North from the Otways, one enters areas known for Yowie sightings, such as Colac. As the journey continues northwards, areas beyond Rokewood becomes more mountainous, and reports of Yowie sightings tend to increase.

These areas have gained a reputation for being known for spasmodic Yowie activity.

While this is an excellent report, we apologise for the audio quality—it was the best we could do at the time of recording.

Descriptions of the Yowie often mention hair measuring seven to eight inches under the arms, reminiscent of an orangutan. This feature, along with a height of around eight feet and a heavily muscled build, resembling primate, yet exhibiting some human-like facial characteristics, are commonly reported in Yowie sightings across Australia.

These attributes are consistent from the far north, to the very southern tip of the country, demonstrating that no corner of Australia is entirely free from Yowie encounters.

The initial sighting involved a female passenger who spotted a Yowie in a field. She urged the driver to turn back so they could get a better look, but he refused, and the opportunity to observe the creature was lost. The encounter was particularly notable for its description: the Yowie was likened to an Orangutan, standing motionless like a statue and making eye contact as the vehicle sped past.

Second Yowie Report

The second sighting, also at Woolooga, took place six years after the first. This time, the Yowie was not stationary but instead was seen running and obliged to cross the road as the vehicle approached. This report highlights a stark contrast in behaviour compared to the initial encounter.

Location Description and Advice

The site of these sightings consists mainly of farm fields with sparse tree cover. Surrounding these fields are mountains with dense forests, high peaks and deep valleys, all part of the Great Dividing Range (GDR). This vast corridor of forest stretches along the entire eastern side of Australia, providing ample habitat for wildlife, including reported Yowie activity.

One memorable situation involved a rural house where the owner had an opportunity for “Bigfoot bartering”. Instead of engaging, the owner installed sensor lights. For rural properties experiencing regular Yowie visits and disturbances, installing sensor lights and trail cameras is recommended as an effective way to reduce unwanted encounters.

On a remote mountain peak in New South Wales, a couple parked their car late at night, believing they had found complete solitude. The location, atop Mt. Kembla, seemed perfect for privacy and passion.

In the darkness of the forest, surrounded by towering trees and the vast, quiet expanse, the couple made love, feeling secure in their isolation.

Suddenly, as they were still together, a pair of glowing red eyes appeared from the shadows, watching them from the trees.

With panic setting in, the male witness rushed to the front seat, not stopping to dress, and drove naked all the way back to town, desperate to escape whatever had been watching them.

Background

The witness has lived on a 60-acre property in Deepwater, Queensland, residing off the grid in a small cabin for the past 12 years. Over this period, unusual occurrences have been ongoing, although it is only recently that the witness has started to connect the events. These include broken branches, logs moved across tracks, stick structures around the perimeter, and branches pulled down to block paths. The witness finds no reasonable explanation for these activities. Dead trees have been picked up and arranged against others in teepee-like formations, with clear signs of the trees being dragged from their bases.

Recent Encounter

A few days prior to the report, the witness’s dog began barking in a manner similar to an intruder alert, accompanied by other unusual noises. Peering outside through the sparse trees, the witness observed a group of black figures moving through the bush approximately 60 metres away. Initially, the witness assumed it was a group of people, numbering about eight to ten. However, upon closer observation, it became clear that the figures were much too large and moving far too quickly to be human. Each figure was upright and at least eight feet tall, running swiftly and silently through the bush. The lighting conditions at the time allowed the witness to see the figures clearly, with daylight streaming through the trees.

The area is isolated, and at the time, there was no one else nearby. Despite their size and speed, the black figures did not make any noise themselves. However, prior to their appearance, a significant amount of noise was heard from the top corner of the property, including the barking of other dogs. The figures moved from north to south across the property.

The witness was initially confused, questioning why people would be on the property, but soon realised they were not human.

Neighbourhood Accounts

The witness spoke with a neighbour who reported that a nearby woman has also experienced similar visits. She has seen these creatures on her property and is actively attempting to photograph them, having installed cameras to capture evidence of their presence.

In August 2009, Faye Burke and Alana Garnett were driving along the isolated Nowendoc Road at 7:30 PM. As they approached Connelly’s Creek Gap, near Mount George, they found themselves in a region west of Taree and east of the Barrington Tops.

This area, located within the Great Dividing Range (GDR), is widely recognized for an abundance of Yowie sightings. Nowendoc Road itself parallels an expansive mountain range.

Geographically, Mount George is situated between Coffs Harbour to the north and Newcastle to the south, placing it squarely in a region that has been central to numerous Yowie sightings over the years. As such, this encounter is unlikely to be the last of its kind in the area.

We continue with another truck driver who made the fateful decision to stop on the Newell at night.

The driver still has a sick physical reaction when recalling the incident, describing it as more traumatic than any time he had spent in jail. He explains his encounter with a Yowie, that struck the vehicle so forcefully, it rocked his fully loaded 44-ton truck—a detail reminiscent of the 2019 Witheren (Qld), report.

At this secluded site, the witnesses felt the presence of something unusual. According to their account, the nights felt particularly tense. The Yowie was seen on the side of the river, leaning over and cupping its hand to drink the water.

Humans rarely run through dense thickets of thorns, leaving behind clumps of hair, nor do they possess the stamina to charge up mountains, outpacing three young athletes. The creature in question did not match the description of any known person: standing nearly 7 feet tall, weighing around 130 kg, covered with thick, matted hair up to three inches long, and possessing deep-set eye sockets.

The name "Chewbacca" is frequently used to describe the general appearance of a Yowie. Witnesses often refer to "Orangutan" when describing the color and look of the Yowie’s hair. While there are black and white Yowies reported, the most common hair color described is a reddish brown. Interview 1: Middle Brother Sighting (1973)

The first story comes from a mountainous area within the Great Dividing Range, just below Port Macquarie. The setting is familiar—surrounded by notable Yowie sighting locations such as Wauchope to the north, Taree to the south, and Diamond Head along the coast.

As we zoom out on the map, more and more reports emerge from the region.

This particular incident occurred during a school excursion in 1973. Decades later, the experience continues to resonate with the witness, reminiscent of the well-known Bill O’Chee school excursion sighting in Springbrook, Gold Coast Hinterland, in 1977.

Yowie Sightings in the Royal National Park

There are a handful of locations that stand out above the rest when it comes to repeated Yowie sightings. These are the areas south, west, and north of Sydney, the Gold and Sunshine Coasts, and the alpine regions stretching from south of Canberra into Victoria’s central highlands.

Now we take you to the Royal National Park, just south of Sydney.

This expansive landscape of rugged mountains flows down toward other notorious areas, such as Mount Kembla and Mount Keira.

First Sighting: West Arm Encounter

The first comes from a man in a boat, travelling at night up the West Arm, an inland estuary, to collect fresh water from the falls. Under bright moonlight, he was confronted by a towering, hairy figure, standing motionless on a rock ledge above him at the water’s edge.

Second Sighting: Grays Point

The next sighting comes from the outer fringe of the park, at a place called Grays Point. What this witness saw was sudden, powerful, and deeply unsettling.

Third Sighting: Woronora Dam

In July of 1987, one of the most dramatic Yowie incidents occurred at Woronora Dam, on the park’s northern edge—a case that made national news.

A group of eight young men reported seeing a massive Yowie, standing well over two metres tall, carrying the carcass of an animal. The creature let out a fierce growl before retreating into the scrub.

Shaken and rattled, the boys drove straight to the Engadine Police Station and filed an official report.

Introduction

Danbulla State Forest forms part of the mountainous Great Dividing Range, which runs west of Cairns.

This is the same range that borders Red Hill, Cairns—the site of our last report, where a witness encountered a small Yowie with an expression shifted to anger; it clenched its fists, shouted, and charged the witness, pushing her in the back and over an embankment.

Lake Tinaroo and the Atherton Tablelands

At the southern edge of Danbulla State Forest lies Lake Tinaroo, located in the Atherton Tablelands and constructed in 1953. The nearby township is home to only 300 residents—a small population on the fringe of a vast mountain range.

The physical characteristics of the Red Hill encounter closely match those of the Lake Tinaroo sighting. Both creatures were powerfully built, stood around 5 feet tall, and were seen within five years of each other. The coloration of height, colour and muscular build are very similar.

The sighting was in the same mountain range as the Red Hill incident, only five years apart.

Could this range be home to a lineage of Jingera—the small species of Yowie?

Following the story of the angry little orange creature in Jarrahdale, Western Australia, which we featured in our last podcast, let's take a journey to the east coast. This time, we arrive in Cairns, specifically an outer suburb called Red Hill. Years ago, Red Hill was part of an expansive never ending mountain range bypassing the west of Cairns.

Our witness was enjoying a casual walk up Red Hill, which, in 1990, remained largely undeveloped to the west. To the east, a school sat at the base of the hill. The walking trails that wound up and down Red Hill were popular with locals—walkers, hikers, and joggers frequented them daily. It seemed an ideal spot for anyone, including women looking to improve their fitness, to safely exercise.

Journey to the Opal Mines

A Yowie witness accepted a close friend's invitation to travel to the far west of New South Wales to work in an opal mine. This remote experience was intended to provide solitude, aligning with a new spiritual journey.

Unexpected Yowie Sightings

Yowies have a reputation for appearing in the most unlikely places. This episode offers another compelling example. Despite the region's arid environment—characterised by red earth, hard clay, and rocks rich in lead, zinc, and copper—Yowie sightings have been reported from locations such as Broken Hill, Tiboo’burra, Wan’aaring, Bourke, and even as far as Wilcannia, where footprints have been discovered.

A Surprising Encounter

After many years listening to Yowie encounters, I believed I had heard it all, but occasionally a story surfaces that defies expectations. In this case, our witness forgot to extinguish his campfire before going to bed. Remarkably, a Yowie arrived and put out the fire by urinating on it. Shortly after, strong winds swept through—winds that could easily have spread the flames. The question remains: did the Yowie sense the risk?

Yowies and Fire

Yowie interactions with fire are rare. Notable incidents include a sighting in Glenfield, NSW, where a Yowie sat beside a fire built by children, stretching its arms out to warm its hands. Another well-known figure is the Yowie called "Old Fire Hands" at Woy Woy.

Just when we think we’ve heard every possible report, a new encounter emerges to challenge our assumptions. By now, it should be clear: with Yowies, we must always expect the unexpected.

Description of the Creature

The encounter occurred at a close distance of about five metres. Eric described the creature as standing at least 5’10” tall, walking on two legs, and possessing a snout that resembled those of a bear or a baboon. Its body appeared human-like, yet was completely covered in long, dark brown or black hair.

Behavior and Escape

Upon noticing Eric, the creature emitted a loud hissing noise, then turned swiftly and ran away. In its retreat, it dropped to all fours, increasing its speed as it disappeared into the forest.

Additional Eyewitness Account

The fearsome nature of the creature left a strong impression on Eric. Later, he learned that a property owner in the same area had also reported seeing this mysterious Yowie.

Yowie Sightings in the Dandenong Ranges

Although the Dandenong Ranges might be considered a prime area for Yowie activity, actual sightings have been rare. Nevertheless, there have been a few notable encounters, including one particularly interesting report from Emerald, located on the outskirts of the Dandenongs.

This account involves a local pastor who, after taking a fern from a gully at night, encountered a Yowie that appeared to be displeased by the pastor’s actions.

Additional Yowie Report from Malanda

In this podcast, two separate Yowie encounters are discussed. The second report originates from Malanda, a region near the Atherton Tablelands southwest of Cairns, which is recognized for frequent Yowie sightings.

In this podcast segment, we revisit the video compilation featuring various encounters at Wee Jasper, New South Wales.

Throughout the video, I included a series of brief audio recordings in which multiple witnesses recounted their experiences with the Yowie. During my research in the area for the video, I too had an unexpected encounter with a Yowie, at the very same location.

The Setting and Context

All of these encounters, including my own, occurred at identical locations in Wee Jasper and span several decades. The region is renowned for its extensive network of caves and tunnels winding through the mountains.

Many of these passages run deep beneath the earth, and it is likely that undiscovered caves still exist. It is reasonable to consider that Yowie clans may inhabit some of these unexplored spaces.

Witness Reports and Yowie Behavior

Since the video aired, there have been numerous requests to include a complete version of one particular witness report in this podcast series. Here, we present Brett Young’s account of a remarkable encounter he and his friends experienced.

Their story begins with a flat tyre, prompting them to walk back to camp just after dusk. The behavior they observed—being followed and stalked—aligns closely with what is often described as typical Yowie conduct.

Introduction

Wentworth Falls lies at the heart of the Blue Mountains, west of Sydney, perched above the sweeping Jamison Valley, adjacent to the Megalong Valley. Both valleys have a long history of reported Yowie encounters that span many years.

Concentration of Sightings in Nearby Towns

On the upper slopes to the east of Wentworth Falls are the townships of Lawson, Hazelbrook, and Woodford. These towns record the highest concentration of Yowie sightings, likely due to their larger populations providing more opportunities for encounters and reports.

Personal Experience in Hazelbrook

Hazelbrook stands out as the place where I spent the most time with one particular Yowie, from whom I learned a great deal. This Yowie was the only friendly one I’ve ever interacted with; most encounters have been far less amiable.

Kings Tablelands Road Incident

In early 2003, we were contacted by a young man who had a close encounter with not one, but three Yowies late at night on Kings Tablelands Road in Wentworth Falls. This location, situated on the edge of an escarpment with cliffs nearly 200 metres high, has a notable history of sightings.

Features of Kings Tablelands Road

As you travel further along Kings Tablelands Road, the landscape becomes barren. The last building you see is an old, abandoned mental hospital. From there, the road turns to sandy dirt, with no houses in sight, growing ever more isolated as it ventures deeper into the forest. The surrounding wilderness is a vast network of creeks and valleys that seemingly never end.

Solitude and Historical Connections

It is a place where someone could live for years without seeing another human, should they choose such isolation. This area is also linked to countless historic Yowie sightings.

During the 1970s, reports of Yowie sightings experienced a resurgence in the Australian media. Such coverage typically required two essential elements: first, a sighting report that caught enough attention to reach a newspaper, and second, a journalist with both an interest in the topic and the desire to write about it.

One such journalist was Gary Buchanan from the Northern Star newspaper, serving the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales. Buchanan documented several notable Yowie encounters, including one of the most famous incidents of that era. While he covered an early sighting from 1935 in South Lismore, it was two reports from Woodenbong during the 1970s that captured national attention.

Thelma Crewe’s Encounter

In 1976, Mrs. Thelma Crewe found herself unable to sleep and stood by her kitchen window at 1 a.m. Although there had been reports in previous weeks of two Yowies roaming near her home, this was not on her mind at the time. As she looked out on the moonlit scene, she observed two Yowies, each about five feet tall, standing in a vacant lot beside her house.

She insisted there could be no mistake, as the area was well-lit and the figures were close enough to distinguish clearly. The creatures’ heads appeared to sink into their shoulders, and they moved bipedally. Their arm hair was notably long—about six inches—longer than the hair elsewhere on their bodies, which reminded her of an orangutan. She also noted their resemblance to the description given by George Grey, who was reportedly attacked by a small Yowie in 1965, west of Kempsey. Thelma provided AYR with sketches of the creatures she saw.

Jean Maloney’s Sighting

Less than a year later, another sighting took place on Lindsay Street, just a few streets away. Jean Maloney was awakened at 2:30 a.m. by the distressed yelping of her Australian Terrier in the backyard. Yowie encounters seldom end well for dogs; many animals react with fear, and those that confront the creatures often return with serious injuries or go missing altogether. In this case, the dog died from its injuries.

Like many earlier witnesses, Jean has since passed away. Fortunately, her experience was documented and not lost to history.

The Alpine Region: A Remote Yowie Habitat

The Alpine region of Victoria stands as a vast, rugged terrain, largely unrepresented and sparsely populated. With fewer people inhabiting the area, there are naturally fewer opportunities for Yowie encounters, yet this does not mean there are fewer Yowies. In fact, it is possible that more Yowies inhabit the Victorian high country than the Blue Mountains, simply going unseen due to the lack of human presence. The region is even more expansive than the Blue Mountains and Wollemi National Park west of Sydney, but with far fewer residents.

Yowie Sightings and Behaviour

Episodes have been recorded of past aggressive Yowie encounters, including incidents where humans were physically attacked while sleeping. Such reports contribute to the ongoing mystery and intrigue surrounding these creatures.

Variation in Appearance

Yowies are not always depicted as dark or brown creatures. Like the Yeti, Yowies can also be white. In some encounter reports, especially those from snowy elevations, the lighter colouration is noted. This variation in colour may be attributed to evolutionary factors associated with their environment.

Close Encounter During Field Studies

An unexpected close quarter Yowie sighting occurred during operational field studies in the mountains of the Border Ranges, New South Wales. A Paleo Anthropologist, holding degrees in both Science and Archaeology, encountered a creature whose presence defied scientific understanding.

Scientific Puzzles and Historical Timeline

The Academic stated, “Scientifically, it shouldn’t be here. According to all the agreed theories, even if it was here, it should have been 200,000 to 300,000 years ago – not in 2017.” The creature was thought to be extinct for thousands of years, yet stood beside the researcher in recent times.

Pursuit of Understanding

Disturbed by the experience, the Academic went on to earn a further degree in Paleo Archaeology, specialising in the study of Hominins, Hominids, and Evolution, aiming to better understand what was witnessed.

Instinct Over Documentation

Although equipped with two cameras and a mobile phone in his backpack, the Academic admitted that documenting the encounter was the last thing on his mind. In that moment, the instinct for self-preservation overpowered any academic reasoning.

Setting and Conditions

In the late afternoon of early September 2008, along Alpine Way at Mount Kosciuszko, light snow covered the terrain, creating a wintry atmosphere.

The Incident

While driving on the road, a mob of kangaroos suddenly burst from the bush and crossed in front of the vehicle. They appeared to be fleeing from something deeper within the trees.

The Mysterious Creature

Pursuing the kangaroos was a robust creature, standing approximately five feet tall and moving on two legs. Its appearance was neither entirely animal nor completely human, but existed somewhere in between. The creature had no apparent neck and pale, distinctive eyes. Unusually, hair was only visible from its head down to its shoulders, while the rest of its body was covered in light creamy grey skin.

Family Heritage and Cultural Warnings

Billy is an Aboriginal man whose family has a long history of experiences with the Yowie. He recounts the various names used for the Yowie and speaks of different species, ranging from the large variety to the smaller Jungadee. His grandmother, echoing a common theme in their culture, always warned him never to let the children go out alone at night. He also highlights the importance to recognize how dangerous the Yowie can be.

Billy believes that the Yowie is not entirely a creature of flesh and blood, but rather a being from another dimension.

The Wappa Dam Encounter

While camping with his family at the Wappa Dam at Yandina, Billy and his relatives encountered one of the large Yowies. The creature approached their camp and stood only eight feet away. True to the typical pattern, the family first heard a branch crack in the distance, followed by a deep silence in the forest before the Yowie appeared at the edge of their camp.

Billy described the Yowie as having a face that was half ape, half human, with grey coloration and immense proportions.

The events at Ormeau served as the catalyst for the creation of Australian Yowie Research. After a dramatic encounter in 1997, this pivotal moment marked the beginning of Dean Harrison's efforts to document, investigate and report Yowie sightings across the Country.

Ormeau has been the setting for numerous remarkable encounters. These prior events have established the area as a focal point for Yowie-related activity and research.

2017 Close Encounter

One particularly extraordinary event involved a close quarter sighting of a 9-foot-tall Yowie. The creature was observed before dawn, crossing the road in front of a stationary car. Remarkably, it carried a full-sized boar over its shoulder—a fresh kill, as blood was still dripping from the animal's nose onto the road while the Yowie strode past.

This is an area with an extensive history of Yowie sightings dating back from the 1800’s to as recent as only a few weeks prior to posting the video. We cover seven standout encounters, starting in 1847 when a Yowie was reportedly killed by Aboriginal tribesmen at the site of Burrinjuck Dam NSW, followed by an incident where a Yowie was shot at in 1885.

We then move to more recent times and quite dramatic encounters, many from the exact same location, including one event which has only just happened.

While in Canberra for Tony Healy’s 80th Birthday, I decided to head down to Wee Jasper for the night, to a location where 3 of the reports on this video were.

Alone and not fully set up at 6.50pm, after doing a piece to camera (talk to camera) in the dark, two loud cracks came from the forest behind me. Then an entire tree hit the ground, followed by a massive vocal capacity.

It was then racing towards me just in the bush line making vocals and crashing everything before it. No times to bumble about in the dark trying to find equipment – life preservation kicked in.

The motivation for this Yowie going on the offensive, was more than likely due to the boys being close to, and taking interest in a very young juvenile sitting in a tree.

The traits described in the interview are synonymous with many Yowie encounters - the smell of Sulphur, self illuminating eyes, the vocal dialect and spider like movements.

Quite often we hear from people who are fortunate (or not), to have more than one sighting, and in different locations.

Our Greek witness had never known of Yowies prior to her experiences. The initial sighting was at Curra, Queensland. At first, she believed what she was seeing was a monkey.

The actions of this particular Yowie towards the witness, are intriguing and not common.

The second occurred between Mansfield and Benalla in Victoria 4 years later. This sighting was more typical.

Also in this video, is a segue to an incident during Military Training at Tin Can Bay in 1992.

A remote rural town surrounded with mountainous peaks and valley’s is no stranger to sightings of rare anomalies.

The Yowie is of course one creature of habit living in locations, with terrain often hostile to man.

As stated in the initial narration, you may live your entire life out there never discovered, if that is your choice.

A young man searching for stray golf balls at his local Golf Club, ventured into the forest early one morning, after seeing what looked to be a trail of balls placed along a dirt track leading further into the bush.

He followed the trail, collecting the balls one by one as he went.

The event happened at 10 minutes past 10am in the morning while driving west along Beechmont Road, after delivering a truck load of supplies to a property on top of the mountain.

As the Glenn, our Witness, rounds a tight right hand bend coming down the through the hills in his 9 ton empty tipper, he views what at first he believes to be a rock falling from the right high ledge onto the road.

In attempt to avoid the rock, the brakes are applied which resulted in a full lockup, and the truck came to a skidding halt.

Then the rock stood up on two feet.

As our witness Rob, came around a steep bend in the road - out stepped a large Yowie from right to left and crossed the road in front of his truck.

Rob holds trophies as an Australian Champion Bodybuilder, yet he says the body mass of this being, dwarfed him.

Rob adds, THIS was definitely no soldier is a ghillie suit. It was nearly 10ft tall.

It is described to be only 5ft tall, appeared to be approximately 80 years old, not of good health, mono brow, scabby and spotty skin, covered in two to three inch orange and grey hair over the body and longer on the head and face, strong and thick legs-thighs-ankles yet skinny and sickly from the waist up with bones protruding.

Although the appearance was described as “something very old and on its death bed”, when it ran, the speed and agility was unmatched and that of no Human.

And according to Cherie, she made a friend who taught her a lot about the forest. How to dig for bugs, climb trees and have fun. She didn't see him as anyone different. He was just hairy, that's all. And his parents were never too far away, watching.

Our Witness wanted to share his story with us – he is terminally ill at the time of the interview. He felt some of his experiences may be of use to us, and others, and didn’t want to die with the information he could offer. We thank him for that.

This story has all the common traits of wood knocking, rock throwing and being flanked, but the nature of this particular Yowie is curious.

THIS was the Yowie, responsible for the creation of the AYR, after confronting Dean Harrison one night in July of 1997.

His terror continued for years later – until – he was finally gone. We used our contacts in the SAS to stakeout the area. That Report can be read in our Dtatbase.

The Encounter

This account represents one of the two oldest known Yowie sightings, captured directly from the witness’s own words. The event took place in the 1930s.

Documenting the Testimony

In 1998 or 1999, the witness, at 76 years of age, approached us with the wish to have his encounter documented before his passing. Shortly after sharing his story, he sadly passed away.

A Lasting Record

We were honored to document his story, preserving this invaluable testimony for future generations.

They were being extremely stealth when they came across a Yowie that reacted to the boys in a menacing manner. They dubbed him ‘Ol Yellow’.

He came to us in 1998/9, wanting to Document his Encounter before he died. He was 76 years of age at the time. The encounter was in the 1930's.

Shortly after Clyde relayed his Encounter to us, sadly, he passed away.

It turned out to be a bigger night than Arthur anticipated. Soon after, Arthur wrote an article called “The Night of the Yowie’, based on the dramatic encounters he had beside Dean in Hazelbrook.

It was a night he would never forget.
