Miami Showband Massacre Survivor Des Lee

On July 31st 1975 the Miami Showband were making their way back to Dublin from a a gig in Banbridge when they were stopped at what they believed to be a British Army checkpoint at Buskhill. It was a bogus checkpoint manned by loyalist terrorists members of the UVF who attempted to plant a bomb on the band's minibus. What followed was one of the worst atrocities of the troubles. The bomb prematurely exploded killing two terrorists before three band members were shot to pieces in the mayhem that followed. Incredibly Stephen Travers and Des Lee somehow survived. To coincide with the 50th anniversary of the Miami Showband Massacre, Des Lee joined Gerry Kelly on his Late Lunch Show on the publication of his life story "My Saxophone Saved My Life".

To mark this special anniversary, Mother Mary is once more honoured with the unveiling of her new statue at Boyle O'Reilly in Drogheda, adjacent to the wonderful hospital she founded all those years ago. And to mark the occasion, we republish a documentary, written and produced by Gerry Kelly and first aired a decade ago in 2015, about the life of one of Ireland's truly great daughters.

Remembering Eileen

Following a smear test, Eileen Rushe had cell abnormalities, however, there were failures in her subsequent treatment which resulted in a cervical cancer diagnoses in late 2018. We spoke with Eileen on Late Lunch about her situation as she began treatment in January 2019 and this incredible woman joined us subsequently from time to time to speak about the highs and lows of her cancer journey. Our final conversation was just over a month ago as sadly Eileen passed away in recent days. As a tribute to her bravery in the face of adversity here's a compilation of those conversations with Eileen - May She Rest in Peace...

The IMRO Awards 2021 Radio Moment of the Year - Saved by an Angel

Early on the morning of Sunday November 1st 2020, a young mother stood on the Castlebellingham Flyover on the M1 Motorway about to jump. Bronwyn McLoughlin happened to be passing, stopped, intervened, saved her life but slipped away quietly as assistance and family members arrived on the scene. Receiving help subsequently and now feeling much better, she was desperate to make contact with the woman who she describes as her “Angel”. She called into LMFM looking to speak with Late Lunch Presenter Gerry Kelly which she did on the afternoon of Friday December 11th, hoping the woman in question would come forward. Over the weekend Bronwyn heard the podcast of the interview, contacted Gerry on Monday morning, also willing to come on air that afternoon and share her side of the story. The woman she saved also returned and the pair spoke for the first time since that fateful day six weeks previously, in a radio moment that will live long in the memory.

Thursday January 18th 2018 is a day that Jackie Fox and her family have to live and deal with for the rest of their lives. It was a day no one ever wishes to experience because on that day Jackie's daughter Nicole died by suicide. Nicole was bullied to death and now almost two years on Jackie tells her story and has almost succeeded in changing the existing law relating to bullying which dates back to 1997 with "Coco's Law" in memory of Nicole.

Alice Turner Takes Her Chance

When fifteen months old back in 2013 Alice Turner was diagnosed with Neuroblastoma. A long road lay ahead but thanks to family, friends and the wider community "A Chance for Alice" was launched raising hundreds of thousands of euro to send the little girl to America for specialist treatment. Today Alice no longer needs to go to the United States and her future care will now take place in Ireland. Alice and Mum Lyndsey popped in for a chat with Gerry on Late Lunch...
