Do nasty gnashers negate sex appeal? Well it’s time to dig out your teeth whitening strips and listen to Dukey, Sylvia and Marsha explore this not-so-age-old question. The trio have been indulging in a lot of trash telly this summer and a recent dental hygiene advert has them all baffled.

They’ll also ponder whether stalking can affect one’s driving skills in the return of ‘Analyse This’. Does Sugababes’ member Mutya Buena really feel fine in her Song 4 Mutya (Outta Control) or is it just the positive self talk we all need to be engaging in? You don’t need to be a sassy diva to tune in and find out but it would certainly help.

The Dukey Radio Show had a little tipple and put its best face forward into the New Year with a spruced up podcast and brand spanking new name. And then – sound of needle scratching across vinyl – what? A tardy Google revealed that the name we’d chosen, Skip to the End, was already the moniker of another rather fine podcast. What to do? Take inspiration from Howard Hughes of course. Isn’t that what you would have done? The eccentric gazillionaire didn’t just chuck away his bloated airplane, he dubbed Spruce Goose, when he realised it was too big to fly, he made it a museum attraction.

Like Hughes’s folly, we hung onto the podcast we’d recorded, complete with newly conceived theme tune, because it will please you. Dukey, Marsha and Sylvia investigate the glories of Femme Fatale Felt Porn, Dukey discusses his recent ‘opening’ and Irene releases her inner LL Cool J. Because some things are good enough to be saved from deletion. Oh hey… wait… that’s a cool name for a podcast. Let’s go with that.

Life is a cabaret, old chum. And it really is. Dukey recently had to fill in on bass duties for an Australian cabaret act who were performing in not just any venue but a ‘Gay Super Pub’. And it really was. With much fabulousness promised, Sylvia went along for the ride. And what a ride it was. Cocktail mixing hula dancers, Prosecco roadies and a drag queen weatherman. And what great weather we’ve enjoyed ever since.

The pair inform Marsha about the intricate details of the evening via banter that spans the spectrum from television judges to autopsies via serial killers. But, in the end, all Sylvia wants to find out is how much lungs are supposed to weigh.

An undoubted highlight of TDRS's visit to Edinburgh Fringe last year, this six foot tall comedy tour de force started her career as a flamenco dancer and very nearly worked for the FBI. Our theory is that 'the bureau' thought she was too funny to realistically undertake any assignments. The likes of Scarface were not brought down by jokes, were they? This NYC based comedian has appeared on pretty much every late night US chat show under the lack of sun (Conan, Colbert, Letterman and Ferguson) and has had Chloe Sevigny direct her in a short film for Miu Miu. And nearly nine months since first seeing her perform in Scotland's capital, Sylvia, Marsha and Dukey still do regular impressions of Carmen's fantastic one hour show. We imbibe, we fornicate, we make merry and frankly, if you have a problem with that, then…. Oh no, wait a minute…. Sorry… it’s just that this week Sylvia has been scolded, on two separate occasions, by officious women and everyone’s just a little on the defensive as a result.

Never mind because while she’s been having a doo doo of a time, Dukey has been having a more… well….Dada time. Like the absurdist art movement, he too has been involved in some screwy hijinks including an intra-band cage fight, a steampunk crowd who go all MacGyver on his ass and his very own ‘Hello, Cleveland’ moment.

Dukey also encountered a band who love the movie Mad Max: Fury Road well….. a lot… like seriously a lot. And they, like us, enjoy libations, relations and jubilations so much that they’ve written an entire song about it and we’ve stolen it from them for the title of this episode.

Join us as we examine all of the above as well as raise the questions: Why does Dukey know so many quotes from ‘Pretty Woman’? Why is Marsha going to the opera if she’s so freaked out about it? And what the hell is the brown note? (Do you know what it is? Shhhhhh…. don’t give it away.)

The Dukey Radio Show has won big! The show has bagged a record third interview with bass player extraordinaire (and Irene’s flaxen-haired love interest) Bruce Thomas. This time he is accompanied by the equally talented multi-instrumentalist Spencer Brown. They've been to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. They've seen. They've done. This is the sixth episode of The Dukey Radio Show to come with a health warning (from Irene). Despite the title, Part 6 of 'Write, said Fred' has nothing to do with either 'The Goon Show' or a certain band from the early 1990s who were far too sexy for their shirts. But it does contain an impressive quantity of expletives that are delivered in a tone that's best described as 'razor sharp'.

Our very own Marsha has recently joined a writing group, as discussed in 'Write, said Fred - Part 1 (09 January 2017), Part 2' (04 February '17), Part 3 (22 February '17), Part 4 (14 March '17) and Part 5 (03 April '17). Time takes on a very different dynamic in this 'end of term' instalment and there are nods to both Harold Pinter's 'The Betrayal' and Quentin Tarantino's 'Pulp Fiction' as Marsha's recollection of her writing group meeting unfolds. Yes, that may have sounded wanky. But it's not a patch on the behaviour of group member Trenton whose actions on the night serve as an excellent study in the theatre of a***holery. Somehow implausibly, however, his masterful display of weaponry becomes overshadowed by the fact that Simon Schama is on Fred's ceiling. Which begs the question, why is this notable historian looming down from the upper reaches of Write Club HQ?

Our very own Marsha has recently joined a writing group, as discussed in 'Write, said Fred - Part 1 (09 January 2017), Part 2' (04 February '17 ), Part 3 (22 February '17) and Part 4 (14 March '17). Things have gone a bit 'Bizarro-World' within the writing group this time around. Niceness has replaced catty. The most lefty member was sporting a Sarah Palin T-Shirt. There were minmal baked goods on display. And Fred's own personal submission was met with so much disdain that our own Marsha felt sorry for him. Almost. But there's still trampy behaviour aplenty with a Deep Throat manoeuvre, phallic windows, Marsha honking on her hip-flask and Calvinism.

The title of this episode may appear to be a bit rude at face value. But one should never put too much value on faces. Ok, some aspects of this podcast may be a bit rude. But, as you've read this far without being (overly) offended - this instalment of The Dukey Radio Show may still be fore you.

While Sylvia Silversmith was working in deepest Birmingham, Marsha MacDonald and Dukey decided to leave London in favour the English coast. Brighton to be precise. Their short trip predominantly served as a respite from the recent election results from the other side of the pond and all the fallout related to it. You see, the Rotarians of Tacoma Washington voted earlier this month to elect a new Grand Poobah and it all went a bit pear shaped.

Milo McCabe, the comedic genius behind 'The Unflappable Troy Hawke', is interviewed in this special instalment of 'The Dukey Radio Show'. Dukey first heard about our guest’s innovative musical endeavours with the band 123 and later, Clouds,through recent guest Bruce Thomas’s book “Rough Notes”. And, in a recent prog-themed special on this very show, Dave Dawson and Dukey waxed lyrical about Billy Ritchie’s influence on the likes of Yes and Emerson Lake & Palmer. In this first instalment of our three-part interview with Billy, we chat about our guest’s early years in the music business

From finding his sound with TheSatellites and the Premiers in early 1960s Scotland to being signed up by The Beatles’ manager Brian Epstein while in the band 123 - we discover that innovation comes with quite a cost attached to it. In the same way that Marty McFly’s guitar antics were shocking to his 1955 audience in the film Back to the Future – Britain wasn’t quite ready for Billy Ritchie’s blueprint for prog in the mid 1960s. To say that his band 123 were a Marmite outfit would be an understatement. From requiring police escorts to save the band from audience dissent to becoming the toast of swinging London Town with their now legendary residency at the Marquee Club in front of future prog demi-gods carefully watching and taking notes – it wasn’t an easy ride. But Ritchie's influence spawned an entire musical movement that is still going strong today.

Starsha Lee is a person.

And Starsha Lee is also a London based band.

Our guest is the singer from this musical outfit and also an artist who was recently an inadvertent victim of censorship from one of the world’s largest social networking sites.

But, for a band that describes themselves as "an inconvenient sound for inconvenient people" – this type of reaction is unsurprising.

To the uninitiated, Starsha Lee the vocalist possesses a unique register that cuts through the distinctive, driving and decidedly dirty guitars of Crispin Gray from Daisy Chainsaw, Queenadreena and The Dogbones fame.

Dave Dawson Discusses Clouds - A Prog Rock Special

In this special Prog Rock themed episode of TDRS, you’ll hear two men (of which our special guest, Dave Dawson, is one) happilybantering and babbling away with their respective heads in the Clouds. Clouds the band that is. Haven’t heard of them? You’re not alone. Neither had Dukey until recently.

When our studio guest met the keyboardplayer from Clouds, Billy Richie, while working as a jobbing singer at anotorious East End pub once owned by The Krays – the Scottish born master ofthe Hammond Organ mentioned an important aspect of his history as a musician. While comparing musical battle scars, asone does when you take on a new gig, Billy Ritchie politely indicated that he’d“invented prog”. And, as it turns out, he really did.

There's also a subtle tribute to the late Garry Shandling at the beginning of the podcast. RIP.

Dear Mr. Kershaw: A Pensioner Writes is acaptivating collection of letters to musicians analysing lyrical anomalies intheir work. The span of musical styles that are covered in this hilarious book is vast. From Yes to Yazz. And from Take That to Frank Turner via Heaven 17and Saxon. The observations of this retired proofreader Derek Philpott, and hisfriend Wilf Turnbull, are thought provoking and amusing in equal measure andgarner enlightening replies from the musicians they target. The pedantry or,rather, the attention to detail in their respective analyses of popular song lyrics are spot on. In the TDRS studio to discuss thegestation of the book is David - the brainchild of Dear Mr. Kershaw and the sonof Derek Philpott.

The pair discuss how this labour of love came to be. From first coming up with the idea for project at the unlikely setting of a wedding reception eight years ago through to securing Crowdfunding for the book last year, we trace the steps at how Derek Philpott and his son realised their dream. And made many a pop star laugh in the process.

After featuring one of the mostdistinctive bassists in rock (Bruce Thomas) on last week's show - we decided todo something a little bit different for this episode.

The London based Teutonic duo,Leisure Tank, are bombastic yet tuneful and carry the delicate balance betweenaggression and groove in an authoritative and unique manner. They are also aband who don’t require the services of a bassist. Do you see what we did there? Yes, we've gone bass free. Sans bassiste.

Our interview with Leisure Tankis actually the tale of two bands. Both duos and featuring both our studioguests in each ensemble. Having met each other in late 90s Berlin, Budi & K.C. initiallyformed, played and toured extensively under the name K.C. McKanzie with a folkinfused sound. Some six years later and with a change of instrumentation,direction and base - the Teutonic twosome formed Leisure Tank.

Budi and K.C. wax lyrical about linedance riots, cowboy dress codes, gigs being interrupted by Nazis, how to mic up a fart pillow andwhat it’s like to play amongst Island Monkeys.

Bruce Thomas Interview

This week we welcome a special guest who, by his own definition, plays bass and writes books. In terms of the former skill set, Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee Bruce Thomas has added his distinctive, highly melodic and punchy bass lines with Elvis Costello & The Attractions, The Pretenders, Suzanne Vega, Al Stewart, Quiver, Billy Bragg, Tasmin Archer, The Roadrunners (featuring Paul Rodgers on vocals) and many more. And, as a writer, Thomas was responsible for bringing to life the definitive biography of martial arts star Bruce Lee entitled "The Fighting Spirit". In addition to having several other literary projects in the pipeline - his latest book, "Rough Notes", was released last summer. This exciting best seller is both an autobiography and a cultural history covering Bruce's entire career in music with a particular focus on his twenty years on, and off, as an Attraction. The pair discuss his latest book, complex band dynamics, "that" infamous run-in with Stephen Stills, backstage shenanigans, the gestation of the bass line to "Pump It Up", making musical pilgrimages and explore some intensive gear geekery along the way including the development of Thomas's signature bass called "The Profile".

Pahnl Interview

TDRS isbased in East London and one of the benefits to being in this part of thecapital are the ever changing works of art that appear temporarily on walls,hoardings, signs, buildings and any other surface that can host spray paint.It’s the world’s biggest art gallery. And one of the most exciting galleries ofthis open-air variety is on our very doorstep and found via the many roads andalleyways of Shoreditch. Through pottering about in our neck of the woods, we’vebeen introduced to the work of Hunto, Stik and Joachim amongst many others. Whereasthe graffiti tags of yesteryear may have been once seen as a nuisance, thetemporary beauty of the work of today’s street artists is as captivating as itis ever changing. And it’s quickly becoming a commodity of note. We’ve beeninspired by these acetate carrying artistic rebels both here in London and inour travels across the country - becoming enthusiasts of this movement in a bigway. In this episode of TDRS, we chat with one of the most exciting exponentsof street art in Britain today. Taking his influence from comics and street signage,whilst adding his own subversive and often highly humorous twist – our guest usesstencils, stickers, posters, screen printing, film and photography to bring hisown small world to life. His name, is Pahnl.

We’ll be ending the show with a “Tribute Mash-Up” thatcelebrates the lives of Maurice White from Earth Wind & Fire and TerryWogan. There’s also an appearance from Glenn Frey in a less than cheerfulguise.

In addition, they'll beexploring Penlington's many exciting new projects including the book "AnAttempt at Exhausting a Place in London" and they’ll also wax lyricalabout darts.

Boxing Day Clever

In "Tour Talk", we discover the perils of transport disasters and what it's like to do the worst gig of one's adult life in front off a musical hero who just so happens to be filming the vile live experience. Dukey also describes playing alongside a support band who have a standout USP - heckling the audience.

In addition, "Cover of a Cover" is back and puts Madonna's "Ray of Light" under the spotlight. Ms. Ciccone's tune has psychedelic lyrics for a reason.

In this special two part instalment of The Dukey Radio Show, we interview musician, raconteur, producer, technician, engineer, wine expert, synth whizzand all round nice chap David Harman.

Be warned, however, as gear geekery meets inebriation in a bigway in this episode.

Our chat with the synth guru behind Chicane and Cauldronated explores how keyboards and recordingtechnology have shaped both our guest’s life as a musician and as a person. From his early days in the reassuringly middle class sounding band, The Herbacious Borders, through to programming the keyboard sounds for the iconic West End productions of Cats and Les Miserables - Harman's detailing of his musical journey to date is engaging and funny in equal measure.

In the style of the television series Drunk History, David and Dukey also imbibe throughout the podcast in a manner that can best be described as being proud and highly respectful ofthe glories of red wine. As the interview progresses, you will hear someslurring. And, indeed, the listener will note that the banter frequently goes off on some unpredictable tangents. In any case, it’s remarkable how the allegedly cold worldof keyboard synthesis can be such an effective conduit for telling the story ofone’s musical gestation and coming of life. But, alas, this is only part one ofDave Harman’s two part odyssey. Next week, we shall continue the drunken geargeekery in earnest.
