Ciao and Welcome to Life in Lucca with Andrea…

My guest today is Debra Fast; her story is the stuff of dreams. When Debra graduated from Music School, she embraced the opportunity to play Violin with a string quartet on Cruise ships where she met the Italian pianist, Sandro Ivo Bartoli, whom she married, and started a new life in Italy. Debra speaks about her dedication to music, and in particular, her professional career as a solo violinist. She tells a mesmerising story; I particularly found her Suono Solo project, with its links to the 18th century Lucchese composer, Geminiani, fascinating. A deciding factor in choosing Lucca was the excellent Bilingual schools.

In this episode, Nicole discusses her experience of moving from the States to Italy, and the array of opportunities for her children, not least as they are now more fluent in Italian than their Mama!

If you are thinking of moving to Lucca, or spending an extended period in Lucca with a young family, this episode is especially insightful…

Connect with Nicole

Website: www.nicolecloutierdigital.com

E:mail: nicole@nicolecloutierdigital.com

Nicole’s Recommendations

Trattoria Gigi… Piazza del Carmine, 7

Da Ciacco… Piazza Napoleone,10

Da Umberto… Piazza Napoleone, 24

Pasticceria Meucci… Via Vittorio Veneto, 12

Osteria del Bastian Contrario… Via San Paolino, 90

Osteria Da Rosolo… Corte Campana, 3

Gelateria Veneta… Via Vittorio Veneto, 74

Walk or cycle the Walls

Climb the Guinigi Tower

Basilica di San Frediano

Cycle around Centro Storico and explore

Maria Pacini Fazzi Editore… Local history book shop and publisher… Via Sant'Andrea, 12

Etta’s English book shop… Chiasso Barletti, 16

Watch a film at Astra Cinema… Piazza del Giglio, 7

Dinner at Buca di San Antonio… Via della Cervia, 3

Favourite Italian Word/Phrase

Bene… buono… bello/a… good

Mosto fiato….

Ciao and Welcome to Life in Lucca with Andrea…

My guest today is Steve Hayward. I first met Steve when I did my first ever Parkrun on the walls of Lucca and we’ve been friends ever since. Steve is a retired Merchant Navy Captain, after spending 50 years at sea. As you would expect, Steve is well travelled, having spent many years living and working in a variety of ports, including Italy and China. Theresa also spends a few months each year in Lucca, where she has firmly established herself as a valued member of the Lucca community… indeed she is considered an honorary citizen in Lucca… and this is evident whenever you walk out in Centro Storico with Mama T, as she is fondly known. Locals, shopkeepers and even the Mayor stop to say Ciao… and if she sees a wedding taking place, in one of the many churches in Lucca, Mama Mia… she cannot stop herself from running over and taking a photo….

My guest today is Norma Jean Bishop. Some of you will know Norma Jean as the editor of the long established cultural magazine, Grapevine, which is THE GO-TO publication for anybody visiting, or living in and around Lucca. What you may not know however is that Norma Jean has Italian heritage, studied in Florence, and after living in Paris for a spell, moved with her family to the Province of Lucca to make it a permanent base nearly 30 years ago. As a consequence, she has many interesting stories and experiences to share and makes a fascinating guest.

My guest this week is Kari Marchen Anderson. I met Kari during one of my trips to Lucca in 2021. As happens in Lucca, chance meetings are the start of great friendships. Kari is from Copenhagen and speaks both Danish and English, fluently, and she is married to Bill, an American. They recently became ‘empty nesters’, and rather than downsize and remain in Copenhagen, they decided to relocate to Lucca, and in the process gained their residency, which proved to be a relatively smooth transition.

My guest today is Andrea Paganelli, the name probably gives away that Andrea is a native Italian. Andrea and his family own their own private driving company, Tuscan Drivers. He has a fleet of vehicles that do tours, day trips and airport runs, and this is how I first met Andrea. He collected me at Pisa airport from my flight, late at night. I was on my own, and although I had previously visited Lucca, I had no idea where my apartment was. In that position, you need punctuality, reassurance and a friendly welcome and that is exactly what I got, in spades; needless to say, Andrea and his family have become firm friends of mine in Lucca.

My guest today is Sally Ramsey. Sally contacted me after listening to this podcast as she was planning to visit Lucca, and we arranged to meet up. I must say, that Lucca is the only place where I’ve experienced random strangers, with a love of the city, arranging to meet up and share experiences. Even though Sally is based in the USA, she and I have become really good friends. So, I was delighted when she agreed to be interviewed for this podcast when we were both in Lucca back in September 2021, as her experiences are so relevant to anyone who is hoping to visit, or increase the time they spend in Lucca, especially those of you travelling from afar. Significantly, you will hear how each time Sally visits Lucca, her friendship base grows and the length of her stay increases.

My guests this week are Ilene and Gary Modica. In 2010 they left Phoenix, Arizona for a holiday in Italy, and this was not only the start of a love affair with Italy, but also the start of many amazing adventures. I interviewed Ilene and Gary in September 2021, and they revealed that they had travelled to 86 Italian towns and cities, before choosing Lucca as their ‘forever home’. They have documented their travels and adventures and are award winning bloggers, and co-authors of the books, Our Italian Journey, and When your Heart finds its Home. This is a really engaging, open and honest interview in which Ilene and Gary discuss the highs and lows of setting up home in a new country, along with their experience of seeking dual citizenship through Gary’s Italian ancestry.

Ilene & Gary’s Recommendations

Osteria da Pasqualino Gubitosa, Via del Moro, 8

Pizzeria Mara Meo, Piazza San Francesco, 17

Vinarkia della Pavona, Via Fillungo, 188

Momo Gelati, Via della Fratta, 11

The Walls - walk or cycle

Duomo San Martino, Piazza Antelminelli

Piazza Napoleone - The Carousel

Piazza Michele - try a piece of Buccellato at the cafe and cake shop Buccellato Taddeucci

Via Fillungo - walk to the Anfiteatro, Piazza dell’ Anfiteatro

The Guinigi Tower, take in the outside before climbing to the top, Via Sant’Andrea, 41

Palazzo Pfanner, Via degli Asili, 33

Puccini Museum, Corte San Lorenzo, 9

Just walk and ‘go and get lost’ in Lucca

Favourite Italian word/phrase

Allora - so/and/well/now (a filler word)

Connect with Ilene & Gary

Book: Our Italian Journey

Book: When your Heart finds its Home: The Journey Continues

Blog: https://ouritalianjourney.com

www.pinterest.com/imodica

www.instagram.com/italianjourney/

www.facebook.com/ouritalianjourney

www.twitter.com/IleneModica

About the Host

Andrea has travelled the length and breadth of Italy.
