Amp'd Interview 40 feat. Sarah Kroger

A worship release caught out attention recently. Sarah Kroger's debut album with Integrity, Bloom, showed up in our inbox last month with a long list of production and co-writer credits that we couldn't ignore including our friends Ross King, PJ Anderson, Audrey Assad, and Josh Blakesley. That was intriguing enough for us to give the album a spin. It certainly didn't disappoint.

We invited Sarah to join us to chat about Bloom, her faith journey, and her go-to self-case regimen. She was an absolute delight, and we have no doubt that you'll love the interview.

Also, since we mentioned Ross King, he just released an excellent single, "Things That I'm Afraid Of". It elegantly and - well - overtly addresses emotional health in the context of the Kingdom and the Gospel. Considering that May is mental health awareness month, we decided to share a quick snippet of it with you.

Amp'd Interview 39 - World Embrace with Reynold and Kathy Mainse

Dan recently had the opportunity to speak with Reynold and Kathy Mainse about their co-founded ministry called World Embrace. World Embrace is a non-profit organization that works with leaders to develop unity within a region. Unity grows an environment of peace and stability, which fuels community development and poverty relief.

Reynold and Kathy Mainse, left their life of television ministry with 100 Huntley Street to focus their attention on cultivating unity within the Body of Christ. In 2007 and 2008, the Mainse's pioneered an event called Heaven's Rehearsal, a gathering in Toronto where the church gathered together to worship Jesus. Many Christ centered denominations attended, 140+ countries were represented. It was a glimpse into what heaven will be like in all its diversity.

When leaders in Uganda saw the diverse group worshiping together in peace and unity, they invited the Mainse's to come to Uganda to help bring unity in the shadow of the LRA insurgency.

Reynold and Kathy have been working full time in Uganda since January 2015. The team, reach and impact has grown ever since.

Two Minute Music Review - "A Million Lights" by Michael W. Smith

Back in August, Michael W. Smith released his new single “A Million Lights” to the world as a sampling of his new full-length album to be released early next year. We at Frequency tend to look out into the blogosphere, the industry, the other podcasts and gauge the response of consumers and industry experts, to get their take on new releases.I’m sad to report, that there has been very little by way of review or response to the song. The reviews (which are all glowing 5 stars) on Amazon are not the type I’m talking about – they are effectively just copies of press releases. So where is the response to the song?I (Dan), thought long and hard about whether to write a review. After all, it seems like the song has widespread acclaim and in Michael’s own words:“I don’t recall being this excited about a single in a long time,” says Smith. “I’m very happy with how ‘A Million Lights’ has turned out and am anxious to get it from my studio out into the world! I believe the message of this song will be inspiring to everyone who hears it.”So with all the grace I can muster and affection I hold for Michael as a fan going back to the early days, I’ll submit a quick, humble and honest review.From a production perspective, I never have a criticism about Michael’s team’s ability to put out well-mastered material. With the bulk of the production being synth and sequencer-based tracks, it’s not overly difficult to do so. Even Michael’s signature voice is expected and spot on to what his fans will expect – albeit always maintaining an element of nasal weakness that is uniquely coupled with a natural vocal buzz.Where things fall off the rails is in originality and lyrical content. The song, if written and released under any other name, would not have reached the critical acclaim or widespread success it seems to have achieved. Let’s be honest. Would it reach CCM radio? Absolutely. Why? Because it feels good, it sounds good and it challenges nothing. Now to be fair, not all Christian music needs to pierce the heart and beat you into the reality of taking up our cross. But there’s not even a hint of Christ in this song. The lyrics blend into easy listening and inspirational like a pale colour on a Pinterest board. I believe consumers deserve better, deserve depth. And after multiple decades of songwriting and success, it’s appropriate for Smith to be a bit bold and take a few risks. Unfortunately, Michael has gone the other way, and I’m afraid he’ll be giving us an entire meal of what this sampler provided. “Smitty” will always be loved and respected on many levels. He’s chosen his friendships and affiliations wisely. I just wish he had someone in the room that was prepared to challenge the “by the numbers” type of song in this release. Someone needs to ask: “What does this song even mean to the average listener?” Give us better Michael. Challenge the listener to reflect on something more than gazing at the stars, lights, dancing and feeling.

You can put wonderful art right in front of our faces - we will even enjoy and appreciate it - and yet we can get so buried in the day-to-day existence that we fail to bring it to you. That was nearly the case with The Beatitudes Project, an album, book, and documentary film from songwriter/guitarist Stu G. It's an ambitious and timely project, well-crafted and striking in its reexamination of the blessings from the Sermon on the Mount. We were taken with it immediately.Thankfully, a good friend of the podcast, Pam Ettien, shared her enthusiasm for the project and encouraged us to reach out to Stu. She even offered to take on the role of researcher if we could schedule an interview. So we did. The result is our latest Amp'd Interview and a glimpse into the heart of the visionary behind The Beatitudes Project.

It’s not that the group had abandoned that sound for their prior album – it was just buried in arrangements.With the marketplace seemingly flooded with other acts jumping in on the roots-driven country folk bandwagon made popular by the Civil Wars and Mumford &Sons, it is easy to be dismissive of yet another entry. But Home represents the elements one hopes for in good music: authenticity and familiarity without coming across as derived. Home will call to mind elements of The Eagles (think “Seven Bridges Road”), Counting Crows, Jackson Browne, and Gaither – all depending on the song.The tone is set immediately with “Intro”, a 41-second mono track that emulates a person shuffling through stations on AM radio. It effectively sets you in the correct timespace for Home. This nimbly transitions into “Move Us On”, a gentle, tightly-arranged worship song featuring discerning touches of steel guitar. The pace picks up with “Still” and “Hem”, the stand-out tracks on the album – representative of the breadth of styles present on Home. Your toes will tap, and you quickly find yourself singing along.Perhaps one of the greatest strengths of Brothers McClurg as evidenced on Home is their adept blending of the southern gospel of their heritage with touches of modern worship. It provides a bridge between generations that draws each to find a greater appreciation for the individual styles.Of course, it’s impossible to ignore the quality of their execution. The harmonies are tight, the songs tastefully arranged, with obvious attention given to the overall flow from beginning to end.In fact, the presentation is almost good enough to overcome a weaker second half. Not surprisingly, on a 14-track LP there are bound to highs and lows. Thankfully, the lows are only considered such in comparison with the strong first half of the album.Home by Brothers McClurg is a fine LP of folk-driven worship music – probably one of the best of 2015. If there is justice in the world (and there seldom is in music), it will garner the attention and accolades it deserves. For now, allow us to encourage you to download a copy of your own. If you’re the skeptical kind, at least start out with downloads of “Hem” and “Still”. There’s little doubt you’ll be hooked from that point.

In the middle of the December, 2014, an email arrived in the Frequency inbox from a young singer/songwriter by the name of Skylar Kaylyn. Before we ever listened to music from her sophomore release, In My Head, she had our interest. Why? Because this precocious 18-year-old is from Wheatland, Wyoming, a small town (pop. 3,652) in the southeastern corner of the state. And it just so happens that Joe is a graduate of Lovell High School in Lovell, Wyoming. No, the towns aren’t really near each other, but Wyoming is Wyoming, and Joe tends to get excited about these things.As it so happens, Skylar is talented and her album is quite good. After all, Richie was our first guest on the podcast. Yet that doesn’t stop us from feeling a sense of hopeful anxiety when queuing up new release. Can More Than Anthems live up to expectations and continue to demonstrate the consistent growth and maturity of performance and songwriting they’ve shown throughout their career? We were not disappointed…Once again an independent artist, More Than Anthems was funded via a successful 2013 Kickstarter campaign and recorded live in Colorado Springs. Oftentimes the risk of recording live worship is the potential for the energy and the atmosphere of the evening not translating well to the end product. Fortunately, More Than Anthems manages – for the most part – to deliver a good flow of songs and the right amount of crowd response in the mix to keep things moving.Vocally, it is hard to beat the wonderful counterpoint of Richie’s growl and the clarity of Dana’s alto. The blend is remarkable and their interplay contains all of the chemistry that should be there with a husband-wife duo. It gives them a flexibility in performance that allows them to move seamlessly from gentle ballad to floor-stomping rocker.There is demonstrable growth in Richie’s songwriting. His co-writes can be found on many of the major releases over the last year – not the least of which would be his contribution to “We Believe”, whose recording by the Newboys was the most successful single in Christian music for 2013. But listen on to songs like “Like No One Could” and “Wholly Yours”. You’ll hear songs that speak to hope, longing, and vulnerability. One gets the sense that you’ve walking through the valley with Fike, coming out the other side, and singing together about that journey.Lest this review come across as unadulterated adulation rather than an actual critical appraisal of the work, there are some points that could be improved upon. First of all, this is a worship album. If you are not a fan of the genre, the impact of the album is greatly diminished. And, like virtually any other worship release, it can fall victim to a sameness or formulaic quality when consumed in a single sitting. Certain songs that are quite good in isolation get lost in the mix and tend to blend together within the flow of the album – notably a few of the ballads.At the end of the day, More Than Anthems is a Fike album, which means there is a good balance between congregational accessibility and solid songwriting. Catchy melodies, lyrics that generally avoid overused conventions. Will it be amongst the best in the worship genre this year? There’s a good chance. Will the songs end up on your worship leaders songlist? They probably already are.

During our trip to Christian Musician Summit 2014, we conducted nearly 40 Lightning Interviews that included attendees, artists, and exhibitors. As one can attest from their April 24 take over of 21 digital billboards in NYC’s Times Square, no one is going to accuse Hillsong Worship (nee Hillsong Live) of being understated or subtle – well, at least in terms of promotion. Their latest collection, No Other Name, released this week, coincides with the Hillsong Church celebrating 30 years of ministry. After such a bold statement, the question is whether Hillsong Worship can deliver the goods with this 11-song offering. We set loose contributor Jessica Collins to find out and research the reviews. Critics were effectively universal in praising the release, yet they were not effusive in their response. Above all, and relevant to her triumph in writing Finding Spiritual Whitespace: Awakening Your Soul to Rest, is Gray’s unique ability to connect women with their own stories in a powerful and healing way.Throughout the book, Gray’s own painful story unfolds. She writes unﬂinchingly about her childhood marred by parental emotional abuse and divorce, and how she recognized the need as an adult to seek help for Post-Traumatic Stress Syndrome. The core of this powerful book is the manner in which she emerged from her PTSD to face her past and live in the present.The resulting story could stand alone as a parable of forgiveness. But Gray goes much further to give her readers the real and transformative gift of a structured and meditative approach to healing past emotional wounds. The process she has created has the power to help those being healed to emerge as what Henri Nouwen called a “wounded healer” – those who recognize and heal their own wounds so that they are able to help others heal.The image behind the book is that of “white space,” that area around a work of art that frames it so we can clearly see what the artist intended. White space helps the viewer focus on the art being presented without being distracted by surrounding clutter. By analogy, Gray uses the artistic device of white space to help her readers clear away the clutter of their own past to see the beauty intended by their creator. The point behind all of this is that the reader is herself a work of art, worthy of white space, worthy to be seen clearly in her full beauty. This is powerful stuff in a world where women are often implicitly if not directly told to suffer silently and to project a false and commercial beauty.One small criticism of the book is that, ironically, it seems at ﬁrst a bit cluttered. There are several major sections in each chapter, including Gray’s unfolding childhood story, highlights from her therapy to heal her PTSD, and some exercises for the reader to work though her own healing; however, this structure is not at ﬁrst completely clear. Stick with it, though, and the ﬂow of the book will begin to make sense. Once it does, you will be rewarded.If you are willing to devote time and honest energy to your own “white space,” to let your God-given beauty emerge, you will grow from the stories and exercises in this book. Although this book is intended for women, there are many applications for men as well. Anyone with a painful past in search of healing will beneﬁt from Finding Spiritual Whitespace.

Book Review - One Way Love by Tullian Tchividjian

I (Dan) recently had the opportunity to read Tullian Tchividjian’s latest book One Way Love – Inexhaustible Grace for an Exhausted World. This book was highly anticipated – not only because of his relationship to Billy Graham (Tullian is his grandson), but also the subject matter on “Grace”, which is the very topic of The Gospel Coalition – Atlantic Canada‘s conference this coming August 5-7, 2014 in Charlottetown PEI.I will say it’s easy to be cynical of an author that has a total of 28 endorsements at the front of the book from all walks of life. It seems that there is a lot of convincing to do at the front end to get you to read the book, but all-in-all, the book is well worth the read and will give you an immense sense of hope in your position and relationship with Christ and literally rock your world if you come from a legalistic background.This book is full of quote-worthy statements and definitely will not leave you questioning what Tullian’s point is. This having been said, it is a tad repetitive and you may find Tullian’s perspective on Grace to be radical – even uncomfortable – grace. I submit, though, that you can’t read the Old and New Testament without coming to the realization that God’s grace is indeed radical; Jesus’ death, burial, and resurrection miraculous; and His call to follow Him uncomfortable.

We’ve been pretty excited about the release of Ellie Holcomb’s debut LP, As Sure as the Sun, from the moment we learned of it last fall. Ellie first came to our attention when Episode 12 guest Emily Freeman named Ellie’s EP With You Now as one of her favorite releases of 2013. Relenting to her husband Drew’s (of Drew Holcomb and the Neighbors) constant encouragement to record her own music, Ellie initiated what would become a record-setting Kickstarter campaign in mid-November. In just three days, the $40,000 goal was met. It then went on to earn over $100,000 in pledges in just a few weeks time.So, with all of the expectations and enthusiasm, does As Sure As the Sun hit the mark? Or will we be let down? To be honest, we like Ellie too much to be objective on this one, so we pulled together reviews from across the Net. The consensus: From all reports, Holcomb has knocked it out of the park with her debut. Straightforward lyrically, scripturally founded, and with her distinctively sincere and vulnerable vocal delivery, As Sure As the Sun sets the bar pretty high for new releases in 2014. Last fall, City Harbor dropped their first single, an über-catchy inspirational pop number called “Come However You Are” from the EP of the same name. It didn’t take long for mainstream Christian radio to take notice and start asking for more. The Nashville duo responded on February 4th with their self-titled debut, City Harbor. If you’re on the fence about springing for the album, let us help you: we read every review we could find and have shared those that provide a good perspective. City-Harbor The consensus: This is – by all accounts – good work from City Harbor. The album is well-produced and a pleasant listen. It’s hard to fault the positive message and solid vocals from Molly Reed and Robby Earle. In 2006, Hillsong United released United We Stand – a game-changing worship album that established Hillsong as a force unafraid to diversify, experiment, and otherwise challenge our expectations. 2013 seems to be the year they reinforce that image. Earlier this year, Hillsong United shook things up with the progressive and innovative arrangements of Zion.Now Hillsong Young & Free step into the action with their debut, We Are Young & Free (Live). The latest musical iteration from Hillsong Church have produced one of the more distinct sounds to come out of this local church in recent years. We Are Young & Free could be a game changer.We Are Young & Free is most definitely an anthem album. Party songs like “Alive” “Wake” and “In Sync” perfectly capture the current pop culture scene and offer a God glorifying alternative that this current youth generation has been waiting for.Musically this album is a bullseye: well-produced, thoughtful musicianship, and tasteful additions of EDM (electronic dance music) elements. Worship bands like the David Crowder Band and more recently, the Worship Central movement, have done a great job at incorporating electronic sounds and elements into their music, but never really knocking it out of the park and appealing more to a young adult demographic than to teenagers.Lyrically, all the basics of Christian theology are there; however, true to the Hillsong brand, an emphasis on God’s love and His grace is laced on every track of this album. It would be great if they departed more from the out-of-the-box worship lexicon, but the target audience isn’t likely to complain. And honestly, there could be worse things than giving your youth group something fresh, energetic, relevant.All in all, this is a stand-out disc that nails it for their target youth audience. We Are Young & Free will be a welcome addition to any iPod, pre-youth group music rotation or workout mix.

Our guest from Episode 5, Travis Thrasher, has had a busy year. At the time we spoke to him this past spring, he was promoting the release of his novelization of Home Run – just a few months after publishing the fourth and final book in the Solitary Tales series, Hurt: A Novel. This summer, he published two more books, both collaborations: Are You Gonna Kiss Me or Not? with country artists Thompson Square, and the self-published Never Let Go with Mac & Mary Owen. Finally, in October, he releases his fifth book of 2013, Time For Me to Come Home, another collaboration, this time with Dorothy Shackleford. Dorothy is perhaps best known as the mother of 2013 CMA Entertainer of the Year, Blake Shelton.Time For Me To Come Home Now, Travis is one of our favorite folks, but even we didn’t feel like we could keep up with everything he has been up to.
