If you have heard my interview with her, you can tell how far she has come as an artist and popularity. 2019 is her breakout year with the #1 single, Truth Hurts on billboard for weeks. Ruben Young talks Dreamstate, trusting yourself and how to remove yourself from your art

Our special guest goes by the name of Ruben Young, originally from Calgary, Alberta, and now resides in Toronto. Since Ruben's debut in 2017, he has released six singles and earned millions of streams, independently, on his own label, Young and Lucky. BOSS! *Rick Ross voice*. Ruben's crossover sound has given him the opportunity to share the stage with a diverse resume of artists from The Chainsmokers, Akon, Classified, Langston Francis and the Phony Ppl.

Ruben's debut EP Dreamstate is an introduction to his world, and the time he spent travelling across North America writing and collaborating with other artists/producers. His writing experience includes sessions with T-Minus (Drake, Justin Bieber), Chin Injeti (Eminem, P!NK), Kuya Productions (Alessia Cara, JRDN), Classified, Slakah The Beatchild, and the list goes on.

"This EP is a step into the world of the blurry middle ground that stands between our dreams and the realities we crave." Ruben Young.

Ruben has become best known for his single "Rachel Green" (over one million streams), an ode to 90's dream girl played by Jennifer Aniston on 'FRIENDS,' which featured American rapper Hodgy Beats from Odd Future.

I thoroughly enjoyed our conversation, and I think you will too. We talked about the importance of travel and how time alone in different environments changes you. How in order to trust someone (in the context of your creative career) you have to trust yourself first. We talk about oversaturation in media and the distractions that can take us away from music listening experience and so much more.

I'd like want to thank D.O. aka Duane Gibson and his team for another successful Northern Power Summit. From the educational panels and networking opportunities, there was a lot of informational gems, jewels, MAJOR KEYS (DJ Khaled voice). I moderated the Next Level panel featuring speakers Chris “Deep” Henderson and David “Click” Cox.

Seemingly since the beginning of time, the hit single has been elusive, yet a huge source of pride for artists. As the industry has moved from radio spins to YouTube views to Instagram “likes”, what makes a hit these days? This panel will discuss how to determine success and how artists can find it in today’s music economy.

Panellists biography

Christopher “Deep” Henderson is a multi-platinum, Grammy Award-winning songwriter and music producer whose hits include Jamie Foxx & T-Pain’s “Blame It” along with a host of others from artists like 50cent with G-Unit, Trey Songz, Mario, Dru Hill, Jacob Latimore and others. In a career now spanning over 18 years, this 3 time ASCAP Award recipient was listed among Billboard Magazine’s Top 5 Hot Hip-hop/R&B Producers of Year in both the 2000 and the 2010 year-end issues.

Currently, Christopher has founded and is developing a multimedia platform he calls SongBuildersTV. It is designed to connect and empower the creative community, providing professional insights and front row seat views to the process as songs are built from the inspiration phase to the rough mix. He also takes the show on the road as he hosts song building master classes at various music conferences around the world and through partnerships with various non-profit and community serving charities.

Henderson continues to work on both established and developing upcoming music projects.

David “Click” Cox started his career as a member of the MMVA winning and JUNO nominated group, The Maximum Definitive. Created reputation for his promotional and marketing efforts working closely with concert promotions company REMG. Soon after, he started his career working with BMG Music Canada and then worked at Universal Music Canada as A&R. During his time with Universal, David founded the Stylus Awards to celebrate the Canadian urban music talents and recognition of DJs. After 8 years with Universal, David created his own entertainment company, CLK Creative Works. Today, CLK is responsible for managing an eclectic roster of highly skilled and experienced artists including Ruben Young, SATE, King Reign, and DJ Agile. Along with management, David teaches music business at Metalworks and The Remix Project.

I hope you enjoyed our previous panel from A3C in ATL. Here is another exclusive from the Northern Power Summit, which is a one-day conference with a showcase component. Their primary objective is to provide education and tools, as well as access to individuals to help artists and industry professionals develop their careers internationally.

The Future of Sharing and Discovery

I moderated a panel titled ”The Future of Sharing & Discovery” at A3C in Atlanta. My panelists were Nikhil Shah, the cofounder of mixcloud. Nicole Johnson from head of Urban Marketing at Pandora, Daniel Sander is the Feature.fm which is platform that uses technology to build marketing, and analytics products for the music industry. Nick Merich is the Co-Founder of Songlink, a platform-agnostic music sharing app.

The internet and streaming services have irreversibly changed the music industry. Artists are able to access more consumer with fewer barriers than ever before. Longstanding, traditional marketing and artist discovery methods are a thing of the past. Technology is disrupting the artist discovery process and turning sharing into a science. It is essential for anyone in the music business to understand the new landscape of music sharing and artist discovery.

Panelists

1) Nikhil Shah - Nikhil Shah is Cofounder of Mixcloud, a streaming radio service that connects listeners to the world’s leading DJs, radio presenters and Podcasters. The service boasts over 1.3 million creators globally across a vast spectrum of genres and sounds.

2) Nicole Johnson - This Jersey girl’s love of music started at West Virginia University’s college radio station U92. Nicole was quickly put on-air and created a late night show, The Urban Dinner, playing hip hop and R&B hits that continues at the university today. After graduating from West Virginia University, Nicole started her career answering phones at WKTU103.5 inNYC(an iHeartStation), taking on multiple responsibilities at the station. She was quickly promoted to mid-day producer setting up interviews with top talent and developing show ideas. Nicole was then offered a staff position and transitioned to the programming department.

3) Daniel Sander - Dan manages is the Chief Commercial Officer at Feature.fm and has been with the company since launch, working closely with demand side partners. He has personally worked with over 100 independent artists and labels specializing in digital music marketing, PR and artist development. Dan works closely with Feature.fm's technology to build marketing, advertising and analytics products for the music industry. Prior to Feature.fm, Dan managed Large Corporate Multi-National Clients at JP Morgan.

4) Nick Merich - Nick Merich is the Co-Founder of Songlink, a platform-agnostic music sharing app. With Songlink, you can share music better and more efficiently without worrying about which music streaming platform your friends, family or fans use. Songlink’s services find each song and album on every streaming platform, so you can share one link and allow everyone to listen.

Haviah Mighty: I am the underdog experience

She was named in the top 15 Toronto Rappers you should know in 2019. I met Haviah mighty several years ago in London while she attended Fanshawe College. I still remember her guest appearance on our radio show in 2012, there was a caller who was listening to her performance and sat in his car parked in his driveway for a half an hour because he was blown away.

Haviah Mighty was raised in a musical household in Brampton, Ontario, Mighty started singing at the age of 4, rapping at 11, and producing at 15. She is well-known for being one of the three MCs who make up The Sorority. In 2018, Mighty’s track “Vámonos” appeared on HBO’s hit series, Insecure.

If you haven’t seen Haviah live show, she opened up for Maestro Fresh Wes in London for the Juno’s, and Maestro legitimately said he was nervous that she made him step his game up. It was a pleasure catching up with Haviah Mighty to talk about her career, the importance of having the time to find out who she is an artist.

"The art represents your brand and who you are. A real artist makes the audience think.

It goes way deeper than just what you see now, A real artist doesn’t tell their audience what to think. They let their audience think for themselves. Once I grasped that concept, it was really easy. I know what I like, I know what I don’t. I know how I want to be seen and how to interact and it worked out for me."

Tim North on "Fuck Luck", rebranding and songwriting placements

My special guest on this weeks edition of The Come Up Show podcast is Tim North. Recently, while I was listening to Spotify, it automatically played this song called “Fuck Luck”. I pulled up my phone and saw the artist name, Tim North which I didn’t recognize. After reading the artist bio on Spotify, I found out he was from Toronto which further piqued my interest. I went down the rabbit hole and found his Instagram and realized who it was, Tim! We go way back and I knew him by his previous rapper name Fundament. I saw he had a couple of songwriting placements and he was back and forth between L.A., so we had to catch up. We talked about his song “Fuck Luck”, which has over 2 million streams on Spotify alone, how he was ended up working with notable producers, his rebranding and so much more.

Our Mac Miller interview when he was only 18 years old

As you may know Mac Miller died on September 7th, 2018. It was and still is a shock to his fans and the hip-hop community at large. I couldn’t believe it when I heard the news and thought someone was playing a joke on me. If you didn’t know The Come Up Show has interviewed Mac Miller three separate times now and i’m going to share with you our first ever interview with him when he was only 18 years old. This was when the Smokers Club Tour came into town in 2010 at the Opera House in Toronto. Maestro Fresh Wes: Toronto was a true underdog with an inferiority complex

He’s the godfather of Canadian Hip-Hop; he’s an artist, author, motivational speaker, and actor. I’m humbled to have Maestro Fresh Wes on The Come Up Show Podcast. In our conversation, we spoke about how Toronto had a hard time accepting success, how the city grew up in an era of being a true underdog and the inferiority complex we had to New York and so much more.

Maestro is going to be speaking more about his journey in detail Sunday, September 9th at the McMichael Canadian Art Collection for Acoustic Conversations. He’ll be speaking about his early years in Toronto's hip-hop scene, his longevity in the industry, and his burgeoning acting career. Maestro will also discuss his artistic journey as a Canadian emcee in New York as he worked on his 1994 release Naaah Dis Kid Can't be from Canada?!! The conversation will be followed by a live performance.

K. Forest on overthinking, working with Travis Scott, and taking risks

Kris the $pirit: The youth don't f** with nothing

I was introduced to his music initially through the group The Posterz, I clearly remember watching the video for The Bass Song and I was hooked. When I got the opportunity to do music programming for Manifesto Festival, I booked The Posterz to perform at Yonge and Dundas Square in 2015.

Kris was back in Toronto during NXNE and he’s got a new project out titled “Spirit Mode Vol.1” and from our conversation, this is just the beginning of a lot more music to come. We talked about why the youth don’t mess with anything, why it’s important to live life, get outside and experience things to make good art and so much more.

My special guest this week is Judi Lopez, the Founder of KeepRockinYou, an artist-based collective that seeks to inspire and empower young women. Judi is also the Toronto representative for the international Hip Hop dance theatre festival, Breakin’ Convention happening this weekend June 1 and 2nd at the Sony Centre for Performing Arts. Judi talks about how there weren’t many black women breaking when she started, and how hip-hop dance is evolving.

City Fidelia is a socially conscious rapper that’s always speaking on hardships everyone can relate to. Northern Stars: Exploring the alternative to Toronto's sound

What’s the first thing you think of when you hear “Toronto sound”? I’m willing to bet Drake or The Weeknd instinctively come to mind. What many don't know is that Toronto's music scene is complex and varies on a spectrum that goes beyond the dark, moody sound that often characterizes the city. Take for instance singer-songwriter and producer a l l i e, her style in music goes beyond the typical dark-moody sound that Toronto is known for. Her sound involves a lot of groove and funk undertones, something she calls “a mash-up of analog and digital”. a l l i e isn’t the only star rising in Toronto’s alternative scene, artists like M.I. Blue, Clairmont the Second, and 2nd Son are also changing what is known as “Toronto sound.” In this episode of The Come Up Show we present our very first audio documentary presented by Soundcloud. I submitted a request to CMW for an interview with Skepta and I was told he wasn’t doing any press. I found out Skepta was doing a meet and greet at Play De Record and I decided to go in hopes of interviewing him. I asked around four people in Skepta's team and everyone gave me the same answer that he wasn't doing any press. A few hours later, when Skepta finished signing albums for his fans, I personally asked if I could interview him for five minutes and he agreed!
