Can We Future-Proof Public Lands? Working Together & the GORP Act

How do you get everyone from cattle ranchers to cyclists, snowmobilers, hunters, wildlife biologists, indigenous tribes, and politicians from both sides of the aisle to agree on how to best manage, protect, and utilize our public lands? It ain’t easy.

But the GORP Act took on this challenge, and its collaborative approach could serve as a blueprint for the future. So, we sat down with Jon Hare, Advocacy Director for High Country Conservation Advocates, to get the full story. We discuss why they’re trying to use federal legislation to implement local land management policies; the challenges (and rewards) of working closely with so many different public land users with different priorities; and much more.

Jonathan talks about Natural Selection’s first ski comp with Craig ‘Weazy’ Murray, winner of the men’s division. Craig blew minds in AK with his style and massive transfer gaps, and it’s all even more impressive when you consider the ludicrous talent level at the comp, as well as the fact that Craig was dealing with a knee injury that had him questioning whether he’d even be able to compete.

Weazy takes us behind the scenes of Natural Selection; what differentiates it the most from other comps; and we also talk about Craig’s other passions, including riding mountain bikes at an increasingly high level, and the work he and his friends are doing with their organization, GRITT, which is providing pathways for kids to get into the outdoors and action sports, with a focus on snowsports, climbing, and mountain biking.

Mali Noyes' Incredible Feat: Skiing the Chuting Gallery in 47 Days

Mali Noyes just pulled off a mind-blowing feat in the ski world: completing the Chuting Gallery in 47 days. That’s 93 chutes (she actually did more than that) around the Wasatch in 47 days, with over 200,000 feet of vert climbed, while navigating tricky conditions, complex terrain, incredible physical demands, and mental and emotional fatigue. And she pulled it all off in a time that seems almost unfathomable. So how did she do it? And what led her to take it on? Jonathan Ellsworth talks with Mali about all of it, including some of the best advice she received from Greg Hill, Cody Townsend, Janelle Smiley, and Sam Smoothy.

So how are things actually going when it comes to climate change, carbon emissions, stuff like that? Are we making any real progress? And what do climate scientists — you know, the experts that are doing the research and studying the results — what are they finding? These are some of the things we've been wondering about, and we suspect that some of you have, too.

So today, our guest is one of those experts, and she has a lot of insights to share. Dr. Elizabeth Burakowski is on the Research Faculty at the Institute for the Study of Earth, Oceans, and Space at the University of New Hampshire; she is a member of the Protect Our Winters Science Alliance; and she started snowboarding in 1994, and these days, you’ll find her in the backcountry on her splitboard.

Today we’re talking with Atomic skiers Jossi Wells, Tonje Kvivik, and Noah Wallace about a topic that almost never gets discussed publicly, yet it’s an issue that most sponsored outdoor athletes have to deal with: as a professional athlete, it’s your job to go out there and push yourself and try to push the limits of your sport, while also having to take responsibility for the consequence when things go wrong.

It’s been a longstanding issue in the freeski world, across snowboarding, biking, climbing, and other sports, and while we all love watching athletes put themselves on the line, when injuries happen in that pursuit of pushing what’s possible, most of us then can only offer these athletes our best wishes on social media and our hopes that they heal up soon.

But today, I’m happy to announce a new development that we think will set a new standard in the outdoor industry. And with two Natural Selection Duels events taking place during our recent Blister Summit, it was a perfect chance to talk about Natural Selection and the future of comps with the Olympic & X Games gold medalist, Red Gerard; the legendary T. Bird (Tom Monterosso); and the CEO of Natural Selection, Carter Westfall.

Snowboarders are going to love this one; skiers are going to want to pay close attention; and all of us have an opportunity here to think about the past and future of snowsports comps.

Last week, we had one of the most accomplished athletes of all time come to Western Colorado University for our Blister Speaker Series. And it was quite an opportunity to get to pick the brain of Courtney Dauwalter and get her thoughts on life and the limits we tend to place on ourselves; her approach to training and competition; how she goes about setting goals; and more.

Ultimately, while we’ve watched Courtney’s staggering achievements as she crosses finish line after finish line, setting new course records and accomplishing the seemingly impossible along the way, this conversation makes it clear that her achievements are very much mental victories, and there are takeaways in this conversation that each of us would do well to absorb and implement into our own lives.
