Cheltenham secured a good 0-2 win in the first leg leaving Cobblers a mountain to climb but as we know from Bristol Rovers in '98 the tie is still alive.

We discuss the main talking points from the 1st leg at Sixfields, the missed penalty, Curle's route 1 football and what Town need to do to get into the tie.

Curle's contract is also a point of discussion with the podcast split over the Cobblers manager deserving a new deal.

There's few players that know more about the playoffs than Clarkson, who played a Championship playoff with Stoke City before joining Town and getting to Wembley 2 years on the spin.

Clarkson talks about the character and skill needed to succeed in the playoffs as Cobblers did in '97 when beating Swansea by a free-kick from his car school pal John Frain.

The image from a year later, when Clarkson scored in the 2nd leg comeback is seared onto the retinas of Cobblers fans and goes down as one of the all-time great NTFC moments. Just what was he doing there in the first place? We find out.

Also joining us is Cheltenham fan Own Knight to give us the rundown on the Robins and their preparations for the game.

Matthew came in on loan for a short period in 96/97 and created a big impact with his skilful ball-carrying performances. So much so that Rush has been mentioned in dispatches as one of the best loanees the club has had, contributing to the season which saw the Cobblers beat Swansea at Wembley.

Matthew Rush isn't your standard footballer, in fact he barely watched football as a kid but excelled at the sport earning himself a place at West Ham United. Rush talks about the family atmosphere at Upton Park under Billy Bonds and how he broke into the first team, scoring an excellent volley V Ipswich.

Rush is always frank and he talks about tension with Harry Redknapp and having to leave the club he loved for a new direction at Norwich.

Sadly that move saw a major injury from which he had to learn to walk again but he fought back to fitness with a loan move to the Cobblers.

Sadly Rush's career was curtailed by injury and he retrained as a teacher, thrown in the deep end in an inner city school.

Sport obviously runs in a certain part of the Rush genes however as his daughter is a successful tennis player and Matthew talks about moving to Barcelona to help with her on the court training.

This is a considered talk about a career that went from the Premier League to Division 4 in the space of a year, a career well lived but also a sense of what could have been?

Josh talks us through his eventful football career that took in multiple playoffs and promotions with rarely a dull moment.

He discusses growing up with Bristol Rovers, being part of the Gas setup that lost to Cobblers in the '98 playoff Semi-Finals.

It's fair to say that Josh found his best form at Sixfields under Colin Calderwood playing with such talent as Martin Smith and later Sean Dyche.

Low chats about the art of the winger and what built Cobblers into an automatic promotion team after two successive years of Playoff heartache.

An intelligent lad, Josh lays out how his thoughts turned to a career post football in the legal field and the difference of his current day job from the thrill of being a professional footballer.

The sport clearly runs in the blood though as Josh's son is a talented footballer and he talks about the next steps for his capable offspring.

McGoldrick had a great spell at Selhurst Park, becoming a fans favourite. He talks frankly about a bad injury and the hard work of bouncing back to earn catch the eye of Arsenal.

Eddie was part of a talented Gunners side, playing in some memorable European nights v Standard Liege & Parma and moving into the Republic of Ireland setup. He talks about fulfilling a childhood dream of playing for Emerald Isle and resisting the advances of the England setup.

That culminated in being named in the Ireland squad for World Cup USA 1994 and Eddie recounts the camaraderie of the Irish group at the time, managed by the great Jack Charlton.

Hard work underpinned Eddie's success and he discusses his role as a coach to the next generation of players and imparting his work ethic that saw him go from part-time football to the Premier League.

John-Joe was a key figure in the NTFC 2015/16 title winning season earning cult status among the shoe army with his dominant displays in the centre of the park. He talks us through his formative years at Watford, before moves to Colchester and Bristol Rovers and then finding "home" at Sixfields.

Things were far from straightforward though with O'Toole finding himself transfer listed and sent out on loan before staking his claim to a starting berth in the talented "Wilders Wonders" eleven that smashed League 2 with the backdrop of unpaid wages and financial crisis at the Cobblers. He also discusses the differing relations with managers at the club and his exit under Keith Curle.

There's discussion of key games and players in that magic season including the killer move V Oxford where he took out four opponents with superb control of the ball.

Overall his story is one of mutual appreciation with the fans and it's pleasing to hear JJ talk about his current success in League 1 with Burton and his thoughts on becoming a manager.

Clarkson talks us through the beauty of captaining the club he supports in Birmingham City, then moving to Stoke before taking the chance of dropping down the divisions to join Ian Atkins' project at SIxfields.

Clarkey was the epitome of the reliable right-back taking care of the right side in a rock solid defence that gave Cobblers a base to build on that ended in Wembley glory in 1997.

Ian discusses the subsequent season where Town again reached the twin towers of Wembley and the effort that too. Of course that '98 comeback against Bristol Rovers in the playoff semi-final at Sixfields lives long in the memory for Cobblers fans and he recounts the night clear as day, as well as the movement which led to his crucial goal.

As usual at Cobblers nothing is plain sailing and Clarkson talks frankly of the physical and mental pain of breaking his leg and watching from the sideline as the club were relegated. He later joined Kidderminster and found one final challenge in his career to inspire the Harriers to promotion.

His is a story of unassuming hard work, passion for the game and some beautiful moments at Cobblers where the club were on a real roll.

Ryan talks about joining up with family friend Colin Calderwood at Cobblers, learning from such quality players as Sean Dyche and Ian Taylor. Gilligan came into his own in a decent Stuart Gray side alongside such talent as Mark Bunn, Bradley Johnson and Adebayo Akinfenwa and Ryan talks about the tough training that gave Gray's side a physical edge to match the good play.

That night at Anfield is a number 1 moment for plenty of people associated with the Cobblers and Gilligan is no different. He talks about playing with Ian Sampson and the work that went into turning Liverpool over on their own turf.

Things weren't always plain sailing however and he talks frankly about moments of tension with Gary Johnson as well as his decision to move to Sweden, one that ultimately paid off by linking up with Graham Potter (now Brighton boss) at emerging Swedish side Östersunds FK.

A humble Corazzin talks us through his life growing up in Canada and moving to Italy to pursue his dream of playing professional football. From there Carlo played for Cambridge United and Plymouth Argyle. He explains how he turned down Watford for Northampton, continuing to notch on a regular basis but perhaps not being played as consistently as he would have liked.

Carlo then went on to success in the Gold Cup in LA in 2000 before moving on to Oldham Athletic and then back home with the Vancouver Whitecaps.

Corazzin's story is one of desire, quality and huge pride, culminating with being inducted into the Canadian soccer Hall Of Fame.

Stuart's work is rightly celebrated not just for the tremendous photographs of such lost grounds as Roker Park Sunderland and the Vetch Field Swansea but for the snapshots of supporter life that he collected along the way.

The photographer shares some of the techniques he used to capture such brilliant images as the Sunderland fans "Looking Up" on their terrace full of every emotion that can fans can go through and also some stories from traversing the country and treading the terraces.

Stuart was a regular visitor to watch Northampton Town and he describes one of his favourite shoots at the old County Ground where he caught the "No Swearing Please" sign placed in front of the Hotel End.

His visual journey came at the time of great change in the game post Hillsbrough and the move to the big money game and we are left with the question if the game is any better and pondering what comes next?

6ft 5" forward Hubertz was a key member of Stuart Gray's side which finished a decent 9th in League 1, playing alongside such talent as Adebayo Akinfenwa, Mark Bunn, Andy Holt, Jason Crowe, Gabor Gyepes and Bradley Johnson.

The Dane discusses his formative years in Denmark, playing in the Danish Superliga before moving to Millwall and becoming a popular player at the Den with whole hearted displays. Hubertz talks frankly about the pain of being released by the Lions and the joy of being a part of one of Northampton's most talented ever teams under Gray where Cobblers thrashed Swansea 4-2 and went to to toe with big clubs like Nottingham Forest.

Hubertz talks us through his best goal from the club- an overhead kick V Forest at Sixfields which is still remembered by Town fans now.

We'll hear that Hubertz never wanted to leave the Cobblers, the reason why he did and talk about the characteristics which make him a cult player at Northampton Town.

Wilson had his most successful spell up front for Chelsea in the late 80's-early 90's linking up with club legend Kerry Dixon with the pair notching regularly at Stamford Bridge.

As Wilson's career wound down his thoughts turned to coaching and he came on board with Ian Atkins, taking on the assistant manager role before taking the reins full-time after Atkins left the club.

Wilson breathed new life into a good side and spurred the Cobblers on to promotion in 2000 where a late run of wins saw the club go up on the English riviera at Torquay, a magic moment for all involved.

Kevin's career was one of hard work, self belief, with a couple of regrets but one punctuated by real quality.

He never courted attention and went about his business in the centre of the park for Northampton over 7 seasons and was a key player in getting Cobblers to Wembley 2 years on the bounce.

A talented young player, listen to how Hunter was part of a good crop of youngsters in his local area before going to West Brom like his hero Bryan Robson. From the Baggies, Hunter came to Sixfields to play for Ian Atkins and soon became a fans' favourite with dominant, all action displays in the middle of the park.

Roy talks about the Wembley highs and injury lows and for the first time about the upsetting way he came to leave the Cobblers.

Hunter was a player that just loved playing football and loves the Cobblers and his is a story of a player that left nothing on the pitch.

Not many Northampton players go on to play in an FA Cup Semi-Final and Steve talks us through his formative years playing 20-a-side on the Racecourse before signing for his home town club. Steve is eloquent and candid about falling out of love with the game and leaving the Cobblers before being persuaded to re-join where he went on to be a key member of the Town midfield in some difficult years.

Brown talks about working with different managers such as Clive Walker, Tony Barton, Graham Carr, Theo Foley and Phil Chard.

He also describes playing for the club in some difficult economic times, not being paid but coming through the other end to be signed by the great Martin O'Neill for Wycombe Wanderers. Brown had a fantastic career with the Chairboys becoming a fan favourite and playing Liverpool in the FA Cup Semi-Final but the Cobblers retain a place in his heart.

Steve discusses the youth setup in Northampton and how teams have targeted the area for youth talent and his current role identifying talent for a Premier League club. A real thinker who probably had his best days away from Cobblers which is sad to an extent this is an interesting listen, particularly for those that used to watch him at the County Ground.

That may as well have been the soundtrack to the Cobblers in the late 90's after Ian Atkins had come in with his "Birmingham mafia" to turn around a bottom-dwelling Town side into one that knocked on the door of the Championship.

Atko talks us through how he came to the club, briefly as a player before taking over from John Barnwell as manager and slowly but surely building the momentum that would take Town to the Twin Towers of Wembley 2 years in the spin. He talks candidly about the characters like Garry Thompson, Carl Heggs and John Gayle he brought to the club as well as some of the unsung heroes that contributed such as Matthew Rush and Ali Gibb.

Taking in classic games such as Cardiff away in the playoff semi-final and Bristol Rovers at home the following year when Sixfields truly was a fortress while also discussing important matches at Fulham and Watford, Atkins paints the picture about how the Northampton snowball grew.

Things didn't end ideally for Atkins at Town and he talks openly about the problems he and the club faced before his departure. There are too many happy memories to be too downbeat however and anyone that was there at Wembley on that beautiful day when John Frain's free -kick sent the shoe army into raptures will find some stories to put a smile on their faces.

Taking in Holty's varied career from playing at Oldham Athletic under Neil Warnock then to Hull City with Brian Little and a good spell at Wrexham.

Holt, aerially one of the best Northampton players of all time, talks us through playing with a talented team, assembled by Stuart Gray featuring the likes of Mark Bunn, Danny Jackman, Jason Crowe and Gabor Gyepes. Captain Holt has some classic stories about dealing with the big characters in the squad such as Poul Hubertz and Adebayo Akinfenwa.

Winning at Anfield would be the peak of any Cobblers player's career and Holt can remember the 2010 League Cup win under Ian Sampson like it was yesterday. Listen how the the schoolboy Man Utd fan's dream comes true via a monumental team Cobblers team effort and a well placed Abdul Osman penalty.

Left-sided defender Holt talks us through the different managing styles of John Gorman, Stuart Gray, Ian Sampson, Gary Johnson and Aidy Boothroyd with some interesting stories about each along the way.

Holt is a proper Cobblers legend, one who never courted attention, did the business on a weekly business and loved the game. This is a story of a hard fought career, played at clubs with real history.

Dig beneath the surface on Thompson's career and he has some brilliant stories from playing at Jimmy Hill's Coventry, the England U -21's to playing with the great Cyrille Regis at West Brom and Ian Wright at Crystal Palace. Thompson scored a brace for Aston Villa in the Derby at Birmingham, a great moment for the childhood Villa fan.

Tommo offers some interesting insight into the Northampton dressing room under Ian Atkins with the likes of John Frain, Ian Clarkson, David Rennie and John Gayle, all players with a connection to the Birmingham football scene. The story about the dust up between big John Gayle and Carl Heggs is one to sit back and laugh along with. Tommo talks about his friend "Akkers" management style and the many ups and couple of downs of the Atkins years.

"Stand on" is a Birmingham expression for standing up for yourself and that is what Thompson and his team mates brought to the Cobblers, building a team that went to Wembley twice in the playoffs. One of our favourite podcasts so far from an important player who didn't court attention but played with real pride.

A crowd favourite at Cobblers, Freestone talks us through his formative, goal-busting years in Nottinghamshire football, where Andy Cole also cut his teeth. Freestone then went on to Middlesbrough under Brian Robson playing with the likes of Juninho before being signed by Ian Atkins for Northampton Town.

Freestone's game was about pace and finishing and the speedy striker featured in the Cobblers side that reached Wembley in the Division 2 Playoff Final in 1998. A classic Cobblers League Cup win over West Ham followed, on one of the great cup nights at Sixfields, as Freestone notched a brace as Northampton beat the Hammers over 2 legs.

Things didn't finish ideally for Freestone at Cobblers and we talk about his departure and career since leaving the Town.

A fascinating insight into a football career from the bottom up and the instincts of a goal-scorer.
