Twelve-year-old Sofiya has a close relationship with her father who is manager of a dolphinarium. Her father is dealing with his own angst because his Russian wife has abandoned the family. Sofiya also lives with her Baba, a scientist who inspires her future career choices. Sofia loves her life in Crimea, and when the Russian government under Vladimir Putin annexes Crimea from Ukraine, Sofia is devastated.

As the annexation evolves, Sofia must deal with changes to the political situation in Crimea, as well as fearing that the new Russian leaders will shut down the dolphinarium. 

The strength of this novel is its examination of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine during the annexation of Crimea in 2014. 

Despite this conflict, author Chrystyna Lucyk-Berger tells a story of cooperation and friendship between young people who rise above political differences to work for a common cause.

The first Home of Hope in Lviv was created to support girls who have nowhere to go once they age out of orphanages or face circumstances that leave them without secure housing.

The conversation brings together Catherine Fox and Nadiia Jarosz of the Lubov SSMI Foundation in Winnipeg, along with Sophia, a current resident of the home, to illustrate how this ministry provides stability, safety, and community for vulnerable young women.

Stephen Harper’s response to the Ukrainian Crisis of 2014 was robust, and his rebuke of Russian aggression was powerful. He famously told Putin to "Get out of Ukraine" when other world leaders at the time turned a blind eye.

Harper argued that Putin’s actions in Ukraine would only embolden him in the future. 

Unfortunately, this turned out to be true when Putin invaded Ukraine in 2022.

Born and raised in Canada into a Ukrainian family from Kyiv, Max describes returning to a country at war, seeing his family home destroyed by russian missiles, travelling alone into active combat zones, surviving nearby strikes, and filming evacuations and frontline life with Ukrainian soldiers.

Ukrainian newcomer Olena Lavrishcheva speaks with Pawlina about her family’s extraordinary journey from Kyiv to Nanaimo, their experience of the full‑scale invasion, and the community work now emerging on Vancouver Island.

Olena recounts how she, her husband, and two of their daughters were unexpectedly outside Ukraine—on a cruise in Dubai—when Russia launched its brutal assault. Their four younger children and son‑in‑law were still in Kyiv. What followed was a frantic, days‑long effort to reunite the family at the Romanian border, followed by months of displacement in Turkey and Germany before finally settling in Nanaimo. Today, eleven family members are here.

Before the war, Olena ran a private school in Kyiv and worked with youth through a missions foundation, including educational programs in Turkey. In Nanaimo, she is a teaching assistant at Nanaimo Christian School, while her adult daughters—also trained educators—have secured teaching positions. Alongside work and family responsibilities, Olena has helped launch a new community organization: the Canadian Alliance of Ukrainian Workers.

She explains that the Alliance was created to unite Ukrainians and Canadians who want to support humanitarian needs in Ukraine and help newcomers integrate and contribute locally. The group brings together people with Ukrainian roots and local supporters who want to take meaningful, practical steps—small but impactful—to assist those affected by the war.

Olena also describes the organization’s early initiatives, including a community cultural event held in February 2025 to mark the third year of the full‑scale invasion. The gathering featured music, reflections on Ukraine before and during the war, cultural presentations, video segments, and Ukrainian food. While the event has passed, the goals behind it remain central: to remember, to inform, to celebrate Ukrainian culture, and to strengthen community connections.

This week’s Knyzka Corner looks at A Harvest Truce, Serhiy Zhadan’s tragicomic portrayal of everyday life in Eastern Ukraine during the ongoing conflict. Through the story of two brothers trying to bury their mother amid shelling, collapsed infrastructure, and strained community bonds, the play reveals both the harshness of daily survival and the quiet resilience that sustains ordinary Ukrainians living under Russian aggression since 2014.

Reviewer Myra Junyk highlights the mix of bleakness and dark humour that runs through the work, as well as its echoes of Beckett in the way characters navigate an uncertain, often absurd reality. She also notes the strong sense of community that persists despite fear, suspicion, and the constant threat of violence.

In January 2016, international correspondent Sergei Loiko joined Nash Holos for a conversation shaped by his rare firsthand experience inside the Donetsk airport during the height of the fighting. Loiko was the only foreign journalist to spend several days embedded with the Ukrainian defenders known as the Cyborgs — access that later informed his novel Aeroport, published in Ukrainian and Russian in 2016.

This interview was recorded the day after his Ottawa presentation marking the release of those original editions. At the time, no English version existed; the translation would not appear until 2018, under the title Airport.

Re‑released now to provide historical context on the early phase of Russia’s war against Ukraine, the discussion offers a clear, unfiltered snapshot of how the battle was understood at the time — before the full‑scale invasion and before Loiko’s novel reached an international readership. His reflections on the soldiers, the siege, and the human cost of the conflict remain strikingly relevant.

Oleg shared with me some startling personal recollections of life in Ukraine—and, by extension, anywhere in the former USSR—before the collapse of communism in Europe, during and after the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, and the years following until he left Ukraine.

He also reflected on the circumstances, events and government policies that led to the Holodomor (the famine-genocide in Ukraine in 1932 and 1933) … and why in his view the western world is on the brink of repeating history from the darkest days of communism in eastern Europe.

It seemed a bit far-fetched 10 years ago… but today, maybe not so much.

That interview was recorded via Skype in days before today’s advanced recording devices and internet technology were readily available and affordable for independent broadcasters in home studios. So, apologies for the sound quality. I hope the content of this interview makes up for it. Ten years later, it is every bit as timely...if not more so.
