Born in Catalonia to a British mother and Thai father, Uma’s upbringing filled was filled with travel and cultural encounters that have inspired chords of empathy, and the affinity to those around her bleeds naturally into her music. With a background in classical violin training and later a degree at the University of York, Uma has continued grow in confidence, signing to Slow Dance Records and being spotted by taste maker Anthony Fantano.

With an aspiration to continue creating with like-minded, young talent, Uma, with the help of Luke Bower (previous On Repeat guest, Lucy Lu) set up a music residency entitled “Can Obert” in her house in Spain. Since then o ver twenty-five young artists and musicians, including Nilufer Yanya, Max Pope, and Amy May Ellism have collaborated to create over twenty songs in a week, the community thriving in this Woodstock-like community-focused project.

With inspirations such as Joni Mitchell, Buika, Ella Fitzgerald, Nico, Macy Gray, Bebel Gilberto, Shakira and Florence and the Machine, Uma has an unwavering sense of sincerity, and her passion towards the creative art of music, community and collaboration shines through in her work.

The Elder Island sound is an effortless blend of diverse genre's. With Lucy Lu the ambiguous name of Luke's shape shifting project, Luke effortlessly moves between solo work and collaborative sessions with an 11-strong band.

Alongside this, Luke also works collaboratively with the likes of partner Uma - check out the gorgeous Black Bees - and self-confessed confidante Puma Blue (check out his ep here). Growing up amongst London’s rich ecosystem of diverse music scenes Luke's sound developed - amongst the line up for Lucy's first outing were Ms MAURICE and Richie Seivwright of KOKOROKO, and he has since supported the likes of The Cat Empire and Loyle Carner.

Weaving a jazz-flecked melodies with a mix of sounds, instruments and production 'trickery'. Luke has found the time to build up a reputation for Lucy Lu as one of the most exciting live acts in London, alongside touring as the bassist of On Repeat fave, Nilüfer Yanya.

Fable AKA Holly is a Brighton based musician, artist and songwriter whose' music is a colourful mix of genres, and has influences of trip-hop, electronica and post-punk.

After bursting onto the scene, building a reputation as one of the UK’s most intriguing musical prospects, with widespread acclaim from MixMag, Line of Best Fit, to the Guardian and Rolling Stone, Fable vanished from view in 2016 after personal tragedy, with the resulting in a 4 year hiatus from music. 

But now she’s back, having reconnected with herself and her creativity and it releasing some seriously exciting music - we’ve had her song 'Thirsty' On Repeat!

Footshooter a London based producer, DJ and musician and style blends skippy, broken beats with atmospheric warmth from synths, keys and guitars, combining programming with live instrumentation to create an organic, rich sound. He frequently collaborates with MCs, poets and vocalists exploring different tones and moods.

In this episode, we touch upon how the work Barney undertakes with In House Records and how it influences his own music. We also talk about collaboration and creative process during lockdown and how he is preparing for his upcoming gig - the first lockdown times.

Footshooter has performed live DJ sets in support of the likes of Yussef Kamaal, Vels Trio and Alfa Mist, as well as performing regularly at south-east London night STEEZ and Brainchild Festival and has also collaborated with the likes of On Repeat favourites, Poppy Ajudha and Brother Portrait (Steamdown). His 2018 release with YAM Recordings ‘Technicolour Nights’, was met with critical acclaim, gaining plays on BBC 6 Music by Gilles Peterson, as well as regular spins on Tim Garcia's Jazz FM show, Musica Macondo.

Footshooter also hosts Sonic Fruits, a monthly show on Peckham-based community radio station Balamii Radio on the third Monday of every month, 19.00 – 21.00 GMT.

Puma Blue’s music has been described as 'voicemail ballads' and a union between J Dilla influenced grooves with pure silky vocals similar to that of Chet Baker. Inspired by an eclectic mix with the likes of Jeff Buckley, D’Angelo, Björk and Radiohead. Jacob produces his unmistakable low fi music in his bedroom in South London. Steadily honing his craft since 2014, where he first released an EP on Soundcloud, and has since gone on to lead to live shows around London with the Puma Blue band, toured Paris, Tokyo, Amsterdam, Seoul and Berlin and across the UK. This is all amongst independently releasing debut EP ‘Swum Baby’, two stand-alone singles on the Blue Flowers label, and a second EP ‘Blood Loss’.

Fresh off the back of a recent EP release, Safejas is a Berlin-based producer, working in the fractured seams of electronic music, producing sounds which feel both alien and familiar. Moving fluidly between the more exploratory fringes of club music and expansive ambient soundscapes (and readily exploring the space between them), Lewis's music breathes with curiosity and fractious detail. 

Before moving into production, Safejas played bass and added electronics to various bands such as Good Guy Clarence in Brighton, before also co-founding the live film scoring and audiovisual event Luma on the South coast. 

Lewis has just released an 4 piece EP called Silk, available on Bandcamp.

This week we reflect on Lewis' journey to making music - how he learnt production- plus we talk about our predictions for the future of music and genre’s in a post lockdown world.

She is a New York based, composer, arranger, producer, and violinist, and has worked, recorded and toured internationally playing violin, violawith some incredible names such as Smashing Pumpkins, Christina Perri and Tiesto. Not only that, but she has an equally impressive resume composing soundtracks for commercials, television and films, with her work featured on The Discovery Channel's The Lonely Planet Guides, and she has since gone on to work with Tilda Swinton and Aaron Eckhardt, HBO, BBC, plus recently composed the music for a beautiful VANS sneakers advert and worked with the illustrator Jo Ratcliffe for this beautiful Chanel illustration. Wow!

Oscar has played as part of London Afrobeat band Kokoroko and has worked alongside Shabaka Hutchings, Moses Boyd and Yussef Dayes. He’s also shared the stage with the likes of the wonderful Lianne La Havas and Kamasi Washington.

With an eclectic taste in music, Jelly is heavily involved in both the jazz and DIY/punk scenes in London. The Supreme Standards have claimed her to be ‘the next artist to make an impact on the London Jazz Scene’. She’s also an activist, and a strain of political dissent runs through her music.

In this episode, not only do we get a bit political (!) but we also talk about the transformative nature of music, living with your bandmates, creating safe spaces and Jelly's work with Tomorrow's Warriors, an innovative jazz music education and artist development organisation that is committed to increasing diversity across the arts through jazz, with a special focus on those from the African diaspora and girls. This week we're caught up with Slow Shudder, AKA, Amanda Mayo, a Cuban American recording artist, music producer, songwriter & DJ. Not only content as an artist, Amanda also has 10 years in the music business as a music curator, A&R, creative strategist, and has worked in academia as a lecturer. Her topics of research include "artificial intelligence within the context of musical collaboration and improvisation and the impact of virtual music scenes on identity" - so not only a one woman musical show, but also a super smart and well informed cookie! In 2020, Slow Shudder has kept busy during lockdowns by regularly playing virtual gigs hosted on Twitch and online radio stations, alongside her 5 year running radio show, Solar System (currently on datafruits.fm).

Musically her sound is versatile and encompasses many musical influences from the likes of indie electronic, dance, experimental, and alternative music, culminating in a way that’s best described as forward-thinking pop. Slow Shudder has been steadily releasing music since her debut single in 2016, ‘Call You Back' both independently and through labels such as bitbird, Palettes, Next Wave / Ultra Music, Moving Castle, and Not Like That. Alongside this she's also been featured by outlets such as Earmilk, Acid Stag, Indie Shuffle, Asymmetric Magazine, She Makes Music, Chromatic Club, BIRP.fm, and Crack in the Road. Outside of being an artist in her own right, Amanda has also just begun formally supporting and working with artists, offering creative and tangible exercise to help them in the music business as a coach.

In this episode we get a real overview of Amanda's career so far and the lessons she's learnt along the way. Join us where we discuss the trials and tribulations in a 10+ year DJ life, how she lived in a storage unit and taught herself Garage Band, to working at the then start up Audio Network, in a music licensing company, and her new found role  as a coach.

This week we’ve got a jam-packed interview with Intalekt - with the busiest person we know! Intalekt is an artist, one half of production duo Billy Dukes, a radio host on Reprezent, the founder of School of Bop, a DJ, and frankly a strong pillar in his musical community. 

As a producer, Intalekt’s music is a genre-bending mix inspired by the likes of hip hop, soul, gospel and rock, plus features heavy sampling and instrumentation, which all culminate to make his trippy sounds. Looking back at his 2015 self-produced debut EP (it is what it is) IIWII, Intalekt championed UK talent, with features by the likes of Jacob Banks, Kojey Radical, Jay Prince and Ella Frank, and similarly the release was celebrated by UK radio-royalty, Trevor Nelson, Mista Jam and DJ Target.

Keen champion of UK talent, Intalekt's ardent support of community and connecting is clear in his 2019 founding of young people's initiative School of Bop. Aimed at getting young curious creatives (13-25) into the world of music production, the workshops are free immersive sessions where Intalekt share's his experience and knowledge, brings together artist friends to support the growth of industry connections, and culminates in a showcase of amazing work of the participants.

In this week’s episode, we talk about the fluidity of genre, Intalekt's approach to work, his community work with young people, plus getting through creative blocks and whether or not he believes in writer's block.

This week we're speaking to Jodi M Burn (they/them pronouns), who is a UK based musician, educator and event organiser which a keen eye on representation and breaking down barriers.

As a musician they have played drums and bass on studio recordings with bands such as Colour Me Wednesday, Personal Best and BYENAR. They've also travelled the world playing internatonal tours in Japan, Indonesia and Europe and at festivals such as Kendal Calling and Madrid Popfest, plus have supported the likes of Propagandhi, Lemuria and Juliana Hatfield. Phew!

As an educator they have taught music privately and run group music workshops for beginners for 5 years - in quarantine they were doing zoom drum lessons! They have also volunteered as an LGBTQ+ youth worker, and worked alongside Trans-led charity Gendered Intelligence, and worked with The Proud Trust, the home of LGBT+ youth (plus other identities such as asexual, intersex and questioning).

As an organiser they have co-run First Timers Fest, organised DIY shows in London and Brighton and co-ran Synth Punk Fest at DIY Space for London for 3 years. Jodi started with Girls Rock London as a volunteer Drum Tutor and Band Coach in the 2018 and 2019 camps and has since joined the organising team to focus on programme delivery, international collaboration and trans inclusivity.

Recent musical releases played on by Jodi include the self titled debut EP by hardcore trans duo Byenary and the single 'Nannas on a Rampage' by glam-drag band Thigh High.

This week we're changing things up, and interviewing Charles Vaughan, an eclectic DJ, Broadcaster and all around music-lover! Charles is the co-creator of ‘Universal Sanctuary’, a late-night show on Worldwide FM with Tina Edwards, which explores the crossroads of jazz and DJ culture. Confident outside of the radio booth, Charles has also filled dance floors at venues such as Brixton Jamm, and Pickle Factory, plus has played the world famous Boiler Room. He also has experience running his own nights, such as Birdland Kissa, Resolution and much much more.

Whilst Charles also produces, in this episode we focus mostly on his DJ life and discuss the connection between the DJ and the crowd and how to build and manage energy, the idea that DJing is a continuation of jazz, plus of course Charles' LOVE of disco, jazz and TikTok!

This week we're speaking to Benji 'Chief' Appiah, one of the many artists involved in collective, Steam Down, though has also worked with artists from the UK jazz scene such as Nubya Garcia, Theon Cross and Ms Maurice. As a drummer, composer and teacher from south east London, Benji uses his drumming to express his Ghanian roots and the UK culture he grew up with. 



For the uninitiated, Steam Down is an artist collective and jam night that started off by a group of multi-instrumentalists (AKA v.talented people!) in bar in Deptford (firstly Buster Mantis, later Matchstick Piehouse) to connect and collaborate, before quickly growing into one of the most in-demand parties on the UK jazz scene.

With a family vibe, the 8 piece band & rotating number of guests, have supported projects such as Sampa The Great on Jools Holland, headlined a Boiler Room Festival, and have played the likes of Glastonbury, Maiden Voyage, Gilles Peterson’s We Out Here Festival, Love Supreme and Jazz Al Parque in Colombia. If that's not enough, Steam Down have won awards such as the Innovation Award and Live Experience of the Year Award featuring Kamasi Washington at the Jazz FM Awards 2019.

In this week’s episode, we’ll be speaking to Benji about work ethic in the music industry, how important it is to stay true to yourself as an artist, and meeting Thudercat on his birthday!

This week we're changing it up, and moving from the medium of music to poetry by speaking to lyds, a Black woman poet and writer. Based in Epsom, UK, her writing practice predicates on delineating the human condition through the prisms of Black womanhood, music, the erotic, spirituality & radical tenderness. In this episode we get into the creative process of crafting poetry and see where the words stop and the music begins.

lyds co-facilitates PRISM WRITERS; a writer’s group for Black women held at the Southbank Centre and has an MA in Black British Writing from Goldsmiths, University of London. She has also had her writing published by the likes of AFROPUNK, Syla Studio, Lungs Project, Kandaka, sweet-thang zine, Lacuna Lit, Guts Publishing and Call + Response Journal. To add to the list, she is currently a writer-in-residence on DIALOGUES.
