TED HUGHES was an English poet, translator, playwright, and children's author, best known, possibly, as being the husband of Sylvia Plath at the time of her death. Often writing with deep natural symbolism, Hughes's life was inextricably linked with Plath's legacy for the 30+ years he lived on after her. His career was managed by his sister, Olwyn Hughes, and he maintained primary control over Plath's estate, publishing rights, and legacy. Hughes was named Poet Laureate of Britain in 1984 and held the office until his death in 1998.

SUMMARY
Alex is a teenage ne'er-do-well living at some point in the not-defined future of London. He and his marauding band of goons commit various crimes (murder, rape) until Alex is caught and sent through a re-education camp. His moral salvation depends on if you read the book or watch the movie.

SUMMARY
Poverty-stricken flowerseller, Eliza Doolittle, is the subject of a bet between Henry Higgins and his friend, Colonial Pickering. Higgins, an elocution teacher, bets Pickering he can turn Doolittle into a "lady." He teaches Doolittle the finer points of manners and speaking, with heaps of gaslighting and abuse. In the end, Eliza marries the love of her life, Freddie, and with the help of Pickering, "makes something of herself."

If you’re a longtime listener, you know by now that I don’t pick the books we do every episode, the guest does. Mostly that’s so the onus of reading or rereading fresh for the recording session is on me; people normally choose books they love or have recently finished in order to not have to read 400 pages of Victorian Sadness again and again. And I admit, I have rarely said no to a book that someone chose to discuss.

But I almost said no to this one. I hadn’t read it since college, I didn’t get it, I was too uncomfortable. But I should’ve known that my guest wouldn’t lead me astray. You all are in for a phenomenal episode.

Jack Worthing, under the assumed name of Ernest, is in town to propose to Gwendolen Fairfax, the cousin of his friend Algernon Moncrieff. Gwendolen accepts but her mother, Lady Bracknell, refuses to let her marry as Jack/Ernest doesn't have the correct lineage. Algernon learns that his friend Ernest is actually named Jack, and Jack's country life secrets away a hot, young, female ward, whom Algernon decides to seduce on one of his "Bunbury" weekends– "Bunbury" being the name he gives a fictional friend whom he must visit whenever he needs to get out of town. Algernon takes on the guise of Ernest, who in the country is Jack's fictional brother that lives in town, to visit the family home. Jack's ward, Cecily, immediately decides she must marry him, this fictional Ernest whom she has heard so much about. Both men, taking on the name and disguise of Ernest, must convince their chosen spouses to marry them despite the fact that they are not the man they say they are.

American journalist in Paris, Jake Barnes, decides to take a trip with a group of friends for the Running of the Bulls in Pamplona. He is accompanied by British woman, Lady Brett Ashley, her fiancé, Mike, and Jewish businessman, Robert Cohn. The group detests Cohn for his Jewishness, but allow him to pay for their trip. Jake and Brett are seemingly in love, but cannot consummate their feelings for Jake was left with a war injury that renders him unable to have sex. Mike seems not to care that Brett is having an emotional affair with Jake and a physical affair with both Cohn and a young bullfighter. Everyone is drunk all the time, and despicable. Based on Ernest Hemingway's real vacation.

Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats is known more now as the source material for Andrew Lloyd Webber's coke-fueled nightmare of a stage show CATS and its subsequent and somehow scarier film released to cinemas in late 2019 starring an awful lot of people who should've known better. Its author, T.S. Eliot, was one of the most famous poets to emerge from the era of modernism, and carries with him many of the hallmarks of the literary movement, including but not limited to: virulent antisemitism, a fascist leaning, and really effed up relationships to women.

The story is set in Scandinavia in the 6th century. Beowulf, a hero of the Geats, comes to the aid of Hrothgar, the king of the Danes, whose mead hall in Heorot has been under attack by a monster known as Grendel. After Beowulf slays him, Grendel's mother attacks the hall and is then also defeated. Victorious, Beowulf goes home to Geatland (Götaland in modern Sweden) and becomes king of the Geats. Fifty years later, Beowulf defeats a dragon, but is mortally wounded in the battle. After his death, his attendants cremate his body and erect a tower on a headland in his memory.

Another one for our absolute pantheon of Lady Fuckbois, LADY SUSAN and the recent film adaptation called LOVE & FRIENDSHIP starring Kate Beckinsale gives us something we've always wanted: a slightly villainous lady who gets punished in proportion to her crimes.
