At 19 years young Kati Wolfgangs Aunt passed away at the age of 40 from breast cancer. It was also at this time that Kati found out that she has the same BRCA1 genetic mutation that her aunt had putting Kati at an 80% or greater chance of developing breast cancer too. After 10 years of cancer screenings every 6 months Kati made the decision to have a double mastectomy to eliminate her risk of breast cancer and should have been just one surgery. Michael tried to find employment and after numerous unsuccessful attempts he put his future in his own hands and took the steps necessary to open his own coffee shop with the theme being inclusion. I got to sit down with Marisa Boidi and her 2.5 year old daughter Natalia who was diagnosed with SMA at 5 weeks old. SMA is Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is a disease that robs people of physical strength by affecting the motor nerve cells in the spinal cord, taking away the ability to walk, eat, or breathe. It is the number one genetic cause of death for infants.

SMA is caused by a mutation in the survival motor neuron gene 1 (SMN1). In a healthy person, this gene produces a protein that is critical to the function of the nerves that control our muscles. Without it, those nerve cells cannot properly function and eventually die, leading to debilitating and sometimes fatal muscle weakness.

SMA affects approximately 1 in 11,000 births, and about 1 in every 50 Americans is a genetic carrier. SMA can affect any race or gender.

There are four primary types of SMA—1, 2, 3, and 4—based on the age that symptoms begin, and highest physical milestone achieved.

Individuals with SMA have difficulty performing the basic functions of life, like breathing and swallowing. However, SMA does not affect a person’s ability to think, learn, and build relationships with others.

Colonel Athens recently left the federal government, having served for the past decade as

the Director of the U.S. Naval Academy’s Vice Admiral James B. Stockdale Center for

Ethical Leadership and previously, as the Naval Academy’s first Distinguished Military

Professor of Leadership.

Colonel Athens is a retired Marine Corps officer with command and staff assignments in

all four Marine Aircraft Wings and an instructor tour with Marine Aviation Weapons and

Tactics Squadron One (the Marine Corps’ equivalent to the Navy’s Top Gun school). He

also served as a White House Fellow under President Ronald Reagan and the Special

Assistant to the NASA Administrator following the Space Shuttle Challenger accident.

Colonel Athens currently speaks around the country about leading with integrity and

works alongside leaders to help them fulfill their personal and professional calling.

He is married to the former Mistina Root of Williamsburg, Virginia and they have ten

children.
