Brody Kozlowski is the first basketball signing for new BYU coach Kevin Young. He is six-feet-eight inches tall and the two-time Utah 6-A Player of the Year. He is also the son of our BYUtv colleague Kristen Kozlowski.

One of the great events of the year in the state of Utah is set for July 4th at LaVell Edwards Stadium. We are talking about Stadium of Fire. This year’s headliner is the Jonas Brothers. Holly picked up a tennis racquet for the first time when she was just 8 years old. It wasn’t long before her father Dan Parkinson recognized her natural talent for the sport. This began a life-long journey in tennis that took her around the world as a professional athlete where she achieved a ranking of #83 in the world-wide Women’s Tennis Association top 100 in 2000. Today you can find her anxiously engaged in developing the next generation of tennis stars.

Bronson Kaufusi played defensive end and linebacker at BYU, he also played center on the basketball team during his sophomore year. After BYU he had stints with the Ravens, Jets and Packers and if you noticed this past season, he did a little moonlighting on our BYUtv “GAMEDAY” program and we expect that to continue into the future.

Riley played quarterback in 32 games at BYU, including 19 starts. He finished with 4,032 passing yards and 35 touchdowns. He also rushed for 858 yards and six touchdowns between 2009-2012.

Second, men’s basketball Assistant Coach, Nick Robinson. Nick is getting BYU basketball ready for its first season in the Big 12. He knows all about winning. At Liberty High School in Missouri, his teams went 54-3 over his junior and senior seasons. As a two-year starter at Stanford, he was a captain on the No. 1 ranked Cardinal basketball squad. He is now getting ready for his fifth season at BYU.

Steve has been coaching the tight ends at BYU since 2016. Before that, he was offensive coordinator and quarterback coach at Weber State and at Southern Utah. Before that, he was a defensive assistant at Utah.

Jen Rockwood is (and has been) the ONLY head coach in the successful history of women’s soccer at BYU. She has been at the helm since 1995 and is No. 12 all-time with 435 Division One victories. Her .751% winning percentage is 8th best among active coaches. Seven times she has been voted a conference Coach of the Year—and for the first time, she is leading the Cougars into the Big 12.

• BYU Football: Official member of the Big 12 (Commissioner Brett Yormark). President Shane Reese said Saturday Stadium of Fire that you can feel the change on campus. Excitement is everywhere.
• Reducing the Transfer Portal windows – Is it a good idea? NCAA wants to cut the transfer windows from 60 days to 30 days. The winter portal was 45 days (Dec. 5 to Jan. 18), the spring portal was 15 days (April 15 to April 30). A final vote will take place in October. Is it a good idea?
• NFL Camps: Football returns this month! So when can we see Jaren Hall and Puka Nacua on the field?
• Big 12 TV deal is complete: Finalized last Friday. Contract with FOX and ESPN runs 2025 through 2031. BYU will receive between 18-19 million this year and next and become a full revenue partner in 2025 – reportedly worth 50 million annually.
• LaVell Edwards Stadium. Royal blue end zones. Stretch Y at mid field with Big 12 logos along the side.

Commissioner Brett Yormark on the BYU Brand:

“BYU is a national brand. They can become a household brand for sure, and we are going to help them like they help the conference. If BYU wins, the conference wins. If the conference wins, BYU wins. I want ESPN and FOX to glamorize all of our programs. I’m confident that will happen with BYU.”

“When I got on campus (last fall), which was the first time for me at BYU, I sensed the energy and enthusiasm. I’ve grown up in college sports and I know the breadth and depth of BYU and Cougar Nation. It’s a big national brand. It fits so perfectly within our conference footprint. For me, that validation really was the day they accepted their invitation.”

Commissioner Brett Yorkmark on Expansion:

“From where I sit, it’s not so much about the Pac-12 tv deal. When I think of expansion, whoever we bring in needs to bring value to the equation. When I think about schools that could be added, we have guiding principles for expansion – academics, leadership, cultural fit, geography, athletic performance, and brand.”

“I’d like to stay at 14 teams, even after the departures of Oklahoma and Texas. We’ll see about that. We are not chasing a number. It’s more about the fit.”

San Diego State: After informing the Mountain West Conference that they intended to leave the conference by the June 30th deadline, they changed their mind. The Aztecs are staying put – for now. As BYU found out over the years as an Independent, to join a P5 conference, you have to be invited.

Commissioner Brett Yormark on Basketball:

“We are working with ESPN right now and I am excited about the schedule. It will be out in August or September and that should be an exciting moment and we will amplify it. It will be an 18-game conference schedule. Each school will play five teams twice and eight teams once.”

Women’s Hoops:

• BYU commit Delaney Gibb is in training camp this week with Canada’s Under-19 National Team. They are preparing to go overseas and play next month. Gibb is a four-star guard, and No. 2 player in Canada. She will be at BYU in the fall of 2024.

Golf:

• Former Cougar Peter Kuest is enjoying his first top 5 finish on the PGA Tour. Kuest got into the tournament on a sponsor exception and made the most of it – finishing tied for fourth at the Rocket Mortgage Classic – good for a payday around $365,000.

• How tough is the tour? Last year’s Rocket Mortgage champion Tony Finau, and last week’s second place finisher Zac Blair both missed the cut.

We also were honored to have Kelly Poppinga as our guest. Kelly played linebacker at BYU and won back-to-back Mountain West Conference championships in 2006 and 2007. Deputy Athletic Director Brian Santiago joins us tonight in studio. Brian won a state championship at Provo High School and played college basketball and baseball at Utah Valley and basketball at Fresno State. He finished the 1993-1994 season with the Fresno record in assists with 233 and he was second in the nation—hitting 50 percent of his three-point shots. In 2002 he was inducted into the Utah Valley Athletic Hall of Fame. He is the current Deputy Athletic Director at BYU. It is our pleasure to welcome Brian Santiago to Y’s Guys.

Ready! Set! Spike! Men’s volleyball soars into the new season.

Tyler Allgeier: First Cougar running back to reach 1,000 rushing yards in a season. Allgeier not only led the Falcons in rushing, but also set the new single season rookie rushing record in Atlanta with 1,035 yards. What a debut in Atlanta’s 7-10 season.

Jamaal Williams: Hours later, he became the second BYU running back to surpass 1,000 yards. He too led the Lions in rushing with 1,066 yards. Williams also scored two touchdowns to break Barry Sanders’ franchise record with 17 regular season rushing touchdowns. After the game Jamaal broke down in tears on NBC as he dedicated the game to his late great-grandfather.

Scott Gearheart who is the BYU Alumni chair in the northwest where BYU is playing this coming Saturday.

Trent Pratt who is getting ready for his first full season as BYU’s head baseball coach. Trent Pratt was put in charge in the middle of last season when Mike Littlewood abruptly resigned. In his 25 games as the interim head coach, the Cougars went 16-9 and reached the conference tournament, and a short time later, Pratt won the full-time position.

Dan Forsman, a nine-time winner on the PGA and Champions Tour. He has hit big putts on CBS to win playoffs – and lived to tell about it.
