Ballet Dancer & HIV Advocate - Joshua Royal | Ep.188 | This British Life Podcast

An adopted child from Sri Lanka, Joshua came to England at just 5 weeks old. His love for Ballet started after going to see The Nutcracker at age 4 and by age 11 he had been accepted into The Royal Ballet School and then went onto The Central School of Ballet a few years after before going over to the U.S on a Ballet scholarship.

He decided to give up Ballet after longterm issues with mental health and being diagnosed with Bi-Polar.

Unfortunately Joshua was diagnosed with HIV at 24years old after a routine blood test, but he's now become an advocate for both mental heath and people living with HIV.

His first events to highlight all of the above is called The Naked Truth, with an exhibition of the 29th November 2025 followed by a The Naked Truth Gala on the 2nd December 2025. Tickets can be purchased via the website below...

Tadiwa Mahlunge is a stand-up comedian rising star who started writing jokes at the age of 17, with some of his major early influences being Dave Cappelle, Chris Rock (and the TV show South Park).

Born in Zimbabwe his family were forced to flee due to political violence which is when they came to London (and Cardiff).

Tad decided to learn all about theoretical physics after watching the Big Bang Theory and went on to study Maths and Computer Science at Lancaster University which is where his first ever comedy gig took place.

In this LOL episode we get to hear about Tad's own comedy journey along with many other things such as what Jo Brand is really like, advice on how to keep up a healthy relationship while working as a comedian, and a few arbitrary Jerry Seinfeld references thrown into the mix.

Tad is a performing his own show at the Edinburgh fringe this August 2025 The show is called Hakuna MaTadTad.

The conversation starts with a story about Violin playing over the ocean (not Dave) onto his experiences DJing at places such as Ayia Napa, Ibiza and the various hot-spots within Soho.

We hear about Dave's humble beginnings growing up in Hackney, onto rubbing shoulders with celebs (as you do) in leafy Hampstead.

We also get to hear about his hobby, which is very unusual for a DJ (and how far he takes it). Of course we get to hear about many of Dave's work around various Licensed venues all around London and how he actually started DJing.

Dr John Woolf is an Irish-British historian, researcher and lecturer. He was born and raised in North London and graduated from the University of Cambridge, with two scholarships to his name, before winning two further scholarships at Goldsmiths, University of London, where he was awarded his PhD on nineteenth-century history.

They also chat about the tragic story of the Elephant Man - Joseph Merrick, his time at Cambridge University and why his story may not be as simple as we originally thought.

Leslee is a Jewish-British filmmaker, actress, director, producer and human rights activist. Her most acclaimed role being that of Director to the incredibly powerful 2015 documentary INDIA'S DAUGHTER, about the brutal gang rape on a Delhi bus of a 23 year old medical student Jyoti Singh, who later died from her injuries.

In 2012, it made international headlines and ignited protests by women (and men) in India and around the world. BAFTA winning filmmaker Leslee Udwin, herself a victim of rape, went to India inspired by the protests against sexual assault to expose what had happened as well as why.

This experience led Leslee to create Think Equal, a ground breaking education program designed to break the mold within the education system and create real change to how children and taught in schools.
