We were having a fun handful of days before last night's loss to the Sabres, weren't we? After demolishing the Seattle Kraken and Winnipeg Jets, Oilers fans were feeling pretty good about where the team was at. Unfortunately, feeling better about the team made last night's loss to the Buffalo Sabres land like a Looney Tunes-style anvil on the head. It's a strange time to be an Edmonton Oilers fan. We have high expectations for the team around these parts, and for the third year in a row, their start to the season has been anything but spectacular. It gets even more interesting when I've been to Calgary, Vancouver, Toronto, and Montreal in a single week. Sticking with the Oilers, how could you not talk about the wild game they had against Columbus, when the team both got booed on home ice and also came back for the win? After wrapping up the intro with a full breakdown of the Vancouver Nation Vacation, I dove into the rollercoaster that is being an Edmonton Oilers fan in 2025. While the Oilers' record isn't actually that bad, the inconsistencies from game to game are undoubtedly frustrating. After a run of three horrible (read: painful) losses in a row, the Oilers got themselves back into the win column on Tuesday night against the Senators. As much as it was nice to see the boys grab two points, I’d be lying if I said it would have been cool to see them get there without taking the hardest road possible. The good news is that Jake Walman made his return to the lineup in Detroit, and it didn’t take him long to make an impact. Even with reduced minutes in his return, having Walman back felt right, given all the things he tends to do well. Not enough good news for you? Connor McDavid also scored last night in Detroit, proving that he does indeed still remember how to do that if any of you were concerned.

After a tough loss to the Calgary Flames in the season opener, the Edmonton Oilers rebounded with a pair of wins over the Vancouver Canucks and New York Rangers. While those two wins came after very different games and with very different heroes, the larger point is that our boys found a way to win despite two vastly different styles on the ice. Not only were those wins important, but I also got the chance to pump Stuart Skinner's tires a little bit after quieting down the haters with his first shutout of the season. With the Oilers' pre-season finally near its end, we're finally seeing the team get some work done ahead of the start of the 2025-26 NHL season. The problem, of course, is that we're still nowhere closer to a solution on the Connor McDavid contract situation. While it was a quieter week in terms of McDavid news, Kaprizov's massive extension in Minnesota certainly had folks connecting some dots. In other news, Stan Bowman pulled the trigger on a trade with Utah early Wednesday that saw the Oilers sending future considerations to the Mammoth in exchange for goaltender Connor Ingram. Currently, Ingram has been assigned to the Bakersfield Condors, but the move did lead to many wondering what the plan is for the goalies now that Ingram is in the fold.

We made it through the NHL draft and the start of free agency, and the Edmonton Oilers were quieter than many fans had hoped they would be, but I wasn't actually all that surprised. Given the lack of tradable assets and minimal cap space available, from my side of the computer screen, I wasn't overly surprised that the Oilers were quiet even though my heart hoped Stan Bowman would pull out some magic. Looking at some of the contracts GMs handed out around the league as the day wore on, I found myself feeling increasingly happier that Stan Bowman wasn't blowing the dollars he had on players like Tanner Jeannot and Cody Ceci. I'm not saying I wanted the Oilers to go out and sign those guys, but my point was that some very mid players locked in for a pile of money.

While I think a lot of Oilers fans thought the team would trade Evander Kane to save some cap space this summer, I don't think many of us expected it to happen this soon, especially not to a division rival like the Vancouver Canucks. It's hard to feel much sunshine the day after the Edmonton Oilers bowed out of the Stanley Cup Final in only six games. After picking up massive OT wins in Games 1 and 4, the Oilers were in great shape heading back to Rogers Place on Saturday night. Unfortunately, the wheels really fell off when the lights got brightest, as the boys were outplayed by a sizeable margin in the following two. The Panthers were so much better in Games 5 and 6 that you almost wondered which Oilers team you were watching. It certainly wasn't the one that stormed through the first three rounds and made things look easy.

I'm still on cloud nine after last night's Game 1 win, so I didn't really want to spend much time talking about anything other than what happened on Wednesday at Rogers Place. From the Mega Stream kicking off the day to making my way to the rink with Woz to stressing through a very tight game against Florida, everything about Wednesday night was a blast, and I could not be more excited about what the boys can do in the rest of this series. The stars shone bright, the depth came through, Stuart Skinner battled hard in net, and the Oilers ended up with their first Stanley Cup Final series lead in 35 years.

Vibes are high in Edmonton after a big win over the Stars in Game 4 to take a stranglehold on the Western Conference Final, but the victory was not without its costs. Zach Hyman was forced to leave the game early in the first period after Mason Marchment caught him with a hit he wasn't expecting, and the result is that ZMH will miss the remainder of the season and require surgery. Needless to say, this is bad news. On the flip side, if we're going to stay positive, the Oilers are incredibly deep and will need some of those guys to step up and make some magic happen in his absence.

The Oilers are kicking off their third trip to the Western Conference Final in the last four seasons, and that has the city buzzing about whether our boys can get through to the big dance for a second straight season. Standing in their way is a Dallas Stars team that has rolled through the first two rounds, and it will be a significant challenge for our boys to keep their offence at bay. While many of us are understandably focused on Mikko Rantanen's playoff success, a number of Dallas' depth players have been held in check through their first eight wins, and Edmonton will need to keep those players quiet if they want to get through this series.

I started this week's podcast with an admission that I've once again made poor life choices on a school night. Seeing as the Oilers and Golden Knights kicked off their series last night, I felt it was necessary to have a few adult beverages to celebrate the occasion. The result, of course, is that I feel like death today, which made accomplishing my day-to-day tasks 200% more difficult. Even so, I was in a great mood after the Oilers won their series opener, which is certainly not the case for some Oilers fans around here.

Turning my full attention back to the Oilers, I started with a recap of Game 1 between the Oilers and Golden Knights, and how a big win like that sets the table for a strong finish. I mean, yeah it would have been great if the boys hadn't needed to come up with a fifth straight comeback win — a new NHL record — but I'd be lying if I pretended it wasn't exciting to watch. A big part of that comeback was the result of the depth scoring coming through once again, which led to me spending the next handful of minutes pumping tires for a few of our boys.

Isn't it amazing how many things can change in a week? When I recorded last Wednesday's episode, the Oilers had just spectacularly lost Game 1 and were about to drop Game 2 even worse somehow. The good news is that sports are the best reality show on earth, and watching our boys come roaring back with three straight wins is almost as good as it gets. I also touched on how great the other first round series have been, and how working through a playoff run can be tough on the body.

Turning my full attention back to the Oilers, I started with a recap of games 3-5 and how the Oilers have gotten better with each passing period. That's not to say that they were perfect by any stretch, but Edmonton's ability to crank up their resiliency when it mattered most was an unstoppable force for Los Angeles. There's also the Calvin Pickard effect, as the team clearly enjoys playing in front of a guy who seems like the nicest man on earth. Then there's Evan Bouchard's four goals, Evander Kane's impact, and Leon Draisaitl tying Messier and Gretzky for one of the wildest playoff records ever.

I kicked off this week's episode of BLTN with a recap of what's happened so far. Starting with the Game 1 party at Greta, I wanted to thank everyone who came out for a late start on a Monday and turned the bar into a vibe, even though the game started horribly. But as any good Oiler fan will tell you, the boys haven't exactly had much success in Game 1s historically, but the reaction to the loss was incredible to watch.

As for the team itself, there were countless areas where the Oilers needed to improve, at least early in the game. For the first 38 minutes of Game 1, the Oilers looked like they couldn't do anything remotely productive, which allowed the Kings to essentially dominate the first two periods. Even with the loss, the way Edmonton was able to claw their way back from a 4-0 deficit has to have put a seed of doubt in the Kings' minds. Looking ahead at Game 2, I walked through some of the areas I think the Oilers can improve and how the new line combinations posted this morning could impact that plan.

I started this week's Better Lait Than Never episode with a little playoff preview from an Oilersnation content perspective. I walked through what we've got coming for playoff coverage and how excited I am to get the post-season going, even though so many people seem down on our boys right now. Just because we're not travelling to L.A. for Round 1 this year, that doesn't mean we don't still have plenty planned for playoff content.

Turning the podcast to the Oilers, I looked ahead at the 4th straight playoff kickoff against the Los Angeles Kings and how I expect this round to be different. Even though I still believe the Oilers can win, there are definitely some concerns going into this series that are new and scary for our boys. I also touched briefly on the Oilers' final regular season matchup against the San Jose Sharks as Connor McDavid looks for his eighth career 100-point season. Given that he's sitting at 99 points on the year and the final game is against the last-place Sharks, I'm feeling pretty good about him getting there.

I started this week's episode of BLTN with a quick recap of the #NationVacation to Vegas that happened this past week and how it was so much fun to hang out with everyone again. Turning the podcast to the Oilers, I had to start with the heater Ryan Nugent-Hopkins has been on over his last four games and how it's so much fun to watch my guy crank it up when the team needs him most. While the start of RNH's season wasn't the most productive offensively, the guy has really turned it on down the stretch. Same goes for Jeff Skinner, who, all of a sudden, has three goals in his last two games after getting bumped up the lineup with Connor and Leon out. Yet, based on the line combos from practice yesterday, our man Skinner could be back to his usual spot on the 3rd line against Dallas.

The other story that popped around here this week was the quote from Stan Bowman on Hockey Night in Canada that expressed his confidence in the team's ability to re-sign Connor McDavid to an extension. While Bowman didn't get into any details apart from saying he felt confident they would get it done, the GM's words were music to the fanbase's ears. Sticking with contracts, Jacob Chychrun signed a massive extension with Washington yesterday, which led to a discussion about how that deal will affect Evan Bouchard's upcoming contract negotiations.

I kicked off this week's podcast by thanking the Gords for snapping the streak of cold weather we've been battling in Edmonton over the last two weeks. It may be a small thing, but just being able to go outside and walk my dog this week has been a huge win. I also took listeners behind the scenes a little bit about what we're working on ahead of the trade deadline, including our Daily Faceoff Trade Deadline special.

Turning the podcast to the Oilers, it doesn't take much searching to see how upset the fanbase is right now after a run of putrid games put the team on their first four-game losing streak of the season. It's not all bad news, though, as Leon Draisaitl continues to light the world on fire, and Matthew Savoie is looking like he could be a damned good player for a long time. That said, with only two weeks left until the trade deadline, a lot of us are getting antsy about what Stan Bowman may or may not do at the league's annual swap 'n shop.

After missing an episode last week, I'm back with a fresh episode of Better Lait Than Never to recap what's been happening over the last couple of weeks. Starting with my trip to Montreal, I gave some insight about why I was even there, some of the meetings we had, and what it was like to go to my first game at the Bell Centre. I know I said a bunch of times that I wasn't excited about the tournament, but it's amazing how quickly that changed after only a single game.

To start off the news, I looked at some of the latest Oilers news now that the boys are back on the ice. From there, I offered a quick preview of Thursday's Canada/USA 4 Nations Final. Even though that game doesn't really mean a whole lot in terms of the overall hockey history, there's little doubt that both nations are fired up to be facing off against each other in the final. Based on the hype for tomorrow's rematch, you'd almost think this was an Olympic final or something, and I love every minute of it.

After the wildfires devastated Jasper last summer, we understandably didn't know that the pond hockey tournament at the Jasper Park Lodge would be held this year. Yet, as the months rolled along, our friends at Tourism Jasper told us that we'd be heading back for the fourth consecutive January, and I could not have been more excited to get back out there. As always, the tournament couldn't have been more fun.

Looking at our beloved Edmonton Oilers, how could I not start with the return of Connor McDavid? After three games in jail, McDavid returned to the lineup against the Seattle Kraken and made an impact on the scoresheet almost immediately. It was another one of those games where the boys were flat to start for whatever reason, and thanks to a tying from No. 97, they were able to rally back for a third straight win.

I kicked off this week's podcast with an update on the Dollars for Dogs campaign that kicked off on Monday. As much as I thought it would be fun to eat nothing but hot dogs for as long as possible, eating only glizzies and nothing else has proven to be difficult. Not only was Skinner fantastic between the pipes, but that may have been one of the Oilers' best defensive efforts all season. Needless to say, it was a big win. On the downside, the Kings are a dirty hockey club, and there is no better example than the $5000 fine Adrian Kempe was hit with for slew-footing. Even with Kapanen jumping in immediately, that play re-sparked my concerns about the Oilers getting tougher.

I started this week's podcast episode by recapping my trip to Toronto. While I went to the 6ix for work purposes, a big part of the story was the Sheet launch event for Jeff Marek's new show. I don't usually get invited to events like that, so experiencing it firsthand and watching the spectacle play out was incredibly interesting. I started this week's podcast by discussing my excitement for this week's #NationVacation. Heading to another city to watch the Oilers play is one of my favourite things to do, and that excitement builds even further when we're going to a place I've never been before. Starting the podcast, how could I not talk about what happened in the US last night with the presidential election? Not that I wanted to dive into politics at all, but the reaction to the results was quite a wild dive into the human experience. Moving along quickly, I then recapped Monday's Oilers game on Amazon Prime, which was the first of four nights we'll have on the streaming platform. From the product to the experience to the presentation, I offered my take on what it was like to watch hockey differently.

Keeping with the Oilers, I kicked off the news with the stunning revelation that Connor McDavid will be back in the Oilers lineup only nine days after suffering an ankle injury on his first shift against the Columbus Blue Jackets. Given that he was supposed to be out of the lineup for 2-3 weeks, seeing him on the top line at Wednesday's morning skate was certainly a surprise. Then again, should we be surprised? If there's one thing Connor McDavid has done repeatedly in his career, it's defying the odds when it comes to his recovery time, and this ankle injury was just the latest example.

I kicked off this week's episode of BLTN with a look back on Friday's Pittsburgh Penguins game and how it was the most fun I've had an Oilers game in quite some time. Not only did I have a blast with the boys, but we even ended up at the casino together afterward in the hopes of great wins. I also spent a few minutes talking about the World Series and the insane moment that happened in last night's game when a Yankees fan tried to pull a ball out of Mookie Betts' hand.

Turning the podcast to the Oilers, I had to start with the news that Connor McDavid will be out of Edmonton's lineup for the next 2-3 weeks with an ankle injury. While that timeline isn't as bad as it could have been for our captain, the Oilers will need a bunch of players to step up in his absence. I mean, if Monday's game against the Blue Jackets is any indication of what the team will look like without their captain, then we are in a world of trouble.

I kicked off this week's episode of BLTN by wondering aloud how it's possible that the Oilers 2024-25 season feels nearly identical to the disastrous start from a year ago. At 2-4-1 through seven games, it's not like the Oilers are down and out or anything like that, but I'm genuinely puzzled that a team this talented can allow this slow start to happen again.

Digging into what's gone wrong, I started the news by looking at the losses against Dallas and Carolina. Both of those games were well within reach for our boys, but the lack of goal-scoring is really making it difficult for the team to gain any traction. That said, I also feel like it's a matter of time before Edmonton's luck starts to turn and pucks start going in the net, but it's been painful watching them struggle to get there.

Making matters worse, some of our former friends are finding success in new markets while their old stomping grounds continue to struggle offensively. So, even though many of us believe the Oilers will turn things around, this early part of the season has been a tough pill to swallow. As the losses continue to pile up, the fanbase keeps getting more and more restless and louder about voicing their displeasure.

I kicked off this week's podcast with a behind-the-scenes update from Nation HQ that had basically the whole staff cheering for Oilers losses. I know that sounds like something that shouldn't happen at a company called Oilersnation, but things tend to change when Tyler Yaremchuk makes a cat food bet. And seeing as last night's game was the deciding factor in whether or not Tyler got back into the meow mix, the results had everyone in our orbit dialled into every goal and mistake.

Turning the podcast back to the Oilers, the team won their first game of the season last night against Philadelphia, but they sure didn't make it easy on themselves. Starting with two quick power play goals against, the Oilers found themselves in a hole before the first period was even half-over, and I don't think I'm talking out of school when I said the vibes were anything but bright. Fortunately, a pair of scraps from two unlikely combatants seemed to right the ship a little bit, and our boys went on to win, but I'd be lying if I said it didn't look dicey there for a minute.

With only a few hours to wait until puck drop, I cranked out a non-traditional episode of BLTN to capture the community's excitement and tee off what I hoped would be a fantastic night at Rogers Place. Having never been to a banner-raising ceremony before, I was pumped to get back to the rink and watch them hang up a reminder to commemorate an unbelievable season. No, it wasn't the banner we wanted to see go up at Rogers Place, but I was choosing to treat this one like an appetizer.

Changing gears, a lot of Oilers news has happened since the last podcast, and I tried to make as much sense of it as possible. From roster decisions to trying to make sense of the salary cap situation with Kane going on the LTIR, I walked through the week's biggest stories and offered my take on how those stories will impact the upcoming season. I mean, that was the plan at least. As you'll hear, anything to do with math is the last thing I should comment on, but I gave it the ol' college try anyway.

Finally, I wrapped up this quick episode of BLTN with a guest Righteous Sack Beating from Dooks, who covered a wide range of topics. Needless to say, my man was in peak form with this voicemail as he battled his brain to come up with the right words for his complaint. I started this week's podcast with a rant about the NHL pre-season. No, this wasn't an RSB but rather a thought I had to let out after another round of NHL stars had to leave their respective games with injuries. At this point, not only am I over the pre-season, but all these injuries have really punctuated the point that this tune-up period shouldn't be longer than a few games max.

Kicking off the podcast, I started the show with some brand new music from Dangersuede after I spent the last few weeks asking why the BLTN original tunes had stopped flowing in. Seeing as I hadn't listened to the song before it made its debut on the podcast, I gave my first impressions on the new song and loved it so much I had to replay it twice. Turning the podcast back to the Oilers, a report by Elliotte Friedman suggests that the Oilers don't plan to keep Evander Kane on the shelf all season and that he could return to the lineup early in 2025. Seeing as that doesn't fit my plan for the organization to cheat, I wondered out loud how likely that actually is to happen. Is Kane really going to come back in February, or will there be a mysterious soft tissue type of setback that keeps him sidelined for *checks notes* another couple of months.

I started this week's podcast with a quick run through of our Oilersnation annual planning meetings that I just got home from, which was also the reason why the show was late by a day. Seeing as this was the third year of these annual sessions, it's interesting to see how much the company has grown over the last 36 months and how we're not anywhere close to being done. I also decided this past week that I'm a Vikings fan now, so I walked through that decision and admitted that stretching it out as long as I did was more annoying than it was helpful.

Turning the podcast back to the Oilers, the big news that came down this week was that both Darnell Nurse and Evander Kane are expected to miss the start of training camp due to injuries. Even though we all knew that Kane is banged up, hearing Nurse will be out for a while was certainly a surprise. All of a sudden, the Travis Dermott PTO started to make a little more sense from a depth perspective, no? On a more positive note, Leon Draisaitl is not exactly being shy about his want for Connor McDavid to sign an extension with the Oilers next summer, and hearing those two talk about the idea makes me feel all warm and tingly inside.

I started this week's podcast with a quick recap from Friday's Oilersnation Open and how this year's golf tournament was one of the greatest we've ever had. From the volunteers to the golfers to the fantastic shape the Millwoods Golf Course was in for our big day, everything about this year's tourney was fantastic. Not only did we raise a pile of money for Gregor's Grads, but we also had a fantastic day together out on the course, and I already cannot wait for next year's tournament.

Turning the podcast back to hockey, I started the news with a tribute to Johnny Gaudreau. Even though he was an opponent throughout his career, Thursday night's news was heartbreaking in every possible way. That's why I wanted to spend a few minutes talking about one of the league's best players and how going up against him as often as the Oilers did made for a fantastic rivalry. Even days later, I still can't believe it.

Changing gears, the Oilers signed Leon Draisaitl to an eight-year, $112 million contract extension on Tuesday, the news we've been waiting for basically all summer. As an Oilers fan my entire life, I had gotten used to our best players leaving when it came time to sign big deals, but yesterday's news basically erased all those memories from my early fandom. Not only did the Oilers retain one of the best players in the NHL, but this extension basically ensured that Draisaitl will be an Oiler for life, which is something that the older fans haven't experienced before.

I started off this week's podcast with a dose of my usual nonsense. From getting into the Olympics to the stress of picking an NFL team to back, the best part of the off-season is filling my day with nonsense and shenanigans. If there's one thing I love more than anything, it's wasting everyone's time with nonsense and tomfoolery, and that's basically what the first 10 minutes of today's show were.

Here I thought today's episode of Better Lait Than Never was going to be ripe with shenanigans and talk of which NFL team I should hitch my wagon to for next season, but the Oilers came out with some big news today that dramatically changed the tone of my show. The Oilers announced via their social media channels that the team has hired Stan Bowman as the new general manager this morning, and I legitimately thought Oilers Twitter was about to explode.

Getting into the shenanigans I had initially planned, I played the audio from Woz's trip to the dollar store to buy snacks for the staff at Nation HQ, and the results were hilarious. Not only did Woz accept the $20 snack challenge like a champ, but I actually thought he did a great job with it despite thinking straight saltines are a wonderful snack. Needless to say, sending Woz to the dollar store taught us a lot about how he operates, and it was a fascinating look inside his mind.

Lastly, I wrapped up this week's show with a handful of guest RSBs about Stan Bowman and why the Oilers felt the need to go this route, given that there were likely other candidates that could have fit the bill. As you'll hear, people wanted their opinions on the subject to be heard, and I was happy to give them the platform to do so. I started this week's podcast with a quick roundup of all things reality TV, new music, and why I love taking time in the off-season to shut my brain off and watch these reality show train wrecks. As the summer of Baggedmilk continues, a big part of it is taking time to recharge the batteries after what was an intense season covering the Oilers, and I couldn't think of a better way than watching 20-somethings fumble their way through reality TV dating concepts.

Turning the podcast back to the Oilers, there's not a lot of news happening right now, but that didn't stop not-a-GM-but-totally-a-GM Jeff Jackson from making another trade. This time, he sent struggling prospect Xavier Bourgault to the Ottawa Senators in exchange for Roby Jarventie, a rugged Finn who missed a big chunk of last season with a knee injury. I also walked through a bunch of quotes that came out of the annual Zach Hyman Golf Tournament this week, including Connor McDavid's thoughts on how the Oilers' offseason has looked so far.

Lastly, I wrapped up this week's show with an RSB about grocery store etiquette and another round of voicemails ranging from summer in Edmonton, some light Oilers talk, a prank attempt, and everything in between. Kicking off this week's podcast, I got started with a little bit of music talk. Not only did I watch and love the new Nickelback documentary that's up on Netflix, but I also premiered a brand new BLTN original song that made me laugh out loud. I always get excited any time new music comes into the podcast, and this week's tune was no exception. Simply amazing.

Turning the show back to the Oilers, I walked through the little bits of news that have come out over the last week, including Matt Savoie appearing at development camp, Leon Draisaitl's agent feeling confident a deal will get done, and Raphael Lavoie signing a fresh contract to stay in Edmonton. At this time of the year, there's never much going on, but that doesn't mean there wasn't plenty to talk about when it comes to the Oilers.

As I like to do when any big Oilers news comes down the pipe, I jumped in the studio for a quick 15-minute reaction episode to the trade and offered a passionate plea to Jeff Jackson to remain on as the team's GM. Given the way this dude has handled his business over the last week or so, it's almost impossible to expect any more from Jackson, and I wonder if all of this early success is changing his mind at all about whether or not he wants to remain as Edmonton's general manager.

Either way, this was a significant trade for the Oilers after what I'd consider to be one of their best free agency days ever, and I was too excited not to talk about it.
