And it is not just an environmental issue; it's a human issue, affecting every aspect of our lives from the air we breathe to the food we eat, and the stability of our economies and communities. As we navigate through the complexities of climate science, policy, and action, we are honored to be joined by a truly inspiring guest in this week's episode, activist Mitch Pope.

Mitch is an environmental and climate activist who is currently using social media to try to spread awareness about the climate crisis, as well as being part of groups and coalitions advocating for an end to offshore oil and gas exploration in Australia. Mitch grew up in and around the ocean, surfing and diving, which has naturally progressed to a deep connection and love for the ocean and natural environmental, as well as an understanding of the need for us all to stand up and do more to protect this one planet we call home.

The Unbiased Benefits of AI Systems and The Future of Technology ft. Michael Timothy Bennett

It's a friends' reunion! Join our conversation with Computer Scientist, Researcher and long-time pal Michael Timothy Bennett in our latest episode of @thesoapyraoshow.

Michael is a computer scientist with the Australian National University. His research explores intelligence from first principles, blending philosophical arguments, math proofs and experimental results. He presented a unified theory of consciousness, meaning and artificial superintelligence at the 2023 conference on artificial general intelligence, for which he won a best paper award.

He has also been quoted and published by prominent news organizations including Newsweek, Quillette and The Conversation.

He was previously co-founder and COO of Eigen Technologies in London and has worked in game development across four continents on well-known franchises including The Sims, Sniper Elite and Total War. His path to research was circuitous, which helped cultivate the breadth of expertise needed for transdisciplinary artificial general intelligence research. He was first admitted to an undergraduate program on the basis of his musical ability, and now holds degrees in music from Queensland Conservatorium, management science from London Business School, and computer science from The Australian National University.

Rediscovering History and Exploring Modern India: Stories by Madhulika Liddle

On this week's episode, we have the incredible Madhulika Liddle. Madhulika is an author, historian, blogger and film enthusiast. Her first novel The Englishman’s Cameo was launched in October 2009, with a French edition released in 2010 by Editions Philippe Picquier. The Englishman’s Cameo was well received and was followed by The Eighth Guest & Other Muzaffar Jang Mysteries (a collection of short stories), Engraved in Stone, and Crimson City (the latter two novels).

Madhulika has written a range of short stories in different genres. Several of these have won awards (including the Commonwealth Broadcasting Association Awards Short Story Competition, for A Morning Swim, in 2003) or have been selected for anthologies.

Madhulika's non-fiction writing includes travel writing, humor, and writing on classic cinema. Her blog Dusted Off is a compilation of all things beloved and 'old' or, in her own words, "everything dusted off, not just old movies."

Anuja Ghosalkar is a Bangalore based artist. She is the founder of Drama Queen, a Documentary theatre company, that focusses on personal histories & archival absences to extend the idea of theatre to create audacious work. Undocumented narratives, gender in performance, research and iterations around form and process are critical to her performance and pedagogical work. She was artist-in-residence at Art Lab Gnesta, Sweden (2015), and Srishti Institute of Art Design & Technology, Bangalore (2017). Anuja is the co-curator of the international workshop series on Documentary Theatre with her German collaborator––that programmed artists like Boris Nikitin, Rimini Protokoll, Zhao Chuan and Gobsquad. As visiting faculty at Srishti Institute of Art, Design and Technology since 2016, she leads practice-based pedagogy. In the past, she was programme officer at India Foundation for the Arts, film programmer for Experimenta and India researcher for University of Westminster. She is an Art Think South Asia Fellow (2017-18) and has written on film and performance for Nang Magazine, Art India, Bioscope, Hakara, Scroll, and Ladies Finger.

Prasenjeet holds a masters degree in molecular biology and has pursued research in molecular ecology for several years at National Centre for Biological Sciences in Bangalore, India. Early in his scientific career, he realized that his real passion lay in storytelling. He now combines his experience in research with his photography skills to popularize ecological and conservation sciences in the wider society. Prasenjeet is one of the very few photographers who integrates science deeply into his photo stories. He chooses ignored subjects, landscapes, and species and find ways to develop engaging and accessible photos. For every story, he collaborates with researchers, managers, policymakers as well as conservationists. Along with the larger stories, he also produces stories that are directed at specific audiences who have the power to create lasting change.

Abhijeet Tambe is a musician and sound designer based out of Bangalore, India. He holds an M.S. in Music Engineering from the University of Miami in Florida. He currently scores music and designs sound for film and theatre.

Early in his career Abhijeet designed algorithms and wrote software for audio products. The companies he worked with include Cirrus Logic (Austin, Texas), Samsung (Bangalore), and InDSP (Bangalore). Josh Misner started college at Washington State University as a physics major, partly because he thought he wanted to pursue theoretical physics as a career after having worked in research and development for a manufacturing company. His first calculus class cured him of that desire.

After deciding to have a third child, he along with his family moved to the Coeur d’Alene, Idaho area, where he transferred to North Idaho College. That was where he fell in love with the academic field of communication.

He then transferred to Gonzaga University, where he fell in love with the Jesuit model of education, and he never left. He earned his BA, MA, and Ph.D. from Gonzaga, all in the field of communication, with a taste of leadership studies thrown in for good measure.

He is currently a learning & development consultant for Visible Wireless.

We are seeing more and more people giving up their complex identities to become a part of causes, movements, ideologies, or groups. Well whatever you may call these collectives, when the purpose is taken away and people adopt the group's identity as their own it spells trouble for all.
In this episode, I look a the transformation of groups into mobs, the problem with this way of thinking, the fear of not being accepted by a group and how people manipulate people's ignorance to their advantage.

The drama and the confusion on their end is ridiculous yet sadly reflective of the state in which most institutions are dealing with this pandemic in.
