In this episode, we’re getting into Maxwell’s full discography, spotlighting Maxwell’s Urban Hang Suite on it’s 30th anniversary (April 2, 1996,) while also discussing his MTV Unplugged, Embrya, Now, BLACKsummers’night & blackSUMMERS’night albums.

We walk through his full run, from hits like “Sumthin’ Sumthin’,” “Ascension (Don’t Ever Wonder),” “Matrimony: Maybe You,” and “Pretty Wings” to deeper album cuts, sharing our favorites along the way.

Miguel also finds a way to link Embrya and OutKast’s ATLiens.

Soundtracks used to be a real companion piece to new movie releases. New artists were launched, established artists dropped some of their best songs, and big name producers gave us their best work, not just a bunch of leftover tracks.

The best soundtracks could stand on their own, they lived on much longer than the movie that it was attached to did. Especially if it was BETTER than the movie.

We rewatched his entire filmography and reviewed every role, from the iconic to the...not so great. From his chilling performance as Bishop in Juice to his nuanced portrayal of heroin-addicted jazz musician in Gridlock'd, we cover all six of his films.

We're discussing favorite scenes, favorite characters and favorite lines. We also get into what roles made famous by others that we would have liked to have seen Tupac play, and which of his characters that we could be friends with.

Next Stop, Uptown

In this episode, we're discussing how Uptown Records reshaped that sound and style of a generation. From the rise of new jack swing with Teddy Riley and Guy, to Mary J. Blige and Jodeci redefining what R&B could be, Uptown didn't follow trends, it set trends. Uptown also helped to bring Black culture to both big and small screens with the film Strictly Business, and New York Undercover tv show. With the Uptown MTV Unplugged special, they proved that hip hop and R&B could hold its own in the same arena as pop and rock legends. Uptown was more than just a record label, and was the blueprint for pretty much every urban record label that followed.

Made up of Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins, and Ronnie DeVoe—all members of New Edition—they branched off and blew up in 1990 with Poison, an album that defined the "new jack swing" era, and this week just happens to be the 35th anniversary (damn!) of its release, so we decided to get into that and more!

Kelis: Kaleidoscope 25th Anniversary

This week, we're doing another anniversary episode, and this time we're celebrating the anniversary of Kelis' debut album, Kaleidoscope. With her colorful hair and punk attitude, she literally burst onto the scene screaming "I hate you so much right now!" backed by the sounds of Chad Hugo & Pharrell Williams, aka The Neptunes.

We get into how this album is a mix of several genres rather than just straight R&B. With its collage of electronic, funk, hip hop and rock influences, Kelis and The Neptunes gave us an album with a sound that we hadn't really heard before, and it kicked off a production style that continues to this day.

Mary J. Blige: My Life 30th Anniversary

On this episode, we're discussing one of our favorite albums, My Life by Mary J. Blige. If you're anything like us, you've been bumping this consistently for the past 30 years. Yes, 30 years! Originally released on November 29, 1994, this album is a reflection of Mary's struggles with heartbreak and depression.

Her vulnerable lyrics paired with lush production from Chucky Thompson created a groundbreaking piece of work that redefined R&B, and still resonates today. This is the album that solidified her title as the "Queen of Hip Hop Soul."

The reports of hip hop’s demise have been greatly exaggerated. In the past few months, we’ve read and heard about its supposed decline, yet these articles look past its influence across other genres. It can be found in K-pop, country and mainstream pop. Hip hop has become so ingrained in our culture that now that it’s no longer viewed as “underground,” it feels like it’s fading. In this episode, we’re talking about hip hop’s role and relevance in today’s pop culture landscape.

Later in the episode, we talk about our favorite rappers-turned-actors, and we also discuss why Snoop Dogg is one of the most popular artists (of any genre) to ever live.

He's done albums for himself as a member of Guy & Blackstreet, and he was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame June 15, 2023. He's the King of New Jack Swing, Teddy Riley.

His resume is so long that we had to break this up over two episodes. On this one, we're only getting into the production side of his career, so Guy & Blackstreet talk is at a minimum. Heavy D: Nuttin' But Love

On this episode we’re talking about Mr. Big Stuff, The Heavster, The Overweight Lover, out of Moneyearnin’ Mount Vernon, the diddly, diddly, diddly, diddly, diddly D. One of a small number of people who have done a song with both Michael and Janet Jackson. The man who is pretty much responsible for kicking off Uptown Records, since he was the first act signed to the label, and as an executive at Uptown he's was instrumental in bringing Jodeci, Monifah, Soul For Real and others to the company.

Along with DJ Eddie F, Trouble T-Roy and G-Wiz aka The Boyz, he brought us hit after hit. He could do new jack swing, boom bap, reggae, pop...he could do it all. There have been very few hip hop artists who could seamlessly maneuver through so many styles and genres at such a high level, all while never compromising his authenticity. Since his untimely passing in 2011, he's been sorely missed, and that's why we're talking about none other than Heavy D.

New Edition: Boys To Men

Trackmasters: Respect

This week we’re talking about a production team that had a major influence on a time in hip hop that we spoke about in the last episode, the so-called “jiggy, shiny suit, bling bling era.”

Even though they had been around since 1990 doing tracks for act like Chubb Rock, Kool G. Rap, Big Daddy Kane, Roxanne Shante and The Real Roxanne, 1994 is when they really started to shine. Making albums and tracks for LL Cool J, Nas, Foxy Brown, Jay-Z, J. Lo, Will Smith, 50 Cent.

You can arguably say that the sound of hip hop & R&B music was defined by them. They have 23 number one singles and five Grammy awards, we're talking about Poke & Tone, the Trackmasters.

Ms. Lauryn Hill: The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill 25th Anniversary

This week, we're discussing the 25th anniversary of Lauryn Hill's solo debut album, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. This classic album was released on August 25, 1998, and features a number of standout tracks like "Doo Wop (That Thing)," "Ex-Factor," "Lost Ones," "To Zion" and more. She won five Grammy's for this album, making her the first woman to win five or more in one night, including the Grammy for Album of the Year. This was also the first hip hop album to win Album of the Year. We explored Lauryn's work with The Fugees and her career leading up to what would become a hip hop and R&B classic, and its lasting impact on the world of music.

On this episode, we are going to talk about a TV show that ran for five seasons on Fox from 1990 to 1994. Created by Keenen Ivory Wayans, it launched the careers of some of the biggest names in show business like Jennifer Lopez, Jim Carrey, Jamie Foxx, Shawn and Marlon Wayans, Rosie Perez and more. It was a sketch comedy unlike anything that had come before it and haven't seen since. We're discussing how the show is rooted in such works as Hollywood Shuffle, I'm Gonna Git' You Sucka, and Eddie Murphy: Raw, how the impact and legacy of the show still influences pop culture today, and of course we had to get into some of our favorite sketches.

The Many Faces Of Steven Yeun

On this episode we're gonna talk about an actor who got his big break playing a “plucky pizza delivery guy” turned badass survivalist in The Walking Dead for six long seasons. He then went on to play a wide range of characters in critically acclaimed movies such as Nope and Minari. The latter, which he was also an executive producer and earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor, which also made him the first Asian American to do so. 2023 marks the 50 year anniversary of what is widely accepted and agreed upon as the birth of hip hop, August 11, 1973. We are celebrating those 50 years with a series of conversations with some our favorite podcast hosts. With hip hop being the most influential and dominant musical genre of the past two decades or so, we believe it's important to reflect on its rich history and evolution. Throughout this series, we will be joined by guests who will share their thoughts and experiences. From their earliest hip hop memories to their thoughts on the current state of affairs, this series will take a fun look at hip hop and its impact on society and culture.

In this episode, we are joined by B. Cox from the The Vault: Classic Music Reviews Podcast. We're talking about some of our favorite albums, what it is that makes something classic and discuss some recent albums that we think will be regarded as classics down the line. We end the episode with a game that we call "This or That?" The choices ranged from picking between two classic hype men to which classic album would B. Cox never listen to again if it came to it.

A #HipHop50 Conversation With Queue Points Podcast

Dr. Dre: The Chronic 30th Anniversary

This classic album, which was released on December 15, 1992, features a number of notable, but then unknown artists, including Snoop Dogg, Nate Dogg, and Warren G. In this episode, we will explore the making of The Chronic and its lasting impact on the world of hip-hop. We will also discuss how Dre's work with The World Class Wreckin' Cru and N.W.A. laid the foundation for the sound and style that he would perfect on The Chronic, and the role that the album played in the rise of West Coast hip-hop and the emergence of G-Funk.

Janet: Ms. Jackson If You're Nasty

This week, we're discussing one of the most well-rounded entertainers of all time. She started as a child actress in the 1970's on such shows as Good Times and A New Kind Of Family. She then had roles on hit shows such as Diff'rent Strokes and Fame, before starting her musical career as a teen in the 1980's. Since then she's released 11 studio albums and has sold well over 100 million albums worldwide, and has influenced some of the biggest pop stars in the world today.

She continued her acting career in the 90's and 2000's in films like Poetic Justice, Nutty Professor II, the Why Did I Get Married series and For Colored Girls.

We forgot to mention that she comes from one of the most famous families in entertainment.

And if you didn't know, her "first name ain't Baby, it's Janet."
