If you have painful period cramps, you’re in luck. There’s a new cannabis-infused “tampon” on the market, and according to customer reviews, it’s “magical.” It’s not exactly a tampon, just a cocoa-butter-based, tampon-shaped suppository, infused with THC and CBD oil.

The product is called “Relief” made by a company called Foria selling at around $10 a suppository. One woman with endometriosis said it “changed her life,” in a review on Foria’s website. Another called it “better than Midol.”

According to the reviews, one suppository can provide 24 hours of relief. Unfortunately not all women can access the little “lifesavers.” So far, only dispensaries in California and Colorado carry them. If you don’t live in those states, you can order the CBD-only version online.

Both products are made with sun-grown cannabis cultivated to organic standards and independently-tested as free of pesticides, heavy metals, microbes and other toxins.

TIME FOR NEW HEMP TIMES TO REGULATE: THE FDA and the future of cannabis

Former FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb has said if the FDA is unable to come up with regulations quickly, it would be up to Congress to create a framework. Friday’s hearing isn’t expected to yield immediate results and the FDA is set to create a working group to continue the effort, but speakers will include cannabis industry pioneers, entrepreneurs, politicians, scientists and doctors, many of whom have played a role in legalizing cannabis and hemp.

The FDA has warned companies that because it views CBD as a drug, it cannot be added to food or beverages or marketed as a dietary supplement in interstate commerce. But it has also said that given the strong public interest in CBD as a wellness aid, it will seek to help provide pathways to regulatory approval.

The Need for Federal Regulation of Marijuana Marketing

A national for-profit marijuana industry is expanding substantially in the United States. Thirty-three states have legalized medical marijuana, 10 of which (where 1 in 4 individuals reside) have also legalized recreational marijuana. Sales of marijuana are projected to increase from $8.5 billion to $75 billion by 2030, rivaling current tobacco sales ($125 billion). The initial marijuana marketplace was limited to a few states, but emerging brands have developed sophisticated national marketing campaigns that could potentially have an effect across state lines. This marketplace expansion, along with questionable marketing practices, introduces a need for federal action.

For some physicians and public health experts, the marketing strategies used by MedMen may harken back to an era when physicians endorsed their favorite tobacco products and youth wore tobacco-branded clothing in schools. The time for a response is now, for delayed reaction will yield lingering exposure to potentially hazardous marketing claims. A national evidence-based regulatory regime for marijuana marketing must become a public health priority.

Despite the rapid expansion of the market, some consumers will face accessibility issues due to location and demographics. The exclusion of POC and minorities from the profits of the Cannabis industry still happens, despite the history of oppression that Prohibition has created.

Cannabidiol (CBD) reduced cue-induced craving and anxiety in individuals with a history of heroin abuse, suggesting a potential role for it in helping to break the cycle of addiction, according to research conducted at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and published May 21 in the American Journal of Psychiatry. The study also revealed that CBD tended to reduce physiological measures of stress reactivity, such as increased heart rate and cortisol levels, that are induced by drug cues.

"Our findings indicate that CBD holds significant promise for treating individuals with heroin use disorder," says Dr. Hurd. "A successful non-opioid medication would add significantly to the existing addiction medication toolbox to help reduce the growing death toll, enormous health care costs, and treatment limitations imposed by stringent government regulations amid this persistent opioid epidemic."

Researchers in NYC (Shout to Mount Sinai) teamed up with a team in Spain. Dr. Yasmin Hurd is one of the authors of the paper, she is a colleague of mine. I have hosted panels that she has been on. She’s one of the enlightened drug abuse researchers. And someone I am hoping to work with on some of the institutes work. The work was published in the journal of neuroscience this week.

TAKE HOME MESSAGE: The study in rats, translated into its human potential could mean that after abstaining from opioid use for a time, CBD could prevent relapse. But may have no effect on first wave of opioid addiction, CBD may not prevent the development of addiction but may help break the cycle or relapse after abstinence.

Oral doses of delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) 20 mg, combined with placebo or with 40 mg doses of cannabinol (CBN) and cannabidiol (CBD), were given to volunteers. The combination of THC with CBN produced no detectable changes in the quality, intensity, or duration of the effects of THC alone. The THC-CBD combination tended to delay onset and prolong effects of THC, while making them somewhat more intense. Even this interactive effect was slight, providing no reason to abandon the current practice of basing doses of marihuana for clinical studies solely on THC content. At the very most, the presence of comparatively large amounts of CBD in combination with THC may have increased slightly its clinical effects. CBD has been reported to be a potent inhibitor of hydroxylating enzymes. Such an action could delay formation of the Il-hydroxymetabolite, one which is known to be somewhat more potent than the parent substance. This action might also delay formation of dihydroxymetabolites, which are generally assumed to be inactive. Thus, the clinically observed slower onset and longer duration of the THC-CBD combination might possibly be explained by this mechanism.

“You stole my schedule 1 drug recipe!” THC and CBD Extract Patent May Be Enforced, Dispute Headed for Jury Trial

Pure Hemp previously filed a motion for partial summary judgment back in November, which if granted, would have ruled some of UCANN’s patent claims invalid. The premise of Pure Hemp’s motion was that UCANN’s claims aren’t actually patentable and such “substantially pure liquid CBD products are ubiquitous” in the marketplace. 

Plaintiff United Cannabis Corporation (“UCANN”) owns the “911 Patent,” which generally covers liquid cannabinol formulations of a purified CBD and/or THC greater than 95%. Last July, UCANN sued defendant Pure Hemp Collective, Inc. (“Pure Hemp”), alleging that Pure Hemp had infringed on the 911 Patent. UCANN is hoping to secure a permanent injunction against Pure Hemp from infringing on its patent, as well as damages and attorneys’ fees. Pure Hemp’s motion is denied, the case will proceed as normal toward a jury trial. It’s likely that there will be more motion practice, and we’ll keep posting regular updates on this case as we receive them.

Given popular stereotypes that cannabis use is associated with a lack of motivation and, indeed, extreme sedentary behavior (c.f., “couch lock”), increased cannabis use could worsen the sedentary lifestyle epidemic that the US is currently facing. On the other hand, cannabis use is banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency because of its potential to improve sports performance, and numerous reports in the popular press suggest that endurance athletes utilize cannabis in their training. Such conflicting ideas about the relationship between cannabis use and physical activity necessitate further investigation into how cannabis use may affect factors associated with regular physical activity participation.

MS patients taking cannabis were able to reduce intake of opioids and benzodiazepines

According to a retrospective chart review of 77 patients diagnosed with multiple sclerosis treatment with cannabis allowed one third to reduce the intake of other medications, including opioids. Scientists of Dent Neurologic Institute Amherst in New York, USA, published their study results In the Journal Neurology.

Subjective improvement endorsed by patients was extensive, with alleviation of pain (71%), spasticity (43%), and sleep (42%). In addition, 34% of patients were able to decrease or discontinue other medications including opioids, stimulants, and benzodiazepines. A low rate of discontinuation (14%) was observed, most frequently due to cost (36%) and lack of efficacy (36%).

The science behind patents: Who Owns Cannabis Genetics?

Summary/high notes:

It wasn’t until 1981 that the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) began to issue patents for natural plan. General Electric (GE), developed bacteria that was capable of breaking down crude oil, and so GE and Chakrabarty sought a patent. Today, the USPTO’s guidelines on patenting living things are even broader, allowing anyone who “invents or discovers and asexually reproduces any distinct and new variety of plant … may obtain a patent therefor.” Patents are expensive, but valuable. It works like this: First, an inventor files an application, in which they must provide details on four sets of criteria:

1. Whether or not the invention can be patented under law

2. Proof that the invention is truly new

3. The invention is useful

4. The invention is non-obvious

Cannabis is in danger of going the way the rest of agriculture has gone: toward monoculture, centralization, and restrictive patenting. The Open Cannabis Project (OCP) was established by industry leaders to resist these forces and to protect genetic diversity of the Cannabis plant as well as the economic diversity of the cannabis industry. “Without documentation, how can any of these farmers prove they had things before they were patented? We have yet to see how this will play out,” Schechter says.

The effects of these patents on the cannabis industry still remain to be seen. How can you enforce federal patents on something federally illegal?

New evidence may invalidate a lot of THC testing that is done after people die from accidents or natural causes. Research tries to tie MJ to deaths by looking at levels in the body after people die. Researchers/toxicologists have found what is described as “Oh my god” levels of THC in post mortem analysis.

Post-Mortem THC levels do not shed light on intoxication Levels

Researchers have found that the death greatly affects THC levels in the blood. Potentially discounting all roadside and death related research into cannabis.

If you take a blood sample from a living person, and it is low or within legal limit, but if the day that day, the levels shoot up to “oh my god” levels, due to the body breaking down and releasing it.

Coroners/toxicologists being asked to determine whether marijuana played a role in death state that “we couldn't really answer that question, it is not scientifically possible. because what happens is that if take you the sample after death the results produce artificially high, “sky high”, levels of THC that make you think “oh my god” by in facts its just an artifact from the body breaking down.

“We cant rely on post-mortem THC concentrations when it come to the impairment that  somebody was at or the level they had in their the system when they were alive.”

The fresher the body, the lower the blood levels of THC.

A recent study conducted by a federal agency, on Police Officer Exposure to cannabis smoke at stadium events, found that over half of officers tested positive for THC after

and they concluded with the recommendation that those officers who are bothered by marijuana smoke and its effects should be assigned to other locations (where exposure .)

Evaluation of Police Officer Exposure to Secondhand cannabis smoke at Open-air Stadium events.

Researchers involved Police officers who worked in areas around and within the University’s football stadium (50K+ capacity). Officers were assigned to patrol various areas in on foot, bicycle, and various small vehicles. Before, after, and during concert events.

19 of 29 (66%) had detectable levels of THC in their blood.

Symptoms reported were red eyes, dry mouth, headache, and coughing, were reported by over 20% of officers.

However, subjective reporting of a contact high was low.

One of the Recommendations:

Recommendations: Assign police officers who report being bothered by secondhand marijuana smoke should be assigned to other locations, where exposure would be low or non-existent.

A study of police officers' exposure to secondhand marijuana smoke at open-air stadium events found "measurable amounts of THC in personal and area air samples" and that "small amounts of THC-COOH, a chemical marker of THC exposure, were detected in urine samples, but not in blood samples," but that "the amount found in the urine would not be considered positive in a routine drug screening test."

Preventative Medicine Reports Indoor Cannabis Smoke and Children’s Health

A recent study found that the air quality of cannabis smoking households is linked to a greater number of adverse health outcomes (but not because of the drugs effect.)

A study found that "odds of reporting a greater number of adverse health outcomes were 1.83 times higher for children of families with indoor cannabis smoking vs families without cannabis smoking, after controlling for exposure to cigarette smoke and other covariates" but that "our results do not indicate a statistically significant association."

Air particle monitors were placed in 298 homes with at least one child under 14.

15% smoked cannabis indoors, 48% of those said they smoked cigerettes inside.

Health outcomes : 31% said none, 44.8% said 1, and 24.1% reported 2 or more.

Types of outcomes: ED visits, ear infection, bronchitis, asthma, skin conditions

Due to higher particulate matter in the air, lower air quality.

Cannabis producers appear to assume that descheduling would facilitate a robust market in cannabis-based edibles and dietary supplements. In fact, neither of these things is true. If cannabis were descheduled, the FDA's complex and comprehensive regulatory framework governing foods, drugs, and dietary supplements would preclude much of this anticipated commerce. For example, any medical claims about cannabis would require the seller to complete the rigorous new drug approval process, the cost of which will be prohibitive for most current traditional providers.

Science/Human: Cannabis use is associated with a lower probability of obesity in healthy people

In a representative group for the US population, who were followed for 3 years cannabis use was associated with a lower increase of BMI (body mass index). Researchers of the Department of Family Medicine of Michigan State University in East Lansing, USA, published their research in the International Journal of Epidemiology. Adults completed computer-assisted personal interviews on cannabis use, body weight and height at Waves 1 (2001-2002) and 2 (2004-2005).

At wave 2, 77% of the participants never used cannabis, 18% had discontinued use, 3% were initiates and 2% were persistent users. Estimated BMI change over 3 years shows an increase for all subgroups. Compared with never-users, there was an inverse association of cannabis use with obesity and body mass index.

Science: Degradation of THC over a course of 4 years under different storage conditions

Researchers of the Laboratory of Environmental Hygiene and Forensic Toxicology of the DMPO Department in Venice, Italy, investigated the degradation of THC in herbal and resin materials containing different initial concentrations of THC. Four representative samples were collected from each study material and were maintained for a prolonged time (four years) under different controlled storage conditions: (A) light and room temperature (22°C); (B) darkness and room temperature; (C) darkness and refrigeration (4 °C); (D) darkness and freezing (-20 °C)

Almost 100% of THC was degraded after four years under conditions A and B (room temperature, light or dark). Data indicated that the storage temperature and light exposure had two different effects on the conversion of THC to CBN. Models were proposed which allow to predict the storage time, if unknown, and the initial content of THC, from the measurement of THC and CBN content at any time under storage condition A.

Monoecy- male and female flowers on the same plant. Is an aberration used by breeders to create relatively stable monoecious hemp cultivators

Notes on the word of the day:

Cannabis is normally dioecious, which means unisexual

male or female flowers develop on separate plants, although cosexual monoecious or hermaphrodite examples with both sexes produced on one plant do occur. Cannabis is anemophilous (wind pollinated), relying on air currents to carry pollen grains from male plants

to female plants.

The hairs on a cannabis plant, usually white, turning

orange or reddish color when drying or curing, are the sexual organs, the stigmas, which are adhered to a bract, the bract is covered in hundreds of resinous trichomes, which produce an aromatic resin that we all know and love.

Normally, a male plant sheds its pollen and dies. Female

plants can keep on maturing for months, an flowers are formed if no pollination occurs.

Under

normal conditions, cannabis populations will produce about a 1:1 ratio of male and female plants.

Monoecy- male and female flowers on the same plant. Is an aberration used by breeders to create relatively stable monoecious hemp cultivators.

BECAUSE artificial selection under

cultivation for certain characteristics, such as female flower forms, result in abnormal sex ratios.

Stress, the environment , and genetic factors can influence ratios of male to females and co-sexual individuals.

Word of the day: Tincture - Notes below:

What is a tincture you may ask? Tinctures are liquid extracts made from herbs that you take orally (by mouth). They are usually extracted in alcohol (known here on our website as "regular"), but they can also be extracted in vegetable glycerine or apple cider vinegar (non-alcohol). Tinctures are easy and convenient to use. Tinctures are also easier to give to children as they have to take only small amounts (see Children's Dosage Guide for suggestions). Because they are taken directly under the tongue, they enter the bloodstream much more quickly and directly than by any other means. This means that the action in the body is usually quicker. Although some herbs will have an immediate effect, such as those used to help one relax, others that are more nutritive and building in nature may take several weeks of continual use before best results are seen (much like a multi-vitamin).

In the 19th century, the Irish surgeon O’Shaughnessy reintroduced the use of cannabis from India into Western medicine. Cannabis sativa L. (Cannabaceae)—largely in the form of ethanolic tinctures—was then part of main Western pharmacopoeias until the 1930s, when it was removed gradually with increasing recreational use and its legal prosecution 

In the second half of the 19th century, over 100 scientific articles were published in Europe and the United States about the therapeutic value of cannabis.13 The climax of the medical use of cannabis by Western medicine occurred in the late 19th and early 20th century. Various laboratories marketed cannabis extracts or tinctures, such as Merck (Germany), Burroughs-Wellcome (England), Bristol-Meyers Squibb (United States), Parke-Davis (United States), and Eli Lilly (United States).

As non-alcohol tinctures have no alcohol content to them to act as a preservative, they can easily become contaminated and are at risk for growing mold. 

Alcohol, pregnancy and drug interactions: One dose of an alcohol-based tincture has approximately the same alcohol content as eating a very ripe banana

Sativex is licensed in about 30 countries, an insane about of gold standard clinical research is published about this product, which is essentially a tincture with a spray nozzle.

The 95% confidence interval (CI) is used to estimate the precision of the OR. A large CI indicates a low level of precision of the OR, whereas a small CI indicates a higher precision of the OR. It is important to note however, that unlike the p value, the 95% CI does not report a measure’s statistical significance. In practice, the 95% CI is often used as a proxy for the presence of statistical significance if it does not overlap the null value (e.g. OR=1). Nevertheless, it would be inappropriate to interpret an OR with 95% CI that spans the null value as indicating evidence for lack of association between the exposure and outcome.

Consistent with existing literature (Schauer et al., 2017), African Americans were more likely than other racial/ethnic groups to report smoking blunts in the past month, respectively. A study recently published in the journal Contemporary Drug Problems offers some answers. Researchers looked at each state’s marijuana laws and analyzed their political, demographic, economic and social characteristics to identify various trends.

In conclusion, our data show that lifetime cannabis use, but not in the last year, is associated with better working memory and processing speed and worse real-world functioning in the area of socially useful activities in patients with schizophrenia-related disorders. While this may be surprising, we think that in fact it could represent some clinical differences between cannabis-induced psychosis and psychosis per se. 

Does cannabis improve cognitive function but make it harder to work, study? Is this research contrived or just controversial?

In this study, they demonstrated that cannabis use throughout life is not related to the functioning of patients, neither in the area of personal and social relationships nor in the area of personal care; it was also not related to disturbing and aggressive behaviour. But socially useful activities such work and study appears to be negatively affected.

Among the participants in the remedial driving program, researchers, based on sruvey data, found that friends of participants were generally seen as more accepting of DUIC than family, and responses from participants, that data indicated there were indications that the opinions of others who use cannabis were regarded as more credible than the opinions of those who do not use the drug.
