Glasladies Beer Society

The Glasladies Beer Society is on a mission to connect beer-loving women (and non-binary folk) in Glasgow and this year they’re turning FIVE. But they don’t just organise regular meetups, they have an annual beer festival too! The Beer is for Everyone festival is happening on 16 November in Glasgow with a focus on inclusivity, from accessibility to allowing kids and dogs. It’s a celebration of Scottish craft beer and culture for the whole family. Part of the proceeds will be going to two worthy charities: Scottish Action for Mental Health (SAMH) and The Women’s Centre Glasgow.

Listen as Nix and Kristin talk through some of the Glasladies’ history, how they moved from a meetup to festival organisers and what they’re looking forward to at this year's festival. Get your tickets below, it promises to be amazing!

The question always remains, should the truth ruin a great story? A truly fascinating look into building archaeology and what it can reveal.

Re-Turn: Can Deposit Scheme

On 1 February 2024, Ireland launched the new return deposit scheme called Re-Turn. It’s essentially a recycling initiative, where you pay a bit extra on your cans (and some plastics) and then get it back when you return them to the Re-Turn “vending machines”. Sounds good right? Well… the beer industry has a lot to say about it, as do customers. This week we chat to Caoimhe from TheCru.ie and Leah from Whiplash Beer to get the inside scoop.

Nuns & Beer

It’s St Brigid’s Day in Ireland and we’ve covered her before (S1E14) -but this week we thought we’d give a nod to the other monastic women in brewing, by honouring the nuns that brewed like (and with!) monks. Particularly, we focus on Hildegard of Bingen, a 12th century German Abbess who is responsible for many things, including the first (surviving) written history of the use of hops in beer. She sits alongside St Brigid (albeit unofficially) as the patron saint of beer!

Early Modern Brewhouses with Dr Susan Flavin

Weird Beer Laws

The regulatory affairs concerning alcoholic beverages can be very different, depending on where the drink is sold or imbibed. Most places have basic laws regarding labeling requirements, minimum age of consumers, trading hours, and drunk driving. These past 4 years in Ireland have seen legislative changes concerning alcohol being sold on Good Friday, whether breweries and distilleries may sell alcohol on their own premises, the banning of loyalty cards and promotions in off-licenses, minimum pricing on alcohol, and a separate alcohol section in supermarkets. Our hosts Bean, Katie, and Lisa wanted to learn more about alcohol laws in other countries, so they did some digging…prepare to hear about laws that are quirky, funny, and downright strange!

We wrap up the basics of our ingredient series with the unsung hero: H2O! Despite it covering most of Earth’s surface and making up most of our own bodies, we often take water for granted. We need this precious liquid to survive- on its own and in other drinks/ foods. Along with malted grain, hops, and yeast…water completes a beer recipe. It can come from many sources, be hard or soft, and be treated in various ways. Additionally, it is used in cleaning and waste removal. Our hosts Katie and Thandi chatted with friend of the pod Chelsea Merrick, a Senior Process Engineer specialising in water treatment.

One of the most iconic names associated with Ireland is that of “Guinness”. Christina, Katie, Lisa, and Thandi may not be drinking the Black Stuff in this episode, but they certainly delved into the historical archives of several breweries and their technological advances and scientific discoveries. There was a shift from local beer made in homes to the machine-driven mass production of beer (which could now be shipped), and this change had an impact on rural communities. Christina and Erica had the joy of chatting with Mirella Amato, a Master Cicerone, National Level BJCP Judge, and Doemens Bier Sommelier based in Canada. Mirella is a craft beer and sensory consultant and has written the book “Beerology: Everything You Need to Know to Enjoy Beer…Even More”. Her most recent endeavour is teaching an online course on how to pair beer with food. Some topics that came up included whether we are born with sensory abilities or if we can learn them, how having COVID-19 might impact our aroma and taste, and what resources a budding beer enthusiast can access in order to practice their tasting skills. We’re also joining Mirella’s campaign to celebrate women in beer on St Brigid's day ;)

Lisa, Christina, and Bean visit the physical Rye River brewery in Celbridge, County Kildare just outside of Dublin, Ireland, for an interview with Head Brewer Bill Laukitis. We talk about all the brands that Rye River produce (McGargles, Grafters, Solas, Crafty Brewing Co.), as well as Rye River’s core range and their experimental seasonal releases. We sample a brown ale with a special story, and we sample a seasonal brew with an even more barrel-aged story, because we are lucky ducks. We talk a little about Bill’s approach to quality control, his backstory, and who works in the rest of the brewery too!

Red Ales

Jessi from Kweza (Women in Beer)

We’re back and kicking off Season 2 with Jessi from Kweza Brewery ahead of their new Kickstarter campaign (which we'll post links to on our socials).

Kweza is Rwanda's first craft brewery, and it's owned and run by women! They've recently got their liquor and trading licenses and are now on a mission to get their brewpub launched.

They've been on a number of fundraising drives for the last year, and are now launching a Kickstarter in collaboration with a bunch of breweries in several other countries. The idea is that each brewery has to showcase Sorghum as an ingredient for the collab brew, since sorghum is a native grain of Rwanda and makes up a large part of Kweza recipes.

25: Women in Beer - Aine from Connemara

‘A modern beer from an ancient land.’ Christina, Thandi, and Katie talk with Aine who leads Connemara Brewing, one of the very newest wonders of the Wild Atlantic Way in the West of Ireland.

How did Aine O’Hora become a technical brewer of broad range and ability, and a maven of swabbing and quality control? With a biotechnology degree in DCU here, and a year’s work experience in Harp there. A bit of work in the pharmaceutical industry. A Masters at Herriot Watt in Scotland. Off to Australia’s Matilda Bay, working in wellies and learning her trade. From there to VB, processing 1100 hectolitre batches of ‘Victoria Bitter’ lager every 2.6 hours. Back to Ireland again, helping to set up craft brewers Wicklow Wolf. Finally arriving home again, and now making lager and ale by hand in an old-fashioned, open fermentation, ten hectolitre brewhouse. That’s how!

We wish the new project plenty more manual brewing and Quality Management Systems certificates in the years to come. Thanks to Aine and Connemara Brewing for the interview, and for bringing incredible local lager to the beauty spots of Ireland.

“Have you tried Dungarvan?” Christina, Lisa, and Joanne chat to Claire from Dungarvan, ahead of International Women's [Brew] Day and Women's History Month.

Claire Dalton is one of the four founders of Dungarvan Brewing Company, together with her husband Tom, her brother the Head Brewer Cormac, and Cormac’s wife Jen. Back in the crash of 2008, they were punters themselves watching the craft beer scene lap up to the Copper Coast, and they decided to take the plunge and make the beer themselves. The local community has proudly embraced and supported them ever since. Claire runs the tastings, tours, and the business side of the brewery. Expect to hear about discovering local beer, how the women in beer were always here, and sustainability in small breweries on the finish.
