitute known locally as ‘Mona’. To the press, it seemed like an all-too-familiar story of a destitute woman who was brutally murdered by a horny drunken punter, but with time and infirmity catching up with all of us, this anonymous streetwalker’s death marked the end of an amazing criminal.
