I am a 5th-grade teacher in middle school. My district is using a blended learning model. We have 2 cohorts Tuesdays and Thursdays and Wednesdays and Fridays. I see 2 groups of students per day. I really miss putting the kids into groups to share their learning. I love group work and I am really struggling with how to make it work this year. Jessica Brogley currently teaches courses in educational technology in the School of Education at the University of Wisconsin Platteville. Prior to this, she served in the Platteville School District as the Instructional Technology Support Specialist and the Digital Communication Specialist for three years. Jessica cut her teeth as an 8-12th grade English Language Arts and College Credit Public Speaking for Seymour Community Schools in Seymour, Wisconsin for 11 years.Jessica is one of the few educators in Southwest Wisconsin who is a Google for Education Certified Trainer, Innovator, and Google Streetview Certified. Transfer back from the camera to phone: what to do. Retouch ($2 app) erases yourself out of the photo. Use Google Street View app: upload to google maps. Tiny Planet photography.

Kids write about aspects of the community. (Early standard in elementary.) Use camera: photograph police station, firehouse, city hall, school, etc. Publish to account. Use tour creator to write about the significance. They can’t write collaboratively but can take turns. (Fire department: didn’t know what certain things are. Study: what that is what does it do?) Tourist opportunity: where to enjoy an afternoon, historical locations, etc.

Matt’s recent post: 27 tips to deliver powerful professional development

• Share all sides of a tech tool: If you’re doing technology professional development, it’s always helpful for teachers to see the student side of a tool as well as the teacher side. If they can see how the initial setup works, that’s even better.
• Go deep rather than wide: “60 apps in 60 minutes.” I’ve attended these sessions at conferences. I’ve delivered them! Many times, I think they’re “edu-tainment” more than actual professional development. It just creates a passing familiarity with lots of apps rather than actual implementation and change. I love to go deep — learn a new strategy or tool, practice it, discuss implementation — rather than wide. Sticking on one or two impactful ideas is powerful. It can empower teachers to be ready to start using a new idea when they leave rather than just knowing about it.
• Use the meatloaf approach to PD: When we have meatloaf for dinner, my kids know what they are getting. They like the way meatloaf tastes. However, if my wife and I want to make the meatloaf a little more nutritious, we may grind up broccoli or cauliflower and sneak it into the mix. That way, they are getting the taste they want but also a little extra nutrition. Professional development should be the same way. If I’m talking about a teaching strategy or digital tool, I love to model it in a fun way. When I demonstrate Flipgrid, I ask teachers to record me videos of where I should eat dinner that evening. They learn the tool without even realizing they’ve learned it. The task can be fun and also teach them something. It’s kind of like mixing cauliflower into meatloaf.
• Use the problem/solution framework: Ask yourself, “What are the problems these educators face? What’s the problem that this solves?” Then, use that as a guide. Show them how your ideas solve that problem for them.
• They might forget what you said, but they won’t forget how you made them feel.” For many teachers, professional development is a drag. It makes them feel adequate. They might feel like the person leading PD doesn’t understand them and their situation. I take every opportunity to make them feel welcome. Appreciated. Capable. I smile a LOT. If someone struggles, I help them feel like the struggle is easily fixed. If they make a mistake, I help them to feel that it’s no big deal. If something goes wrong and it’s not their fault, I make sure they know it’s not their fault and they did everything as they were supposed to. Anxiety negatively affects our neurologically-based skills. Anything we can do to reduce anxiety — in adults and in children! — helps.

Add-ons are customized extensions of G Suite productivity applications such as Gmail, Google Sheets, and Google Docs. Add-ons are built using Apps Script—a rapid application development platform based on JavaScript that lets you create business and productivity applications quickly and easily.

With Add-ons you can do the following:

• Add customized functionality to G Suite applications such as Gmail.
• Boost your workflow efficiency when working with G Suite.
• Use Apps Script services to easily control and move data between Google applications.
• Connect to non-Google services within G Suite applications, allowing you to retrieve or upload data from those services into and from G Suite.
• Create custom interfaces (sidebars, menus, and dialogs) that are displayed within the G Suite application the add-on extends, potentially removing the need for a user to switch browser tabs when working with multiple applications.

Lindsay Shields (California) -- I had to comment on the new Classroom updates after listening to [episode 90]. My district beta tests the new updates to Google, so I have been using the grades feature since last spring. I love it. The grades page allows me to easily see who has turned in assignments, which assignments need grading and who has turned work in late. I no longer have to click on each assignment in Classroom for this. I also import grades from Classroom to our SIS system (Aeries). It is truly a timesaver. To effectively do this, you need to first create the assignment in both Classroom and Aeries. It helps to have the same number of points in both Classroom and Aeries. Once you have graded the assignment, you need to return it in Classroom. This makes the grades "official." Once you have done that, then you go to your grade book in your SIS system. It is truly magic! It saves me so much time. I use Forms for bell work and I can import the scores from Forms to Classroom, return the grades to students and then import the scores to Aeries. I can grade several classes of warm-ups in minutes. I also just started using the rubric feature. So far it is easy to create a rubric and score the assignment.

Google Classroom is one of the nicest kids on the playground of education technology. There are many apps and websites that want to play with Google and Google is happy to play with so many of the other apps and sites that are enjoying the nice days and time to play.

Jennifer (New York) -- Mark from Wisconsin asked on episode 80 about turning off spell check to proofread a poorly written letter.

I have an assignment in Literature that requires the students to proofread a poorly written letter (roughly 50 mistakes) and make corrections. Is there a way to turn off Spell Check in the shared document? I have it turned off on the master copy, but when I send it out through Classroom, each of their Chromebooks turns Spell Check back on. Thanks!

Blake (Texas) -- Hey y'all, I'm a 1st-grade teacher in Texas and I listen to GTT on my way to work all the time. Then, I run in my classroom and write down the ideas you have sparked so that I can try them.

One of the ideas is to use slides as kind of an "auto-pilot" for a day when I may need a sub. I have 2 large screens in my room and the idea was to make a slide deck that would walk them through the day. (I've even considered uploading videos of myself teaching the lesson and explaining. Phonics, for example, is a difficult lesson to teach as a sub.) So, the sub walks in and opens the slide deck at 8am. and the slides have instructions/video/example ... the students do the work... and then the slide changes to a yellow background when there are 5 minutes left, then to the next thing on the agenda.

Yea, sounds like a neat thing to try to me too. But I can't use a slide deck because I can't set different times for the auto advance.

That was a long way to ask if you know of a way to set different times for each slide. I know I could use another presentation app but we live on the G suite at my school so sharing would be easier if I could find a work around on slides.

• GeoGuessr — GeoGuessr uses Google Maps Street View to place you on the ground somewhere in the world in full panorama. The problem? You have NO idea where you are! You must use context clues to guess your location and pin it on a map. Choose to be dropped in certain continents, countries, cities, etc. … or make your own GeoGuessr game with GeoSettr!
• Smarty Pins — Smarty Pins is kind of like GeoGuessr’s cousin. It asks questions from categories like arts and culture, science and geography, and history and current events. The answers are locations, and you must pin them on a map to answer. It makes geography a game, and the closer you guess, the better your score is.
• A Google a Day — Most of us search the internet daily, if not multiple times per day. But effectively searching for something is a skill. A Google a Day challenges users to put their searching skills to the test by asking them to answer a question using Google search. With Google’s search education lesson plans you can take this game even further and begin teaching search literacy in your classroom.
• Street View Treks — Google Maps Street View lets its users see what life is like from the road, in full panorama. Street View Treks take that same technology to some of the most spectacular locations in the world, from Mount Fuji to the Grand Canyon to the Taj Mahal in India. • Story Speaker - Combine the power of Google Docs with AI! Make interactive, talking stories without coding and play your story instantly on Google Home. What I love about this tool is that it will give you a “Choose Your Own Adventure,” story template in Google Docs, so that alone is worth exploring! Help students improve writing and get creative. Even if you don’t have a Google Home or cannot use it in your classroom, the Story Speaker tool and template are worth exploring!
• Talk to Books - When you type in a question or a statement, the model looks at every sentence in over 100,000 books to find the responses that would most likely come next in a conversation. This is a really interesting way to help kids connect and learn with literature, discover new authors and books, and strike up some interesting conversations!

Jenna (Cape Town, South Africa) -- Loves “swiss army knife”. Extra curricula -- wants to use iPads and Google tools (Slides). Used to create ebooks for kindergarten aged students to read. Number books, counting books. As part of art studies, students painted with watercolors, took pictures. Used the crop tool within Slides to crop the images to different shapes. Use the shapes to compile a new image (a robot). Group all shapes together. Different versions of the robot that can be counted. Collab: all can work on the project together.

Here’s a note from Jenna: “Unfortunately, my students are still busy with the ones where they have painted their own backgrounds so I don't have a finished product yet. I've attached the one that we used to practice the skill. We did it so that they'd know what to expect when they started painting. For this one, my students used images from Google and turned the slide deck into an eBook for some of the younger students in the school. Each student worked on a different slide so that each slide had a unique robot which we duplicated for the number on the page.”

Caroline Goodman (Memphis, Tennessee) -- 2 Gmail accounts: a .org for faculty and staff, .net domain for students. Teachers frequently create docs, sheets, slides, forms in either one or both accounts. Often, files get lost between the two. Sometimes teachers aren’t sure if the doc was created with .org or .net account. How can we search between both Google Drive accounts? Extension or app? Type in a search and it’ll search both of them?

The webcam feature in many Google products (Docs, Slides, Drawings, etc.) makes a lot of cool learning activities possible.

How to activate it: Insert > Image > Camera

• Make sure you’ve given access to your camera
• If another program is using the camera, it may not work
• You don’t need a special camera … if your Chromebook/laptop has a built-in webcam, use that!
• Mobile devices: use the device camera, then bring in the images to do the same thing

How to use it:

• Click the camera button below the live webcam image to take a picture
• Take as many pictures as you want
• Insert one at a time … remember to click the “insert” button

Ways it can be used in class:

• Student reflection: in a shared Slides presentation where each student has a slide, have each student snap a selfie and add it to his/her own slide. Add speech/thought bubbles with Insert > Shapes > Callouts to allow for reflection or retelling what they’ve learned
• Interview a character/historical figure: In Google Drawings, snap a selfie, but leave room to one side. Search the web for an image of a character or historical figure and insert it. Add speech/thought bubbles for the student and the character, making it as if they’re having a conversation.
• Caption This!: This is a fun activity Matt developed with Missouri educator Laura Steinbrink. Search for an image online or upload an image. Use speech/thought bubbles to speak/think for people in the image. Then, have students add a text box on the image explaining why that person would say that. (Justifying their response moves the critical thinking up a notch on Webb’s Depth of Knowledge!)
• Stop motion animation: Have students snap a picture of something (themselves, a drawing on a whiteboard, a clay representation of what you’re learning, etc.). Add it to a slide in Google Slides. Move it and snap another picture, adding it to the next slide. Keep adding images to new slides until your animation is complete!
• MATH! Math teachers can sometimes struggle with using technology and having students show their work on a problem. Still using pencil and paper, no problem! Students can hold up their paper to the webcam and take a quick picture to insert into the work or attach it to their Google Classroom assignment.

Google Drawings comic strips -- Have students take pictures of themselves -- posing as themselves or as a character -- and add speech bubbles and thought bubbles.

Audra Arman-Richardson (Nevada) -- With Google+ shortly leaving us, what do you recommend as a replacement? We have 20+ schools throughout our state that share and communicate using this platform. We are not sure what to migrate to.

Mike Brilla (Pennsylvania) -- Google Classroom. Uses Doctopus and Goobric. Self-proclaimed “organizational train wreck”. Had trouble keeping track of the Sheets. Used Google Keep keeping track. Use Keep extension on Chrome. Uses the label “Things to grade.” Now everything is in one place. Links are there. Delete note when he’s done.

Danny Contopoulos (science teacher, New York) -- Bailee wants to know how to automatically send responses to different sheets.

In the google sheet that is accepting responses from the form, all Bailee would have to do is create two new tabs and on each tab use a filter formula

=filter('Sheet 1’!A1:F100,'Sheet 1'!B1:B100="Teacher 1") 'Sheet 1’!A1:F100 is the response range 'Sheet 1'!B1:B100 is the column with the teacher’s name "Teacher 1" is the teacher’s name (matched exactly)

Caroline Goodman (Tennessee)-- School developing new PE program where students/teachers attend classes at various times throughout the day. Google service flexible posting of class schedules so change daily, check in and out of classes, a record of who attended which classes.

Linda Hummer (Ohio) -- Personalized PD in their school district. 2 PD days -- 1 in fall with four different sessions running at the same time that staff could choose to go to, during sessions: 1 tool or several tools that do the same type of thing (formative assessment). Discuss and share what they’re doing, ask questions, work on creating things they’d like. 1 in spring -- changed to two sessions (they’re a K-12 building). Staff shared with one another, asked questions, enjoyed that type of PD, will continue using it.

Ryan Bradford -- I was listening to episode 74 last night and I think I have a solution for Bailee's question. The Query formula can be used to auto separate the data into different sheets based on certain criteria (e,g, school name, resource type, etc). If you create a Google Form with an identifying question like school name and send all of your responses to the default response sheet, you can then create two separate sheets that each use a query formula to pull on specific data based on the school name. I included some screenshots below of how I use this at my school to quickly separate supply requests by type.

The Chrome Squad is an elite group of students at Royse City High School that provide tech support and learning opportunities for both students and teachers. In the four years the Chrome Squad has been in operation they have evolved--developing new teams and products to serve not only Royse City ISD, but others districts as well. The Chrome Squad has helped over 50 other districts across the US start student internships, spoken at conferences like TCEA, and have been able to spend time at the Googleplex and Google HQ2 in Austin, Tx. The Chrome Squad is made of twenty-one 10th-12th graders working across 8 teams.

The Chrome Squad also adopted a goal setting process used by companies like Google called OKRs, or Objectives-Key Results, as well as Design SPRINTS.  This has allowed the Chrome Squad to design and project plan an entire year’s worth of work in a few days during the summer.

Kyle Anderson (Nevada) -- Keep and Forms in IEP process. A student with upcoming IEP: things have to do in Google Keep (date, send notices for parents, steps in writing it). Can use reminder function to set up in Calendar to notify when he has to complete steps. Forms: gather info for the process, send out a form to parent for details, to teachers to gather info on student, accommodations, to the student on info that will help them out best.

John Hartmann (St. Louis) -- Name a version in the revision history. Sets up a template (Sheets, slides) and names it master. When students complete the task, can revert back to the master and use it over and over. Doesn’t have to reinvent the wheel.

Type =GoogleTranslate you’ll get a formula to take words in one language and translate to +100 language. Useful for ELLs. to the native language. Two problems: FIRST, track who has done what (deleted each other’s work), Slides doesn’t seem to be color coded as well as Google Docs. Need something more accurate. Google “Spark”: I've always found technology integration interesting, especially when online creativity tools became possible. I don't even remember how or when I started using Google, but once I switched, that was it! I think being introduced Google Forms and realizing how Google Drive worked on all devices is when I realized just how productive Google tools can help educators become.  The longer I use it, the harder it is to use other tools, especially paid tools, for my day to day productivity and resource creation.

Linda Hummer (Ohio) - Thank you for all you do! I love listening to the podcast and trying out the ideas you share! I have an app smash- use the new cc feature in slides along with screencastify. Students that are shy or not comfortable talking in front of the class could record themselves ahead of time and then have it played during class or the teacher can view when they have time. This will also help the teacher when they are accessing the project. There are times when you are grading while students are presenting that you miss things. Having the video to replay showing what they said would be extremely helpful! Thanks!

Google “Spark”: When I first learned of Google Docs and Google Drive it was amazing that student documents could be accessed across multiple devices without the need for a floppy disk or thumb drive to bring to the computer lab. This was especially key when I got a class set of iPads. This may have been the gateway, but it was still just word processing.  The major sparks were realizing the options for varied expression, ability to use Doctopus to distribute templates to the learner and provide digital feedback via comments.

Alan Appleby - I listened to episode 59 about google photos, and tried to put an animation into a slideshow. We'll have kids working on change concept soon, as well as building things. Both of these give us some scope for using the animations as you described.

But, while I can embed an animation into slides, it does not 'animate' in present mode or when published to the web. Can you tell me if I'm doing something wrong, or if we just have to leave the present mode to see animations like this?

Matt Dill & Stacy Larsen - How do I prevent students from searching on other tabs in their browser for their answers, while taking a quiz on a Google Form on another?

Neil Gibbs - Is there a way of having some pages set up to be portrait and some set up to be landscape? I have an E-Book that my students are working on through Google Classroom, the Google docs, I have set up, just seems to allow the document to be either portrait or landscape and not a combination. This is really frustrating as there are tables that work well in Landscape and questions and diagrams which are suited to portrait.

4. Linda Mackay -- I’m such a fan of your show! I have one quick question that maybe you can help with: my students are telling me that their Google Classroom reminders are coming to them after midnight. Is there somewhere I can adjust this?
5. Chris Powers, Madison Wisc. -- In slides, is there a way to animate an object to follow a lined pathway? I'm a music teacher and want to animate an object like a bird, butterfly, bee, or kite, etc to show a voice pathway. I'd like it to go up and down (diagonally to show time and pitch) and even a loop if possible but I am not sure how to make an object follow a path. I figured the GTT and the swiss army knife of Google should be able to do this, right? Thanks!
6. Elisabeth Schaap (The Netherlands) -- Just started using team-drive with my colleague who teaches in a parallel class. We share files that we want to give to our students using Classroom. But, we found out that we can not share files through Classroom straight from our team-drive. Firs,t we have to make a copy and place it in our own drive and from there we can share it using Classroom. Do you know why? Is there a logical reason? Any idea if Google will change this in the future? --

8. Bruce Reicher (New Jersey) - Matt and Kasey -- I have a unique way I use Google Slides. Our school does a live tv show every morning. I have one slide deck that is the script and another slide deck for graphics and videos we play on the show. It's awesome to be able to share the script with students so they can practice before they come on the show. It also make life easier for me because I can update the script every day. In the past, I created Powerpoint slides and printed them every morning. Over the past 10 years, my students have produced over 1,000 live shows. That was a lot of paper printed for the script in the past. We now have a 1:1 with Chromebooks and no more printing :)
