Father's Day Favorites, Drive-Ins Ramping Up & Cinemas Open This July

This week on Pulling Focus Mick and Brian go hard on some of their favorite movies to watch with their fathers and about great movie dads. From John Wayne and Disney classics to some real tear-jerking dramas and a few Anderson-cult fare. Some you'll find obvious but you might find a few that are a surprise.

Drive-Ins coming to the rescue, filling the cinematic void with repertory film and we're loving it! It's not the best cinematic experience but the it's the experience we need. Besides it's a piece of Americana that can't be denied!

Finally we discuss the proposed opening of cinemas on July 15, 2020. Safety precautions they plan to take and how likely are Brian and Mick to jump back into theaters. Well, it depends…

Point of interest for this episode, the audio is a little rough for about the first 50 seconds of the show, it gets better so hang in there. Also, things change quickly in this crazy world and we discuss theaters opening up on July 15 and not requiring masks for the audience as part of their safety protocol. Well that didn't last 24 hours and now it's every corporate theaters' plan to require masks in their auditoriums. As they should.

Black Live Matter, Diverse Film Crews, Black Cinema Streams for Free & Films to Decompress To

The chants can be heard in the streets and the call can be found in film. Black lives matter is not a new sentiment. In the archives of cinema, from the very beginning there are films about the plight of Black Americans. Criterion is streaming black cinema for free all of June. Warner Brothers has made the heart wrenching film Just Mercy free on all platforms this month. Other studios, streaming services and online platforms are being added to the list daily. Streaming for free is great but everyone doesn't have access. Consider supporting these films and filmmakers if you can by buying the discs and donating to your local library. Share the word.

The lighter fare this week to decompress from 2020's continued onslaught included Starship Troopers, Minority Report and the entire Underworld franchise. Fun, mindless popcorn flicks to help unwind and decompress. Brian and Mick follow the rabbit hole and wind up discussing movies like Wolf Creek, Tusk, Shawshank Redemption where the fear lies in the vulnerability of being imprisoned and tormented. Horror, ain't genre grand?!

Lynn Shelton, Fred Willard, Reading Scripts and Getting Back Into Theaters

This week we celebrate the lives and work of Lynn Shelton and Fred Willard and the talent and inspiration they have given to so many people.

Skyline Indie Film Fest has some great news! We have partnered with Eventive to go virtual for out 8th festival. That's right, Skyline continues in 2020 and we are super excited for the new opportunities that this new platform provides. We have big plans and can't wait to share them with you. Brian and Mick go deep into script reading, script doctoring and delve into outlines and treatments finally landing in the television spec writing world.

We revisit getting back to theatrical viewing. The cinematic experience is under a critical eye from many. The Scene Snob and I discuss our varying takes on our experiences pre-quarantine including the revival of drive-ins due to the quarantine and we share a heartfelt love letter to cinema.

Finally, we share our indie film recommended watch for this week, two movie from the 1990s you should not miss.
