She also later undertook a Masters Degree in Industrial Design at RMIT University. Eight years ago Leamon along with her colleague Ewan McEoin were awarded the positions of the Hugh Williamson Curators at the National Gallery of Victoria and recently included the inaugural Design Fair as part of Melbourne Design Week.

Described by the media as ‘arguably the most creative force in Australian fashion’, and ‘the man responsible for teaching us how to wear black’, Joseph Saba is an icon of Australian fashion.

Joe opened his first store, the ‘Joseph Saba Shirt and Sweater Shop’ in Flinders Lane in 1965. He went on to create the famous Staggers jeans label, which revolutionised jeans in Australia in the 1970’s. He introduced his now famous Saba brand in 1974, building the business up to 17 stores, including a store in New York, before selling the Saba business in 2002.

Joe’s most recent success was with his online and wholesale label Joseph Saba, a lifestyle range of womens clothing consisting of Joe's signature knitwear and jersey pieces, for easy relaxed dressing.

Architects Franco Fiorentini and Frank Marioli share a long history. Both went to the same high school and the same university.

They established F2 (the two Franks) and have been working on master planning, offices, together with high end retail and bespoke houses. They recently completed the Marais fashion store at the top of Bourke Street and Paul Smith's flagship store in Collins Street Melbourne.

Tom Evangelidis - Talking Design 2014, Ep 18

Photographer Tom Evangelidis started out in fashion photography, photographing many of London's top models. However, after returning to Sydney, he was drawn to architecture, particularly buildings that have developed a rich patina over time. His interests have taken him to many cities in Eastern Europe, where a building's decay is beautifully captured. Evangelidis also runs the Black Eye Gallery in Darlinghurst, Sydney, where he shows some of the work of leading photographers, including Robyn Beeche.

Robert Baines, Gold And Silversmith - Interview With Vincent O'Donnell On Arts Alive

Dr. Robert Baines is emeritus professor of RMIT University in the School of Art. His multi-disciplinary research is comprised of three areas: first as an artist goldsmith; second in archaeometallurgy; and third in publishing text and commentary. In 1979 he received a Winston Churchill Study Grant and this has been followed by Senior Fulbright and two Senior Andrew Mellon Conservation Fellowships at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and in 2008 a research scholarship in The Sherman Fairchild Center for Objects Conservation at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

His work as an exhibiting artist goldsmith is collected in prestigious public collections in Great Britain, Germany, France, New Zealand, USA and Australia such as The Metropolitan Museum of Art NY; Musee des Arts Decoratifs, Paris; Schmuckmuseum, Pforzheim; Victoria and Albert Museum, London; Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe, Hamburg; Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; and the National Gallery of Australia.

A Preview Of The Walter Van Beirendonck At RMIT University - Talking Design 2013 - Ep08

Professor Margaret Gardner AO is the Vice-Chancellor and President of RMIT University and Naomi Milgrom Executive Chair & CEO of Suzanne Group talking to Stephen Crafti about the upcoming Walter Van Beirendonck exhibition. Van Beirendonck's exhibition, which first opened in Antwerp, will be showcased at RMIT University's Design Hub from 15th July until the end of October.

The first major retrospective of the work of Antwerp designer and fashion maverick Walter Van Beirendonck, will be held at RMIT University's new $80 million Design Hub, thanks to the philanthropic leadership in design of Naomi Milgrom AO.

Created by Antwerp Fashion Museum, Dream the World Awake is the jewel in the crown of the Design Hub's inaugural events program for 2013, and the first time this daring and innovative exhibition has travelled outside Belgium.

RMIT University Vice Chancellor and President, Professor Margaret Gardner AO, says the support of visionary philanthropic leaders such as Ms Milgrom provides remarkable opportunities for RMIT's students and staff, as well as Australia's design community that would otherwise not be possible.

"We are delighted to be working in partnership with Ms Milgrom on this significant exhibition, which comes to Melbourne in July next year and will make RMIT's Design Hub truly come alive," Professor Gardner said.

"Ms Milgrom shares our vision for developing extraordinary opportunities for the next generation of Australian designers. With this major gift, she builds upon her notable links with RMIT and continues the legacy of philanthropy that the University was founded on."

Ms Milgrom says the outstanding architecture and cultural and academic vision for the new Design Hub at RMIT inspired her to champion this major international and multifaceted design initiative for its opening.

"Dream the World Awake, which celebrates three decades of Van Beirendonck's career, is a marvellous collaborative project that will engage a diverse design audience and enhance RMIT's global design stature," Ms Milgrom said.

A maverick fashion design leader and the inspirational Head of Fashion at Antwerp's Royal Academy of Fine Art - one of the top five fashion schools in the world, Walter Van Beirendonck is known for his spectacular Paris fashion shows and diverse sources of inspiration in his work, ranging from technology, fine art and pop culture to ethnographic sources.

RMIT's Associate Professor Robyn Healy, School of Fashion and Textiles says this high profile design exhibition highlights cross-disciplinary collaboration, a key aspect of the Design Hub philosophy. "It is a significant exhibition for RMIT, for Melbourne and for Australia, and is perfectly aligned with RMIT's cutting-edge design and fashion education and research," she said.

Naomi Milgrom is the owner of a group of companies that includes retail brands Sportsgirl, Sussan and Suzanne Grae. She is a distinguished philanthropist, business leader, and mentor to a wide range of arts and scientific organisations, and a strong advocate of contemporary art, architecture and design.

Joseph Saba, Australian Fashion Designer - Talking Design 2013 - Ep03

Described by the media as ‘arguably the most creative force in Australian fashion’, and ‘the man responsible for teaching us how to wear black’, Joseph Saba is an icon of Australian fashion.

Joe was included in the Australia Post ‘Australian Legends of Fashion’ postage stamp series in January 2005. The Australia Post ‘Legends’ are the only living people, apart from the monarchy, to appear on a stamp. Some of Joe’s designs are archived in the Powerhouse Museum (Sydney) and the National Gallery of Victoria (Melbourne).

He now enjoys consulting on various fashion projects. He also takes a keen interest in young up and coming designers and fashion students and enjoys passing his knowledge and experience on to the next generation of great Australian designers.

Following a BA in Industrial design at RMIT, Hugo worked for 4 years in Europe and the UK. In 1992 Hugo founded Catalyst Design Group Pty Ltd. Since then Catalyst has designed and delivered consumer, electronic, telecommunications and sporting products from feasibility through concept, engineering right through to manufacture and supply.

Catalyst now has the reputation as one of Australia’s leading Industrial Design and Brand Development companies. Its has the unique capability of taking products from establishing need, through all aspects of design and usability, Product Engineering, production management all the way to retail strategy and how products should resonate with wholesalers, retailers and customer alike.

In 2002, with partner Malcolm, Hugo established KNOG Pty. Ltd. and launched their proprietary products onto the global market in over 50 countries throughout the world. A cycling accessories brand, KNOG now manufactures, facilitates and supplies over 200 unique products, to independent, online and dedicated retail stores.

Hugo has been the recipient of over 30 National and International design awards including Winning the 2007 Australian Design award, 4 European IF Awards, the ISPO brand new Award and Red Dot award.

Fashion Designer Sir Paul Smith - Talking Design 2012 - Ep15

Paul Smith’s introduction into fashion was completely accidental.

At the age of 16, with no career plans or qualifications, Paul Smith was propelled by his father into a menial job at the local clothing warehouse in his native Nottingham. However his real passion was sport and his ambition was to become a professional racing cyclist, until aged 17 years when cycling-mad Paul was in a terrible accident.

Six months in hospital followed and during this time Paul made some new friends. After leaving hospital he arranged to meet them again and by chance the meeting place was a local pub that was popular with the students from the local art college.

They talked of Mondrian, Warhol, Kokoshka, David Bailey and listened to the Rolling Stones, Miles Davis and much more. It was then Paul knew he wanted to be a part of this colourful world of ideas and excitement.

Within two years, Paul Smith was managing his first boutique in Nottingham and with the encouragement of his girlfriend Pauline Denyer (now wife) and a small amount of savings, opened a tiny shop in 1970. Paul started to take evening classes for tailoring and with the help of Pauline (an RCA fashion graduate), Paul was able to create what he wanted. By 1976 Paul showed his first menswear collection in Paris under the Paul Smith label.

In business for over 40 years Paul Smith had established himself as the pre-eminent British designer. Paul Smith has an ability to anticipate, and even spark off trends not only fashion but in the wider context of popular culture. He manages to transmit a genuine sense of humour and mischief mixed with his love of tradition and the classics

Today there are 14 different collections; Paul Smith for men and women, PS by Paul Smith, Paul Smith Jeans, Paul Smith London, R.Newbold (Japan only), Paul Smith Black, Paul by Paul Smith, Paul Smith Accessories, Paul Smith Shoe. Paul Smith rugs, china, spectacles and fragrance are made under license. Designed in Nottingham and London, the Paul Smith collections are primarily produced in England and Italy while the fabrics used are mainly of Italian, French and British origin.

The Paul Smith shops reflect the character of Paul and his designs, an unmistakable Englishness augmented by the unexpected. Each and every Paul Smith shop is totally different, from a shocking pink building with movie set styling on Melrose Avenue, LA, to a Japanese garden at the heart of the Jingumae store in Tokyo. Each shop is a showcase for diverse and eccentric objects complementing the clothing collections with an extensive selection of jewellery, books, art and antiques.

Paul explains his eclectic aesthetic: “We’re a leading and uniquely British brand. We mix up one-off antiques with high quality tailoring: the chair you sit on when you buy a suit is for sale and we can wrap the suit and have the chair waiting for you when you get home.”

Ducks, Dolls and Divine Robots: designing our futures with computing

A public lecture by Dr Genevieve Bell

We have relationships with technology – we always have had. And these relationships have regularly strayed beyond the merely functional, or rational. Whether anthropomorphising all manner of objects from steamships to guitars, or systematically attacking and breaking machines out of fear and loathing, we have had strong emotional connections with technology. Furthermore, this emotionality is not only borne out of daily activity, it also has its origins in the realm of fiction, myth and even legend. As such we can tell a story where Excalibur, the Luddites, The Turing Test and Cyberdyne share a common genealogy – they are all about our relationships with technology.

Today we inhabit a world in which there are many pieces of technology in our lives, our homes and our places of work, worship and leisure. Early mechanized objects like looms, pianolas and wireless radios have given way to digitally connected computational devices, but have we developed a new emotional register with which to engage with these objects? In this talk, Genevieve offers a meditation on the nature of our relationships with computing, locating them within this larger conversation, and offering a much wider space for human-computer relationships to flourish.

Joost was raised on a farm in Monbulk Victoria. Originally from Holland, Joost started using recycled materials such as steel to create planter stands for flower and plant displays in cafes, bars and restaurants. While he continues to create extraordinary installations, he has literally taken on the world with his greenhouses. These greenhouses showcase what can be done by using recycled building materials. Customers are served organic produce and sit on chairs made from recycled materials. These pop-up cafes in Melbourne, Sydney and Perth have made people think about a more sustainable future. Joost is currently liasing with London authorities in bring the greenhouse to a larger audience.
