We cannot change anything until we become conscious what choices are available to us. Therefore, we are bringing Toby Cowern back for a second conversation to present his 5 strategic R’s. Many worlds are affected by tragedy at some point and what I mean by worlds are the various niche cultures from family owned businesses, whom are tested over generations in shirt sleeves to shirt sleeves, to corporate executives as well as regular civilians – the intention is to have this list of 5 R’s serve as one credible action plan in various scenarios in bringing it to life. We hope this discussion both educates as well as inspires you in hope. As it can be risky to take on an enemy in any type of frontal assault , we can direct our energy to “how to create and redirect our choices” to move from victim to hero to guide. The 5 R’s offer you the power of choice. It is important to have counter narratives so we know others have gone before us in challenging times and prospered. What They Don't Tell You ... With Shirley Chock

It’s just not right how some existing businesses run, where profits are more valued than people.What if instead of ignoring and turning a blind eye to a “dog eat dog” corporate culture, we instead talked about solutions and a different business model? In this "Legacy Series" conversation, I chat with my dear friend Shirley Chock. Shirley was raised in a family business and graduated with her Bachelor's of Arts in Economics from the University of Chicago. She enjoyed a 20 year career in finance and administration, including a short work life at Goldman Sachs in Hong Kong. During this time, she also began training under Grandmaster Aiping Cheng and in 2006, became the U.S. Women’s Tai Chi National Champion. Over the course of her career, Shirley realized her Tai Chi training was instrumental in helping her manage workplace stress, conflicts as well as associates. In 2012, she was named “Working Mother Magazine’s Working Mother of the Year for Yale University”. In 2017, Shirley became the owner of Aiping Tai Chi Center, southern Connecticut’s largest Tai Chi school established in 1996 by her mentor. She is speaking today in the capacity of one who trains women around stress and conflict management. She is also a Certified Corporate Wellness Specialist. Mrs. Chock's perspective is that of a Tai Chi martial artist as it relates to redirecting force, momentum and energy. What I hope the viewers will learn is/are remedies to increase the health of any corporate culture, its employees, shareholders and all related parties so that "all" individual legacies can be defined, developed and executed.We talk about the concept of “fairness”, identifying ‘allies’, what makes a group gel together as a team compared to when a woman feels she has to prove her “worth”, recognizing the cycle of chasing other’s approval while disappearing from one’s own soul, the importance of a healthy corporate culture as an environment to grow, the realities of this world, how corporate cultures can be changed by the work force and how the element of water can be strong enough to break down walls. Shirley also speaks to how easy it can be to make up constructs in one's own mind in rationalizing excuses and scenarios, compared to growing through the pain of a toxic scenario. Seven Pillars Of Preparedness with Toby Cowern

What can we learn from a former member of the Royal Marines about crisis preparation in a 7 pillar structure or framework?Once upon a time, when the pandemic first arrived, many individuals went into panic mode & the affluent retreated to their country homes... Though alcohol & home gym equipment sales increased, people also realized how quick the landscape could change & how unprepared they were.Reactions included feelings of fear in one's awareness of the lack of survival knowledge. What can be familiar to one individual can be completely unfamiliar to the next, as each person's world are different. For each type of environment, there is a unique skill set required to succeed that is 2nd nature to that individual but not another.Toby Cowern teaches survival knowledge to prepare others on how best to plan & prepare for a crisis. He starts with both beginners as well as those with intermediate knowledge.There’s depth and nuances for each pillars, in contextual understanding, as well as knowing what’s pressure tested, in the event of a minor grid interruption. 1. Water2. Food3. Fire4. Shelter5. Signaling/Comm6. Hygiene/Medical7. Personal SafetyAs most disaster resolves itself within 3 months, you can start with 3 days or 3 weeks of the 7 pillars. As medical supplies, such as life saving insulin, can rise in price such as on the black market, this pillar is important as well as signaling/communications. Soft skills such as listening, empathy and the ability to mentor fall under pillar 5 (communications) as family members found themselves grouped together in a home for long periods of time. Or developing coping skills when no one asked for their buy-in.Toby emphasizes the focus on survival psychology in building your resilience in terms of your time and effort. Mr. Cowern believes developing your mindset is equal to acquiring the equipment. He also highlights having the will to live or something to look forward to. As we have become so familiar with comfort and convenience, its hard to perceive a different reality. Individuals are fine until or when the fear kicks in, because when that state of mind (adrenal dump) is induced, people can shut down from logical thinking. When we can de-escalate our own fears, it is easier to de-escalate other’s panic energies known as re-calibration methods. Yet, Toby points out how we are better when we can address and overcome any self-delusion to how we might act when the stress (“chemical hijacking”) does arrive.We talk about the super power of “breath work”, a default tool from trauma recovery as well as ancient knowledge we are becoming more aware of. We also discuss about hate, villains and the playbooks on populations as it relates to trend analysis. While we can buy into tribal identities, it can also come with self limitations in expanding what’s possible in a time of survival. When questioned about his beliefs, Toby pleads the “Swiss” in his silence in being able to blend with the baseline so as to not stand out. There are times when one can speak their beliefs and other times, place them on hold or be very quiet about them.Toby brings up the “false dichotomy” of if you are not this, or with this tribe, then its assumed that you are this in the polarization. He opines it is better when we focus on our own welfare, our social circle and family. He states that when we “other” others we are getting played, though we also have to realize other people will “other” us in the “good guy” syndrome. In holding fear “of you, for you or from you”, all of their actions are going to be based on that level of dehumanization. Cultural Handover with Ronnie Maina

Ronnie Maina is the Director of TBM, a family owned ICT business based out of Nairobi-Kenya; he's a next gen who has made it his mission to help steer the family business through the current succession phase.-Ronnie Maina sets the scene in the year 1967 when his father, the founder of the family business, left his agriculture village setting to move to the cosmopolitan city of Nairobi, Kenya. As Kenya has over fifty (50) tribes, Ronnie’s father had to assimilate with the city landscape as well as the newfound corporate lifestyle as an IBM executive. Ronnie states “Fear can bring out that real commitment and drive in a person in their seeking out the real challenges!” His father studied electrical engineering and was influenced by his travels as a “Big Blue” IBM Managing Director. Yet while he kept close relationships at the company, the day of business politics arrived and he was pushed out. Fortunately, he had learnt much and in 1991, Ronnie’s father commenced their family business. While in his father was in the first year of building the family enterprise, Ronnie was in his gap year after high school. He soon found himself working in the family business and negotiating his first salary figure. As his career and ndustry knowledge grew, Ronnie left to Johannesburg, South Africa. During his own IBM journey as a Managing Partner, he shares some of the internal and external conversations. The longer he stayed in the corporate setting, the more Ronnie knew he had to return home. He realized what “the family had put together for him” to grow with resources. In 2010, Ronnie was in the capital city of the DRC (Democratic Republic Of The Congo), running an ISP with 40 employees. After receiving a call from his father, Ronnie returned home to Nairobi to help run the family business. Today, he hopes to connect with other like-minded founders and next gen’s to better manage the succession process. A Good Stewardship Of All Life with Foppe Seekles

While living a life of affluence, Foppe witnessed the political winds change direction. With his experience in green investment funds and projects for Dutch banks, he decided to move forward with his own endeavors. Today, Mr. Seekles serves as an advisory board member to a non-profit foundation. Foppe feels deep emotions for the next generation who face hardships, such as resource scarcity as well as suicide. Therefore, the foundation he advises is initiating the international roll out of an exchange and barter platform based on a URA block chain currency. Mr. Seekles hopes his efforts of wisdom, love and trust can be the steward of all people as the beneficiaries around the world. He states “both the platform and Ura currency are easy to use”; he invites all people to participate, including small to medium sized businesses and especially, the next generation. Mr. Seekles knows firsthand what it is to rebuild and as such, he has sensitivity for others attempting to start over or commence a new project. Statistics indicated the past year brought changes to people of all income and age brackets. As people began to find themselves isolated or in a world of lockdown, some turned to self-destruction. “On a global scale, UNICEF forecasted 1.2 million child deaths as a result of lockdowns, not the virus itself.” If an economic collapse is unavoidable, he believes the URA can be an alternative. For his legacy, Foppe receives the satisfaction of being part of something bigger than himself in service to others. He is aligning his core values with his actions and thus, is creating his legacy in real time. Some may think defining, developing and executing one’s legacy is something that can be perfected, like art, but there is also simply showing up to do the work compared to “checking out”. When life hardships arrive, simply recording your year’s events or making goals can be an incredible feat. Even if one writes down their goals, including a succession plan or governance structure, it does not mean they will necessarily follow through.Mr. Seekles is leading with his heart, as well as his mind. A Legacy Of Passion & Style with Robyn Blaber

From royalty to billionaires, the Chateau Versailles has hosted many elegant events over the centuries. In 2011, Robyn Blaber enjoyed his first costume ball at the palace and 18th century fashion inspired him to travel back in time to explore the re-creation of the garments worn during that period! Robyn attended his first couture formal function and enjoyed the experience immensely - then, each year thereafter, he brought his closest friends. Mr. Blaber wanted more options than what the dozen costume shops in Paris offered. Thus, began his journey of discovering how he would create the 18th century fashion himself. Active artistic expression is a big deal for Robyn: “at the end of the day, you have created something – everything you take for granted had to be created by someone … some of the greatest things in life are things that someone had a passion for”. Each dress or jacket requires about 15 meters of fabric and he begins each piece with a specific friend in mind.In the past decade, Mr. Blaber realized he created products in the software industry for others who then owned the intellectual property. He had little to no control over his coding products and they became obsolete in 2-4 years. However, his 18th century fashion hobby became a passion. One might say he commenced a tangible legacy with his fashion collection of 20+ dresses, men’s jackets and other specially designed pieces.Mr. Blaber introduces the elements of men’s 18th century fashion from the jabot to the frock coat. The frock coat was the predecessor to the modern suit jacket; its fit is similar, resting on one’s shoulders, and can easily be shaken off in the event one needed to use his sword. In terms of tailoring, a dress can take 4 to 40 hours whereas a jacket can involve 100 hours.Robyn also talks about how he attended a party at the Woodrow Wilson house in Washington D.C. to celebrate the signing of the Versailles treaty. He was met with respect as tailors are a rare profession today! From keeping the fabric in place to knowing what is historically accurate, Mr. Blaber demonstrates how to get dressed for an 18th century ball in less than five minutes. The greatest joy he finds is having a close friend premiere his latest fashion piece. He is living his value around making emotional connections by sharing his tailoring skills so others can be transformed by his art. Robyn describes how a few transformations occur in the each stage of the process: selecting the materials, the colors, the embroidery and the final moments when the piece is presented, tried on and worn.Robyn speaks about the gift and the artist’s curse of “I could have done that better!” reflecting the pride and imagination of what’s possible. His drive pushes his ideas forward though he realizes nothing is created in a vacuum. For Mr. Blaber, the fun starts at the beginning with the combination of design and the partnership of co-creation amongst friends.He states “you are given one life … participate in that life in creating, contributing, involving people… you need to be a part of this world.” Robyn opines how bucket lists, to him, means not giving up before you even get started; he suggests planning to do something new at least three times in your life, or change each summer by making the space for new experiences. Mr. Blaber ends this video highlighting his latest men’s jacket, a piece of over 850,000 stitches, and a statement that his only regret is not starting 18th century fashion sooner. At IBM, Bryan worked with researchers on a First-of-its-Kind Healthcare product offering. The product offering was designed to streamline claim processing for providers, allowing processing to occur in real time. As a Hewlett Packard Enterprise product manager, he brought new cyber-security products to market. Herein, we talk about travel compared to capital gains in the traditional definition of legacy as only property and financial assets. I wanted to expand the meaning and interpretation of the word, legacy, as our personal legacy is more than the work we do and those we serve - it is also about appreciating the surprises of life and its full experiences. As the three emotions I hope my clients feel are freedom, fulfillment and satisfaction, a part of that comes about through travel and new experiences beyond being productive and a contributing member of society!After two medical scares, Randall focused on happiness and the qualitative aspects of his legacy in the example he sets for others and in how he enjoys his life.
