I shared a funny-but-real story from this week: while I was out of town, our HVAC filter got completely clogged and the system couldn’t push out the heat we needed. That’s exactly what unaddressed anger does in a relationship. We tied it to Psalm 103 and God’s incredible mercy that heals and restores.

The heart of the episode? Forgiveness unclogs everything. It frees us to harbor love instead of bitterness and lets trust and closeness flow again. Lisa broke it down so practically: forgive first (take the step), forgive fast (don’t let it sit), forgive fully (let it go completely), and forgive freely (extend grace with no strings).

We also gave quick updates on our 40 Day Prayer Challenge, our words for the year—FOCUS (Family, Others, Community, Understanding, Self) and OUTDO from 2 Corinthians 8:7—and yeah, we’re still adjusting from sandy St. Maarten back to snowy reality!

In this episode, Lisa and I unpack the crucial difference between appreciation and affirmation—two powerful tools that can transform every relationship, from the workplace to your closest connections.

Appreciation is all about recognizing and expressing gratitude for what someone does. When you thank a colleague for their hard work or acknowledge a friend’s kindness, you’re communicating appreciation. These words motivate, reinforce positive behavior, and strengthen both personal and professional bonds. Appreciation is typically a response to someone’s actions—think, “Thank you for cooking today’s Easter meal.”

Affirmation, on the other hand, goes deeper. It’s not just about what someone does, but who they are. Words of affirmation communicate love, respect, encouragement, and emotional support. They make people feel valued, understood, and secure, especially for those whose primary love language is affirmation. For example, instead of just saying thank you, you might say, “Lisa, you live and love to serve your family. You are selfless, and that was demonstrated in your preparation and the meal you prepared.”

“Appreciation motivates. Affirmation validates.”

Practical Ways to Cultivate a Culture of Appreciation and Affirmation:

•Consistently offer authentic, life-giving affirmations that validate others’ qualities and encourage them.

•Show appreciation through thoughtful actions—helping with tasks, running errands, or small surprises.

•Send handwritten thank-you notes or recognize achievements with small rewards, like a gift card for going the extra mile at work.

•Remember, simple gratitude is powerful, but intentional affirmation can be life-changing.

This week is Holy Week...a time for Christians to reflect on Jesus’ sacrifice, death, and resurrection, marking the transition from Lent to Easter and celebrating the core of Christian salvation. And HOLY WEEK has a lot to say about the hope and direction of your marriage!

About 60% of marriages are still together, but that doesn’t mean they are thriving.

For the remaining 40% of marriages, they have spent the cash, filed for divorce, and are most likely having custody issues over the kids. Divorce is vicious.

A few stats…

• in 2022… there were over 674K divorces in America (https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/fastats/marriage-divorce.htm) 
• There is a decline in the divorce rate to where 40% of all marriages in the US end in divorce because Millennials are contributing to the decline by marrying later and staying married longer. (https://www.wf-lawyers.com/divorce-statistics-and-facts/)

How would you describe your marriage? 

• Is it thriving?
• Do you feel like your marriage is on it’s last breath? 
• Has it “flatlined”? 
• Is it in the GRAVE?

The mind is the battleground for the war that rages over your soul. This war generates arresting anxiety, negative narratives, & debilitating doubt. Loving deeply is supernatural and begins with KNOWING GOD

To love deeply is to forgive freely

• Trust IS the reliance on the integrity, strength, ability, & surety of a person; CONFIDENCE. 

Principles of trust:

1. When you have the trust of another, you have been entrusted with something that has immeasurable value…steward it well. 
2. Trust STRIVES towards clarity and includes HEALTHY conflict
3. Trust is diminished when we over-promise and under-deliver. 
4. Trust is built on TRUTH and EXECUTION… it is both transformative and transactional.

Pray FOR them

• Children are a heritage FROM the Lord
• Children are like arrows in the hands of a warrior — let’s shoot them in the right direction 
• Pray they would KNOW God personally
• If they are Christ Followers already… pray for them to remain FAITHFUL and continue to seek truth and Love God with all their heart soul mind and strength
• If they are not walking with God…Keep your mouth shut, the welcome mat out and PRAY continually 

Pray WITH them

• Model prayer
• ACTS
• Help them understand that they can communicate with the Father in Heaven
• It’s connecting the spiritual dots 
• It’s reinforcing their childlike faith

Pray OVER them

• Lay your hands on their heads and hearts and pray that they would be filled with the peace of God guards their hearts and minds

BIG IDEA: It can be easy to go through the motions of faith until we are faced with the impossible. 

Luke 1:5-25 (ESV) 5 In the days of Herod, king of Judea, there was a priest named Zechariah, of the division of Abijah. And he had a wife from the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth. 6 And they were both righteous before God, walking blamelessly in all the commandments and statutes of the Lord. 7 But they had no child, because Elizabeth was barren, and both were advanced in years. 8 Now while he was serving as priest before God when his division was on duty, 9 according to the custom of the priesthood, he was chosen by lot to enter the temple of the Lord and burn incense. 10 And the whole multitude of the people were praying outside at the hour of incense. 11 And there appeared to him an angel of the Lord standing on the right side of the altar of incense. 12 And Zechariah was troubled when he saw him, and fear fell upon him. 13 But the angel said to him, “Do not be afraid, Zechariah, for your prayer has been heard, and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall call his name John. 14 And you will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth, 15 for he will be great before the Lord. The effects of making excuses:

1. Other people become the blame because Your attitude is about self and you refuse to accept responsibility. In other words, you’re a chicken.
2. It doesn’t just limit growth. It prevents growth.
3. It perpetuates generational dysfunction. 
4. You avoid hard conversations therefore, the relationship never goes anywhere. 
5. It limits your capacity to handle pressure…which is a privilege. You can’t take the heat.

In our marriage coaching, we recently started using the SYMBIS (from Les and Leslie Parrot) tool to capture a clear snapshot of the couples we work with AND give them feedback on who they will be with for Jo the remainder of their lives.  

This tool assesses your attitude towards marriage, your individual & relational well-being, your contexts (social support, finances, & expectations), & your dynamics.

WHERE DID THE FIVE MINDSETS COME FROM?

The SYMBIS research team interviewed more than 3,600 young adults (18-30), an equal number of men and women, spread evenly across the ages, and unpacked the following FIVE attitudes.

Those five mindsets (or attitudes) and their MARRIAGE THEMES are:

1. RESOLUTE — Divorce is not an option.
2. RATIONAL — Marriage is hard work.
3. ROMANTIC — We’ll live happily ever after.
4. RESTLESS — I need more time.
5. RELUCTANT — Why take the risk?

Therefore, gentleness is a fruit of the Spirit of God that is produced in Christ-followers.

A lack of gentleness comes from a spirit of pride and immaturity. On the other hand, gentleness is cultivated in the soil of struggle and fertilized in the solitude of time in God's Word.

Ask these questions to "check your pride" at the door so you can practice gentleness...

1. Am I considerate, generous, and fair or am I rigid, exact, and demanding?
2. Am I prepared to be sensitive to the things going on with those around me? Or just concerned with my needs. 
3. Do I show appreciation to those who serve me?
4. Do I tell myself I’m standing on principle or just being stubborn?
5. Am I becoming increasingly reasonable, compassionate, and kind, or unreasonable, crusty, and unkind?

What's the Difference between HAPPINESS & JOY?

• Happiness is fickle; it’s natural; it changes like the wind; God never promises happiness
• JOY is supernatural; it’s a gift from the Lord; it’s a fruit of God’s Spirit; God does promise joy

Leadership is a thru-hike

Most impactful message I've ever heard...besides the Gospel: “Be Patient-Be Present-Be Deliberate” / Chadd Wright / first lesson learned on the Basic Course just before we packed our packs (Oct 2021).

How did Jesus influence others?

Romans 12:9-21 is the Model for all to follow:

Romans 12:9-21 (NIV) 9 Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. 10 Be devoted to one another in love. Exercising Your Marriage

• time near each other and time away from one another
• Date one another / planned
• Do fun things together
• Tee Time vs Tea Time
• Pray for one another…
• this one (for me) does not come easy
• What’s your love language
• Hold hands (touch / physical intimacy)
• Time
• Gifts
• Acts of service
• Words of affirmation
• Learn to say these two things:
• Do you need me to just listen or do you need me to fix it?
• Will you forgive me?
• Forgive fast, frequently & faithfully
• Be around other HEALTHY marriages
• Serve together (discover how God has gifted your spouse)

DON’T DO’s

• Don’t leave the lid up
• Don’t intentionally irritate your spouse (Truvia packets 🤣 and drive-by’s)
• Be a sweety and wipe the seaty
• Don’t hang out with people who suck the life out of you and leave you with nothing left for when you get home.

In the fall of 1983, Jerry's life changed forever in his senior year. On the opening kickoff of his high school's championship football game, Jerry broke his neck making a tackle, and has been a quadriplegic ever since.

What’s the difference between a moment of fear and having a spirit of fear?

How do you assess fear?

Healthy and Unhealthy Fear

What are the effects of elevated and sustained levels of fear?

• Fear causes us to pull back
• Chronic Worry
• Creeping Cynicism
• Physical health

FIVE UNDESIRABLE REALITIES OF FEAR:

Fear holds your mind captive. Say no to your fears! Don’t allow them to take residency in your soul.

Fear diminishes hope. There’s ALWAYS hope. What can you do? Take action.

Fear convinces you of the need to hide. You are exposed.

A lack of authenticity causes you the inability to connect with others at a heart level.

“God often gives others as part of the remedy to break through the fear but you can’t because you are not authentic with anybody.”

Fear causes you to lead defensively.

"You can’t win from a position of defense in leadership. You spend all your energy in protecting what you have."

Fear dampens your joy.

"The devil loves to insight fear. Fear suffocates the soul."

Solutions:

1. Don’t bottle up your fear.
2. Name the fear. When you name the fear…you begin to tame the fear. You make the fear smaller when you define it…it makes you smaller when it defines you.
3. Take action. What can you do about it?
4. Let God handle what you can’t handle.
