We dive into J. Michael Straczynski’s audacious five-year blueprint for Babylon 5, and how it helped invent the modern showrunner/fandom feedback loop. Then it’s on to Buffy the Vampire Slayer — the series that rewrote the emotional architecture of genre TV and launched a writer’s room that would shape the next twenty years of storytelling.

After that comes the rise of cable: Angel, Stargate SG-1, Carnivàle, and the 2005 Doctor Who revival becoming proof that genre could be ambitious, sincere, and mainstream. And finally, the 2000s network scramble — the adrenaline of 24, the puzzle-box frenzy of Lost, the heartbreak of Firefly, the ambition of Battlestar Galactica, and the improbable triumph of Fringe.

All of it leads to the blueprint that streaming would later inherit — and occasionally break — as binge culture transformed how we watched, talked, and obsessed.

Jules recently completed work on Season 2 of the Emmy-winning Percy Jackson and the Olympians, returning to the show as it expands its scale, environments and action. He’s the only cinematographer to work across both current seasons, and while production is on a short Christmas hiatus, he’ll be heading back to Vancouver in the new year as Season 3 continues filming.

In 'Star Trek: Section 31', Emperor Philippa Georgiou (Yeoh) joins a secret division of Starfleet tasked with protecting the United Federation of Planets and must face the sins of her past. 

Shauna and Ryan previously worked together on ‘Star Trek: Discovery’, which earned Shauna an Emmy nomination, so while familiar with the universe in ‘Star Trek: Section 31’, they got to explore a section in space that we haven't seen in any Star Trek universe. As the film is set outside of Starfleet space, there were no pre-existing looks, and the team could really explore and push the envelope, which was perfectly showcased in the club scenes featuring party hair and makeup looks from across space.

They also created multiple captivating looks for the main cast, including the two club looks for Rachel (Kacey Rohl), which are so different from her more natural look featured in the rest of the film that the audience can barely recognise her. For Michelle Yeoh's character, they also worked closely with her and the costume designer to create an edgy and glamorous look for a former ruthless empress unlike her clean star fleet member look from ‘Star Trek: Discovery’.

Shauna’s other previous work includes shows such as ‘Lost Girl’, ‘Killjoys’, ‘Private Eyes’ and ‘Frankie Drake Mysteries’, whilst Ryan has worked on ‘Pachinko’, ‘The Umbrella Academy’, ‘The Strain’, and ‘Defiance’. Their current project is the upcoming series, ‘Star Trek: Starfleet Academy’.

Predictably for Gray, as it's the start of the year, that means his TV chat includes 'Traitors' and 'Traitors US' which both returned for new seasons. He also discusses the return of 'Am I Being Unreasonable?' for a second season, and the new 'Motherland' spin-off series 'Amandaland', and Channel 4's 'Patience'. Dave and Gray also heap high praise on 'High Potential', and rejoice over the return of 'Hacks' to the UK. Meanwhile, Dave discusses three new game releases - the city builder 'Foundation', RPG 'Kingdom Come: Deliverance II', and the return of the daddy of the turn-based strategy game, 'Civilization 7'. As we've been off for a few weeks, we have a lot to cover, and Matt dives in with some of the things he watched whilst we've been away, including his thoughts on the 'Gavin and Stacey' finale, catching 'An Evening with Dua Lipa', and catching up on both '9-1-1' and '9-1-1: Lone Star'. He also discusses the issues with trying to play through the original version of 'The Last Of Us' on the original PS3, which surprisingly, is something he has never done before. Meanwhile, Dave is back from his trip to LA... where everything was unexpectedly on fire... so he gives his thoughts on that experience. However, he also caught up on some new TV series including 'Paradise' and 'High Potential' on Disney+, along with new seasons of 'The Night Agent' on Netflix, and 'Severance' & 'Mythic Quest' on Apple TV+.

2024 has been another spectacular year for TV both in the UK and around the world. We've also seen a great selection of video game and films over the last 12 months, and The Geektown Awards gave visitors to our website the opportunity to vote on what they thought were the best, and which TV, films, and video games they were looking forward to in 2025. I want to give a big "Thank You!" to all the thousands of people who took the time to vote in the awards this year.

Whilst some categories gave results we could have guessed (I'm looking at you, "Most Anticipated Game Of 2025..."), there were some big surprises too. We also had some really close voting, with some of the top three spots having less than 1% between them in some places. We also have the shows which were voted this year's top ten TV series of all time!

Gray steps in as a last-minute replacement for Matt, who has come down with some sort of lurgy (get well soon!), and amazingly actually has a film review, as he went to see 'Wicked' this week. He also chats about catching up with some TV shows such as 'Doctor Odyssey', 'A Man on the Inside', 'The Diplomat', 'Smoggie Queens', 'Cheaters', and... 'Is It Cake?'... Meanwhile, Dave chats about catching up with the latest series of 'Outlander', along with finally stepping into the acclaimed Netflix animated series 'Arcane'. He also reviews whether the new Paramount+ prequel series 'Dexter: Original Sin' manages to "kill it" with its opening episode.

As always Darryl brings an interesting mix of mainstream and slightly more obscure film and TV reviews along with him! Firstly he kicks off with the movie 'Werewolves Within', which is available now on demand, and follows that with his review of the recently released Prime Video series 'Cross'. He has also picked up the first season of Netflix dramedy 'The Lincoln Lawyer', and moves on to a new legal drama which has recently dropped onto Sky Witness and NOW, 'Matlock'. Meanwhile, Dave reviews the new Netflix (and surprisingly festive!) thriller from the brilliant Joe Barton, 'Black Doves' starring Keira Knightley and Ben Whishaw, along with the really fun new Disney+ series 'Star Wars: Skeleton Crew'. He also chats about what he got up to at the recent MCM Comic Con Birmingham.

Over in the news updates, we have one cancellation and a surprising number of renewals for the time of year, including the Paramount hiring 'The Agency' again, more adult adventures on Disney+ from Jilly Cooper, and more murdering from the ubiquitous Ella Purnell. It's been a number of weeks since Gray has been on due to his schedule being rather manic over the last few weeks, but he's finally back and brings with him a stack of TV reviews. We chat about a couple of recent Netflix series, 'Nobody Wants This' which stars Kristen Bell and Adam Brody, along with 'Perfect Couple', the latest series starring Nicole Kidman, alongside Liev Schreiber. He also runs through a host of other series he's been catching up with recently. Meanwhile, having finally come to the end of his Baldur's Gate 3 run, brings a review of Frostpunk 2. On the TV side, he reviews the wonderfully weird 'Interior Chinatown' on Disney+, and the new Ted Danson/Michael Schur Netflix comedy 'A Man On The Inside'.

Matt returns to the show, with TV, film and game reviews! First up is 'Umbrella Academy' Season 4, which has been out for a while, but he has only just gotten around to watching. He also reviews 'Joker: Folie à Deux'... does he hate it as much as everyone else? Lastly, we have 'Final Fantasy VII Rebirth', the first of the FF series to actually "click" with Matt. Meanwhile, Dave has TV and game reviews, although unfortunately, there were some recording issues and his mic is a little more "echoey" than normal, so apologies for that! However, he does have reviews of 'Tracker', 'Devil’s Hour' and 'Silo', both of which returned recently for second seasons, along with new Prime Video drama 'Cross', plus some discussion about 'Baldur's Gate 3'.

We discussed a few months ago how the soap was about to go through some massive changes which included firing half the cast and a big shake-up in format and storylines. Now that has all happened, Matt updates us with his thoughts on how it has been going for the 30-year-old series. It was a holiday this week in the USA, which means Robert returns to the show and has his usual eclectic mix of TV and games to chat about. He is currently on something of a cooking show binge and highlights one particular series, 'Crime Scene Kitchen', hosted by Joel McHale. We also discuss the mass of sports on US TV at the moment, particularly the state of the WMBA following the departure of star player Caitlin Clark. On the gaming front, he chats about the 'Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster'. Meanwhile, Dave has been catching a slew of season finales, including Apple's 'Bad Monkey' and 'Slow Horses', Season 2 of Prime Video's 'Rings Of Power', along with Season 1 of 'Ludwig'. Based on James Clavell’s novel, FX’s 'Shōgun' is set in Japan in the year 1600 at the dawn of a century-defining civil war. Lord Yoshii Toranaga is fighting for his life as his enemies on the Council of Regents unite against him, when a mysterious European ship is found marooned in a nearby fishing village...

It is an outstanding drama, available on Hulu in the USA, and on Disney+ in the UK and other territories. It's well worth watching and catching up if you haven't seen it yet, as it appears it will be returning for two more seasons following its record-breaking Emmy win.

Born and raised in Quebec to a Haitian mother and French Canadian father, Sharlene was a dancer from the ages of 7 to 18, before moving into modelling and acting. However, following a meeting with legendary Stunt Coordinator, Alan Oliney, she was encouraged to try stunt work, and found her calling. She soon became a very sought-after stunt performer being requested to double stars such as Halle Berry, Rosario Dawson, Vanessa Williams and many more.

On 'Shōgun', Sharlene discusses her work on the epic drama as Assistant Stunt Coordinator, working alongside her boss (and life-partner) Lauro David Chartrand-Del Valle, developing the hugely complex Emmy-winning “cannon” scene, melding VFX, physical effects and stunts for the “earthquake”, plus location scouting, stunt coordinating in the pandemic and lots more.

If that wasn’t enough, Sharlene was also Assistant Stunt Coordinator on season one of the hit CBS drama ‘Tracker’, for which she became the first Black, Female Stunt Coordinator to win a Leo Award from The Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Foundation of British Columbia. She talks about working with lead actor Justin Hartley (and his photographic memory), and also working with Justin alongside guest star Jenson Ackles... who sound like they were as much fun together as you'd expect!
