Tim Bouverie is Phil’s guest and he tales us through some of the terrific - and little known - stories in his new book Allies At War. 

Although London and Paris are firm allies when Nazi Germany invades France in May 1940, relationships soon fall apart and true disappears. Then, in July 1940, Winston Churchill - a lifelong francophile - takes the fateful decision to send the Royal Navy to attack the French fleet (to ensure it does not fall into Hitler’s hands). 1,300 French sailors, who had been allies of the British just weeks before, die in this attack.

There follows a series of military campaigns and diplomatic intrigues with the (often clashing) personalities of Charles de Gaulle and Winston Churchill at the heart of them all.

1945 The Reckoning is full of great and surprising stories and it speaks very directly to modern debates about empire, colonialism and race - and how we should remember and teach the history of both Britain and Australia. It suggests that the British government did some rather shameful and foolish things in the final months of the war, some of which involved Australian forces, because colonial agendas came to supersede earlier pledges about liberation and national self determination. 

That said this is far from being an anti-imperial rant, and it contains many inspiring stories of the men and women who confronted Naziism and Japanese militarism. Phil calls it a ‘warts and all’ account of how the war was really won.’

After four of her children died under the age of 20 months, Kathleen Folbigg was charged and convicted of their murder in 2003. After 20 year in prison she was freed after scientific discoveries and a new analysis of statistical probabilities revealed that at least two of the children probably died from natural causes and that there was never ANY direct forensic evidence linked her to any of the deaths.

As a reporter for the ABC Quentin played a major part in the campaign to have the case reopened, and he believes that Kathleen should never have even been brought to trial, even based on the knowledge of ‘cot death’ available in 2003.

Sir Robert Bruce Lockhart was an impressive figure: a diplomat, intelligence agent, conspirator, journalist and propagandist who played a key role in both world wars. A man whom the influential press baron Lord Beaverbook claimed ‘could well have been prime minister’. From a disastrously drunken wedding night, which nevertheless produced a princess, through years of mutual loathing, numerous affairs and illegitimate children (his), rumour of exotic foreign lovers (hers), political intrigues, popular protests and endless satirical cartoons and pamphlets to a final, farcical coronation ceremony in which the Queen of England was locked out of Westminster Abbey by the King’s own guards - this is quite a tale!

For two years Hooper faced a small army of private detectives, ex police, spin doctors and various other suspicious characters, all working for Fayed. There was an attempted entrapment, the suggestion of bribes being paid to serving police officers and endless pressure on witnesses. Peggy was probably the most significant collector of - and advocate for - the visual art of the 20th Century and she helped launch the careers of numerous internationally famous artists. She was also as renowned for her sexual exploits as her artistic ones, with a string of lovers and husbands that included some of the most famous men of the 20th Century, from Samuel Beckett to Max Ernst.

Born in the Soviet Union, and now a Senior Fellow at the Institute of Global Affairs at the London School of Economics, Peter has written two hugely influential books about the modern Russian state and how it exploits disinformation and propaganda to oppress and threaten its own people and its neighbours: Nothing Is True and Everything Is Possible (2014) and This Is Not Propaganda (2019).

His latest book, How to Win an Information War: The Propagandist Who Outwitted Hitler (2024), is about Sefton Delmer, a British propagandist of the Second World War.

When the Cass report into Britain’s treatment of gender questioning young people was welcomed by the UK Parliament last week, politicians from across the House of Commons praised Hannah for her work, and her book is credited with helping change the policy of the opposition Labour party (and possible next government) on this very divisive and controversial issue.

Hannah’s work explores how best to treat children who feel they are somehow living ‘in the wrong body’ and fear the changes of puberty. It asks whether the ‘instant affirmation followed by puberty blocking’ model is dangerous and might better be replaced by counselling and other therapies.
