Kelly and Matt dissect what was the 98th Oscars which took place in Los Angeles this weekend. Firstly, Kelly is over the moon for fellow-Killarney woman Jessie Buckley - who picked up the Best Actress award for her role in Hamnet. Matt talks about the most uncontroversial ceremony including who the big winners were but also who missed out. Kelly talks about the stories that inspired from the awards and the team ponder how much of the judging is legitimate and based on world events and whether conspiracy theories are best avoided.

Oscar time is here again and the team discuss the big awards and make their predictions for what may be. The spend some time trying to figure out why certain films have made it in to the Best Picture category - do you agree?

Finally, Matt talks about some of the big shows, like Love Island and Britain's Got Talent who seem to be losing their edge. Kelly speculates we're all getting a bit jaded by these older formats.

Screen Babble is in a happy place with all the great TV that's knocking around at the moment. We couldn't not mention The Traitors but we don't dwell too long - and you'll hear about the complaints being made against the Irish version - now available on BBC iPlayer.

Kelly and Matt discuss their favourite rom-coms of all time from Sleepless in Seattle to the Princess Bride, by way of The Notebook and more. They also name their favourite on-screen couples of all time. It's a fairly hefty list already.

Matt takes us through some of the main frontrunners for the Oscars, in particular some of the nominations for Best Picture.

Finally, the team talks about February and what you can be enjoying on your sofa time. With the likes of Bridgerton and family favourites Gladiators and The Masked SInger making an appearance. But so too does The Apprentice and Kelly asks 'Should The Apprentice just go away and die?'

We are back with the first episode of Screen Babble 2025 - we've got longer episodes so more time to tell you about what TV and film you need to get into your life.

Benji, Matt and I (Kelly - hello!) kick off this episode by chatting about the really decent telly we watched over Christmas before moving to the important business of planning our viewing for 2025.

First up Matt takes us through what will be filling our small screens, everything from Celebrity Bear Hunt to The Residence and The Last of Us. Honorable mentions for many more TV shows coming out throughout the year.

Benji then talks film with a focus on some of the big hitters we can expect in 2025 including Superman, Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning and 28 Years Later - excited!

Screen Babble the return! What to Watch at Christmas and Best of 2024

Screen Babble is back! We're returning for a new series with longer episodes coming at you once a month. Join host Kelly Crichton and National World TV critics Benjamin Jackson and Matt Mohan-Hickson to hear about what you need to be watching. This episode is all about Christmas. Benji brings you all the movies you need to check out both the big hitters like Wicked but also some classiCs - don't mention Die Hard anyone.

Matt has been sussing out what's coming up TV wise and he'lk have all the chat on Christmas specials like Gavin and Stacey as well as some other bits and bobs to check out.

Kelly is bringing you the major storylines you can expect from the soaps as well as things the kiddos in your life may enjoy like CBeebies Panto and the new animated film of Tiddler, Julia Donaldson's book.

Finally, we wrap this episode up with a debrief on 2024 and the TV and film we loved the most - so there may be some tips in there for you too.

This Town, Passenger, Wrestlemania 40, Man Down and The Underdog: Josh Must Win

This week Benji get's us started with one of his favourites, yes, you guessed it, wrestling and why not? The team consider the phenomenon that is modern day wrestling. Phil has been watching new ITV drama Passenger, which he's still making his mind up about. A more reliable watch, he's been enjoying, again, is ER. We love ER.

Kelly started watching The Long Good Friday on Good Friday but fell asleep and was extended into Easter Saturday - she muses on the impact on the film. She's also started This Town which she believes is gonna be great - from Steven Knight who also made Peaky Blinders.

On the 'deep dive' this week Phil takes us through the new E4 show The Underdog: Josh Must Win - apparently a subversion of the reality show genre.

Finally, Benji tells us all about Man Down, a comedy starting Greg Davies and the late Rik Mayall - one for ages.

We have a new face on Screen Babble today, Kelly and Benji are joined by TV writer Phillip Cunnington. Philip kicks us off with what he's been watching, namely The Hunted on Channel 4. Benji tells us why there's more to Ryan Gosling than we may think, using the example of his role in The Believer where he plays a Jewish Neo-Nazi.

Kelly's been watching ITV's The Way, a dystopian drama about a break down in 'normal' law and order in Wales as well as Buried: The 1982 Alpine Meadows Avalanche on Netflix.

On the 'deep dive' Benji takes us through the BAFTA TV award nominations and hazards a few predictions. Philip talks to us about The Last Kingdom on this week's 'back to the future' which, with 5 series and a film, will keep you going for some time.

In fact so has Steven - everyone is excited for this new release. Steven has also delved into sitcom history with 50 Storeys High which was co-written and starred Sean Locke.

Kelly has finished True Detective and was surprised she really enjoyed it - as did Benji who was less surprised. Kelly also watched Breathtaking last week, the 3 part ITV drama from Jed Mercurio which she found a tough watch but well worth it.

Steven introduces us to The Completely Made-Up Adventures of Dick Turpin, Noel Fielding's new venture with Apple TV.

Finally, Benji takes us back to the future with Spaced, a British comedy classic.

This week Benji get's us off the ground with his Jodie Foster appreciation club - he's been catching up on some of her past appearances in advance of True Detective Series 4 coming to our screens this week. He enjoyed Silence of the Lambs best and found Hannibal more endearing than some of those involved in the post office scandal - he's also been re-watching Mr Bates Vs. The Post Office.

Steven has been to the ceinma this week to see The Boy and The Heron and well, he was never one for anime in the first place but let's just say it didn't go well...hear why on the podcast.

Kelly is continuing with The Traitors which she describes as good 'screen at the telly' telly.

On the deep dive his week Benji takes us through True Detective series 4 having just watched the first 4 episodes. We believe we're in for a good one here.

Steven rounds off the show with a review of 'See' starring Jason Momoa on Apple TV - as well as a mini-critique of Apple as a streaming platform.

Christmas TV preview special - from kids' favourites to films, soaps, specials and much more

Yay! It's here, the Screen Babble Christmas TV and streaming preview. Kelly, Benji and Steven will take you through the best of film and TV that will be coming to the small and big screens in the coming weeks.

First up Steven talks films including, The Heist Before Christmas (Sky Max, date tbc), It's a Wonderful Knife (Amazon Prime) and one of the most hotly anticipated films of the year, Wonka (cinemas from 8 December).

Kelly gives us the low down on kids TV including the annual return of the Julia Donaldson/Axel Scheffler book based animation. This year Tabby McTat will grace our screens, much to the delight of many kids and adults around the country.

CBeebies panto also returns with all your favourite CBeebies presenters and characters. This year the gang takes on Robin Hood - always a fun watch for the whole family. Both BBC productions have not yet had their broadcast dates announced but will air in and around Christmas. The team will update you on Weekend Watch once dates are confirmed.

Another great family watch this year is Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget which is coming to Netflix on December 15.

Benji takes on the big guns and tells us about this year's Christmas specials. Call the Midwife returns as ever as well as a new addition for this year - the Brassic Christmas Special. Benji tells us all about these two very different programmes as well as the Dr Who Christmas Special which is also hotly anticipated when we may or may not see the Dr transform into his new guise.

Finally, Kelly takes us through a Chrismtas institution - the soaps and the big story lines they run over the Christmas period and in particular on Christmas day.

There is plenty of food for thought for you viewing pleasure this festive season - so get the planner out now!

Killer, The Royal Hotel, Killers of the Flower Moon and The Sopranos

In fabulous news this week we can announce our new co-host - Benjamin Jackson. And although he has big boots to fill (we miss you Alex) we are delighted to have Benji on board and we know you enjoy his take on TV and film too.

First up this week Steven tells us about not one, not two but three films he went to see in the cinema this week. He tells us all about Martin Scorcese's new flick 'Killers of the Flower Moon', which is 3 and a half hours long! Steven has mixed feelings about it, hear why on the podcast. He talks to us about Michael Fassbender's new 'revenge' film 'Killer' and borderline thriller 'The Royal Hotel' about two female backpackers who get stranded in a male-dominated, pretty hostile environment in the Australian outback.

Benji has been catching up on 'What we do in the Shadows' which he recommends big time. This is the TV series rather than the film (although he loves both). Matt Berry gets a special mention for his wonderful mispronunciations throughout.

Kelly just finished The Bear Season 1 and absolutely loved the season finale, she's started season 2 already. She also finished Boiling Point and really enjoyed that too despite the constant state of anxiety it induces when you're watching it.

On this week's 'deep dive' Steven tells us about the new reality game show '007: Road to a million' which sees Brian Cox star as a shady quiz master ushering contestants around Europe in search of answers to clues he gives them - Challenge Anneka meets Survivor meets The Traitors - or something.

Finally, and we've been waiting for this moment for a long time, we talk about the legend that is The Sopranos. Now, we fully acknowledge we could make a whole podcast series of this groundbreaking TV series but we do our best to offer our appreciation up in our limited time. Benji tells us why he thinks it made such an impact and remains, to this day, one of the most influential TV programmes of all time.

Time, Friends, Wheel of Time, Cunk on Earth and JFK: One Day in America

This week Steven has been rewatching some old Friends episodes following the passing of Matthew Perry. The team is sad to see him go for his work that impacted our lives but also for the way he helped other people in real life to deal with addiction issues.

Steven has also been watching Time, as has Kelly, and they both have enjoyed it immensely. The second series of Jimmy McGovern's prison drama contains many a criticism of the system and poses some difficult questions. There are some stellar acting performances too, Bella Ramsey deserves particular mention for their excellent portrayal of a pregnant drug addict inmate Kelsey. You'll hear more of their thoughts on the podcast about whether the series might return too for a series three.

Simon Cutler joins the team today and he's been watching Cunk on Earth and Wheel of Time - two very different shows. Hear what Simon reckons of both.

Kelly also recommends the Amazon Prime documentary on women's rugby in England, No Woman, No Try, which looks at the challenges and progress within the sport.

On the 'deep dive' this week Steven's positive streak comes to a dismal end with his review of JFK: One Day in America - National Geographic's documentary to mark 60 years since the assasination.

Simon takes us 'back to the future' reviewing Garth Meranghi's Darkplace - a good one for the week that's in it and probably a lot less scary than much of what's on TV at the moment.

Bodies, Community, Boiling Point and Scrubs

We start this week's podcast as we always do - talking about what we're watching. Steven is blitzing Scrubs, which may or may not be affecting his work/life balance.

The highlight of her viewing recently has been the first episode of Boiling Point, which is a very stressful but enticing watch nonetheless.

On the 'deep dive' this week Steven tells us about new Netflix period crime drama sci-fi crossover Bodies. It's got it all going on.

Finally, Craig takes us 'back to the future' with Community, if you like films and you like comedy this is for you - stars a few big hitters too and started way back in 2009. Film coming next year too apparently.

Screen Babble returns to normal this week and we kick off as ever with what we've been watching recently Steven checked out Partygate, the Channel 4 drama based on the misbehaviour in Downing Street during the pandemic. He's also checking out and enjoying Crime season 2.

Benji has taken a chance on Loki and is pleased to report he believes this may just be the saviour of us all from superhero fatigue. He thinks it's more like a thriller/mystery than what you'd usually expect. He's also enjoying watching Severance again whilst anticipating a new series in 2024.

Kelly has started The Reckoning, the BBC's new drama about Jimmy Saville which is well made but raises questions around BBC impartiality and their place in the story, the team discuss. Also, we couldn't not mention the return of Big Brother, Kelly is pleased to see the return but wonders whether it's still up her street.

Steven tells us about The Fall of the House of Usher, out now on Netflix on the deep dive. Benji brings us an oldie but goodie in the form of vampire slaying teens - yes, you guess it - it's Buffy the Vampire Slayer. A cult classic.

What to watch this autumn - Gen V, Boiling Point, Dr Who, Frasier and Squid Game: The Challenge

This week we have a slightly different set up. We are focusing on five things you should have in your TV diary for the coming autumn and winter months.

Gen V, spin off of superhero series The Boys is up first. Set after season 3 of The Boys. Steven takes us through what to expect including a lot of violence. The first three episodes came out on Amazon Prime on 29th September with weekly episodes ongoing.

Kelly looks forward to Boiling Point, a TV series based on the 2021 film starring Stephen Graham. Graham is back as producer and starring with much of the same cast as the film alongside some more new faces. The new series is set to pick up 6 months after where the film finished and we see head chef Carly running a new restaurant whilst Andy continues to deal with his issues. We are excited for this one - no date to air yet but it will be on BBC1 when it does materialise.

Dr Who returns this autumn with three special episodes. David Tenant is back as the Doctor in advance of meeting the new Doctor at Christmas who will be played by Ncuti Gatwa with a new series coming back to BBC in February 2024.

Frasier returns too this autumn with some old faces as well as some new ones including Nicholas Lyndhurst. The new series is set in Boston, the birthplace of Frasier the character way back in the early 80s in Cheers. Frasier is now living on campus and teaching and there will be plenty of hijinx with his son and nephew in toe. This comes to Paramount+ on the 12th of October.

Finally Steven tells us about Squid Game: The Challenge - a reality competition show based on the Netflix series Squid Game from last year that was a massive success. Contestants will compete in similar challenges to the series but with the death element - hopefully anyway. There's a huge prize pot of £3.65million so it's gonna be interesting. Benji has been bingeing on wrestling and he tells us why it's a legitimate form of entertainment. Craig has been watching Yellowjackets and Kelly has been all over the place but gives two big recommendations for Netflix thriller (in German) Dear Child and About Time, a recent Channel 5 film.

Benji takes on the 'deep dive' this week and tells us about the new Netflix anime Castlevania Nocturne, one for anyone who likes a good vampire slaying adventure. Craig takes us 'back to the future' to talk about Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency and does a pretty good job at selling it to us!

This week Kelly and Steven are joined by Mark Dunford, Editor of the Crawley Observer. The team have enjoyed a wide range of TV and film this week. Steven shares the dark and light. The light in the form of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. Steven is enjoying the new season much more than the last and we debate whether it would be better to burn out than fade away. The dark is brought by Dispatches' documentary Russell Brand: In Plain Sight which Kelly watched too. The team discusses the challenges of making such documentaries.

Mark has been to the cinema a few times this week and tells us about the next installment of Kenneth Brannagh's Poirot, A Haunting in Venice which he thoroughly enjoyed - find out why. Kelly has sacked off a few programmes that were going nowhere and to her shame started Below Deck - listen as Steven passes out with exasperation.

On the 'deep dive' Steven brings us up to speed with Sex Education as its fourth and final series lands. Having watched the new series it's a big thumbs up from Steven as he explains on this week's episode.

Finally, Mark takes us 'back to the future' with an absolute, all-time classic, The West Wing. Find out what made it so good and why it's still a quality watch nearly 20 years later.

The Tower, Welcome to Wrexham, Fleabag and Outside In

This week on Screen Babble host Kelly is joined by resident TV Critic Steven Ross and National World reporter Hiyah Zaidi. We start with our usual chat around what we've been watching. Steven took Benji's recommendation from last week and has been catching up on Arrested Development and been surprised by Michael Cere's role in it. Hiyah has been catching up on Schitt's Creek and Annika as she enjoys a crime drama - this one, she says, has a slightly different format that goes into more detail.

Kelly finished series one of The Tower, another crime drama with a reflexive feel where much of the wrong-doing is in fact done by the police. She also watched Outside In on Netflix, starring Edie Falco and Jay Duplass. It's the story of a man who gets released from prison after 20 years of being wrongly incarcerated. It follows his struggle to reconnect with friends and family as well as his obsession with the woman who helped set him free, who happens to be his ex-high school teacher.

On the deep dive Steven tells us about Welcome to Wrexham which is returning for a second series following the wild success of season one. It continues the story of the football club, starting at the beginning of last year's football season. Steven highlights an episode that focuses on the women's team, which he predicts may cause a stir.

Finally for back to the future Hiyah takes us through the classic that is Fleabag. The two season British sitcom written and starring Phoebe Waller Bridge was a huge hit when it aired. Big recommendations for this one from Hiyah and Kelly.

Only Murders in the Building, Attack on Titan, Taggart and London Bridge: Facing Terror

The first week of the new regime is here and Kelly and Steven are joined by Paul Trainer, Editor of Glasgow to join us as guest host. Steven tells us about the anime series he's been watching Attack on Titan (Crunchy Roll), which he is enjoying very much. He also watched Bad Times at the El Royale (Disney +) - not so happy with this one. Paul is keeping up with the new series of Only Murders in the Building(Disney+), he's enjoying 'appointment' television. He's also been catching up on Ashoka(Disney+) but the continuing expansion of the Star Wars universe is challenging.

Kelly seems to have spent the whole week watching television but tells us more about Channel 4 documentary London Bridge: Facing Terror which covers the terror attack in 2017. A very interesting and challenging documentary which sees the people involved in the attack share their story on screen.

Steven takes us through Classic Movies: The Story Of on the 'deep dive' a new series to Sky Arts which basically does what it says on the tin. Paul suggests The Movies that Made Us on Netflix as an alternative.

Paul tells us about Taggart on 'back to the future' as it celebrates its 40th birthday this week, available in lots of places including ITVX. You can find out more about the Taggart archive Kelly mentions here.

Alex talks about new BBC drama Champion which he is really enjoying and Kelly tells us about The Stranger, a film new to Netflix and really rather good.

Alex fills us in on what's going on with the actors strike in LA and it's pretty clear there needs to be some change in the industry considering some of the basic support they are looking for.

On the 'deep dive' Alex tells us about new drama 'Fifteen Love' and interviews its stars Aidan Turner and Ella Lily Hyland.

Kelly watched Pamela, a Love Story which she found kinda informative and Right Here, Right Now - the documentary about Fat Boy Slim's big gig on Brighton Beach in 2002 and found it kinda lacking but good for nostalgia purposes.

In the deep dive this week Alex tells us all about The Gold, starting on BBC1 next Sunday night. Steven gives us the low down on Scream Queens on Disney+ - spoiler alert he doesn't like the uber celeb appearances in this programme.

Hunters, The Last of Us, Spector and more

Now that we're settling into real life again we're back onto recommending the best in telly for listeners. In our chat about what we've been watching Steven tells us about People Just Do Nothing, a comedy series and brings in the big hitters he's been treated to by his local independent cinema Citizen Kane and Rashomon. Alex has been enjoying The Rig, a supernatural thriller with many excellent Scottish actors and in a completely different genre he's also been enjoying Sex Lives of College Girls. Kelly tells us about Spector which she has just started a documentary on the life of Phil Spector, a famous music producer jailed for murder in 2009.

This week's 'deep dive' is into The Last of US, HBO horror/drama starting this weekend on Sky. It' about a mushroom zombie post-apocalyptic travelogue with Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey. Sounds like one to watch for sure.

Finally Steven takes us back to the future in his review of Hunters - which is about to start a new series on Amazon Prime. This is a dark comedy about nazi-hunters in the 1970s which has some problems that Steven shares with us but ultimately he enjoyed watching.

On this episode we have once again ignored the rule book and we are bringing you our picks of the best telly of 2022. We loved putting this episode together to share the best of TV and streaming this year across lots of different genres.

You'll hear us chat about our best new series which included SAS Rogue Heroes, Make Me PM, This is Going to Hurt and Bad Sisters.

We talk about returning series and our picks for this category include Peaky Blinders, Bloods 2, Better Call Saul and Stranger Things.

Sadly, it has to be acknowledged, sometimes we end up watching some lemons - our sad shows of the year include Killing Eve and Always Sunny in Philadelphia - shocker.

Finally, we talk about hidden gems, our fave shows that didn't seem to be hitting the big time, these include Hacks, Minx and The Split.

We cover about 20 shows in this podcast so we hope you'll find something new you'll love too.
