With 100K followers on Facebook and 60K on TikTok, Sochenda has inspired a generation of young Cambodians to take environmental action in their personal lives. When I asked Cambodian youth who is their environmental role model, many (if not all) mentioned Sochenda and her media ZEROW!

ZEROW started as a way for Sochenda to explore and document all her zero waste actions, from bringing a pot to the market to buy a chicken to discovering Indigenous knowledge or testing all the low-carbon mobility options.

She gives us precious tips on how to grow an audience organically, her lessons learned along the way and all the other activities she's exploring, from in-person workshops and training to starting a zero waste refill station!

💡 Coming from a difficult background, he studied hard to get a scholarship for Australia, where he was exposed to so many new ideas, opportunities and people that made him more creative, entrepreneurial and driven to make a change in Laos.

🤔 Throughout his studies, there was this one question that Jim kept thinking about: how can the youth in Laos also be exposed to these opportunities and be empowered to become problem solvers? 

💻 He came back to Laos and started collaborating with schools to conduct the first entrepreneurship bootcamps, data science programs and technology trainings with Xiang Miang.

⚒️ This led him to launch Makerbox for the youth to have their own space to connect, build things with their hands, and learn about topics never heard of in Laos before. It’s a space built by makers, for makers and aspiring makers, for those who want to paint, build their own electric bicycles, discover the Internet of Things, play board games, or just have meaningful conversations!

💪 After she refused an extremely high-paying job at Wall Street, she came back to Vietnam to launch ALIGO Kids, a platform that has taught key life skills and child sexual abuse prevention through educational cartoons for 70,000 children and families.

👵 Working with so many families, she also realized that while children have so many opportunities and are constantly exposed to new technologies, the elderly are left behind.

🤳 Thuy Anh and her team then distributed smartphones and conducted digital literacy workshops for thousands of elderly, and it quickly evolved to become HASU, an app helping the elderly to take care of their mental health, physical health and social relationships, that has been used by 12,000 people to date.

🥰 She shares how she has identified the issues she cares about and how it has evolved over the years, which translated into her co-founding 4 different social enterprises: ALIGO Kids, HASU, and also ALIGO Media and Memory Love Book that you will discover in this episode.

💪 They started supporting street kids in 2002 to lift them out of poverty and send them back to school. When they realized that street kids were a vulnerable target for human trafficking, they embarked on a journey to fight trafficking and rescue trafficked people. 

😍 Since 2002, Blue Dragon has rescued 1,049 people from trafficking, sent 5,739 kids back to school & training, placed 359 teens in jobs, served 621,193 meals, built 210 homes for families, obtained legal papers for 13,518 people… and much more!

👏 Michael shares how his childhood shaped his willingness to help other people, how he started this 20-year journey by teaching English to street kids in Hanoi with a group of volunteers and how Blue Dragon evolved over the years with more than 100 staff dedicated to making the lives of street kids better.

Last time, I was helping a group of kids, they have a dancing crew and they just asked me if I could help them make a video, and I said yes! I don't know why, because I think I saw myself in them, struggling before, and I wanted to be the person that I dreamed to meet back then, someone who can help me. And also because this person I dreamed to meet, I also met! When I was younger, when I was learning, I always had a teacher or I always had someone who came and who gave me a big gift, you know, so, so big, I was so embarrassed... how to say thank you? And they just told me that it doesn't matter, just enjoy and just pursue your career”.

🎤 “In my province, people are just busy surviving every day. Our life is just to survive… and another typhoon will come in the next few months… and survive again. It's difficult. Climate is not a joke. Our main industry is agriculture, which is disturbed by the unforeseen climate patterns. In our province, we don't have other jobs, we don't have manufacturing, and tourism is also affected by climate change. It's a personal commitment for my second life.”

💪 Her story is a great example of youth empowerment. She managed to connect with her inner power of action after a long journey volunteering, studying abroad, receiving trust and accepting responsibilities at work, setting self-discipline rules and inspiring other youth. She shares her passion for the environment, climate, life sciences and, most importantly, for badminton and French fries!

🎤 ”We have a team of 30 volunteers. I'm the youngest and didn’t have any relevant experience but I need to coordinate everyone. Fortunately, my boss gave me a lot of space and believed in me a lot. I was so stressed, but my supervisor was like: “you can do it! And just do it because you can do it!”. So I was able to tell myself that, it’s okay, I have the ability to do it and it's not restricted by my age or my experience… and everything went pretty well!”

She founded Rochun: Pay It Forward which aims to empower youth from grassroots India through education to realize their full potential. 

📚💻 She has built 11 libraries, mentored hundreds of young people, implemented digital literacy programs and brought many international opportunities to her home State. 

She shares with us her childhood during which she questioned everything, how she excelled at school and got a life-changing scholarship to study in Bangladesh, and why she took the path of social entrepreneurship.

💪 Shaan is a gender, climate and youth empowerment advocate. We discuss about her life-changing experience with Teach For India, where she discovers the education crisis in her country by teaching in low-income communities. We discuss about her transition being a model to live her childhood dream and inspire others with her climate advocacy. 

She walks us through how she became Miss Earth India 2017 and her following journey exploring climate action, social entrepreneurship and now gender equality. Koyo sees her life as a succession of experiments, where each experiment is a learning opportunity to improve the next one. Koyo has worked in a video game agency, designed a children’s book for the UN, trained herself to be a Montessori teacher, has been a freelance designer and is now working on her own projects. And that’s through this iteration process that Koyo came back to what made her happy as a kid: creating stories!

🎤 “I felt like I really need to step up, take action, go out there and tell people that: look, I lost my mom four days ago because of this, so please take these things seriously so that you don't lose the people you love. So that's pretty much when it started and ever since I continued my WASH activism”.

💪 In today’s episode, you will be meeting Shomy, a Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) activist from Bangladesh and co-founder of Awareness360, a youth-led organisation which aims to empower youth across the world to do community service. Shomy shares why she decided to dedicate her time and energy to ensure that no one dies from diarrhoea.

We discuss how Awareness360 started in a burger joint and now has 1500 volunteers in 20+ countries. We discuss what are important milestones in her life that shaped who she is today and finally, she shares with us her love for Bangladesh and how she wants everyone to know about this amazing country!

Shomy has received many recognitions for her social work of over a decade, notably the President’s Volunteer Service Award (Gold) in 2012 from President Barack Obama for her outstanding contribution to community service. She has also brought pride for her nation by becoming the first and only Bangladeshi to have been awarded with the 2019 Princess Diana Legacy Award for her humanitarian work continuing Princess Diana’s legacy.
