Desiree is a Northern California based country-folk musician with roots in the Bay Area and the ranch lands of San Benito County. Her songs have grown out of a childhood spent listening to old country cassettes and reading western novels on a cattle ranch, and matured into the heartbreaking ballads of soulful anthems that are relevant in present day Oakland.

She pays tribute to the spirit of both the Country & Folk traditions, crafting music that is as vulnerable as it is strong-willed and fierce - she sings with the raw truth of the country greats, and the emotional depth of the often forgotten folk heroes. Her songwriting is intimate and nostalgic, and her music reminiscent of all those that have existed for the sake of the song.

Pre chorus to chorus “Cause I ain’t from this side of town, i’ll stay here forever no up or down, where I belong I can’t say, so low flying Angel won’t you be on your way.” Spectacular phasing that’ll give ya them chills! such poetry!

“Mountain Lion Momma” great intro on this song! A cozy acoustic arrangement that sets the vibe and makes ya want to dance! love them verses and the whole sound of this track.

& “Gibson Blues” just to name a few of my favorites!

Lucia is a Songwriter from the West Coast. The Bay area originally, but has been living in her Mothers ancestral land of Stockholm Sweden for almost ten years now where she went to study music. She’s currently working on releasing an EP and enjoying all beauty around her so rich in history!🇸🇪

Lucia is a young folksinger living in Stockholm Sweden.

She’s part of the ever growing Scandinavian folk & Americana music scene.

Really loving Lucia’s style & sound with passionate vocals and poetic lyrics enlivened with emotion this combination makes for great songs and beautiful songwriting.

Her song “Gray” is beautifully constructed and tells a story in its vagueness. Awesome lines like “My guard was high enough, convinced me I should give it up, I left my heart out on my sleeve and that’s on me.”

Or my favorite “ I thought your Love was true, that this was nothing you could do, but as I told you bout the pain you looked away.” Wow!

“When you go by your nickname Gray”

Also her song “To Keep You Warm” such an awesome intro with snowflakes and all! For her Gems in the Rough 2021 submission video for this song! The emotion she brings to this performance is outstanding and feels so honest. Lines like “your sudden anger took me by surprise, I changed my whole life to keep you warm at night” and “Tried to keep my head down not make a sound” blown away by them vocal runs she’s doing when she sings

Jordan is a talented Poet, Artist & Songwriter from the Allegheny Mountains of Pennsylvania. Truly enjoyed hosting Jordan and having him share his poetry & music.

Jordan has had a bunch of pieces published and most recently has been working on a collection called “American Meditations” beautiful and thought provoking poems.

My favorite of the night was his poem “With God #2” in which he paints a picture of Small town, mine country living with its stories, legends & the folks you might run into on a walk around the block. So good! 🙌

He also shared some songs with us too!

“Throw Me In” is the title of the one he submitted to the 2021 Gems in the rough contest! Great song!Also loved his Uke tune “Tree Psalm” a beautiful ode to them majestic trees that we grew up climbing, swinging from & building tree forts in! Helena Rose is a Folksinger from Waynesville,

North Carolina. She’s been making music in one way or another since the age of 8 when she first picked up guitar & banjo and started pickin strings!

Says! She has “always wanted to create music folks will relate to in the most genuine & authentic way” to share who she truly is through her songs.

In 2013 she was cast and starred in a Lifetime television series called “Chasing Nashville” the show followed four ambitious teen Singers from Appalachia, and the high drama & competition they encounter like no other singing show as they and their families, lay it all on the line in pursuit of fame & fortune in Country music. Emphasis on the high drama rather than the music left the show short lived.

The experience had Helena Rose wanting to create something truly real & relatable with her music and art. After the show ended she enrolled at East Tennessee State University where she got her degree in Biology, joined an Old-Time Bluegrass County & Celtic Band called “Bill and the Belles” then hit the road!

They had many great adventures touring in the UK and all across the United States spreading their Old-Time & Country music! She left the group last year and is currently “pickin on her banjo 🪕” & working on songs for a Solo project.

Who writes beautifully written songs full of emotion & expression in a most authentic and genuine way.

She shares herself fully through what she writes and sings, not afraid of being vulnerable and expressing what she’s feeling.

First line sets the tone for the whole song and brings to life them hard talks that some of us have known and had to face. Swallowing real hard and building up the courage to say the things that need to be said. Being honest with what emotions surface from ones heart.

First line “ I need tell you something I kept bottled up inside, you should know this won’t be easy to do.” Such a great opening!

I sure have felt this. And rings true in my own life, I haven’t always been courageous enough to share with someone how I felt or was thinking. She really paints the picture of the struggle & feelings

Had such a great time hanging out with Helena Rose and getting to know her a bit through her songs.

I see such awesome things ahead for this Singer/Songwriter!

Billy Evans Is a brilliant young Folksinger from across the pond in Essex England.

Had so much fun hanging with Billy listening to him perform the songs off his new EP along with his amazing poetry. He even pulled out a few Shanties for us!

It’s been great getting to know Billy and listening through his songs. In the true spirit of folk music he sings and writes about the world around him. The struggles and injustices he witnesses and reads about. Billy has a passion for Activism he stands up for human rights,Labour rights. And is part of the political labour movement, “better working conditions for the working class” as well a an environmental activist who would love to see the Capitalist systems fall.

stating his concerns against the current regime in England and its political leaders. Opening line reads “We can not survive another five year of austerity! The government is killing me and my friends, and there’s only one solution.” Great politically charged number! “A cracking tune for sure!”

Imagine lots of folks would shed tears over the letters they wrote. and the folks reading them letters, or how often a letter was something to treasure. I’ve known Andy now for most my life, and am grateful to call him a friend. He’s an amazing Artist and super talented Writer.

I have always been blown away by his Poetry!

Andy was the first person that came to mind when I was thinking about hosting a night for folks to share and perform written works.

Andrew has been writing poetry for a couple decades now, as well as capturing the beauty of the landscapes of Maine. Especially The Island of North Haven. With many different mediums such as Oil, Watercolors, Pastels & Charcoal Andy has created some spectacular pieces of art.

Andrew has an annual Art show at the North Haven Gallery every Summer. You can find some of his art work on his Instagram page @andygelinasart also in his bio you will see a link to his published poem “Unbroken” such a great piece of writing.

Shawns a Country singer from Laramie, In the BIG Sky Country of Wyoming. He’s as Western as they come. Keeping true to tradition of Western music. He sings of heartache, longing & lessons learnt when Love goes bad. You get the sense this is one Dude who’s known the pains of what it feels like to be down and out, scorned by a lover.

The honesty in which he sings” in first person”of the depths of despair and loneliness, only the broken hearted can recognize. He paints a picture and brings back them old feelings some might be ashamed to admit.

Truly enjoying Shawn’s songs.

The breadth and realness of his songwriting is incredible. He’ll leave ya sitting alone in a smoky bar room alone, last call. Hank on the Jukebox shot of Makers in front of ya and no place to go. He takes ya that step further with the torments of someone who knows “she/he” ain’t sleeping alone tonight.

He ain’t afraid of being vulnerable with the emotions of someone destroyed by a broken heart, or a painful longing to know them reasons why things don’t work out.

The characters he creates are so familiar you can almost remember their faces. In his songs like

“Leaving Me Behind” you feel that sadness of that last goodbye or the rejection one feels after being left behind or “dumped” he’ll turn around and make ya smile with them lighter sides of romance, taking the opposite stance, more playful in his songs like “Town for Two” where he sings “well I just love you from the boredom of my heart” ain’t we all been there! Or how he writes of falling in love in

“Pictures from a Magazine” with a picture or centerfold. “ my sweetheart cut out from a magazine” Great humor! Which anyone knows is a great remedy for a cold heart.

Truly blown away by his beautiful writing and song construction, poetry set to music. Much in the way of his main influences ( Bobby D & Leonard Cohen) Alvaro’s storytelling is full of great imagery. resonance in his delivery and placement of unique lyrics , using humor and wit. He sure will paint a picture and leave ya smiling. His grimy little blues riffs will lead ya to his other influences from The Delta blues & ( Robert Johnson) to ragtime and piedmont style of ( Blind Willie McTell ) which Alvaro said he’s drawn a lot of inspiration from on his newest stuff. So many amazing blues legends and storytellers have come from Texas. From Lightnin’ Hopkins, Blind Willie Johnson , Townes Van Zandt, Guy Clark to Willie Nelson just to name a few. Gets one thinking...? What are they drinking?! Sumthin in the water? or just good livin, that brings someone the gift of song & storytelling.

Nothing better than hanging with some old friends singing the songs of the late great Townes Van Zandt! A Texas Troubadour and our hero, a true songwriting legend.

Growing up in a milling town in Central Maine we connected over his music and the characters in his songs he painted pictures of heart break, hopelessness and downtrodden folk much like the people I ran into daily in the towns along the Kennebec. With Mill shutdowns, and so many dairy farms going under. It left many folks out of work, with a dwindling economy and no new career opportunities. People always seem to turn to the booze a drugs for comfort. Watched many a friend and people I knew fall victim to sadness and drug addiction which perpetuated more sadness, and more drug addiction,poverty, hopelessness and crime.

That milling town in Central Maine really started to look and feel like the songs we heard Townes singing about. Which in someways can bring ya some comfort to know the hurts and pains of others you start to relate and empathize with their struggles.

I remember all the times sitting around campfires & along the river banks with a guitar in my hands and a friend at my side wailing into the night singing songs, making memories that will last a forever.

Townes could sure write a sad song but also so beautifully It’s through his music I learned how it’s not just what your hearing and the music of a song. Its the story and what you start to feel as the storyteller brings to life a picture with words

I’ll always cherish these friendships I’ve had for so long. The many memories and stories we share.
