I was driving a Volkswagen Beetle to visit with my sister in Silverstone NC, which is off Highway 421, she said. I was around 18 years old at the time. I stopped at a stop sign off 421 where my headlights were shining directly on a barn straight ahead. That’s when I saw this winged, human-like creature running alongside the front of the barn. It was around six to seven feet tall, dark, with two arms, legs, and huge wings. The creature looked like it was part bird and part man and it appeared to be wearing combat boots. Seeing this really freaked me out, so I sped away.

After this I noticed the creature was following me.I made a left turn and sped up, questioning what the heck I was seeing. I heard wings flapping, looked into my driver’s side mirror and could see this thing almost on top of my car following me. It kept up with my speed, which I would estimate at about 45 to 50 mph on a very curvy two-lane road. It followed behind and beside my vehicle for several miles.

Eventually my engine started sputtering and seemingly the battery was being drained. The headlights started dimming as I nervously rounded curves. At this point the winged thing was flying over and pretty much clinging to the driver’s side of my car. It was hitting my car and smacking into it. I didn’t understand why it was on the driver’s side hitting the car. I felt it was trying to get inside my vehicle and get to me

I don’t remember what happened immediately after this. I was out of it and came too several hours later and had gone around several curves .I don’t know why or what happened after those curves, but I was really puzzled and lost. I saw a sign that read Camp Joy and I had no clue how I got off of my normal route or how I got there.

When I got home I realized what the time was, I was puzzled even more by this. The trip that usually took about 20 minutes coming back from my sister’s took 4 hours. When I realized all of this I felt sick! To this day I’m still not sure what happened.

When I was in Middle School around 2001, my grandmother took me to the Chickamauga Battlefield in Tennessee. We did it all the time when I was a kid, I actually still like to do it! She took me to go see the battlefield and check out the caves in the battlefield and stuff. We always like going to look at them.

 I had been really upset that day because my parents had gotten divorced not too long ago and I was still kind of sad about it. My grandma had always told me that green eyes is attracted to sad stuff. We were walking, you always see stuff in the tree line and stuff when you walk around the Chickamauga battlefield for long enough, but we got to the dried up creek. We were going to look at the caves around there. When we got to the dried up creek we could see something kind of moving towards the tree line. It looked kind of skinny but looked like it kind of was made out of hay and the glowing green eyes. I'll never forget the eyes. They were like two lightning bugs. It looked up, looked at us and then he kind of just disappeared further into the forest. My grandmother told me we need to get out of here. So, we went back to the car and left. It still kind of scares me sometimes being out in the woods especially when it starts to get dark because I know that's when green eyes will come out.

I'll give a little background. I was 10 years old living in Massachusetts the year was 2006 when my grandfather died of a heart attack. I remember thinking that it was not real. Mostly because I never experienced death before that. But we ended up going to his wake and the funeral. It was an open casket wake. I saw his face, but it still did not feel real.

Fast forward one year from the day my grandfather died in April 2006. I was sleeping in my bed, when out of nowhere my hot wheels car shot through the room from my dresser. No one else was in the room, but me. To make matters worse, simultaneously I heard a commotion in my parents room. I ran over there scared. When I got to their room they were both standing over my grandfather's hat. They had hung it up on the wall after he died as a memorial for him. Apparently it had fallen despite it being hung on the wall for almost a whole year without it falling.

At that moment I knew in my heart that it was my grandfather sending a sign to us that he was there with us. Despite the fact that I loved my grandfather it did not make me feel at ease thinking he was roaming around our house moving things. After that I did not know if I should tell anyone this story because I was not sure if anyone would believe me. I have no evidence of it happening. Other than my parents possibly remembering it happening. And the idea of it happening terrified me. So I did not tell much of anyone. But now I do not care if any one believes and it has been so long to terrify anymore.

In three days it will be 17 years since he died. May he rest in peace.

Back in July of 2020, I was with my dad and we were heading back home from one of my baseball games in Logan County, West Virginia. It was around 8:00 PM. As my dad was driving us back, we saw on the right side of the road through some trees odd looking green and red type lights. It was strange because it couldn’t be a plane, it was too low to the ground to be a plane but too high in the trees to be a person. It was very strange. Never saw metal shapes or anything because the trees on the right side of the road blocked the view. I didn’t take a photo because I didn’t have a phone and we were driving. We didn't expect it and we passed it by. My dad and I always thought this was odd and might be a UFO due to the color and its height from the ground. It was also stationary. 

If this sighting wasn’t weird enough the listener that sent this one in had one more. 

This happened on April 30th, 2023 around 7:00 in the evening near Madison, West Virginia. I was with my family riding in the back seat of our car when on my left out the window I could see a faint white circle. At first I thought it was a plane but then I saw a second object, similar in shape. They were going in circles kinda like vultures do when they find a dead animal. It was a very weird experience indeed. If you look at the zoomed in photo I sent, it doesn’t really look like a drone or anything I can think of.

I don’t remember exactly where in Long Beach the apartment was because I only went to it twice, the second time only because my dad needed someone to dog sit while he was away on business. The first time I went was just after he rented the place before he actually finished moving himself, his partner and the dogs in so I could get his mail for him. While I was sitting in the dining room looking through the kitchen to the EMPTY doorway to the little laundry room when I started getting real uncomfortable so I looked away to see if I could see anything out of the front room that would explain it and when I looked back there was a bloody woman in a torn up white shift or sleeping dress based on how loosely it hung with cuts on her arms and bloody knuckles and hands and blood all over the dress hanging by a rope in the doorway to the laundry room. Scared me so badly, but more than that filled me with an overwhelming sense of sadness and depression I almost started crying. It spooked me enough that I tried to forget it so I never took the time to look up if anything happened there to explain it. The other time I went a couple years later I got drunk the couple nights I had to stay there so I don’t remember exactly how uncomfortable it may have made me.

On a whim one summer night in 2008, my friend and I went exploring the TNT area in Pt. Pleasant . We've checked out the accessible igloos many times, only three of which were actually opened, but he wanted to show me some pallets, drums, and other debris that had recently been placed in front of a few of the privately owned igloos, which were located down a different trail than the one that held the open igloos...

Thursday the 2nd Nov. 2006, my son and I were heading to Ravenswood (not too far from Point Pleasant).

It was just before 5 PM and it was starting to become dusk. On my side of the road, I saw an extremely tall human-like figure literally jump/float straight up from the ground to the top of the trees. There are no houses near there, just trees and some empty land behind. I felt no fear, just a feeling of “Wow, what the hell was that thing?” I mentioned it to my son a couple of minutes

later when we neared town but did not tell him exactly where I had seen it. He told me he had seen it as well, but we both had stayed silent because of some other weird things that had been happening lately at our home...we were spooked enough as it was.

I had not stopped to turn around because I was in a hurry to get somewhere before a certain time. On our way home, maybe 75-100 ft further down the road from the original site, both my son and I saw the figure again. He was moving upward in the branches of the trees. Yesterday (Friday Nov 3 2006) right before dark, my son saw it again, outside near a small patch of woods. My son noted red eyes during this second sighting.

After some research, I knew what we had seen was Mothman!

I had been to Edinburgh Manor once already by the time this happened, but it’s definitely purportedly haunted. When this happened, I had just finished walking around on my own during a tour and just went up to the front of the building and was small talking with the guide and we realized we had a lot in common. She invited me to do the last round with her, to make sure no one was left in the building. We had cleared the lower and main level already and started up to the second floor. We were just messing around and joking and I noticed my camera started acting funny. We had gotten to the top of the stairs, turned left and we’re kind of poking fun at the building and I said, “with how purportedly haunted this place is, I’m astonished I haven’t gotten any activity”. Not 10 seconds later we were walking down the hallway and this 3” thick solid wood utility door (hinges on one side and latched on the other) came off the hinges and flew straight at us and hit both me, the guide and her dog pretty hard - she got a bad bruise from it and it broke a mirror. I’ve been to my fair share of haunted locations, but I’ve never seen anything remotely close to what happened here.

Thanks to our listener that sent in this story. I think a big door is one of the larger objects I’ve heard someone say they had thrown at them. She sent a few photos of the door and it’s one of those old judge wooden types. This was definitely an interesting story!

Back in 2013, I’d moved to the town of Lawrence, Kansas - a borderline oasis compared to the nothing that surrounds it. I was being housed by a family of a friend I’d made there, so I was quick to join them in things like household chores and weekly excursions. Every Wednesday, they went to church, so I usually tagged along as a sign of good faith.

Not that Wednesday. That night, I had one of the worst migraines of my life. It was straight to bed, head under the covers, plus a pillow for good measure...

There were several sightings of these creatures in South West Virginia, one of the more famous took place in 1994. A woman from Ohio was driving through South West Virginia and the Roanoke area one stormy night on her way to the Outer Banks in North Carolina. She was delayed a bit having to take a detour through a two lane road south of Roanoke Virginia. She described the area as being very dark and remote. The time was about 2:30 in the morning when suddenly a creature leapt across the road and in front of her car. The creature then walked off not seeming to notice the woman or her car.

She described the creature as a monkey-wolf hybrid type creature. It was covered with short sleek black fur. It stood on its hind legs at about 6 feet tall, and had pointy ears, a flat snout, and a long thin tail. She also noted that it was also very muscular and thin.

Shortly after this sighting stories of missing pets and livestock began, along with more sightings of the creature in the area. A few weeks after this incident a couple in nearby Shawsville reported seeing a creature on their property one night and noted their German Shepherd had gone missing after.

Overall this was an interesting find, I had never heard of this but I was not living in the area at this time. It’s also possible I may have been too young to remember even if I had heard of something. I looked into the Devil Monkeys a bit while writing this story and found reports of it spanning all over the US as well as British Columbia. Explanations for the creature include anything from an escaped zoo animal to a large thought-to-be-extinct form of baboon.

Me and my cousin Marcos were in the Point Pleasant West Virginia area visiting family. While we were driving down Redmond ridge road at around 9:30ish at night sometime around Christmas, we passed a human-like figure as we slowed down. We looked out our rear view mirror where we saw a large figure, that was 6.5-7ft tall. As me and my cousin rolled down the window to ask if ”everything was alright” all of a sudden our reverse light caught a glimpse of large beaming eyes looking our way. My cousin told me to “floor it”out of there. 

We took off down the road and after going down the road a few minutes everything seemed normal. Until a few minutes later when everything had calmed down, my cousin Marcos looked to the right and noticed a large creature flying almost directly over us. We were going about 30 mph and stepped on the gas as we hit speeds of 45-50mph the creature was still following us with ease. With the windy backroads It was pretty hard to go much faster. 

After about 2 minutes of trying to outrun the human-like creature we got on county route 17/5. At that point there was no one behind us. I have never known about this creature until I went to visit your community. I’m not sure if I’m crazy and my eyes were seeing things but I would like to know if anyone else had experienced such things. Or if I saw the “moth man” or I was just seeing things.

This was a pretty interesting story, had seen a few things online about people still seeing the creature around Point Pleasant and the TNT area, but this is the first story we’ve received on it. We would love to get more like it!

After seeing your video on the Randolph House I decided to reach out about an encounter my mother had while working there in the 90s. According to her, that place is definitely haunted.

 My mother was the only medical technician at the hospital. She worked there for many years and saw a lot of strange stuff but one story always stood out to me. The top floor of the facility was used as storage, my mother would often get sent up there to get something. She usually would take the elevator to go up there since it was easier to carry things back down that way. One night she went up to get something, and when she got back on the elevator there was a woman on it. At the time it didn’t occur to her that she would have had to have seen the woman get on the elevator since it never left the top floor. The woman would have had to have been in the room she just stepped off into. They went back down to the first floor, the lady never said anything. My mother told her to have a good night and got off the elevator. She started to walk around the corner and that’s when it hit her. There was no way the lady could have gotten on the elevator. My mother then turned back around and walked back to the elevator. The elevator was empty! She then looked around, and didn’t see the lady. There was nowhere she could have walked off too without going by my mother since it’s a straight hall. 

My mother then asked some of the other staff that were on that floor working at the desk if they saw the woman get off the elevator. That’s when they told her that people have been seeing that woman on the elevator for many years. People don’t know if she’s someone who worked there, a patient or what. My mother never thought the spirit was evil or anything, but I think what happened has always spooked her.

This happened early one dark and rainy morning during the COVID lockdown of 2020. I can’t remember when it was exactly, I know it was still cold out and near the beginning of the lockdown. There was an emergency at work that I had to drive into work for. Because I had been working from home for a few weeks and had not been out in a while.

While driving, I never saw a single car, likely because of the lockdown. I was stopped at a stop light when out of the corner of my eye, I saw a woman in a paper-thin-looking dress walking down the street and into the park.I remember thinking, "Well, that's odd." It was cold, rainy and still dark outside. So a woman in a thin dress with no jacket did not make much sense.

I looked up at the light again, still red. Then I looked back for the lady and she had vanished. I could still see further ahead of where she had been, and there was no trace of her. I kept driving, and later it dawned on me that I should have gotten my phone out and recorded it. It would have been a cool thing to capture.

There you have it, one of my own stories. I’ve had a few others that I may share over time, but this one was definitely pretty interesting and the most recent. Let me know what you think of it, and hopefully it encourages more folks to share their stories.

When the Mothman Museum was in its original location in the early 2000s, myself, an employee and my grandfather had a strange encounter. A Young guy, Mid 20's, wearing sunglasses, a black suit, tie and shoes entered the museum and began asking questions about the Point Pleasant Mothman and UFO sightings while referencing the movie "The Cell" . As the questions continued I began to get more and more creeped out until I finally called for our other employee who was working in the back. The guy eventually began to wrap up his strange interrogation of us when my grandfather entered the museum, but before our visitor left the museum he asked if we had "Any complimentary tobacco products or Licorice?". We explained to him, no we did not, and he left. Once he was out of the museum my grandfather asked if any of us had noticed how strange his shoes were. My grandfather described them as "having thick soles, 2 1/2 to 3 inches thick".

The person who sent me this story mentioned that they get all kinds of odd visitors. I’ve seen a lot of weird things myself when I’ve gone in. They mentioned that this experience has always stuck out to them. Especially the part where they asked for complimentary tobacco products or Licorice. It’s like the guy didn’t know what year it was.

Kerrie Kisner hadn’t intended to stop at the Triangle Town Center mall on her way home from Wake Tech Community College near Raleigh, North Carolina, but she did. She wished she hadn’t. 

“There were very few people there that day and I found it strangely eerie how quiet it was,” Kisner, 20, said. “While walking back to my car I rounded a corner and saw an older lady and a young boy. He immediately caught my attention because he was so odd looking, I had never seen anyone like him.” 

The boy, about twelve years old, seemed average at first, but as Kisner watched him talk with the woman, he seemed anything but average. The boy’s black hair contrasted sharply with his pale skin; dark patches hung under his eyes. 

“It looked like he hadn't slept in weeks,” Kisner said. “He had a very thin face.”As Kisner walked closer to the pair, she heard their conversation. In a quiet, but strong voice, the boy asked the woman for help. 

“He stood very rigid with his hands by his sides looking at the ground as she fished around in her purse for something to give to him,” Kisner said. “As I got closer I noticed he seemed to get more and more uncomfortable.”

The boy began to shift his body when Kisner passed them on her way to her car, then he lifted his head and made eye contact with her. “I froze. His eyes were black as night, very dull, almost dead,” Kisner said. “The look he gave me has haunted me. The feeling I got from him was as though he wasn't all there, almost ghostly.”

Eyes locked on Kisner’s, the boy turned slowly and, not waiting for the older woman to give him what she dug for in her purse, simply walked away. Kisner doesn’t know who, or what the boy was, but this memory will stick with her forever. “Ever since then the look he gave me has haunted me,” she said. “Almost like he knew what I had been thinking.”

One hot July day 1968 a young man by the name of Jennings Fredrick who was around 19 years old at the time, had gone woodchuck hunting near his home in Fairmont West Virginia. He hadn't had much luck and was about to head home, when he heard a strange high pitched sound like that of a sped-up recording. A voice reportedly said to him “You need not fear me. I wish to communicate. I come as a friend. We know of you all. I come in peace. I wish for medical assistance. I need your help.”

He then saw a green skeletal stalk-like creature, it was about 6-7 feet tall with slanted yellow eyes. It had human-like facial features, and long vine-like arms that were no wider than a quarter. Its fingers had suction cups on the end of them.

Before he could move, he felt a vine wrap around him. Then what felt like a needle stuck into his arm. He could not get away, the creature had him in some type of trance-like paralysis state.All he could do is look at the creature whose eyes had turned from red to yellow as it sucked blood from Jennings’s arm. Once the creature finished, then walked off out of sight. Jennings then heard an odd humming sound and thought it might be a craft taking off.

Jennings recovered from the trance-like state and went home. He did not tell his family of the event. Months later he did tell the story to a UFO researcher from West Virginia named Gray Barker. Gray dubbed the creature “Vegetable Man”

I had heard this story a few times over the years and thought this was it but I later found out while reading a post on Appalachian Oddity that there is actually more to this strange tale. Included are accounts of two more stories to this larger one from Appalachian Oddity.

I was walking through the forest one summer evening in Southern Arkansas.  I had gotten into a small gully when I saw what I thought was a bear.  I wasn't sure though it looked very, very humanoid.  "Maybe a deformed bear?" I thought... nope! I left a sandwich I was carrying with me on a rock and backed away.    When the thing turned around, it was quite human looking! It was about 7-8 feet tall, and had dark brown fur and was extremely bulky looking. It took the sandwich, and walked off ignoring me. As it walked off it bumped into a small tree and knocked it over, it must have been incredibly strong!

I was a little kid at this time, probably 11 years old. I have no proof and no one believed me. But I know a dang bear and that could not have been a bear! I have spent my life in these forests and never seen anything like that before!!

It started in July 2022 when we went up to the West Virginia state prison for a reptile show. We were maybe 2 hours away from Point Pleasant and thought it would only add an hour onto the drive back home so we figured we would drop by. On the drive I started to get a headache. I thought it was maybe because I was tired but the closer we got the worse it got. As soon as we got through the floodgates of the town I had a feeling in my stomach like going down the first drop on a roller coaster.

Eventually I felt better but fast forward a few months I was walking to work early one morning one morning right before Halloween. It was still dark around 6:00 AM when I saw red circles in a tree and felt a feeling of dread. I thought maybe it was some Halloween decorations, but I checked the next day on my way to work and there were no red lights there.They haven’t been there since. Then about a month after my dad passed so maybe it was or wasn’t just a coincidence, but a warning. 

Thank you for sending in this story. We’re really sorry to hear about your father. You have our condolences. That’s a pretty crazy chain of events that happened. As you all know I’ve been to Point Pleasant many times, I’ve never felt anything going there. It actually feels normal to me to be there. Maybe the person you're sensitive to these types of things? Then there were the red eyes coming from up in a tree. That’s a bit spooky, I guess it could have been an owl or a racoon? But that doesn’t explain the feeling of dread. Then a month later there was the passing of their father. Maybe it was an omen as some say?

This melancholy extends beyond its appearance, and it is said that the poor animal weeps constantly. Tryon notes that “He is given to constant weeping over his really upsetting appearance, and can sometimes be tracked by his tear-stained trail”. Cox corroborates this, noting that hunters are often able to follow the squonk by its tear-stained trail, and Tryon notes that these squonk hunts are best performed by moonlight. The squonk is not without its defenses though, as when surprised or frightened, it can dissolve itself into a puddle of tears to escape capture.

Records of the squonk mainly come from the hemlock forests of Pennsylvania. They make their home in these hemlocks, and are active only during the twilight hours, returning to their hemlocks before moonrise, where they can avoid catching a glimpse of their reflection in a moonlit pool, an event that will often bring the squonk to tears. The ancient distribution of the squonk was thought to be much wider, but as the high plains where it roamed gradually turned into swamps, it was forced to try to adapt to water. Between the squonk’s limited cognitive abilities, and the fact that it only evolved webbing on its left feet, it found itself unable to swim, merely going in circles when it tried to enter the water. It finds its hemlock homes of today much more suitable.

I was with my group on an investigation at St Albans, I was watching the monitors with the group and two of the ladies came back from where they were supposed to be. I was sitting there watching them on the camera and heard them coming down the hallway. This struck me as very odd since they hadn’t moved. They were still in the room where they were supposed to be. At the same time they came up and looked at me and said “I’ve seen people”, then they turned around and walked back. There were 3 other people in our group that witnessed this. I can’t really explain what happened but it was incredibly freaky! We are pretty sure they were doppelgangers.

For those unfamiliar with the phenomenon, doppelgangers appear in the paranormal folklore quite often. Hi my name is Scott, this story took place around Thanksgiving of 2019. I was turkey hunting on my friend's land in Floyd County. It was sometime around 6:00 in the morning, I came up on a group of turkeys in the woods. Keep in mind this is about a mile out in the middle of nowhere in a forest not a soul around and still a little dark. I shot at one of the turkeys and hit it, it fell down dead, the other ones took off. That’s when I heard this god awful screeching sound .I turned and looked in the direction the sound came from up in an old oak tree stood a dark brown figure. It looks like a cross between a bird and a man. It was maybe 7 feet tall, with huge wings and what looked like yellow or red glowing eyes. 

About as soon as I saw it, it leapt up out of the tree and flew off headed north. Was it after the group of turkeys? I grabbed the one I shot and booked it out of there. I had no idea what that thing was but knew I just wanted to get home.

Fast forward a few months and it’s the COVID lockdown. I’m watching a documentary on The Mothman on the Travel Channel. The creature they described sure does sound a lot like what I saw! We also ain’t that far from West Virginia. I also saw that The Mothman shows up when something bad is about to happen. Could this have been related to the COVID outbreaks?

That is something to think about, perhaps Mothman was trying to warn us of the coming COVID outbreak. We did receive another Mothman sighting from 2019, but it was in Michigan. Some time in fall of 2020, I almost ran face first into myself from about 5 minutes earlier. I was fully awake and had just showered then got dressed for work. I was on my way back to the bathroom to fix my hair and brush my teeth. As I stepped into the hallway, literally ME - stepped out of the bathroom. I ran almost directly into myself. It obviously scared the crap out of me. I jumped back then screamed. I jumped back hard enough that I physically hit the wall. The copy of myself was wrapped in a towel like I had been just a few minutes before. The copy of me disappeared as quickly as it appeared and the whole interaction lasted about a second or two.

I've always had weird experiences following me. I first went ghost hunting in late middle school and early high school. I also grew up hearing stories about paranormal happenings in my family's past. So,  interest in it has always kinda been around. I had a number of paranormal events happen throughout my life - starting in middle school and still happening occasionally. I would be very interested to find others that have had the same "nearly run into doppelganger " experience. I did some digging around online around the time it happened, but never really found anything close.

The King’s Bend Tunnel is located in Wetzel County, West Virginia. Also known as Porters Falls No .1 Tunnel. The tunnel is used as a shortcut between Clarksburg, West Virginia and the Ohio river. The tunnel got its name due to its adjacent location from the giant bend in the creek near it called “King’s Bend”.

Over the years there have been many deaths either in or around the tunnel. Starting with the workers who built the tunnel, all the way up to present day tunnel walkers. Because the tunnels are built with a slight curve it's impossible to reach the end of the tunnel from either opening and sound echoes in a way that makes trains seem much further away, which has led to several accidents happening to foot travelers over the years.

There have been several reports of phantom footsteps echoing from inside the mines, or the sounds of workers working away to complete the tunnel, but most stories involve the 'Coffin holes'. The holes are cut into the sides of the tunnel roughly 6 feet tall and 2-3 feet wide meant to accommodate anyone stuck in the tunnel with an oncoming train. People have reported hearing knocking and groans coming from behind the holes. Similar to Tommyknockers in mines.

Perhaps one of the more interesting tales comes from a group of friends who camped out at the area for an overnight fishing trip. The area is well known for brewing a good fishing spot. While doing some night time fishing the group would hear a loud whooshing sound each time they turned out their spotlight accompanied by large ripples in the water. 

After returning to the campsite near the tunnel the group began hearing voices echoing off the hillside. At first the group wasn’t alarmed by this and brushed it off as just some people racoon hunting. However, the voices kept getting closer until it sounded like they were practically on top of the group. They could now hear the voices clear as day saying things like, “What are they doing here?” and “They need to leave” then “You shouldn’t be here…”

At this point the group decided to hightail it out of there and head back to their ATVs. Then they saw something that made them freeze in their tracks, standing beside one of the ATVs under a tree was the outline of a tall man in what looked like a hat. No details of the figure could be seen, just blackness. It looked distorted and twisted. After about half a minute the figure darted back to the tunnel, and the group booked it out of there.

To this day trains still run through the tunnel, and not only is it a safety hazard it’s also illegal to enter. Many folks have lost their lives in and around the tunnel. Overall this area sounds really interesting and there are a few other creepy tunnels in the area similar to this one.

When I was a kid, my family and I went to visit a relative’s home on Christmas Eve to open presents. This was in West Virginia, in the late 2000’s I think, and I remember it being dark at the time. On the way to our destination we were driving past what looked like a natural slope between two mountains by the roadside. This spot was also near a railroad crossing. We saw three large red floating lights and at first thought it was a new cell tower.

Then the lights began moving ever so slightly and we saw that they weren’t attached to anything. My father pulled the car over and we all stared at the lights for a while trying to figure out what they were as they hovered gently back and forth over the same spot between the mountains. We could see now that it wasn’t a cell phone tower but none of us at the time jumped to the idea of it being a “UFO.” We still thought it might be part of the landscape or something.

We resolved to check again on our way home to see if it was still there and headed off to my relative’s home for Christmas Eve. Of course, on the way back, the three red lights were completely gone. Therefore it couldn’t have been part of the hillside, it was most likely something flying, though it could still be something explainable in an ordinary way.

It was only years later, after my interest in anomalies, that I was reminded of this when my family mentioned going to see that same relative for Christmas. For the longest time, I held off on telling the story, thinking “it doesn’t count” but when compared to most UFO reports, I’m pretty sure it counts just as much as those do.

Our first story occurred on a rainy Wednesday night on November 2nd 1966. A salesman named Woodrow Derenberger was driving home to Mineral Wells, West Virginia from Marietta, Ohio. At around 7:25PM, Woodrow claims that on the intersection of 77 and route 47 he spotted a strange dark gray craft, about 30 to 35 feet long and hovering about 10 inches above the ground. It passed him, then swerved in front of him blocking his path and forced him to stop. The craft had no windows or lights on it, it was charcoal colored and glistened when hit by Woodrow’s headlights.

Soon after landing a figure looking like a normal human male stepped out of a door of the craft. He had dark combed back hair, deeply tanned skin, and looked to be about 35-40 in age. He wore a blue zippered overcoat made of a shiny reflective material with a dark blue button shirt underneath and navy colored pants. The man approached Woodrow’s right side of Woodrow’s car and spoke to him telepathically asking him to roll down his window. He did so, and the craft reportedly lifted off and covered about 50 feet in the air.

At this point the man smiled politely and crossed his arms then asked him many questions telepathically, while maintaining his smile and standing in the rain. Woodrow said that the man asked him many questions, such as who he was and where he lived. Woodrow said that he felt frightened but the man said not to be afraid. The man told Woodrow that his name was Cold and seemed to want to know more about the human race. He later revealed that he was from the planet Lanulos in the Galaxy of Ganymede.

After their conversation, the craft landed and Cold walked back to it. Before entering the door, Cold informed Woodrow that he would visit him again and he did, many times over the years. Woodrow even wrote a book about his experiences “Visitors From Lanulos” It was in a later visit that Cold let Woodrow know his full name of Indrid Cold. 

Our second possible sighting occurred in Point Pleasant, West Virginia around the same time as the first sighting. The Lilly family had been reporting poltergeist activity in their home. They had also been seeing diamond shaped lights in the skies at night over their home. One night their daughter Linda woke from sleeping to a man standing over her. This is what Linda had to say about the encounter. "It was a man, a big man. Very broad. I couldn't see his face very well, but I could see that he was grinning at me. He walked around the bed and stood right over me. I screamed again and hid under the covers, when I looked again he was gone."

In early November of 1966, an elderly man reported a similar sighting to the first to Mary Hyre’s newspaper office in Point Pleasant. He claimed he and another workmen were driving home to Point Pleasant from their jobsite in Marietta Ohio. When they got near Parkersburg West Virginia on interstate 77 an elongated object appeared in the sky and descended directly in front of them, forcing them to stop their car. Soon after a normal looking man emerged from the craft. The man driving the car rolled down his window in disbelief, and the strange man approached them. He wore a black jacket, and kept a smile on his face with his arms crossed, hands hidden under his armpits just like Woodrow reported. The stranger asked who they were, where they were from, where they were going, and what time it was. He then strolled back to the dark cylinder and it rose quickly into the chill, drizzling sky.

This first sighting occurred around 9:00 PM at night, back in October. The gentleman was alone sitting in the street waiting for his wife. He said that he started to feel uneasy, he looked up and there was a figure standing in the darkness down the street from him. He looked away for a second and then it was gone when he looked back. After this he decided to stand up to go see what it was, and that’s when two dogs came charging towards him looking like they were going to attack him.

When the dogs got about two meters away the dogs stopped in their tracks, then turned and ran the other way as if something scared them off. That’s when he saw the thing standing directly in front of him. It opened its wings up and took off into the sky. It looked like a cross between a bird and a man, it looked dark brown colored. 

The second sighting took place on December 23rd 2022. This one was sent over by the gentleman’s wife. They were walking over to a shop near their house at about 8:00PM to buy a few things when a truck with two people in the back of it stopped. They noticed that the two in the truck were looking up at something. The lady said she began to feel a feeling of dread and looked up, that’s when she noticed what she described as a creature looking like what her husband had described to her previously. A large bird-like man, with a giant wingspan. It was in the air flying in circles above them.

At this point they decided to turn around and head home. Along the way they looked back a few times and noticed it was still flying in the same spot.. They swore to each other that they would not be going back outside under any circumstances for the rest of the night.

This pair of sightings is obviously different in some ways than our usual encounters. They saw one of our Mothman stories on our new “Mothman Sightings” Facebook group and thought it sounded like what they saw and decided to reach out to me. Even though this story isn't exactly Appalachian, Mothman encounters are always welcome!I thought it was interesting that the gentleman thought the creature felt like it was a protector, and his wife in the second case reported that she felt a feeling of dread and that it felt evil.

I’m really excited to get our first Mothman sighting in from another country and our first submission from that part of the world! I hope we get more in the future. Thank you both for sending in these sightings!

My spooky story that got us started on our journey with the paranormal and eventually helping others with theirs. About 17 years ago, maybe a little more, I was sitting in the middle of my queen size bed cross-legged. I was dozing out and I felt two "hands" shove me with such force I flew off the bed into my dresser. It was such an extreme force though. I also remember the "hands" had either really long, pointy nails or claws that's why I put hands in quotes. I had to get nine staples in my head and had a slight concussion!! There had been many happenings before that but never to me. My husband and daughter always told me they saw things and my husband has a video of a shadow figure darker than the dark peeking out at him and then ducking back. I had never had anything happen to me up until that point and in my head I kind of thought it was bs. Well it wanted my attention apparently and sure got it!! After that we had many scary experiences and moved twice and it always followed us. It would come into bed in between my husband and I, with me holding him!!! He asked me if I was fondling him and I said how?? My arm is around your waist and the other one I was laying on! This thing was very intimate acting with my husband and I only know of one thing that does that and it's not human. We have had blessings, cleansings, even an exorcism done on my husband! Not a Vatican approved one of course because that is a huge process in itself. I could go on forever about our experiences but I would fill your whole dam. Take care!!

I saw your video and story of this haunted trestle just now on YouTube and I found it very interesting! I had never heard of this and have lived in Radford since 2003. I found your videos when looking around on google after seeing something strange on a walk in the same area on Saturday, September 10th, 2022.

It was later on in the evening, the sun was starting to go down around 7:00 PM. I was on a dog walk on that new trial next to the dog park with a friend of mine. I had just passed the trestle when I saw something move out of the corner of my eye. I turned and looked, so did my friend, then we looked at each other. My friend asked how the lady walking the other direction got behind us. There was a lady walking towards the trestle in a long white dress, we had no idea how she got behind us we never saw anyone. The area there is flat, you could probably see someone coming almost a mile away. We both shrugged and kept walking. I turned back around after about 30 seconds and she was gone! We both thought this was very strange!

After looking this up and seeing if there were any deaths in the area, or buildings that had been torn down, I found your video. I took a look around and really enjoyed your stories, especially that one on The Black Sisters, Keep up the good work! - Amy

I was a long haul trucker for many years. In December of 2004, I had a delivery in Winchester, Virginia and a second stop in Washington, D.C. At my first stop I was delayed and didn't get unloaded until after 2:00 AM. I left Winchester heading east on Highway 7. Around 2:30 I came to the intersection of Highway & and Route 601 near Bluemont. At a gas station, I pulled in to check my map of Washington in anticipation of my delivery. The station was closed at that hour. There was virtually no traffic going by and it was a cold, moonless night. While I was sitting there, someone knocked on my door, startling me. I jumped and turned off my interior light so I could see outside and rolled down my window.

A man was standing there in an airline flight crew uniform. He had four stripes on his shoulder epaulets indicating a Captain. He was without a jacket on a very cold morning. He climbed up on the step of my cab. He smelled like he had bathed in kerosene. When he got close to my face, I could see that his cap had the TWA insignia on it.

"Could you give me a lift?" he asked in a voice that seemed raspy...

I hope you all enjoyed this story as much as I have. It kind of reminds me of the phantom hitchhiker stories.Everything about this story just creeps me out. The fact that it took place near the crash site, the pilot being from the discontinued airline service and wearing a short sleeve uniform on a chilly day!

A report from an Ohio man who was given the pseudonym “Noetic” told of a strange encounter in July 2010 with two black-eyed teenagers outside the data center where he worked. Noetic was taking a break during his night shift and was smoking a cigarette outside the building at around 5:00 AM when he noticed two teenage boys across the street from his building. He felt immediately unnerved as soon as he noticed them, perhaps because they appeared to be staring straight at him but were otherwise motionless.

He quickly finished his cigarette and went back inside the building and back to work. Around 10 minutes later, however, the intercom from the front door buzzed, and as Noetic turned to observe the monitors, he could see that it was the two boys who had been staring him down earlier. He pressed the talk button and asked what they wanted, stating he was busy. Neither of the boys spoke, but one of them motioned to the camera for him to come outside. He pressed the talk button again, told them they would have to leave, and then went back to work.

The two boys continued to stare into the camera as though they were looking through the TV monitor into the room where he worked. After another 10 minutes or so, Noetic decided to go to the front door and ask the boys to leave and to let him get on with his job. Before he opened the door, however, he sneaked a look at the two boys through the one-way glass. They looked normal enough, apart from the fact that they had completely black eyes. This made him feel even more on edge, but he decided to open the door anyway and tell the boys to leave or he would have to call the police.

 As soon as he opened the door, one of the boys said to him as if he had been reading his mind, “That will not be necessary sir, we simply need to use your phone, can you let us in?” Noetic declined, saying that nobody was allowed in. The boys asked again to be invited into the building and then stood there staring at the now distressed man. Noetic pulled out his mobile phone, repeating his threat to call the police and pulled the door shut again.He went back to observe the pair from the safety of the monitor. One boy remained at the door and stared into the camera, while the other boy made his way to the back of the building and stared into the camera there. 

Noetic called the police, all the while watching his monitors. The boys made their way to a “blind spot” on the system’s security cameras, but while Noetic waited for them to reappear on one of his monitors, they seemed to have simply vanished. By the time the police did arrive at around 6:00 AM, there was no sign of either of the two strange teenagers.

Hey I saw your post about unexplained phenomena. A new hotel has recently opened in Roanoke in the building of a former business. Since I've been working there, me and a few of my coworkers have experienced some very strange stuff inside the building. I d We've been wanting to get someone in there to ghost hunt but again not sure how the owners would feel about it.

I've had several things happen to me and I'll just tell you what I've experienced. I'll chat with coworkers later to see if they're willing to share what they've experienced. I am always seeing movement out of the corner of my eyes. I've had a female voice say, "hey" as I've stepped off the elevator and I was the only person in the lobby. I've also been cleaning, again, alone in the lobby and while I was cleaning and whistling something from the back of the lobby whistled back at me. I've had doors open by themselves. We've also had 2 separate guests check out early because they claimed that it felt like something crawled into bed with them. One guest said that something crawled into bed and snuggled up behind them and another guest said that something crawled into bed and then they said it felt like it grabbed their wrists and started shaking them and said can you hear me. I've also had a motion sensored water fountain turn on and run by itself for about 30-40 seconds.

I will say one coworker had told me that she had actually seen a figure standing down in the lobby wearing older 1800s-1900s attire. There one minute and gone the next.

This story is about my third or fourth great grandfather, his oldest brother who I will be calling Richard for the rest of this story, and his youngest brother John. (That's not their names but that's what I’m going to call them for simplicity and anonymity’s sake.) 

My family has lived in what's now West Virginia since shortly after the American Revolution. This story takes place in the 1820’s or 30’s. Richard, his brothers, and sisters lived in a holler and over a hill in another hollar all their cousins and their cousin’s families lived...

You know the video I made on Sweet Hollow Road?  People described what they saw in the area and I think it was a mothman in those woods there. I had never heard of Mothman till seeing some of your videos on it and thought this may be a story you can use. When I was doing the research about Sweat Hollow, there was a group of paranormal investigators I found who were also investigating the area. The three of them were looking for the lady in white in the woods. They said their equipment picked up words: get out, leave, go, go now. They said let's listen and go. On the way out of the woods, they all saw something and ran out real fast. When they got out of the woods, they looked at each other and just got in the car. On the way back they didn’t speak, they were so chilled. They ended up drawing what they saw for each other and didn’t know what it was. I ended up seeing it and realized it was probably Mothman after seeing your videos. It was a large dark brown creature that looked like a half man, half bird with dark red eyes.

I witnessed a UFO on Orange Ave along with several other people in 1997. I was working across from the E.J. Thomas market at what used to be Eagle Rentco. What I saw was a disk object shaped and moving slowly under the cloud layer. It was metallic like hot brushed brass. Had a halo around it and in a trail behind it like heat distortion off a hot car roof. Moved with a skipping or staggered motion. Not in a straight line like an airplane. About 3 to 4 thousand altitude. Looked roughly 100ft in diameter. Speed was about the same as a small private plane. Moved from west to east. No detailed features, only smooth metallic. I watched it move for about 2-3 minutes then it vanished after going behind a small cloud.

A young resident of Heaters West Virginia, Audra Harper and her friend, who we will call “Betsy”, were walking to the general store at Falls Mill one evening in early September, 1952. About half way into their trip through a field between their home and their destination, Audra and Betsy noticed a fire in the distance on one of the hills they were passing. Harper dismissed it, assuming that one of her neighbors was “fox chasing”. When she glanced back, she saw something unbelievable - the fire had vanished. In the place where the fire had been stood the tall and dark silhouette of a 9 - 10 foot tall man-shaped figure. Terrified, the girls ran but the figure followed them for roughly a third of a mile. After crossing through a gate at the end of a clearing in the forest, the figure appeared to stop and not come any closer. After getting to their destination, the women found a man with a truck at a near-by bar who offered to take them home. Audra never walked that short-cut to the store again!

This happened around the time I first started volunteering at ST Albans, it was Halloween night and I was working at the haunted house attraction. I was stationed in the second floor hallway in a ghost costume and when people would come, I would jump out and scream at them to try and scare them. That night one of my daughters told me she was going to be coming with her new boyfriend who I had never met. She said he has been talking a lot of smack and he’s one of those people that stuff doesn’t scare him and she asked if I could get him good. 

They made it in to me about 30 minutes till close, I know it’s them because I hear my daughter giggling so I get myself ready. I’m hiding in the room, looking out through a hole waiting. I see two young men, my daughter and another girl start to go by. I stuck my head out the hole in the wall and went… BLLAAAHHH to scare them, then chased them down the hall. I decided to focus on going after the two young men knowing one of them was my daughter’s boyfriend so I didn’t pay much attention to the two girls. I must have done a good job because they both screeched like little girls! They ran down the hall to where my partner directed them down the stairwell. As they were going down the stairwell I walked down to my partner to point out who my daughter was. I said that it's her not the quiet one but the one that’s laughing like a fool. I turned around to go back down the hall and my daughter then came up and hugged me. Then said you got him good momma! The girl was still behind her so I waved at her and introduced myself. The girl for some reason looked like she was bored to death. She looked like an average middle school girl, wearing jeans and a hoodie. Kind of pouty looking. 

A few days later I talked to my daughter , I asked if they liked the event and if they had a good time. She explained that they did. So then I asked about the girl she had with her. I asked if she had any fun at all and said she looked bored. My daughter then said what girl? I said I guess it was the other guy's girlfriend? Then my daughter said mom… there wasn’t anyone else with us and it was just the 3 of them. My daughter and the two guys. I know I saw this girl, I know she was there. To this day I still double check when I look at groups and wonder.

I live in Greenup County, Kentucky, this happened on Thursday September 29th around 6:00 PM. I was outside in the front yard standing there looking over the top of the house because I saw some birds and that’s when I noticed this white object in the sky. It was moving pretty fast and it was not shaped like any aircraft I've ever seen and it had no sound to it. After watching the object for a few minutes, it just vanished. If I was not looking over top of the house I would have never seen it. It was really weird. I don't know what I saw but I know it was not an airplane or helicopter. I would say that the object is pill shaped. I managed to snap a photo and some video of it that I’ve sent along with this story.

The Town of Point Pleasant was first settled in 1774 along the banks of the Ohio and Kanawha rivers, but wasn’t officially chartered just yet. Not long after this on October 10, 1774 the Battle of Point Pleasant occurred between the Shawnee Chief Cornstalk and General Andew Lewis.

In 1777, Chief Cornstalk and his son traveled to Fort Randolph to discuss peace between their tribes and the settlers, but they were captured and killed. It is believed that Chief Cornstalk laid a curse upon the land as he was slain. Then, finally, in 1804 Mason County split off from Kanawha County, and the city officially became Point Pleasant.

A lot of people believe that the paranormal happenings centered around Point Pleasant happen due to the curse of Chief Cornstalk. If you’ve ever spent some time around Point Pleasant residents you’ll notice when something goes wrong they jokingly say “there’s that Chief Cornstalk Curse again” We’ll mention a few of the paranormal happenings but wont go into great detail on them since we’ve already done stories on a good number of them, or plan to in the future.

One of the earliest paranormal stories we’ve found are on The Mason County Ghost Lights. The Ghost Lights showed up around 1810. People report seeing what looks like a lantern bobbing up and down in a particular area.

Possibly the next paranormal happenings in town could be from the Lowe Hotel. It’s hard to say when the hauntings reported there started, but the hotel was opened in 1901. Guests have reported seeing apparitions, as well as seeing shadow and yearning strange sounds that can’t be explained.

After that would be the UFO stories that may have started in 1931 with the Phantom Blimp Crash. Then there were the Mothman sightings and a huge uptick in UFO sightings. Between 1966-1967 there were hundreds of UFO and Mothman sights in the area. For the most part this seemed to slow down when the Silver Bridge collapsed in 1967, but some folks say the UFOs and Mothman are still around.

That pretty much sums up the paranormal occurrences, that aside Point Pleasant West Virginia is a fun place to visit and is a town that fully embraces their paranormal culture. There are many great places to visit, including The World's Only Mothman Museum and their sister store The Point Pleasant Trading Company. The Mothman Museum is also working to complete The Mothman themed escape room, and also starting an indoor cryptid themed mini golf course! Some other places to check out are The Tu-Endie-Wei State park where the Battle of Point Pleasant Happened, The TNT Area where most of The Mothman sightings occurred, and many of the locally owned restaurants where you can get Mothman themed foods.

The structure now known as St. Albans Sanatorium began life as St. Albans Lutheran Boys School in 1892. The school operated first under headmaster George W. Miles and then Winslow H. Randolph. It was a prestigious preparatory school in the area, however, bullying was reportedly rampant, and there were rumors that several students lost their lives. St. Albans closed in 1904, and the building sat vacant until 1916, when Dr. J.C. King converted the property into St. Albans Sanatorium.

Dr. King was a forward-thinking psychologist for the time, emphasizing a home-like environment and attempting to treat his patients rather than simply locking them up away from society. St. Albans featured such amenities as a roof-top garden, a bowling alley, and a farm where the patients could work. Unfortunately, the treatments were still, by today’s standards, barbaric. Electroshock therapy, lobotomies, and insulin-shock therapies routinely left patients either brain-dead or just simply dead. Hydrotherapy was also employed, where patients were covered in towels soaked in cold water, or left in bathtubs for days on end. Given the violent nature of the treatments at the hospital, it is unsurprising that the location is home to numerous unquiet dead.

The spirits of St. Albans are many. A young boy named Jacob, an orderly named Donald, a grieving mother Rebecca, and the spirits Smokey and Red Eyes.

I live in Gallipolis, and an elderly neighbor said that when her children were little, during the time of the sightings sometimes around November, 1967. They were in our backyard playing and she saw a giant bird-like creature flying towards them. She described it as being dark brown colored and having big red eyes like what was described in the other sightings at the time. She scooped up the kids and ran inside because it looked like it could take one of the kids. She also said that behind our neighborhood they used to take walks along the railroad tracks and one day they saw an area in the field where the grass was flattened like a large creature had been laying there nesting. Given everything else that was happening, it freaked her out.

The Ogua is a freshwater cryptid that is said to look like a giant two headed alligator snapping turtle that weighs about 500lbs and is 20 feet long. It roams the West Virginia and Pennsylvania areas mostly dwelling in the Ohio, Allegheny, and Monongahela rivers. Though it is known to be an aquatic cryptid it is also said to come onto land to feed on deer, or unsuspecting humans. 

There have been several sightings of the Ogua in Marion County, West Virginia. It’s said that the first sighting of the creature was in 1745 where witnesses reported seeing a giant 2-headed turtle come up out of the Monongahela River, and pull a 12 year old boy who was fishing on the bank into the river where he was never seen again. 

Overall the Ogua sounds like a terrifying creature and not something many people would want to run into. Have you had an encounter with the Ouga creature? Or had another type of paranormal encounter? From what I can find, the three sisters were called The Black Sisters because they wore all black clothing. From the stories I heard, they wore black dresses, shoes, gloves, hats and veils, as though they were going to a funeral, or mourning. Their names were Mary Snead, Caroline Martin, and Virginia Wardlaw. Mary and Caroline came to Christiansburg around 1902 to help their sister Virginia run the Montgomery County Female Academy.

Around this time a few mysterious events began to happen. First there was the disappearance of a controversial illegitimate baby birthed by one of the students at the school. Shortly after, Mary’s son John was found burned to death in bed just a week after his mother and aunts had taken out a very large insurance policy on him. 

Sometime later, Caroline’s daughter Ocey came to town and married her first cousin (Mary’s son) Fletcher Snead. Sometime after, Ocey became pregnant and Fletcher left town, and so it was up to The Black Sister to take care of her.

It turns out they didn’t take very good care of Ocey and the baby at all. Shortly after the baby was born it died due to malnutrition. After that, Ocey was found drowned in the bathtub just days after a large insurance policy was taken out on her as well.

After all of these events occurred, the sisters left town for New Jersey. Soon after their arrival the authorities caught up with them. Caroline was convicted of Murder and sentenced to 7 years in a mental hospital where she later died. Mary pleaded guilty but got off on a technicality, and after that she fled to Colorado. Finally, Virginia starved herself to death before she ever saw the judge. 

So where does the paranormal aspect of this story come in? From what I’ve heard there are two locations that one or more of The Black Sisters are said to haunt. The first one is the old Christiansburg Middle School building. The former middle school, which is now the Montgomery County Public School’s technology center, was built on top of where the Montgomery County Female Academy stood. There have been reports of lights going on and out randomly, whispers, footsteps in the hallways when no one is around, and dark shadowy figures in some of the rooms and hallways.

The other location that I’ve heard the sister haunt is Sunset Cemetery, where Virginia Wardlaw is said to be buried. Supposedly, a taxi driver claimed to have driven them to the cemetery, where they conducted some type of ritual at a grave site. Was this ritual something that would allow them to later return as spirits to the cemetery? I’ve heard several people who have claimed to see their spirits at the cemetery. For the most part, people report seeing shadow figures darting around in the cemetery at night, but I’ve heard stories growing up that Viginia can be seen dancing around the cemetery at midnight.

This pretty much sums up what I’ve heard over the years. I hadn’t written a story on this topic yet because I’ve been so afraid that I would mess it up. Hopefully I did this story justice and my home town doesn’t hate me for it. I lived in Moneta for 17 years on Diamond Hill Rd. There's a neighborhood behind it called Virginia Woods, very close to the lake. On a 4th of July weekend maybe 8 years ago I was sitting on my deck with my ex-husband. It was late. I could hear a family having a little party through the woods, kids laughing. We sat there just talking when I caught something out of the corner of my eye in the treetops. An orange kind of light hovering. I have to say, I was like what the hell. My first thought was a plane on fire but no noise and it wasn't moving. Then it slowly moved along again, no noise. I followed it out to the street. Once I made it to the road I grasped this ball of light was big. My hair on my arms felt like it was standing up. I had no idea what I was looking at. I moved to the shadows behind my car as it slowly moved away. Finally I go in the house and my husband said he had been looking for a camera. For many years he would say he didn't know what he saw really was. Guess he didn't want me to tell this out of fear it sounds unreal.

When the Lowe family purchased the hotel in 1929 after the stock market crash, they renamed it the Lowe Hotel. Ruth, Rush, and Marcia Finley, the current owners and managers of the Lowe, purchased it in 1990. The Finleys have been continually upgrading and adding their personal touch to the building. A visit to the Lowe is a step back in time with today's conveniences. The friendly atmosphere and hospitality create a very pleasant and restful experience for any traveler.

Because of the hotel’s longevity, it’s no surprise that it is supposedly haunted. There are several ghosts who call the Lowe Hotel their home. Among them is a young woman in a dress that many have spotted dancing on the first two floors. On the second floor, guests have reported seeing the apparition of a young girl riding a tricycle and have even heard the creepy squeaks of her tricycle in the empty hallways. On the third floor, guests have reported hearing a soft whistling sound, as well as doors opening and closing on their own. Also on the third floor is the ghost of "Captain Jim", who many have reported seeing looking out of the window of room 316 toward the Ohio River. The creepiest part? He has no legs.

I have personally stayed at the Lowe Hotel several times, but one visit stands out above the rest. Around 2:00 a.m. during that stay, I woke up to hear footsteps going up and down the hallway on the third floor. The noise lasted for around half an hour. The next morning, when the lady at the front desk asked how I slept, I mentioned the people walking around in the middle of the night. She asked if I was sure I wasn’t dreaming and informed me that I had been the only guest that night.

We found out this bridge is actually a trestle. It was built in the 1940’s to service the American Viscose plant, it would allow easier transport of materials to and from the plant. Ultimately the plant was never built, and the trestle was mostly abandoned save for residents of the community using it to walk across the river. 

Over the years there have been several incidents reported on the trestle, as well as a few deaths. Given this information, it’s no surprise that the trestle is reportedly haunted. Residents report seeing a lady in a white wedding dress or white gown standing on or falling off the trestle. Due to the incidents the trestle was closed off but there have been several reports of people climbing up on it to this day.

While researching this topic I spoke with several individuals. None had a sighting themselves, but some had known someone that had. One individual, who wishes to remain anonymous, informed me that her grandmother lived close to the trestle and had seen a transparent looking young woman in a white gown passing about on it at night.

It’s been very interesting researching this story. I spent some time searching online initially and was unable to find anything about it. It wasn’t until our team started reaching out to the community on local Facebook groups that we found the information for this story. We had a lot of fun doing it.

I was born in Roanoke, but when I was maybe 11 or 12 years old, around 1978, my family had a small weekend cabin on the Bedford end of Smith Mountain Lake. We were on a cove, and so to the left was the lake and the right was forest and open land. There was a barbed and cattle wire fence that ran along the dirt road so you couldn't just go hiking into the woods. I had walked up the road to see if friends were home that had a weekend house across the cove from us. They weren't there that weekend so I was walking back home. The lake is on my left and the wooded area is on my right. It was about 2pm and the sun was very bright. I know it had to be around July because it was hot and we had been swimming that weekend. I was walking and glanced over to the woods and saw something very dark, semi crouched behind a pine tree looking toward a small clearing in the woods at some deer.

At first I thought it was a bear but bears do not crouch like that, and thought maybe it was an Angus heifer rubbing on the tree, but again it wasn't moving and it was in a semi crouched position. I only saw the back of him. He was in the shadows of the pines, but he had dark hair, almost black. Not overly long hair, but shaggy. Definitely on two legs in a hunched/crouched position behind the tree. I don't remember his head, but he did have broad shoulders. The wind was blowing to my back so I didn't get any odor from whatever it was. I watched very briefly and then ran very very fast to the house.

I told my Dad and he said to stay away from the woods and close to the house. I know when we left the next day, the object behind the tree was not there, so that eliminated it just being a branch or something

I've seen a few posts now for people looking for something fun and scary to do, so what better time than to tell you about our trip to Cairo, West Virginia the other night.

First we stopped off at the school to take a quick tour inside but we were chased out by bats so we went down another road which ultimately got us lost and scared that our vehicle would roll over the hill. We didn't stop there! We continued out to Silver Run tunnel 19, but instead of walking we decided to drive through. Upon coming to the opposite end, we looked over to a picnic table and all we saw were two bright red lights on top of this table. The odd part was the lights would appear and disappear. So two brave souls got out to look and one of them actually picked up two tea light candles, yet the candles were cold and were never lit so he kicked the candles to the woods and we backed the hell up and went to speed out of there. Then we decided to stop in in middle of the tunnel and turn the lights out while letting my son in law and another fella out, we lock the doors and go to speed off to mess with them but then my son in law comes hauling ass back to the vehicle and starts begging to be let back in. Once again these two red lights followed him into the tunnel. Mind you there were six of us total and we all watched these lights blink like they were eyes. So I stepped on the gas and we got the hell out of there! 

The even crazier part of all of this was when we got to the bridge to come across back into the little town, we came to a stop and suddenly you could hear the loudest scratching noise come across the outside of the vehicle. Of course, we all say what the heck was that and we sit there for a minute. My son in law got out and looked under, over and all around the vehicle and not a branch, twig NOTHING in that road,we booked our butts outta that town fast as crap,and I hold my hand to God this shit really all happened. That was my second most creepiest encounter at Silver Run in Cairo and I can say I'm definitely done with that place.

If you go to Norton, Virginia these days you’ll see many attractions featuring The Wood Booger monster including a restaurant called ‘The Wood Booger Grill’ and a statue (pictured above) located in the Flag Rock Recreation Area. You can also go on a Wood Booger guided search hike and there’s even a Wood Booger Festival!

What started the creature’s popularity? The show Finding Bigfoot did an episode in the area due to a video taken in Wise County. I had seen this video/sighting online in the past (video link below) and did not realize it was in this area. The video is referred to as “The Beast of Gum Hill”. A man was riding an ATV through a river on 4/5/09 when the creature walked out in front of him, he stopped and pointed at it as it slowly walked away. He claims in the video description that it is the second time he had seen the creature.

In Finding Bigfoot they also noted there weren’t a lot of known reports of sightings in the area but while calling a town hall meeting it was discovered that many people had had encounters that were not officially documented. Sightings were usually while hunting, or hiking, or even by kids playing in or near the woods. The creature was always described as a bulky humanoid creature about 7-8 feet tall with brown or black fur.

Eventually, I’ll try to get more of these sightings of Wood Booger posted on the site since they seem difficult to find. I’ll also try to visit this area one day and do some posts for our spooky sightseeing section of the site.

A newspaper article from The Point Pleasant Ledger indicates that the hauntings began around 1810. When this story took place the Ohio and what was then north-western Virginia areas were still in the process of being settled. There weren’t many roads at this point so the primary means of transportation was by the Ohio River. Despite the known dangers of traveling the river with valuables, two men set out with sacks of silver coins in their boats in hopes of purchasing land.

One night while tied to shore the men were murdered by two other men, who took the bags of coins and hid the bodies. Fearing they would get caught carrying the bags of coins around, they went down river and buried the coins on a ledge and planned to come back at a later time.

Unfortunately luck was not with the robbers. They joined a group of natives in a war with the settlers and were killed in battle. Before the last man died he confessed to killing the two men and made a map to where the money was stashed.

No one searched for the money for a while, but lantern lights were reported on the hillside almost immediately after the two thieves died. People in nearby Syracuse across the river reported seeing lights bobbing up and down on the hillside. One boatman reported following the light only to see a headless ghost of a man desperately trying to move a large rock.

Supposedly, you can still see the lights to this very day if you drive from Hartford City to New Haven along West Virginia Route 62. Warning: the roads do get closed often to rock slides, and that’s how it got its name “Sliding Rock Hill”.

As the story goes, Lucy was a young woman who died in the area when her family’s cabin burned down. It is said that after her death a man named Foster came across her, barefooted on the side of the road, one cold winter night. He gave her a ride home on his horse that night. After the event he couldn’t stop thinking about her, and stopped by to ask her parents if he could marry her. After hearing the story of how they met, the parents looked pretty surprised. They explained it couldn’t have been their daughter as she had died the year before and pointed in the direction of her headstone. 

To this very day travelers of this road have been reporting seeing Lucy on the side of the road on the Roaring Fork Motor Trail. People have reported seeing a young woman standing on the side of the road and offering her a ride, then note that during the ride she vanishes.

Stories of phantom hitchhikers can be found all over the world dating back to before the motor vehicle was even invented. It’s of no surprise that these types of stories exist in Appalachia. Most believe that the Cherokee moved into the area around Murphy, North Carolina, sometime around 1100 or 1200 AD. According to local Cherokee folklore, there was already a race of people living in a village in the area where the Hiwassee and Valley Rivers converge. These people were short, with very pale/white skin and blue eyes. Their eyes were so blue that they couldn’t see during the day, so they only came out at night. The Cherokee called them the moon-eyed people.

When I first heard about this story, I found it fascinating! A lot of people say that these moon-eyed people are aliens. The description does seem very similar to those given by many people in alien encounter stories. Looking at the statue, who wouldn’t think of aliens at first glance?

One similar encounter I thought of was the Kelly-Hopkinsville Encounter in 1955. Reports described these creatures as silvery-skinned and between two and four feet tall. However, these creatures had large yellow eyes with a sensitivity to light. I’ll likely cover that story another day in another post.

One popular theory is that the moon-eyed people were Welsh settlers that landed in Alabama in 1170 and eventually settled in the Murphy area where they were seen by the Cherokee. They had never seen people with pale skin, blonde hair, and blue eyes, so it makes sense that they may have thought these people were very strange looking!

He began hearing banging sounds coming from the garage at night and the motion lights would just go off when nothing was there. He hoped it was just some type of animal. When he couldn’t find any evidence of that, he put up a security camera in the garage. It wasn’t long before he started seeing recordings such as the ones included in this post. Several times a month, the camera alerts him to movement that ends up being these mysterious orbs.

Lastly, he mentioned that whatever is moving in the garage has not bothered anyone or harmed anything. Sometimes, shelves fall off, and he feels like something is watching him. Whatever it is has not stopped.

Kind of a weird one! I’m no expert on hauntings, but I think long as it’s not bothering anyone, maybe it’s best to leave it alone. What do you all think?

After the prison closed, the Moundsville Economic Development Council leased the complex for 25 years. Today it serves a dual purpose as a training facility and a tourist attraction. Today’s story takes place during a tour of the facility.

I grew up thirty minutes south of the former West Virginia State Penitentiary. My Grandfather worked there for a bit when he moved back to the area. My Father’s first haircut was given to him by an inmate that was serving time for murdering his wife and mother-in-law by tying them up and pushing them into a wood stove. Because of my proximity to it growing up I probably toured the Penitentiary a half dozen times, each time I just had an uneasy feeling while touring it. Fast forward to 2019 I get an opportunity to tour and get some pictures with my then new camera. 

I was ready for a great tour, I had my camera, two backup batteries I had charged that morning, and a couple different lenses. The tour was going great until the guide let me go into the kitchen area. Typically it’s off limits for tours due to the roof leaking and the wet floors being a liability issue. They made an exception because I was the only one on this tour. The guide told me I could explore the kitchen and freezer areas and when I was done all I had to do was take a left and I’d be back in the cafeteria. I took some pictures in the kitchen and started down the hallway the freezers are in.  

The hallway was pretty dark and when I attempted to take a picture my camera gave me a message that the object I was trying to photograph was too close to be focused on. I tried taking another picture and it tried to focus but then gave me the same message. I gave up and tried changing to my low light lense. When I tried taking another picture it didn’t even try to focus, it just gave me the same ‘too close to focus’ message. I turned and took a picture of the kitchen from the hallway, that picture was perfectly fine. I turned back around and got the same focusing message. I turned it out of auto focus and forced it to take a picture. For some reason it was super grainy and the lighting was weird. I tried to take another one and my screen went black- no error, no low battery warning- it just went black. I tried swapping out batteries for one I had charged that morning, it was dead. I tried the other backup battery, also dead. Eventually I made my way back around to the tour guide. He asked me if I got any good pictures. I told him my batteries died, and he looked completely unphased. All he asked was ‘how much power does your phone have?’

I pulled out my phone that I had charged on my way there that had been 100% when my tour started an hour prior; it was now down to 8% and in power saving mode. When I told him about that he just shrugged and told me that was why he no longer goes into the kitchen area. Apparently it’s pretty notorious for draining electronics. I still haven’t been able to explain what happened and since then I have taken pictures in darker places without having a similar issue.

From what I heard of this story is about a family on vacation hiking in Clingmans Dome, Tennessee. As they climbed the mountain it was very foggy and cold. While walking on a trail someone heard something walking along the trees, so they stopped to take a look. They all spot something in the distance and begin filming as it walks off behind a corner.

As you can see in the video, the creature stays in the area and a crowd begins to gather. Uphill among the trees you can see a figure, much larger than the local bears, with large hands and more fur. It stands still in the trees like it’s trying to hide, or perhaps observe the crowd. Then, it vanishes.

I believe I’ve heard in the past that this area is a Bigfoot hotspot. I’ve actually seen a different video of Bigfoot in the same area, but I was unable to find it again. I did discuss this video with my brother-in-law and we both noticed that as the potential Bigfoot walks around the corner that the fur looks a little funny and flares up around its ankles, perhaps casting doubts on the legitimacy of the sighting, but nonetheless this is an interesting video!

Paranormal Caught on Camera TV Show

Beyond its strange appearance, many report that the area is haunted. People have described leaving objects in the circle, only to come back the next day and find it on the outside of the clearing. This leads me to wonder: what is going on here?

Local legends say the Devil himself spends his nights in this very spot pacing around in the circle, thinking of ways to bring more human souls down to hell. The heat from his hooves kills all vegetation and causes the soil to remain barren. If he finds anything in his path—no matter the weight or size—he uses his immense strength to toss it out of his way.

Residents have passed down this story through the generations since the founding of Chatham County in 1771. To this day, no one has been able to present a logical explanation for the phenomenon.

Folks brave enough to attempt spending the night at this location have reported hearing howling sounds and footsteps. They have even reported seeing apparitions. Youtuber Kevin The Custodian Ghost Hunter unknowingly caught an apparition on camera in October 2019. In the video you can see what appears to be a blue, transparent woman walking by.

After looking into it, I found stories of a massive battle between Native American tribes in this exact spot. Could that explain the hauntings? Unfortunately, the area is now fenced in with no trespassing signs posted. Even though I had hoped to check this place out myself, but it doesn’t look like I will be able to—at least for now.

Kevin The Custodian Ghost Hunter

Two couples, the Scarberrys and the Mallettes, were driving around the abandoned North Power Plant in the TNT area when they noticed a creature coming from the trees above one of the bunkers. They later described this humanoid creature as bird-like with a large wingspan and piercing, fiery red eyes. The driver put the car in reverse and started driving away from the area. It was then that they noticed a large, dead dog lying on the side of the road. Shortly after the group discovered the dead dog, the creature jumped out at them. The driver of the vehicle floored it. Soon after, the group noticed the creature flying beside the car, screeching like a giant mouse. The creature managed to keep up with the car at speeds up to 100 mph. It then disappeared into a nearby field.

The group later went to the police station and reported the event. The deputy at the police station didn’t believe them at first, but, after seeing how truly terrified the couples were, decided to check it out. The deputy, along with the couples, drove around the area. Here, they noticed strange static noises coming from the radio. Also, the dead dog they had seen before was no longer there.

The next day, the sheriff and the couples held a press conference at the city courthouse to share the story. Due to the description of the creature and, at the time, the popularity of the Batman TV show, newspapers coined the name “Mothman”, inspired by the popularity of the Adam West Batman show.

News of the creature eventually spread outside of Point Pleasant, and it changed the town forever. 

Today, if you visit, you’ll see a town enriched with Mothman culture. There’s the world’s only Mothman Museum as well as several shops selling merchandise. Local restaurants have Mothman-themed food items, such as the Mothman Pizza from a local pizza shop and the Mothman Burrito from the Mexican restaurant a few blocks away from the museum

I’ve been up there probably 7 or 8 times and have seen the lights every time I’ve gone. I first went as a teenager with my father and friend on a camping trip. My father knew about the lights and told me and my friend. So of course we wanted to see for ourselves. On that first trip, I didn’t have a camera, but all three of us saw many strange lights down in Linville Gorge. We even saw a bright orange light hovering off the left side of Table Rock Mountain.

After this initial trip and experience, me and my friend went back several times specifically to try and see the lights. During these next few trips, I came prepared with a Canon DSLR camera, a 75mm to 300mm telephoto lens, and a tripod. We would hike around the area in the evening to kill time till it got dark out, then head to the Wiseman’s View Overlook to try and catch a glimpse of the lights.

At about 9:00 p.m. (or when it was dark out) I would set my camera up on the tripod and wait for a light to appear somewhere in the gorge. Whenever we would spot one, I would try and frame it in my viewfinder, zoom in as far as I could, and focus on the light. Then I would typically take a 20-30 second exposure. The exposure had to be this long to get any amount of light due to how dark it was outside.

I would repeat taking pictures until the light disappeared or a more interesting one popped up somewhere else. There were a couple of occasions where later in the night, I took a picture and waited 30 seconds for it to complete. Me and my friend would look at the picture on the camera and get so spooked that we freaked ourselves out and left for the night. We would be very excited to get home and look at the pictures in detail on the computer though.

There is one story that stands out above all when it comes to experiences at the gorge though. It’s one of those stories that sounds too crazy to be true but me and 3 friends all witnessed the same thing so I know it happened.

On one trip to Wiseman’s view, me and 3 friends went to see the lights as we’ve done multiple times. Unfortunately, the night was very inactive, and we just weren’t seeing any lights at all. What a bummer. After a couple of hours of looking and waiting, we decided to pack our stuff up and go home. As soon as I turned my camera off and went to take it off the tripod, what can only be described as a spotlight shot up into the sky out of the middle of the gorge. Way too powerful to be any flashlight. The light moved around quickly and then turned and shined directly on the four of us standing at the overlook. Just as quick as it was there, it was gone. We all froze in shock for a couple of seconds, then grabbed our stuff and got back to the car as quickly as possible. It’s an event I will never forget and will swear by its truth till the day I die.

Leif Ericson and his men are thought to be the first European explorers of North America. During their first visit in 986 AD, they reported seeing something strange. Leif wrote of huge hairy men who towered over him and his men. These men were loud and foul-smelling and lived in the woods. They had several encounters with the creatures and noted they were very different from the other natives they found in the new world.

Another documented early story I found happened in 1924. Albert Ostman, a lumberjack and outdoorsman, was asleep in his sleeping bag on a vacation camping trip in British Columbia when a Sasquatch picked him up and carried him for about 3 hours. He was taken to what seemed like a family of four creatures. Most reports say he was held captive for 6 days by the creatures. All that is known about Ostman’s time with them is that they fed him some type of sweet grass. Ostman was able to escape after he gave the largest creature some snuff, which caused it to get sick.

On August 27, 1958, near Bluff Creek, California, Jerry Crew arrived at a road construction site for work one morning and found tracks measuring a whopping 18 inches in length. He showed the prints to his co-workers, who referred to whatever was making the prints as “Big Foot,” thus giving the creature its name. A month later, more prints were found, and a plaster casting was made of one of them.

The Patterson and Gimlin footage from 1967 is the last one I’ll cover this go-round. On October 20, 1967, Patterson and Gimlin were horseback riding around 1:15 in the afternoon. They went around a downed tree and noticed a figure crouching, a man-like creature. They observed that it was about 7 foot 6 inches tall and covered in dark reddish-brown or black hair. Thinking this was odd, Patterson dismounted his horse and took out his camera. Paterson started running towards it while filming, which he explains is why the footage is so shaky, and at one point he even tripped. The creature eventually noticed the two and began walking away but looked back at them before disappearing. This video is probably the one that started the hype surrounding Bigfoot. It is how I first heard of him as a kid.

There you have it. These are some of the biggest stories that have encouraged Bigfoot fever. There are reports, pictures, and even videos of sightings of the creature all over the US these days. I have even seen several very near where I live. One day, I might cover some of those. I used to do IT work in Roanoke VA, and one of the buildings I went to was a remodeled farm house from 1928 that got turned into the La Maison french restaurant and later into an office. The story I heard while working there was that the building was haunted by two different ghosts.

The first ghost was called Old Man Coulter. He was the owner of the original farm house and all the land around the area. You could tell if the ghost was nearby there was always the smell of cigar smoke.

The other ghost was called the Blue or Gray Lady. She was seen looking out from the front windows that overlooked a graveyard across the street.

In my time working there I had never seen this Blue Lady but there were many occasions when I would randomly smell cigar smoke. Keep in mind this was a non-smoking building. I always thought that was kind of weird.

For example I would be fixing a network jack in the wall when the faint smell of cigars would reach my nose. I liked doing a lot of my work between 12pm-1pm so that everyone would be gone for lunch and I could work in peace. So usually when I looked around I did not find anyone else. My first thought was someone was smoking on their lunch and came in with the smell on them. But it always seemed like no one else was around me.Then the smell would slowly fade away.

Anyway, I never could explain it and as far as I know this story is not widely known so I wanted to share.

The odd thing about this one is the amount of evidence there is out there. Go on social media and search “trumpet sounds coming from the sky,” and you’ll find several pages full of records and news reports about the phenomenon. It was even included in the X-Files revival.

The question is, what is this?! Some who have experienced the phenomenon fear that it is a warning sign from heaven itself. In the Bible’s book of Matthew, there is a mention of trumpet sounds signaling a great disaster or the end of times. Let’s hope this isn’t the case! Here is the passage:

Immediately after the distress of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from the sky, and the heavenly bodies will be shaken. Then will appear the sign of the Son of Man in heaven. And then all the peoples of the earth will mourn when they see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven, with power and great glory. And he will send his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of the heavens to the other.

Matthew 24:29-31

I myself have experienced this phenomenon. In May 2019, I was in my yard playing with my dog when I started hearing a terrible sound coming from the sky. The sound even startled my dog. Me being me, the first thing I did was pull out my phone and record it. You can view that below. The sound lasted for about half an hour before it stopped, and I have not heard it since. My friends in the area were all puzzled on what it could be.

Many of Perryville’s residents have stories of things they cannot explain. Residents report being on their front porch or in their yards when men dressed in Confederate soldier uniforms show up and have normal conversations, only to disappear moments later.

One story that stood out to me was from a woman who lived in the town as a child. She recounted hearing footsteps coming up the stairs and then looking to see a gray figure walking up the steps. At this point, paralyzed by fear, she couldn’t move. The figure walked into her bedroom and moved toward her bed with a creepy grin on his face. She closed her eyes, hoping it would go away. She then felt something drop on her bed. When she opened her eyes, there was an arm on the bed crawling towards her. The girl screamed. After this her parents came running. By the time they arrived, the ghostly figure had vanished. When the family looked into the property’s history, they discovered that it had belonged to an officer who had lost their arm in the nearby battle.

I’ve shared this story before. I am reluctant to share again, I am sure it will sound like I’m bat shit crazy, but the truth is, this happened without a doubt.

I live in Southern Michigan, USA. A couple of years ago back in 2019. I was on my way home from a friend’s house. It was about 11pm. I was alone in my F150 truck. I was sitting at a red light about a mile from home. I was completely sober. No drinking/No drugs. No other cars at the intersection, just me. As I waited for the light to turn green, something fluttering caught my eye in my rear view mirror. At first I thought a big bird, but as I continued to stare, I saw this was no bird. It was huge. Flying about 6-8 feet above the road behind me, heading directly at me. Probably a good city block behind. I saw it’s wings flapping. As it got closer, I could see each wing was about a 6 ft. span. It had a human type body. It was all black. I was frozen in fear. I may have even stopped breathing. My mind raced to try and justify what I was seeing. My eyes quickly darted around looking for flags, banners, some something that possibly created this image I was seeing on the road. There was nothing. It just about reached the bed of my truck when the light turned green, I broke my stare, and I floored it out of there. Funny how your mind races and your body freezes while trying to justify what your seeing. That was the most awful fear I ever experienced. When I got home I was trembling. Reality set in. To this day I still don’t know what the hell it was that I saw…. I searched the net to give you an idea of that I saw. I know, I know what this sounds like but, I never saw it again, and I hope I never do.

This story gave me goosebumps just reading it. It’s also exciting because it’s a more recent sighting. I’ve been seeing a lot of talk about Mothman sightings in the Illinois and Michigan areas. Maybe this is where it is living these days? Let me know what you think in the comments!

June 2016, Aberdeen, Ohio. I was working the night shift at my local Taco Bell, when I had one of the scariest moments in my life that I have ever experienced. It was 10:00 at night, the place was a graveyard, I was working the drive thru that night. We hadn’t had a customer in hours so I was catching up on some cleaning. Suddenly there was a loud static sound over my drive thru headphones, so loud I had to take them off. I checked the camera, nothing there so I went about my business. I then start getting that feeling like someone is watching me. Shortly after my co-worker comes from the back and lets out a shriek, I turn to see a girl with jet black hair standing at the drive thru window facing us. My coworker and I look at each other in dis-belief. We then hear the girl speak in a voice that still chills me to this very day. “May I come in?” My coworker and I stood there for a moment not knowing what to say. I then responded, “Sorry miss, the restaurant is closed for the night. We are only taking orders through the drive thru.” Then the girl replies, “ Please let me come in?! I really need to use that bathroom.” My co-worker then looks at me and whispers, “Dude maybe we should just let her in, she’s just a kid.” I shake my head no. Something just feels off about this whole thing. I mean what is a 10 or 11 year old girl doing standing in a drive thru at 10:00PM on a Wednesday night? I responded to the girl, “I’m sorry we can’t let anyone in, we’ve closed the restaurant for the night.” After a moment of silence the girl starts banging on the window shouting, “Let me in! Let Me in!” I look at my co-worker and ask, “What should we do?!” he responded, “I don’t know, call the police?!” The girl then stops and stares at us and that’s when we see it, a set of pitch black eyes. After a few moments of silence we hear a voice that sounds like it’s coming from a thousand miles away. “…Hello?” We look in the direction it’s coming from, the drive thru headset! We walk over to it, turning our backs to the girl. I responded, “Hello?” The man on the other end responds, “Yes, can I have two 5 layer burritos?!” My co worker then shouts “Oh my god! She’s gone!” I turn to look at the girl who is nowhere to be seen. 

After serving the guy in the drive thru, my coworker and I began searching the internet on my phone only to find we had just had an encounter with a blacked eyed kid. I worked at that Taco Bell for another 2 years before moving from Ohio, we never saw the girl again.

This early account of black-eyed children comes from Virginia in 1950 and concerns a 16-year-old boy, known only as “Harold.”

According to the story, Harold was walking home one afternoon when he came across another boy leaning against a fence, as if waiting for someone. The teenager attempted to speak to him but received no response. He was about to walk off and go on with his journey, when the strange boy suddenly stated to Harold, “I want to go to your house. You’re going to take me to your house.”

It was then that Harold noticed the blackness of the boy’s eyes. There was no white in them, just solid black. Harold began to contemplate turning and running home as fast as he could when something even stranger and more chilling happened: the boy blurted out, “Now, don’t you run away from me. You’re going to walk me up to your house.”

Harold turned and ran anyway, faster than his legs had ever carried him before. He later recalled to his parents that as he did so, he heard a scream behind him—a scream that sounded very similar to that of a bobcat.

Interestingly, his parents believed their son’s account, so much so that his father was said to have grabbed his gun and immediately gone out looking for the menacing boy who had demanded his son take him to their family home. His mother apparently thought her son had an encounter with the Devil himself and stated that she would take him to see the local priest.

I’ve always found the urban legend of the black-eyed kids equally creepy and interesting. Let me know what you think about the story in the comments section. I will more than likely be posting more stories about The Black-Eyed Kids in the future.

This first story is not as well known as some of the other Mothman stories. However, it is believed to be one of the first encounters with the creature. On November 1, 1966, several National Guardsmen in Point Pleasant saw what they described as a large, brown, man-shaped figure on a tree limb near the National Guard Armory.

Our next story took place on November 12, 1966, in Clendenin, West Virginia – a few days before the more famous sighting on the 15th. Kenneth Duncan, along with four other men, was digging a grave for his father-in-law when he noticed a pair of red, glowing dots coming from the nearby woods. He then noticed the pair of dotted eyes that belonged to what looked like a tall brown man. Shortly after he noticed this, a set of wings spread from the man. Then, it jumped up and momentarily flew over the men’s heads before disappearing. This creature eventually became known as the Mothman.

The Mothman has always been one of my favorite cryptids. I remember reading about it when I was very young and being extremely creeped out. That’s probably what started my interest in the creature. I plan on doing additional posts in the future about the Mothman and the strange occurrences in Point Pleasant.

As you might imagine, the family was terrified by these events. Fearing ridicule, they kept the strange occurrences to themselves for about a year until it became unbearable. The father, John Bell, confided in their neighbors, the Johnsons. John invited them to stay over for a few nights so that they too could witness the events. After a few nights of strange events, Mr. Johnson suggested more people be told, and a committee was formed to start an investigation.

It was not long after this that people began traveling from many miles away to witness these strange occurrences, and soon this entity gained a voice. It said it was a witch named Kate Batts but soon became referred to as the Bell Witch. Kate said she wanted two things. First, she wanted John Bell dead, and, second, she wanted to prevent John’s youngest daughter, Betsy, from marrying a neighbor boy named Joshua Gardner.

Over the next few years, the family was tormented almost daily. John and Betsy received the worst of it. Betsy was scratched, having her hair pulled, and even receiving beatings. John began suffering from spells of swelling, mostly in the throat, as well as physical beatings. John said that Kate would blast him with threats and curses.

Finally in 1820, after drawing huge crowds, Kate seemed to accomplish her mission. On December 20, John Bell died; it was believed that he was poisoned by Kate. Then in March of the next year, Betsy broke off her engagement to Joshua Gardner. After this, Kate bid everyone farewell and said she would return in 7 years.

In 1828, Kate did return for a few weeks. She visited the home of John Bell, Jr. and had several long talks with him about the past and future. She said there was a reason for stopping Betsy’s marriage and for the death of John Sr. but it was never explained. She said that she would return again in 100 years.

People in the area said she never left, and there are reports of strange occurrences still happening on the Bell family’s old farm and at the Bell Witch Cave in Adams, Tennessee. I may circle back and add a few of these stories if there’s interest among you readers. After her death, the woman returned as a vengeful spirit, or onryō. As an onryō, she covers her mouth with a cloth mask (often specified as a surgical mask or, in some iterations, a hand fan or handkerchief). She also carries a sharp instrument with her, which has been described as a knife or a large pair of scissors. She is said to ask potential victims if they think she is pretty or attractive.. If they answer “no,” she will kill them with her weapon, and if they answer “yes,” she will reveal her mutilated mouth. She then repeats her question, “Even now?” If the individual responds with “no” or screams in fright, she will kill them with her weapon. If they respond with “yes,” she will slice the corners of their mouth from ear to ear, resembling her own disfigurement. It’s said that the only way to survive the encounter is to answer, “so-so” or “What do you think?” to confuse the spirit. I’ll be giving you one of the most commonly told stories of the Slit-Mouthed Woman from Japanese culture.

Many years ago there was a young man of 20 called Kosuke, who worked at a shop called Daikokuya in Motogikucho, Edo. Being a fresh new employee, he was asked by his boss to run an errand in Ookubohyakunincho (present day Shinjuku). He was asked to deliver a letter and wait for the reply, but the reply took a considerable amount of time. By the time he was able to return, the sun was already setting, and, to top it all off, it had started to rain. Kosuke pulled out his umbrella and lit a lantern, then put the letter in his pocket and hurried along the street back to the shop.

Along the way he noticed a young woman, soaked and running along the street.. He called out to the woman and told her he was returning to Motogikucho, but if she would like to share his umbrella along the way she could. The woman stopped dead in her tracks and quickly turned around. The moment she did, Kosuke screamed and fell backwards. The woman’s mouth was cut from ear to ear. Fangs jutted out, and her eyes sparkled at the sight of him.

Kosuke had worried about returning to the shop late but ended up being carried back. On his arrival it was as though he had aged all at once. His teeth had fallen out, and his face had grown old. Without saying another word, he took his final breath.

There were several Slit-Mouthed Woman sightings in the area at the time. It is believed that Kosuke was attacked by her based on the story he told them men who found him.

Flatwoods West Virginia – On September 12th, 1952, around 7 o’clock in the evening, brothers, Eddie and Freddie May, and their friends – Neil Nunley, Tommy Hyer, and Ronnie Shaver – were playing on the lawn of Flatwoods Elementary School when the group saw what was described as a fireball fly quickly overhead and land on a nearby hilltop just past the Fisher Farm. The group, after conscripting Kathleen May and Gene Lemon, crossed the farm and walked into the woods where the boys thought the fire ball landed. In an account provided by Nunley, he reportedly saw a pulsing red light near the top of the hill. Then, suddenly, Lemon saw a pair of shining, animal-like eyes, and aimed a flashlight in their direction. The light revealed a towering “man-like” figure with a round, red “face” surrounded by a “pointed, hood-like shape.” The body was dark and seemingly colorless, but some would later say it was green, and Mrs. May reported seeing “drape-like” folds. The monster was observed only momentarily, as suddenly it emitted a hissing sound and glided toward the group. Lemon screamed and dropping his flashlight. Terror seized the group as they ran away to escape the horror they had found.

Early the next morning, a reporter visited the site of the encounter and discovered two tracks in the mud, as well as traces of a thick black liquid. He immediately reported them as being possible signs of a saucer landing based on the premise that the area had not been subjected to traffic for at least a year. It was later revealed that the tracks were likely to have been those of a Chevrolet pickup truck driven by a local, who had gone to the site to look for the creature some hours prior to Stewert’s discovery.

After the event, investigators associated with Civilian Saucer Investigation, obtained a number of accounts from witnesses who claimed to have experienced a similar or related phenomena.
