What A Flop! The Color Purple Box Office Disaster

What should have been an easy blockbuster hit has turned into one of the saddest box office cases of 2023. "The Color Purple" made $18.1 Million on its Christmas Day opening, but it's projected to lose between $80 million and $100 million, and to make matters worse the industry isn't taking the "Oscar bait." What happened? Why did a movie with a seal of approval from Stephen Spielberg and Oprah Winfrey tank so quickly? Hopefully, this is a lesson learned for big studios: Stop spending four-quadrant money on one-quadrant movies.

Godzilla Minus One - Film Review

I don't know if it's because it's an international film and we (Americans) are considered a foreign market or if Japanese studios think Americans won't enjoy it, but the noise surrounding this movie is too quiet and it's not getting the marketing it deserves. It's excellent! By far, it's the best Godzilla movie I've seen.

The Marvels - Film Review

"The Marvels" is fun trash. It's entertaining, goofy, and the opposite of serious, but it's well below normal Marvel expectations. With a weak story, weak plot, and a forgettable villain this movie serves to fill the gaps rather than stand on its own. Brie Larson's Carol Danvers is supposed to be the draw, but newcomer Iman Vellani's performance saves this film from being a flat, heartless mess.

Marvel's Flop Era - Captain Marvel

Happy "The Marvels" Week...or not. This seems to be the most anticipated movie of the year with presales trailing behind box office bombs such as "The Flash" and "Black Adam." Yes, the SAG Strike is still happening, but Marvel should be able to see itself. The fanfare should produce enough word of mouth to guarantee a slam dunk, but this might be a cinematic airball. Before stepping into new adventures with Carol Danvers, Kamala Kahn, and Monica Rambeau, let's see what went well with "Captain Marvel" and what could go wrong here.

The MacGuffin - Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho

I can recall the first time I watched a Hitchcock film (Vertigo in 2004) and I remember the second Hitchcock film I watched (Frenzy in 2006), but I don’t remember the first time I saw Psycho. I got my first Netflix account in 2010 and I know this movie was in my DVD queue, but I’m almost positive I saw it sometime before then.

I’m often asked about my favorite movies and this classic is definitely in the top 5. I can watch this over and over and never get bored, and at this point, I’m sure I can recite it word for word from memory. While it’s well-acted and beautifully shot with great sound mixing and film editing, I love the structure. I love how this story starts one way and then shifts into something else, how we’re following Marion on an ill-conceived journey only to be abandoned halfway through. Psycho is as beautiful as it is disturbing, but it’s timeless and one of my absolute favorites.

The Secret to Horror: Candyman

What’s the secret to good horror movies: character development. Create three-dimensional characters and give your audience time and space to bond with them so the audience has reason to care when things happen to them. Nia DaCosta fails in this aspect. Instead of pushing us to bond with the main character she tries to force us to feel something for the film’s central social issue. It’s visually stunning but thematically loose, but more importantly…it’s not scary.

Exploring Sci-Fi: Dune
