You’re listening to The District Podcast, our regular series of roundtable discussions and panel chats. We’ve a very special edition this week.It was a year ago to the month when we interviewed Dublin hero Damien Dempsey about topics as wide ranging as depression, DMT and Irish hip hop. In that interview he also teased at a new record that would feature artists as diverse as Kate Tempest, Sinead O’Connor, The Dubliners, Maverick Sabre and Paul Alwright.'Union' is out now and Eric Davidson & Craig Connolly caught up with Damo ahead of his series of shows in Vicar Street on December 12, 21, 22 & 23rd. Just a note, we recorded this podcast in a hotel lobby, so excuse some of the background chat and one very loud coffee machine at one point.Music (as always) by Marcus Woods

Hosted on Acast.
District X Ace & Tate: HEADS Podcast Episode 003: FelispeaksWith HEADS we take a look at contemporary Dublin through the lens of the people who live here. There are a few heads that make Dublin tick, the people who carve out a place for art and culture here. It's the heads that inspire each other to push the boundaries, whether it's discussing an idea that'll never come to fruition over a pint, or partnering up with another like-minded Dubliner to make things happen. From poetry and rap, to design, fashion and food, these people make things happen in the Dirty Old Town. For episode 003, Niamh Craven spoke with Felicia Olusanya aka Felispeaks, a spoken word artist. For this conversation Felispeaks hones in on what spoken word and poetry means to the capital and how Ireland should pride itself in its rich poetry. HEADS is created with Ace & Tate, eyewear for every side of you.

Hosted on Acast.
At 29, [Noel Rock] is Fine Gael's youngest TD, and one of the youngest in the Dáil. He represents Dublin North West, and we're particular fans of his in the District office because he's taking a stand against ticket touting in Ireland. Through passing a private member's bill, he aims to make above-price ticket reselling a criminal offence, which means fans will be able to access tickets when touts can't profit from them, and there'll be no more paying out the nose for gigs. Here, Adam Heaton chats with him about his background, the contents of the bill itself, and some of the reasons Noel is so against ticket touting.

Hosted on Acast.
Irish hip hop wouldn't exist at the level it is today without Lethal Dialect. Any fan of the genre in this country should be aware of his legacy and the influence he has had on today's sound. He recently took to Twitter saying "the bravado, the misogyny and the alpha male bullshit that accompanied the LD moniker was to be swiftly dropped", citing influences from Rubberbandits, Damien Dempsey, Tara Flynn, Una Mulally and the passing of a friend to suicide as the catalyst. In this podcast Eric Davidson and Paul go into detail about removing the mask, feminism, where he stands now as an artist and setting an example for kids who could be in the same position he was. This is District Conversations.

Hosted on Acast.
Tony Cantwell has embedded himself in modern Irish comedy in the last few months, through a series of comedy shorts on his Facebook page. These spread rapidly and virally across Ireland, and regularly still pop up in news feeds months on from their first upload. We caught up with Tony just a week or two after he returned to Ireland after seven years working in London. We discussed a variety of important and divisive topics, including milk, magic tricks, and mammaries. We really enjoyed recording this one, and hope you enjoy listening. A desire to break through boundaries and experiment has developed as part of this social evolution, and this is where Sex Siopa comes in. Set up by Shawna Scott in 2011, SexSiopa.ie is an online sex shop that prides itself on inclusivity, discrete shipping, and body-friendly sex toys.
In July of last year we caught up with Anna Cosgrave, the leading voice of the Repeal Project, to discuss the movement. Just under a year later we reconnect to see where Ireland stands in regards to Abortion Rights. In 2012 Anna Cosgrave attended a vigil for Savita Halappavanar, the woman who died due to the avoidable circumstances of a septic miscarriage. Unbeknownst to her, the emotion Anna felt after the vigil led her to start one of the most progressive and effective pro-choice movements this country’s seen. Some months after the project kickstarted, we wanted to see where the movement is today, how she deals with online 'trolls' and what's next for the project.Music featured in this episode is 'Herbie' by Chease, from his District Mixtape, available here:https://districtmagazine.bandcamp.com/album/district-mixtape-series-chease

Hosted on Acast. Funding that used to go to arts and culture programmes has been severely cut, and despite being nearly ten years on, still hasn't recovered. This is where The Tara Building comes in. We chatted to Nichol Gray, manager of the Tara Building on Tara St. Located next to Apollo House, it's Dublin's latest studio/creative space, set to launch this March. Nichol discusses plans for the Tara Building, the state of Dublin's creative scene, and why the Poolbeg chimneys have become so iconic in Dublin's design scene.

Hosted on Acast.
