He does all things sound, and for the past decade and a half, he’s done them with David Lynch, as the operator of Lynch’s Asymmetrical Studios. From the streets of LA in Inland Empire to the depths of the Black Lodge in Twin Peaks: The Return, Dean’s been responsible for immersing you in the Lynchian world. His work on Twin Peaks: The Return earned him two Emmy nominations. This sound design work on The Return was released as its own album on 2017’s Anthology Resource Volume I on Sacred Bones Records. Since then, Dean’s also released Anthology Resource Volume II: Philosophy of Beyond, a sonic foray into ideas beyond physical reality.

Dean hopped on the call with us here at the Ion Pack, and we talked about working with Lynch, the role of sound in general, and the sublime. We discuss four tracks, reverse engineering, shadow recording, plugging things in, Lynch’s recording process, Trent Reznor, interpreting the Twin Peaks script, Walter Hill, Angelo Badalamenti, and MORE. Josh Harris is an early Internet pioneer, artist, and prophet of the singularity that the social media age brought on. He is also the subject of Ondi Timoner’s incredible 2009 documentary We Live In Public. Josh’s story is a wild and bombastic one, and you absolutely have to see the documentary to understand the scale of it.

Josh Harris made large scale art projects in the late 90s and early 2000s predicting the mindset of the social media era. First, he had Quiet, a piece where he outfitted a downtown NYC building as a capsule hotel where strangers lived together, with everything they did- from sleeping to using the bathroom to bathing- was filmed and broadcast. Then, in 2000, he created We Live In Public, a piece where he outfitted his entire apartment down to the bathrooms with cameras and live-streamed his entire life to the Internet. Josh’s career also included being a tech multi-millionaire pioneering and predicting the way we use the Internet with his company Pseudo, and throwing legendary parties in downtown NYC. Needless to say, everything Josh has done has accurately predicted how we live in the near future, and how our lives continue to merge with the Internet.

We wanted a glimpse into our future now, but Josh has long since been laying low. We were finally able to track Josh down and tried to get to the bottom of it. We spend over 3.5 hours talking about his history of an artist, the future we all face, Chuck Schumer, Muhammad Ali, Rudy Giuliani, Ethiopia, the hive, how he got on ‘the List’, his alter ego Luvvy, how 9/11 ruined his life, how he ran ‘the dress rehearsal for the cage we’re now all walking into”, his prediction for 2024, and much, much more. And we really mean much, much more.
