My Midwife

Molly's midwife Robin, who helped her through her TFMR in December, is retiring after 44 years of bringing babies into this world.

Robin is a Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM). She graduated from Columbia University with a bachelor’s degree in nursing 1977, and from SUNY Downstate Midwifery School in 1985. Thanks to years as a labor and delivery nurse, early contacts with pioneers in obstetrics as well as her own experience as a midwife, Robin has witnessed, and contributed to profound advancements in how women give birth.

We learn about the family triad, transracial adoption, open adoption, home study, adoption language, money money money money, and cheese caves.

If you've ever shared about your struggle to get pregnant, chances are you've been asked "why don't you just adopt"? As if it was easy. The truth is, the word just does not belong before the word adoption. You don't just decide to adopt and then go home with a baby. There's paperwork, advertising, legal fees, medical bills, home studies, tens of thousands of dollars and waiting. Lots and lots of waiting.

TFMR: Lyndsay’s Story

TFMR stands for Terminating a Wanted Pregnancy. It's what I had to do. And what it turns out, thousands of women have to do all the time. It's tragic, but what’s almost as tragic is that many of these women do not feel like they can be open about their experience. On top of the excruciating pain of their loss they also have to hide the truth of their circumstances and suffer in silence. I hope by talking about my experience and sharing other stories of TFMR, that these women will feel safe and supported.

Jude is a talented stand-up and even teaches stand-up comedy at USC and Holly is a fabulous improviser and in the cast of "Live From Here" on NPR, and unlike my other "childfree by choice" guests, neither Jude nor Holly has ever ever ever felt the urge to have kids...not even when they were little ones themselves.

We dive into their youths to see where these preferences may have come from and we dig into how this has affected them in their adult lives.

So serious!! But if you listen to the whole thing you'll also hear about double penetration!

Should I just tell you right here? Fine! I want a baby. The only problem is I'm 39, single, and not exactly ready for motherhood. So I'm on a quest - a quest for a sperm donor, and a quest for some personal growth. Each week you'll hear interviews with potential donors, but I'll also seek guidance from the pros: financial advisors, tarot card readers...whatever it takes. By the end of this series, if all goes according to plan, I'll find my donor and inseminate myself. Join me for the journey!
