Episode 109 and I’m joined by Jerard. Jerard enlisted back in 2012, but this isn’t your standard service story.

Just 3 months in, a serious injury changed everything. What followed was years of setbacks—spinal surgery, re-injuries, being pushed beyond medical advice… and constantly fighting to be heard.

And still—he showed up. Training others as an ADI, completing heavy vehicle quals, even supporting SASR in 2017.

Behind the scenes though, it was a battle.

Airlifts. Heart surgery. Time in the Soldier Recovery Centre. And the weight of it all mentally. All while raising a young family and navigating life falling apart outside the uniform.

He medically discharged in 2019—after a career that tested him in every way possible. This is a story of resilience, grit, and pushing through when everything’s stacked against you.

Episode 107 and I’m joined by Taula Daure, better known as Franckiie.

Born in Papua New Guinea and raised through hardship after losing his mum at just 4, Franckiie grew up without his dad, before reconnecting with him later in life, a powerful full-circle moment.

Moving to Australia in 2005, he faced setbacks and tough moments, but he didn’t let them define him. He reset, he refocused and he found purpose in the ADF.

Enlisting in 2012 as a Recovery Mechanic, Franckiie became part of the backbone that keeps everything moving. After a medical discharge, he continued giving back through defence contracting and instruction, now settled on the Sunshine Coast.

Episode 106 and I’m joined by Brenden ‘Chuck’ Berry. Brenden Berry is a former Australian soldier, instructor, and Australian Border Force firearms and defensive tactics trainer, with nearly 40 years of service behind him.

A third-generation cavalryman, Brenden enlisted in 1989 and served across multiple units including 3/4 Cavalry Regiment, 2RAR, and 3RAR. His deployments include Rwanda during the UN mission following the genocide, East Timor, and Iraq with SECDET 9.

Alongside his military career, Brenden represented both the Australian Army and state rugby, while also serving as an instructor shaping the next generation of soldiers. After discharging from full-time service, he continued giving back spending a decade training officers within the Australian Border Force.

Episode 105 and I’m joined by Tod. Tod is a former Australian Army Combat Engineer who served 12 years in the Corps from 2009–2021.

Starting his career as a young Sapper, Tod spent his early years on the tools as a Combat Engineer before transitioning into the civil construction side of the trade, eventually rising through the ranks to Corporal.

Across his time in service he was involved in a huge range of work — from AACAP projects in remote communities around Australia, to major exercises like Hamel and Cultana, and operational tasks including:

• Refurbishment works at Navy Dive School – Shoalwater Bay

• Infrastructure builds on Nauru

• Flood relief operations in Port Macquarie

Tod also spent two years posted to the School of Military Engineering at Holsworthy as an instructor, helping train and mentor the next generation of Combat Engineers coming through the Corps.

But this episode goes deeper than just the jobs and deployments.

We talk about life in the Army, the challenges that come with service, the personal battles along the way, and what life looks like on the other side.

Episode 104 and I’m joined by Keegsy. Keegsy signed up to the Australian Army in 2009 at just 17 years old, joining the Infantry and posting to 8/9 RAR. In 2010, he deployed to Timor — a young digger getting his first taste of operational service early in his career.

By 2012, Keegsy was heading to Malaysia alongside 6RAR, continuing to build experience, strengthen his skills, and forge the kind of mateship only infantry life can create. After four solid years in green, Keegsy discharged in 2013, stepping into a new mission — building a career as a mechanic and navigating the transition to life on civvy street.

From joining the Army as a teenager, to deployment, to life after service we dive into the journey, the lessons learned, the brotherhood, and what it really looks like to transition young.

Raised in a military household, Michael grew up witnessing the long-term effects of service firsthand. His father served 35 years in the Australian Army, also being as a Vietnam veteran.

Like many defence families, the impact of untreated PTSD shaped life at home in ways that lasted for years.

After decades battling addiction, Michael spent 13 years in prison. But that wasn’t the end of his story — it was the turning point.

Since his release, he’s rebuilt his life from the ground up and now speaks openly about addiction, incarceration, trauma, accountability, and what true rehabilitation actually

Episode 101 and I’m joined by Ryan. Ryan enlisted in 2009, marched out of Kapooka in 2010 and posted to 3RAR. He completed Basic Parachute Course, Assault Pioneer Course, deployed to Afghanistan with MTF-5, later qualified as a Combat Engineer before transferring to become an ADF Firefighter with 6 Aviation Regiment.

Medically discharged in 2017 with physical and mental injuries, Ryan did what many struggle to do — he rebuilt. He faced his demons, sorted his injuries, and turned pain into purpose.

Since leaving the Army he’s run operations for Veteran Mentors, opened his own strength & conditioning facility (REVL Training), and now serves as Co-Founder & Director of The Youth Regiment, backed by Campsie RSL — launching this April to give young Aussies discipline, direction and accountability.

Episode 99 and I’m joined by Tooney. Tooney originally applied to join the RAAF as an Airfield Defence Guard, he instead enlisted into the Australian Army as a Rifleman in 2007. While at Kapooka, he trade-transferred into Air Dispatch, marching out with the Royal Australian Corps of Transport and posting to 176 Air Dispatch Squadron after training at Puckapunyal.

In 2008, an injury cut his Basic Parachute Course short — but it never slowed him down. Away from service life, he earned selection in the Australian Army Rugby Union and Australian Services Rugby Union teams, representing Australia through to 2012

Highlights include playing in NZ on ANZAC Day (Brumbies v Hurricanes curtain raiser), the PACMIL Cup, and facing the US Services team.

Episode 91 and I’m joined by Josh. Josh has packed plenty into both service and civvy life. He enlisted in 2009, smashed out IETs as a Steward at HMAS Cerberus, posted to 5RAR, then back to Cerberus to play footy and re-trade as a Cook before heading to 7CSSB.

He discharged in 2015, but kicked off his own business within 3 months and has been very successful in the PT and the sports science field! Episode 90 and I’m joined by Zian. Zian enlisted in 2010 at just 17, kicked off her paperwork at 16, and hit the ground running.

She was thrown into Artillery straight out of Kapooka, hated it, got sick, and fought her way back to clerks where she felt she belonged. From 2CER to HQ 1 DIV/DJFHQ, she found her passion for policy and keeping the Army machine moving. A deployment on Op Hawick in 2014, a promo posting to 6 RAR in 2015, and key admin roles right across the battalion, she smashed every job put in front of her.

From Kapooka to SOI during the COVID chaos, she balanced huge workloads as a single mum before separating in 2021 after more than a decade of service. Zian’s story is raw, honest, and full of grit.

Episode 88 and I’m joined by Pete. Pete kicked off his Army journey back in July 2002 and went on to serve right through to 2019, a massive 17-year career that took him across some of the most specialised and demanding roles in the ADF. Pete started out in the Royal Australian Artillery with 108 Battery, working as a gun number before stepping forward into the FO world. In 2007 he completed a Clerk course to help fill a growing admin gap, then pushed himself even further becoming a JTAC in 2008, serving across 4 RAR and 2 Div until 2011. He then chased the next challenge with Selection West (2011–12) before moving into the intelligence space. From 2012 to 2017 Pete worked deep inside HUMINT and later stepped into an expanded HUMINT role with 1 INT in 2018, deploying into the South China Sea. From artillery to special operations pathways and intelligence collection, Pete’s career touches almost every corner of modern Army operations. Episode 87 and I’m joined by Chris. Chris enlisted in January 2001 at just 19 years old. After finishing school and trying a few different jobs, he joined the Army as an Infantryman with 5/7 RAR in Darwin. Soon after, he was part of Operation Relex following the Tampa boat incident, right around the time of 9/11. He went on to deploy to East Timor in 2002 as an assault gunner, then to Iraq in 2004 with SECDET V, where his team faced regular contact and attacks.

In 2006, he deployed to Afghanistan with 1RTF as part of the Company Signals Detachment and returned again in 2008 as a Section Commander with 1MRTF under 7RAR, during one of the battalion’s toughest tours. After returning home, Chris became an instructor at 1RTB Kapooka, shaping the next generation of soldiers, before a back injury led him to transfer to the Military Police, serving in Darwin, DFCE, and Brisbane.

After almost 20 years of dedicated service, he discharged in 2020 — a career defined by leadership, loyalty, and resilience.

Episode 80 and I’m joined by J. At just 19, he joined the Cavalry and served four years in the Australian Army, with postings in Adelaide and Puckapunyal. Even before enlisting, he had a passion for helping others traveling to Papua New Guinea with a church group to help build vital infrastructure. After his time in uniform, he spent several years in construction while raising a young family. Determined to continue serving in new ways, he undertook medic and close protection training before self-deploying to Burma. There, he spent months on the ground in 2024, taking on multiple roles in challenging conditions. Since returning, he has founded a charity dedicated to supporting the Burmese people including delivering much-needed ambulances and medical aid.

Episode 79 and I’m joined by Brodie. Brodie enlisted in the Australian Army in September 2008. Following initial training he was posted to B Squadron, 3rd/4th Cavalry Regiment, B Squadron and deployed to Afghanistan as part of MTF-3. During the deployment, he operated in various roles including driver, rear gunner, and support within HQ MSS and 2 Troop MSS across multiple FOBs. Post-deployment, he was posted to the 2nd/14th Light Horse Regiment (QMI) in Brisbane, serving in both C and B Squadrons until 2015. He then transferred to the Royal Australian Army Medical Corps and undertook 18–21 months of combat medic training at Latchford Barracks. Upon qualification, he was posted to the 2nd General Health Battalion, 1 Surgical Company, working in the nursing department and later in the Emergency Department as an evacuation medic. In 2018, he deployed on TAJI 8 as an ED medic, evacuation medic, and PMV driver. Following this, he supported domestic operations during the bushfire crisis and COVID-19 pandemic as part of Operation Corona, including deployments to Christmas Island and Howard Springs.

He later discharged from the Army in 2021. He has worked for various paramedic companies, DVA and Open Arms as a mental health intake clinician. He is now an actor and stay at home Dad.

Episode 76 and I’m joined by Adel. Adel is an Egyptian born Australian who migrated to Australia with his family in 1970. He joined the Australian Regular Army in 1974. Throughout his 38 years of service, he attained every Non-Commissioned Officers rank, and became a Warrant Officer in 1990.

He also became an Advanced Arabic Linguist within the Australian Defence Force. After he retired from Defence in 2011, he worked as the Senior Pensions Officer with RSL NSW until he and his wife moved to Queensland in 2014. After arriving in Queensland, he has spent time on multiple RSL Boards, these days he is currently serving as the President of the Board of Directors at the Gympie RSL.

Pk is the President of Young Veterans Sunshine Coast, he is a well-being officer for Beerwah RSL and a stakeholder group member for the Veterans Royal Commission. He is a member of QLD veterans consultive forum. He is also the owner of ‘The Local’ in Beerwah and is the CEO and founder of the Veterans charity VWF.

Episode 74 and I’m joined by Shaun. Shaun joined the Clearance Diving branch in 1994 and was posted to HMAS penguin where he finished his basic training in 1995. He was then posted to Team 4 in WA and started his career that over the years slowly streamed into Explosive Ordnance Disposal. He went on operations to the Solomon Islands, PNG, Kiribati, the African coast, the Middle East, Afghanistan and Nepal. In 2018 whilst deployed in Japan he injured his shoulder. As a result of his injuries, he was medically discharged in 2020. Living in the Gympie area now, he found an organisation called PTSD Dogs Australia where he was lucky enough to be taken in, and given an amazing Dog named Blaze.

Episode 73 and I’m joined by Rex. Rex joined the 42nd RQR in early 1981. By the end of 1981 he has joined the regular army as a combat engineer. After being posted to the school of engineering, he spent time in Townsville before he was involved in a horrible motorcycle accident on his way to work, leaving him to spend 12 months in various hospitals recovering. He was then medically discharged.

Following his discharge he pursued a career as an advocate working for fellow veterans. He is now the president of the Military Brotherhood Motorcycle Club on the Cooloola Coast. The MBMMC was formed in 2009 and there are over 30 sub branches Australia wide. The club is an ESO and Non for Profit. They have trained Advocates who can assist in wellbeing matters and compassion claims. They assist with veteran homelessness and work with other organisations like Open Arms, Legacy, RSL’s and Young Veterans.

Episode 72 and I’m joined by Josh. Josh joined the ADF in January 2014 as a rifleman, after basic and school of infantry training Josh was posted to 6 RAR. During the time at 6 RAR Josh participated in numerous exercises and operations domestically and in the Middle East. In May 2022 Josh was medically discharged with multiple physical and mental injuries and found his calling in dogs, in particular working dogs. He has since started his own business in K9 development for agencies and has developed numerous dogs and helped develop several dogs for service in state agencies. As of late he has found a calling in trying to support anti-poaching units in Africa as much as possible.

Episode 71 and I’m joined by Glen. Glen is a former Combat Engineer who served in the Royal Australian Engineers from 2000 to 2012, discharging at the rank of Sergeant. His military career included deployments on Operation Relex, RTF-4 (Afghanistan), and with engineer training teams, where he delivered Search and EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) training to foreign militaries. Specialising as an Explosive Ordnance Reconnaissance (EOR) Technician, Glen led teams in complex, high-pressure environments requiring precision, courage, and leadership. Following his transition from full-time service, he worked as a contractor supporting the ADF in training and logistics roles across Australia and the Middle East, before spending six years in FIFO construction. Now a qualified social worker with a Bachelor of Social Work and Graduate Certificate in Community Development, Glen is the founder of TribeWell and Director of Veterans MMA. These veteran-led initiatives deliver therapeutic support, peer mentoring, and youth resilience programs that blend lived experience with professional care.

Episode 70 and I'm joined by Corey. Corey joined the Australian Army in 2006, midway through a boiler-making apprenticeship. He began his service with the 42nd Royal Queensland Regiment in North Queensland and by 2009 was given the opportunity to transfer to full-time service. After completing his trade, he was posted to the 8th/9th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment (8/9 RAR) in Brisbane, where he served in Alpha company where he just missed out on Timor. In this time, he ended up helping out on a basic sniper course, which landed him in a platoon for prep for MTF 4, leading to a deployment to Afghanistan in 2012. After returning he transitioned out of full-time service and briefly went back to his trade. Following a 12-month break, he attempted to return but was formally discharged due to medical classification. He is now a fully licensed real estate agent in high-performance team based on the Sunshine Coast.

Since his discharge he has built up his organisation called Eighth Mile. Eighth Mile is a training and educational company that focuses on leadership and personal development. Episode 68 and I'm joined by Luke. Luke enlisted in 2010; following his basic training at Kapooka, Luke posted to 2nd Cavalry Regiment in Darwin, undergoing specialised training at the Puckapunyal School of Armour. In 2014, Luke was deployed to Malaysia, where he gained invaluable experience in a multinational environment. After his deployment he transferred to the 1st Armoured Regiment in Adelaide. This new assignment brought further opportunities, leading Luke to deploy to Iraq on TGT- 4. He discharged in 2019. Episode 67 and I'm joined by Brent. Enlisting in the Australian Army in 1987 at the age of 17, he went to Kapooka, completing an extended 18-week recruit training due to an injury. Following this, he spent time at the School of Signals, Norforce in Darwin and 103 Signal Squadron in Townsville. In 1994, he was deployed as part of the South Pacific Peacekeeping Force (SPPKF) to Bougainville PNG. Unfortunately, he was medically discharged at the end of 1998, marking over a decade of committed service. Since his discharge he has struggled with alcohol and hopes his story can help others.

Throughout his 20 year career he moved all across Australia, finally discharging and finishing his career after a posting in Townsville. Following his discharge, he opened an outboard shop in Maroochydore but to no avail. He now contracts for defence repairing marine equipment and is the QLD representative for an amazing veterans charity “Guitars for Veterans Australia".

Episode 64 and I'm joined by Matho. Matho served 13 years in the army but discharged after a mental breakdown in 1989. Following his discharge, he turned down a dark path doing some very questionable things. He changed his ways and became a minister in 1992. In 2023 he was called to Ukraine and has built the infrastructure and partnerships required to build a national rehabilitation system for veterans and their families. He intends to bring those works back to Australia to serve our veterans through an Holistic Wellbeing Vocationally based family support system. It’s called Veterans Training Resettlement Action Cooperative. (V.T.R.A.C). I was lucky enough to catch up with him for a yarn before he heads back to the Ukraine with government officials to show them his work over there.

RAAF WAGGA,HMAS ALBATROSS, HMAS KANIMBLA and RAAF TOWNSVILLE.

He transferred to army in 2011 and voluntary discharged in 2012. Following his military career he moved overseas to continue his fighting career but also ended up down the wrong path seeking the camaraderie that he missed from his service, ultimately leading him to a jail sentence. We talk about support for veterans incarcerated and his life now that he has rejoined society.

He posted to Bandiana for 3 months to learn logistics, before posting to Robertson barracks in Darwin. He served with 5 RAR for 4 years including plenty of field exercises for in the harsh NT weather. He then deployed to Malaysia in 2022 with delta company for jungle warfare training before being medically discharged in December 2023

He was then posted to Defence Force Recruiting 2014-17, deployed to Bahrain in 2020 and returned to HMAS Brisbane 2021/22. He was medically discharged from the ADF in Apr 2022. We talk about life after defence and some incredible therapy he was treated with to help his mental health!

He Served for just under twenty years and was deployed on operational tours in Northern Ireland, Kosovo, Bosnia, Sierra Leone, both Gulf Wars, Rwanda and South Africa. He specialized in Arctic Warfare, Sniper, was a Platoon Weapons Officer as well as Physical Training and Sports Officer and Para and Dive Trained. He also represented the Combined Services at cricket and Squash. Since his discharge he has relocated to Australia and fly's commercial planes, trained as a mental health peer support leader!

Episode 51 and I’m joined by Simon. Growing up in the Gold Coast with a strong sporting background, and a wholesome loving family, he joined the army at age 17 in 2002. Both his older and younger brothers joining defence too. Simon completed 6 weeks at Kapooka and prepared for his first deployment to The Solomon Islands in 2003. He followed that deployment with two trips to East Timor and two trips to Afghanistan on SOTG Rotation. Following his deployments and career he discharged in 2014. Since leaving defence he has focused his time on project management, but not without some struggles with his mental health. Not only loosing his job in the Australian Army, but loosing his identity.

Episode 49 and I'm joined by Darren Hurford. Darren enlisted in the Army in 2013 at 27 years old under the DRS program. After completing basic training and Infantry IET’s he went to the AIT program at Holdsworthy, then on to Commando selection in 2014. After being medically withdrawn from the course he was posted to 6 RAR later that year and struggled with the day to day soldier life in the battalion. In 2015 he attempted the Basic Reconnaissance Course but was unsuccessful in passing. The following year Darren went for Commando selection again but was removed via BOS (Board Of Studies) 3 days before the end. Needing to regroup and refocus, Darren set his sights on SASR min mill selection. Through 2017 he was chosen for the Duke Of Gloucester Cup team representing 6 RAR, with the team being successful in obtaining the Royal Ulster's Trophy (run and shoot portion of the competition). In April of 2018 Darren attended SASR selection but withdrew after day 3. Following his return to the battalion he underwent the process of medical discharge from the Army, ultimately leaving in May 2019. Since then he has started a bootcamp style program working with people who want to change their lives!

Another deployment to PNG and postings to DFR Robina and various other nursing roles, she was medically discharged in Feb 2024.

He deployed to Namibia and Cambodia over his career to serve with UN Peacekeeping forces.
