Part one of this pod was recorded back in May when Imogen was launching her debut album Connection with a concert at St Martin in the Fields. We chatted about some of the tracks - including her work with renowned sports psychologist Dr. Pippa Grange and with friend of TIAB Charlotte Harding.

Imogen also discusses the hazardous filming of a music video and the level of work that goes into singlehandedly releasing and promoting an album…turns out it’s quite a lot!

Jack is an inspired choice for Cheltenham - as cofounder and director of Through The Noise he has programmed more than 130 concerts with innovative ensembles and repertoire in an eclectic mix of venues. He brings this visionary approach to the festival whilst still appealing to it’s loyal audience.

We chatted to Jack about Cheltenham festival highlights, balancing the new with what has already been established and potential future plans. He tells us about some of the less conventional venues and performances he’s helped bring together over the years - nowhere is too much of a challenge to stage a concert if you put your mind to it!

Jack is an inspirational person and his can-do attitude will make for exciting seasons ahead at the Cheltenham Festival.

Sound the klaxon - it’s a national treasure alert!

This week we are honoured to be joined by internationally celebrated Mezzo-soprano Dame Sarah Connolly.

Dame Sarah has had an incredible career to date with standout performances including Giulio Cesare at Glyndebourne , multiple roles at the Met, the Royal Opera House, La Scala, Paris Opera and, of course Admiral Nelson in full naval regalia at the Last Night of the Proms.

Dame Sarah’s 24/25 season includes playing Auntie in WNO’s new production of Peter Grimes and Dido in Dido and Aeneas at Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw.

You may well recognise James’ dulcet tones as he has previously guest hosted the podcast for an Ivor Novello Awards special. This was a baptism of fire due to some speed guerilla reporting and Verity’s technical inabilities. It felt only right that we get James back for a full episode to banish the memories of his chaotic first appearance and restore his faith in podcasting!

Having spent many years working as a freelance cellist in New York Stephanie relocated to London and has since been working in the West End on shows including Aspects of Love and Hello Dolly as well as various solo and chamber projects.

We spent a lovely morning with Stephanie discussing growing up in a musical family, highs and lows in her cello studies and how things don’t always work out the way we expect them to.

Stephanie talks about working on Broadway and the similarities/contrasts with the West End. We discuss audiences in 2025, shows that have been particularly special to her and what drew her back to theatre after swearing off it!

We are joined for episode 132 by recorder player supremo Ian Wilson.

Ian is the principal recorder professor at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, the Head of Woodwind at Eton College and is the visiting recorder specialist at the North East of Scotland Music School in his hometown of Aberdeen. 

We were so pleased Ian agreed to come back to chat to us again having originally joined us last April. Due to various Three In A Bar style holdups we never managed to release that episode so have a brand shiny new chat with Ian for you!

We talk to Ian about his extensive recorder selection, how the sound of a great recorder ensemble is definitely not what you remember from Primary School days but also a harrowing experience involving  hundreds of renditions of the Mexican Hat dance - something surely no one should ever have to experience? 

Ian demonstrates his quite astounding knowledge of bird song with a starting resemblance to a British countryside stalwart. 

We chat about the use of recorders in various film and TV scores and its renewed popularity.

As we air this interview, Roxanna has just been presented with the Ivors special award for ‘outstanding works collection’…And outstanding it truly is! She is particularly recognized for her choral works, including Faithful Journey - A Mass for Poland, Four Choral Seasons, and Coronation Sanctus for the coronation of King Charles the Third.

Roxanna has a great passion for world music and her Four World Seasons was written for violinist Tasmin Little - who also happened to present her with her award this week.

Roxanna has done much groundbreaking work in writing music that builds bridges between faiths. Her violin concerto Abraham incorporates Christian, Islamic and Jewish chant.

We chatted to Roxanna about collecting her first Ivor (unbelievably!), composing for the King, the emotions of reworking some of her father‘s Polish folk songs, and the sensitivity required in composing interfaith music.

Roxanna also talks about how she accidentally discovered Catholicism and gives us an insight into her compositional process.

We discuss his early days of art college, double bass and free jazz, his early iconic pieces The Sinking Of The Titanic and Jesus' Blood Never Failed Me Yet and his creative relationship with Brian Eno. Over his career he has written five operas, twenty ballets and a long list of instrumental, orchestral and vocal works.

He has collaborated with many non-classical musicians over the years, including Tom Waits, Father John Misty, Charlie Haden, Bill Frisell, Natalie Merchant, Iarla O'Lionaird, Gavin Friday, Bertrand Belin and Mocke, and with many visual artists such as Bruce McLean, David Ward, Tim Head, James Hugonin, Bill Woodrow, Will Alsop, the Quay brothers, Juan Muñoz and Massimo Bartolini.

He divides his time between a Leicestershire village and Vancouver Island, and we discuss his approach to writing in various locations, and in particular the importance of just the right pencil for the job. There really is a lot of time spent talking about this particular pencil.

Monique is currently on a European tour and will be appearing at the Cambridge folk festival this month. Aside from festivals, she can frequently be found with her cello up mountains, on cliff tops and more conventionally in concert halls and jazz clubs across the world.

Monique chats to Seb and Verity about some of her recent performances as well as recording her latest album Sight, performing with rap legend Eminem, her musical roots and how the heck she manages to so successfully sing and play at the same time!

Oliver is an internationally renowned conductor, working frequently with orchestras including the CBSO, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Orchestre national du Capitole de Toulouse, Orchestre national d'Île-de-France and Ulster Orchestra.

Oliver founded Classical Pride in 2023 with an inaugural concert by the CBSO at the Barbican. This year it has been extended to 5 concerts starting with Classical Drag and culminating with Oliver making his LSO debut at the Barbican in a concert celebrating LBGTQ+ artists and composers hosted by Nick Grimshaw (find ticket links below).

Ben is a BAFTA winning composer, but also a well renowned and much in demand conductor, orchestrator and arranger with a string of TV and film credits to his name.

We met up with Ben in his writing room, tucked away at the top of Air Studios for a chat about just a fraction of his incredible musical output. (N.B there is a glaring error in the fact we didn’t get round to chatting about his work on last year’s Beatles single Now and Then - maybe next time?)

Ben talks about important relationships he has formed with musicians over the years, how he found himself with a room at Air and composing themes for the brilliant BBC drama series Happy Valley.

He discusses the importance of time efficiency and knowing when to switch off, as well as realising when a job Isn’t working out and how to get out of it.

Jésus has been doing brilliant work at Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía - the incredible building in Valencia which is home to Les Arts, with a huge focus on social responsibility. There are productions specifically for Under 29s, prison performances, opera in a truck heading to remote villages, performances in homes for the elderly and so much more.

It is a breath of fresh air hearing from Jésus about his exciting plans and programming for the coming season. Opera is at the heart of Les Arts but there are frequent Flamenco, Folk, Pop and solo performances bringing new crowds and creating a centre for everyone.

Jésus chats about changing audience habits, what he’s excited about in the 2024 season and beyond, how you go about programming for upcoming season and some of his favourite community projects.

Rachael is cellist on the West End production of Frozen and is a busy freelancer & session player as well as being a mother of two…..Chuck ADHD into the mix and her journey as a recovering alcoholic and life isn’t always straightforward.

Rachael speaks about getting her diagnosis and how this has enabled her to make sense of elements in her life that have previously caused difficulty and anxiety. Their guest is THE go to man for all things electric violin Benedict Heaney. Ben has spent his career and studies recording, performing and researching the electric violin and has pushed the boundaries of what can be achieved with the instrument. He also runs the brilliant Music Health Service working with extremely poorly and vulnerable members of the community bringing top class music to them.

Ben shows off his pride and joy, the only original Fender violin of it's kind - it is a thing to behold (see a link to a picture below). They chat about the resistance he faced in attempting to further his studies of the electric violin at music college and some, ermm...memorable performances at the RNCM!

Ben describes the earliest forms of the electric instrument which leads to a possibly ill-advised/definitely harebrained scheme from Rob...watch this space.

Hannah is truly hot right now with a plethora of awards and nominations to her name. She is a critically acclaimed film, tv and theatre composer - her Ivor was awarded for her score for The Midwich Cuckoos. She is an artist in residence at Kings Place where she will be curating a number of concerts over the next year and is also about to embark on a tour of her Mercury nominated album Fir Wave......oh and just as a side note she happens to present the hugely popular Radio 3 show Night Waves.

Seb and Verity met Hannah back in April, the morning after press night for Dancing at Lughnasa at the National Theatre (scored by Hannah) and the announcement of her Ivors nomination. Her excellent level of chat post party highlights what a true pro she is!

Conversation covers writing for television and theatre, composing Fir Wave during lockdown and now touring it - something she never expected to happen. Hannah also talks about her upcoming fully improvised concert with percussionist Beibei Wang - an anxiety dream situation for Verity and potentially quite stress inducing for Hannah! They talk about getting a work/life balance and how there needn't be one path into the music profession.

You'll all be delighted to know there is also a smattering of dog chat......

Matthew kindly took time away from his holiday to chat with Seb and Verity about his soon to be released album Electric. This album brings together a unique collection of works for cello and electronics from the last 40 years and features compositions by the likes of Anna Meredith, Joby Talbot, Jonathan Harvey and Oded Ben-Tal.

Matthew talks about the joys of being hands on through the editing process, how he grapples with letting go of imperfections whilst constantly striving for improvements. He also chats about his ‘Around Britten’ tour and the weird and wonderful venues he performed in - think caves, a lighthouse & a swimming pool amongst others!

They also discuss the conundrum of getting audiences into contemporary music concerts and Matthew’s excitement/trepidation at recording his own compositions for the first time….

There are classic Zencastr issues which present in the form of a healthy two second delay. Seb has worked his editing magic on it but there may be a few eggy moments which we can assure you are purely tech related….we hope!

This is actually Millie's third appearance on the pod having popped up briefly in Cat Parker's episode and featured as part of the Ashton/Melhuish dynasty back in 2020.....a lot has changed for her since then, including graduating from GSMD after (gulp) 16 years!

Millie chats about her days living a double life as a student by day, busy freelancer by evening and hard partying fresher by night! They also discuss taking the next step away from music college, guest leading the 2nd violins at the Philharmonia and how she approaches this role. Millie talks about her time at Prussia Cove on the highly prestigious chamber music course as well as her new found love of all things outdoors, wild swimming and finding time for other things away from music.

She suffered with some horrific health issues right at the crux point in her studies and tells Seb and Verity all about that awful time and how she managed to get through it. It's fairly graphic and pretty shocking.....but lets just say, be thankful you can't see the photos!

Millie is a truly incredible person who has achieved so much already at just 24 years old - and through some seriously challenging circumstances. This episode would make a very interesting and insightful listen for anyone studying or just finishing their studies at music college....as well as anyone else who likes a darned good catch with an old pal!

Joel is an actor, choreographer and director who has a stellar list of West End shows he has performed in including Chicago, The Waitress, School of Rock and Funny Girl.

Joby is embarking on a UK tour at the end of September performing his new album A Percussionist’s Songbook - a collection of specially commissioned songs by eight composers, including Graham Fitkin, Dobrinka Tabakova, Gabriel Prokofiev and Joby himself!

The conversation takes place in Joby’s home studio which in a former life was both a coach house and a hairdresser - conversation ranges from where they are going on holiday this year to whether it’ll be a full head of highlights or a half…only kidding!

Joby discusses how the balance of his career has shifted over the last few years with a much greater emphasis on recording. With this in mind, he chats about the prospect of returning to live performances with a mixture of excitement and trepidation.

They discuss Joby’s weird, wonderful and extensive collection of percussion instruments, Tom Cruise’s penchant for bongos, workshopping and recording Little Simz’s epic album Sometimes I Might Be Introvert and the pitfalls of performing using a full Fanta bottle and electronics with reference to a specific incident in Cambridge…

Kuljit was one of the pioneers of British Bhangra and has produced, recorded and performed on copious amounts of records for British and Indian artists. He works extensively as a session musician as well as collaborating with artists across a multitude of genres - jazz saxophonist Andy Sheppard is a long time collaborator as well as artists including the Orlando consort, BBC Concert Orchestra, Ringo Starr and Andrew Lloyd Webber on Bombay Dreams.

Kuljit previously performed and had a brief chat at the TIAB live show (see link below) so Seb and Verity were delighted he agreed to come back for round 2. Conversation includes demystifying tabla playing and debunking some of the myths surrounding Eastern music, bringing together performers from all genres and some weird and wonderful requests he’s received.

They also chat about a chance meeting in Pizza Express (not Prince Andrew but music theatre royalty was involved) and making his West End debut. Kuljit discusses his plans for potential world domination (our words not his) with his new invention - the electric tabla. Watch this space!

Episode 82 features true Broadway royalty. None other than orchestrator, arranger and producer Doug Besterman. Doug is a multiple Tony and Drama Desk award winner. His list of theatre and film credits is vast, including The Producers, Young Frankenstein, Aladdin, Fosse, Mary Poppins, Captain America, Chicago and co-orchestrations for a little known song named Let It Go...

Seb and Verity chatted with Doug on a sunny August day during his time at the Chichester Festival Theatre, where he had been co orchestrating the new 30th anniversary production of Crazy For You with Mark Cumberland. He talks about his process of re orchestrating and down sizing Bill Brohn's original work and dividing up the workload with Mark. It's a whirlwind process and competitive spreadsheeting helped keep up the note rate!

Doug talks about his early days in the industry including a dubious stint as a pianist in a Korean Theme park and a nerve jangling project for Alan Menken, with whom he has gone on to work with extensively. He also chats about working with legends such as Mel Brookes and Barbara Streisand.

As a fellow WSET certified wine buff (bore), Verity couldn't let this interview pass without quizzing Doug on his wine choices!

Seb and Verity chat to Katya via zoom on a sweaty mid-July afternoon and for nostalgia's sake enjoy some zoom related hitches (haven't you missed them?!). They discuss Katya's upcoming solo recital at the Wigmore Hall on 21 July which features amongst other things an exciting new composition, Figaro's Dances by her long time friend and collaborator Elena Langer. The concert is based around mazurkas and fantasies so she patiently explains what a mazurka is to two musicians who clearly need to revisit Grade 5 theory...

Katya talks about selecting concert repertoire, overcommitting and some nerve jangling experiences when stepping in for last minute performances. She shares her concert preparation techniques, including performing to her friends - no walk in the park when your friends include some of the finest pianists in the world.

Seb and Verity ask Katya about how she set up the London Piano Festival and what to expect in this year's event.

Katya touches upon how it feels for her as a Russian in these torrid times and the difficulty of having parents still living and working in Russia. She also talks about her time studying in Jerusalem and the new freedom and opportunities this allowed her.

Johannes' groundbreaking new album Alone Together is released on 17 June 2022 and this episode is released in conjunction with this.

Seb and Verity meet Johannes at Platoon's state of the art studios in North London where most of his new album was recorded. They were treated to a sneak preview of some of the tracks played through Dolby Atmos which was a truly mind blowing experience!

Johannes chats in depth about the pioneering way in which this album was recorded and the painstakingly detailed multi-tracking work required - thankfully with a calm and level headed producer on hand! He talks about his music choices for the album and working with the six young American composers he commissioned.

They discuss how teaching has informed his performance and try to decide which is the greater challenge - performing one of the major concertos with the world's leading orchestras or making sure the tech works in his post concert foyer shows on the electric cell.

Nicole has held positions with the LSO and ENO and works extensively as a freelancer, appearing as guest leader, in various west end shows and in major film sessions. She has also turned her hand to orchestral session fixing - her credits including the sixth Harry Potter movie. She co-produced a highly successful album for children - FunKey Rhymes - which has made her a huge star in the Philpott household. Nicole is the founder and managing director of Musical Orbit, a council member for ESTA and now bringing her boundless energy to NSSO. Exhausted? We don't know how she does it either!

We were hugely grateful to Nicole for sparing time on Good Friday to jump on a zoom call for a chat before she hit Mercedes Benz world....It's a jam packed conversation covering everything from the terrifying yet thrilling experience of recording Star Wars scores with the legend John Williams, to recording Old Macdonald via 'Is it Cake?'

Nicole discusses managing and overcoming performance anxiety and how Musical Orbit has helped match students with teachers from as far apart as Australia and Somerset. What Sam doesn't know about the Beatles ain't worth knowing, having for many years been heavily involved in remastering their complete back catalogue. He recently worked with Giles Martin alongside Peter Jackson on the hugely successful documentary series Get Back. Sam also works extensively on film sessions as a recording engineer and mixer including The Hobbit, Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows and The Man From U.N.C.L.E.

Seb and Verity catch up with Sam in his home in Cornwall, where he is currently in the process of converting a Methodist Chapel into a recording studio... sounds pretty idyllic. They chat extensively about his work on the Beatles' albums, watching endless hours of their old rehearsal footage, the reception from diehard Beatles fans to the remastered albums and whether he can still listen to their music after all theses years immersed in it!

Sam talks about how he started out - in part with a DIY set up in a woodshed - how he worked his way up the ranks at Abbey Road and how he negotiates his way through tricky film sessions where it's a hotbed of conflicting opinions.

In a perhaps ill advised move, Verity and Seb invited listeners to submit questions for Sam, with varying quality in the responses! Sam's answers involve some mortifying incidents picked up on mics, hidden Beatles 'artifacts' at Abbey Road and an artfully sidestepped answer to what Verity was like at school....

Seb and Verity catch up with Jules at his studio in Berlin to chat about his eclectic and multi faceted career. They discuss his early days as a trumpeter, the inception of Heritage Orchestra during his studies at GSMD - an era when most players didn't have mobile phones and those who did hadn't topped up their credit for a term. Jules talks about their first gig, taking a leap of faith committing his time and energies to the orchestra and a memorable early touring experience to Montreaux with a bus load of overexcited students.

Jules also chats about the joy of working with BBCSO where he is Creative Artist in Association and what this role entails. He and Verity share a brief reminiscence of their time at GSMD, along with some of the interesting characters encountered there. He tells them about a cringeworthy exchange with Razorlight's Johnny Borrell and some chance encounters that led to great things.

Letty is a French Horn player and Beth a percussionist, both of which are instruments that have not been historically viewed as 'feminine' choices.

They also share their own personal experiences through educational and professional lives as talk about what can be done to start redressing the balance - in a nutshell, we need to be prepared for some eggy moments!

This week Seb and Verity are joined by Emmy Nominated, critically acclaimed film composer, Natalie Holt. Natalie’s work includes the score for the recent Marvel series Loki, as well as work on rims including Paddington and Journey’s End.

Having come perilously close to complete technical failure in the past, in their first meeting with Natalie the recording spectacularly malfunctioned. Incredibly, having already found an hour in her busy schedule, Natalie came back for round two which is what you hear in this podcast. Seb and Verity attempt to reword various lines of questioning as well as being more factually accurate than first time around.

Conversation includes how Natalie pitched for Loki, composing suites for films, musical pass the parcel and making the theramin great again! Natalie also discusses some of the exciting new projects she’s working on, including BatGirl and the fascinating sounding Cocaine Bear.

Natalie talks about some of her exciting exploits as a violinist, including playing at the closing ceremony of the London 2012 Olympics and in the sea in Sardinia with Craig David.....

The central theme of this episode is how Samara has navigated living with ADHD and successfully carved out a career as a freelance cellist. She only had a diagnosis in her thirties so discusses the impact ADHD had on her life and music college education.

Samara is both candid and fascinating, talking about something that is rarely discussed in the music profession. Despite not wanting to be held up as a spokesperson on ADHD, she has excellent advice and insight into negotiating life with this diagnosis.

Seb and Verity were lucky enough to catch Alicia at her home in Seattle - sadly for them, only via zoom - whilst on a short break from Sylvan Esso’s U.S tour. 

Alicia chats about hitting the road again and how the band and crew have been spending their downtime - think tie dying T-shirts in a tent in the middle of nowhere.....

She talks about learning to sound engineer on her first job in a club in Seattle and how she made the move into touring. She tells a great story about the first band she toured with and the grizzly details of what they were up to!

Mercifully these days Alicia’s bands are much easier to work with - and the budgets a little higher - none the less, Seb and Verity spring some nightmare tour scenarios on her and see how she’d handle them.

Another excellent Alicia fact is that she recently went back into education to train as a pastry chef. She discusses what led her to this, the reality of working as a baker and shipping baked goods to friends during lockdown.

Ska comes in for another pasting, along with late 90s fashion and, as ever, there are multiple digressions including a brief US Office vs UK Office debate, a trumpet interlude from Verity’s 9 year old son and some minor internet issues.

Katie talks about depping on other shows (including some shared love for Hamilton), learning how to say no to things, successful collaborations with pop acts and the dancing/playing conundrum.....with reference to podcast favourite, Kelly Pratt. They discuss crazy commutes, mastering backing vocals and an amazing University course Katie taught in NYC - it'll make you all want to go back into education!

The focus of the album is on bringing great works by female composers Into the spotlight, having been largely ignored until now. Esther discusses how she made the bold decision to strike out online when still at music college and the resistance she faced from staff and peers.
