Thomas Trautmann est un scientifique et un entrepreneur expérimenté. Après des études d’ingénieur en informatique, il obtient un doctorat en intelligence artificielle (pionnier des réseaux de neurones) de l'Université de Technologie de Compiègne. Tout juste son doctorat en poche, il quitte le monde Académique pour le secteur privé technologique où il développe son expertise en marketing et la vente.

En 2013, il rejoint SalesBrain en tant que Business Partner, une entreprise américaine pionnière du neuromarketing. Après plusieurs années à échanger avec les chef d’entreprise, il réalise qu’il peut aller plus loin que le neuromarketing (qui s’addresse aux clients des entreprises) et que pour cela, il doit augmenter le «zoom» de son expertise. Dans ce but, en 2016, il fonde Happy Brains, une entreprise de coaching et de formation qui aide les entrepreneurs et tout particulièrement les entrepreneurs mariés à utiliser les neurosciences pour améliorer leur réussite.

Can ChatGPT do financial planning? Connecting LLMs and Mathematical Models

Large Language Models (LLMs) used by AI such as ChatGPT have a limitation when it comes to complex mathematical tasks such as financial modelling, which requires intricate simulations.

For instance, while GPT-4 can compute the interest paid on a loan, it cannot determine the loan's duration over several years.

In this talk, Sina Shahandeh shows how we can use ChatGPT as an interface for a no-code financial planning application and allow users to build a financial plan and inquire about it in natural conversation.

Sina Shahandeh holds a PhD in scientific computing and has led data science teams at three startups in Toronto's ecosystem. Before founding Plan with Flow, Sina served as the Vice President of Data Science at ecobee Inc., leading to an exit valued at $770 million.

He is the founder of Plan with Flow, a no-code tool for modelling personal finance situations. Sina believes individuals and society can become more rational if we can foresee the outcome of our actions using mathematical models with the help of AI.

Did you know Brazilian mangroves can absorb up to 4 times more carbon than Amazonian forest trees?

Hélène Plihon is a geochemist and PhD candidate who is a member of the laboratory "Marine Environmental Chemistry" led by Dr. Stéphane Mounier at the Mediterranean Institute of Oceanography of Marseille.

Hélène's research focuses on mangroves, with a particular interest in the spatial contamination of mangroves and carbon storage in Ceará, Brazil.

Mangroves are vital ecosystems that provide numerous benefits to local communities and the wider world. They are known to sequester large amounts of atmospheric carbon dioxide, helping to mitigate the effects of climate change. However, mangroves are also under threat from various sources of contamination, including industrial and agricultural pollution.

By studying mangroves in Ceará, Brazil, Hélène is shedding new light on the spatial distribution of contaminants in this important ecosystem. Her research uses a range of analytical techniques to identify and quantify various pollutants in the environment, and to understand how they interact with different components of the ecosystem.

Overall, Hélène's work is crucially important for informing policies and practices aimed at protecting mangroves and mitigating the impacts of climate change. Her research highlights the need for continued efforts to monitor and address pollution in mangrove ecosystems and the value of understanding.

Another area of growth is in mobility assistance technologies which help older adults maintain their independence and mobility. Smart home automation and safety devices can make daily living easier and safer for seniors.

In addition, silver technologies can also facilitate socialization and connection. Social media and communication platforms are increasingly used by seniors to stay in touch with family and friends, and virtual reality and gaming technologies are being developed to provide seniors with social and entertainment options.

What if we were wrong?

What if words were the problem of children dropping out of Maths?

As you may know, dropping out of maths can often lead to a domino effect in which students give up on other subjects as well.

In Luxembourg, the National language is Luxembourgish, but Luxembourg is a highly international country in which only 37% of children are native Luxembourgish speakers at primary school. You can find in a classroom children coming from 10 different European countries!

Therefore teaching maths with words can be a good fit only for native children. The others will drop out.

In fact, even among native speakers, trying to understand maths taught with words is still a challenge. Maths are not made to express words, and therefore, maths should not be taught with words!

This is the challenge Dr Tahereh Pazouki took up.

Dr Tahereh Pazouki is a computer engineer by training and holds a PhD in psychology from the University of Luxembourg. During her research, she applied her computer science skills to the field of cognitive psychology. This is how Magrid came to life.

L'antibiorésistance est un phénomène qui se produit lorsque des bactéries deviennent résistantes aux antibiotiques couramment utilisés pour traiter les infections. Cette résistance peut rendre les infections bactériennes difficiles, voire impossibles à traiter, ce qui peut entraîner des complications pour les patients, ainsi que des coûts de soins de santé plus élevés.

L'utilisation excessive et inappropriée d'antibiotiques est l'une des principales causes de l'antibiorésistance. C'est pourquoi il est important de prendre des mesures pour limiter l'utilisation d'antibiotiques lorsqu'ils ne sont pas nécessaires, comme dans le cas d'infections virales ou bactériennes mineures qui peuvent guérir d'elles-mêmes.

Des mesures visant à limiter l'antibiorésistance comprennent également la promotion de bonnes pratiques d'hygiène pour prévenir la propagation d'infections, ainsi que la recherche et le développement de nouveaux antibiotiques et de traitements alternatifs pour les infections bactériennes.

L'antibiorésistance est une préoccupation croissante dans l'industrie agricole.

Dans l'élevage, les antibiotiques sont principalement utilisés à des fins prophylactiques (afin de prévenir les animaux de tomber malades) mais aussi pour autre effet, stimuler la croissance de l’animal. Cette utilisation augmente considérablement le risque d'exposition des humains aux bactéries résistantes par la consommation de viande ou d'autres produits d'origine animale, ou encore par contact direct, notamment chez les éleveurs eux-mêmes.

Pour répondre de manière adéquate au problème de la résistance aux antibiotiques dans l'agriculture, davantage de chercheurs devraient s'efforcer de trouver des alternatives durables à l'utilisation des antibiotiques. La compréhension des schémas et du comportement des microbes dans les exploitations agricoles peut ouvrir la voie à la création d'interventions efficaces contre les infections. Réduire le risque d'émergence de bactéries résistantes aux antibiotiques dans la chaîne alimentaire est également nécessaire pour la santé publique.

Pour trouver une solution solide et durable, il faut des efforts de la part de différents acteurs de l'industrie agricole, des secteurs de la santé et des décideurs politiques.

Curious about how a quantum computer actually computes and how scientists write algorithms for them?

Quantum computing has been touted with great potential in various fields. Some claims may be overly ambitious, and opinions on the feasibility of building practical machines may differ. Still, there is much to be optimistic about and to be excited for. In this session, Manuel will share his experience as a quantum algorithms researcher with a diverse scientific background-- from university to a quantum computing startup and back. He will begin with a friendly introduction to the foundations of quantum computing, and then talk about his research in quantum machine learning and generative modelling. Manuel's goal is to help develop the first practical algorithms capable of running on the earliest viable quantum computers.

Enfin Une Solution Efficace Contre La Douleur Chronique Sans Effet Secondaire !

Mon invité pour ce nouvel épisode d'E² est Guillaume Palacios, Docteur en Physique Théorique (la discipline d’Einstein) de l'Université Leibniz Hannover (en Allemagne).

Guillaume a mené des recherches de pointe sur la matière condensée au Rutgers University (New Jersey, Etats-Unis), Université d'Amsterdam (Pays-Bas), à l'Ecole Normale Supérieure puis au CEA (Centre d'Energie Atomique) avant de rejoindre le privé en créant trois startup tech.

Il aurait pu rester dans le Monde Académique où une carrière toute tracée attendait. Il aurait pu aussi continuer sa route dans le monde des technologies industrielles. Mais ne supportant plus l’injustice qui affecte 11 millions d’hommes et de femmes en France, injustice qui pourrit la vie de ceux et celles qui en souffrent, Guillaume s’est révolté.

Guillaume a embrassé sa destinée en créant la startup PainkillAR.

PainkillAR est une startup parisienne créée fin 2018 et incubée à TELECOM ParisTech.

Sa Mission : soulager les 11 millions d'hommes et de femmes en France souffrant de douleur chronique. Cela représente 1 personne sur 4 qui souffrent de douleur chronique.

120 millions de personnes souffrent de douleur chronique rien qu'aux Etats-Unis. La douleur chronique coûte aux États-Unis jusqu'à 635 milliards de dollars par an.

• Docteur en chirurgie dentaire de l’Université de Bordeaux, il est spécialiste de l'orthopédie dento-facial. Depuis 2009 à aujourd’hui, il dirige son cabinet d'orthodontie à Bergerac (en Dordogne / Nouvelle-Aquitaine) qui compte une équipe de 11 collaborateurs.
• Chercheur avec un doctorat en neurosciences cognitives obtenu en juin 2022 également à l’Université de Bordeaux. Et avant son doctorat en neurosciences, Masrour a décroché deux Masters, un en anthropologie biologique (discipline qui s’intéresse à l’évolution humaine) et un autre en neurosciences computationnelles (discipline qui avec l'intelligence artificielle perce les secrets de notre cerveau).

Masrour est également vigneron. Il est le co-créateur d’un vin de prestige nommé Cyrhus.

Le nom Cyrhus a été choisi en hommage à l'Empereur Perse Cyrus le Grand (fondateur de l'empire Achéménide qui gouverna le Monde connu de -559 av. JC à -330 av. JC) et au cépage Shiraz planté dans le vignoble de Masrour à Bergerac. Masrour est originaire de la ville de Chiraz en Iran, région qui compte également la tombe de Cyrus, sacrée pour les Iraniens.

Vous êtes chercheur et vous avez l’habitude de communiquer vos recherches. Vous écrivez des articles dans les journaux scientifiques à comités de lecture, vous écrivez des rapports, vous écrivez des demandes de financement pour vos recherches, vous écrivez et concevez vos diaporamas, vous écrivez et concevez vos posters. Vous avez l’habitude de présenter à l’oral vos recherches lors des réunions de votre laboratoire, lors des séminaires et conférences devant un public de scientifiques.

Et vous êtes naturellement convaincu de maîtriser l’art de la communication.

Et bien, vous avez raison ... mais en parti seulement. Vous savez communiquer vos recherches à des scientifiques, des scientifiques de votre discipline, des scientifiques de votre spécialité. Cette communication-là a ses règles, elle est basée sur la méthode scientifique que vous maîtrisez évidement, mais aussi sur les techniques et technologies que vous avez utilisez lors de vos expériences.

Et vous pensez sûrement que votre communication rationnelle basée sur la méthode scientifique (si on prend la peine de vulgariser la technique) est parfaitement compréhensible par n’importe qui.

Malheureusement, votre communication n'est compréhensible que par moins de 1% de la population ! Votre communication est le fruit de vos années d’études supérieures dans les sciences dures et de votre expérience professionnelle de chercheurs scientifiques.

Vous ne pouvez pas demander un tel engagement de la part de 99% de la population, y compris les politiques, les investisseurs, le monde médical, les journalistes et le grand public.

Il n’y a pas une communication, mais des communicationS.

La communication est un art mais aussi une science qui a ses propres techniques et outils.

Ces techniques et outils vous permettent d’élaborer un message spécifique pour chaque type d’audience (investisseurs, monde médical, journalistes, grand public), pour l’objectif que vous cherchez à obtenir (objectif éducatif, informatif ou persuasif), et en fonction du contexte dans lequel votre message sera délivré.

J’étais en train de surfer sur Youtube quant au hasard des vagues, mon attention est captée par la vignette d’une vidéo, celle de Mélanie Pin.

In this new episode of e², my Guest is Dr François-Xavier Pellay. He holds a PhD in Biology and Health from the University of Lille. He is an expert in the science of anti-ageing & longevity. Former Group leader at the Mediterranean Institute of Life science led by Prof. Miroslav Radman. Dr Pellay is also a serial biotech entrepreneur, he is currently the founder CEO of a new venture, the Cell Culture Lab (founded in 2020, based in Split, Croatia), dedicated to skin rejuvenation.

Based on the original research of Dr. Pellay, Cell Culture Lab mission is to offer the most efficient solutions applied in aesthetic medicine for skin rejuvenation and long-term anti-wrinkle treatment.

His protocol is simple, from a tiny biopsy (a piece of your skin), your own fibroblasts are expanded ex vivo in culture with a secret sauce that rejuvenates your cells. Then, your rejuvenated fibroblasts are injected into your skin (in the dermis). The results are spectacular and last several years.

Why the fibroblasts?

Ageing induces the loss of fibroblasts in the dermis of your skin. The function of dermis fibroblasts is to produce collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid. These molecules provide the quality and youth of your skin.

Ageing => loss of dermis fibroblasts => loss of collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid => Appearance of wrinkles and loss of elasticity.

Full 3D immersion will give us a learning experience that face-to-face, books and e-Learning can never reach.  3D immersion is not a science fiction scenario, the technologies are already there and integrating into commercial solutions at high speed.  And above all, we know that immersion in a virtual universe (100% digital - Metaverse -) or in an augmented reality allows learning just as effective as in IRL (In Real Life)!  There is no learning (ie long-term memorization) without emotion, and there is no emotion without perception and sensory. The multi-sensory experience (ie recruiting all the senses devoted to external and internal perception of our body) as well as the recruitment and stimulation of our imagination are the key to the effectiveness of learning in 3D immersion. The more your equipment and the universe that you will be offered will mimic what you would have felt, experienced in IRL, not only will the learning be effective, but we can even imagine that it will be better than in IRL because you could live extreme experiences in complete safety, such as with centrifuges that allow apprentice astronauts and fighter pilots to experience the acceleration of gravity during take-off or when changing course.

Problem

Skin is our larger tissue/organ with the function to protect us against all kind of external World treat. It’s a an extraordinary system but very fragile at same time.

Every year over 11 millions people,  half of which are kids, all around the World are victims of fire and are burned severely enough to require urgent medical care and permanent attention. Every 3 seconds, someone around the world is the victim of severely burns. In case of skin severe burn injury, the patient needs a lot of skin and rapidly to avoid infection. Every year over 300 000 people die from fires and the consequence of severe burns.

During all their life, survivors will suffer from dramatic physical, psychological and social consequences.

Current medical offer

Only 50 years ago, a victim was burned over 40%, he/she were condemned to die. Hopefully, due to the progress of skin grafts, now expert specialized medical staff can save people with burns up to 90-95%.

Remarkable differences in burn outcomes can be observed between high-income and low/middle-income countries. The level of expertise of the medical staff specialized in the care of severely burned patients and the specific requirements of specialized hospitals or centres explains why low/middle-income countries can not offer the best care to their victims.

For those affected nothing is like before. Indeed, even if skin grafts save lives, unfortunately, there are far way from being a perfect solution. Patients suffer from chronic pain and have to undergo regular surgeries. Deep wounds heal badly and develop into large, permanent, disfiguring scars that need follow-up surgeries. The patient’s skin will be covered with large scars inducing not only psychological and social damage (studies show that people with significant visible scars are seen as less likable and less intelligent, which makes it difficult for burn victims to find jobs) but also physical disabilities. Indeed, the large scar zones are rigid and limit the movement otherwise are painful.

CUTISS Revolution

From just a small piece of healthy skin from an un-burned zone, the size of a postage stamp, the skin cells are harvested, expanded and then combined in an hydrogel to produce a living skin - called DenovoSkin - ready to be transported to the operating room where the surgeon can transplant it on the injured areas.

All the process is fully automated and performed by a machine - called DenovoCast - invented by CUTISS !

DenovoSkin is of course not rejected as it is from the patient’s own cells. DenovoSskin will dramatically improve patient quality of life by minimizing scarring, reducing the number of follow-up surgeries and hospitalization time. The ambition of CUTISS is democratize to all hospitals and clinics the care of severely burned patients, not only in high income countries but also in low/middle income ones where the need is HUGE!

The market for CUTISS is $2 billion for severe burns and over $5 billion for burn scar reconstruction – this in Europe and the United States alone.

Les Français sont de plus en plus nombreux à céder à la tentation d’un test génétique et à la promesse que leur soit révélé le secret de leurs origines...

• Mais combien sommes-nous à savoir ce que sont les gènes ? A avoir une idée de leur impact sur notre santé, notre passé, notre présent et notre futur ?
• Comment ces sociétés fonctionnent-elles ?
• Quelles sont les autres grandes utilités de la génétique humaine ?
• Pourquoi Steve Jobs fut-il l’un des premiers à séquencer son génome ?
• Comment Angelina Jolie est-elle devenue une véritable influenceuse des tests de prédisposition au cancer du sein ?

Des maladies héréditaires à l’histoire de nos ancêtres, de la médecine personnalisée aux thérapies géniques, voire au choix de nos cosmétiques, les clefs de notre ADN semblent ouvrir de nombreuses portes et de multiples marchés. La question est alors : comment orienter au mieux ces innovations ?

A l'occasion de la sortie de son livre Genome Hacking, dans ce nouvel épisode d’Epistémê Entrepreneur, avec l’excellent Harold Knoll, nous avons eu le plaisir d’échanger longuement avec Déborah Levy. 

Après une solide formation universitaire en biosciences (Magistère Européen de Génétique - Université de Paris), Déborah Levy se spécialise en entrepreneuriat technologique avec un Master of Science sous la double tutelle de l’École Polytechnique (X) et d’HEC Paris. Elle est aujourd’hui Analyste au sein de la startup studio TechnoFounders dédiée à la création de startups Deep Tech.

La protéomique désigne la science qui étudie l'ensemble des protéines d'une cellule, d'un organite, d'un tissu, d'un organe ou d'un organisme à un moment donné et sous des conditions données.

Dans la pratique, la protéomique s'attache à identifier de manière globale les protéines extraites d'une culture cellulaire, d'un tissu ou d'un fluide biologique, leur localisation dans les compartiments cellulaires, leurs éventuelles modifications post-traductionnelles ainsi que leur quantité.

Elle permet de quantifier les variations de leur taux d'expression en fonction du temps, de leur environnement, de leur état de développement, de leur état physiologique et pathologique, de l'espèce d'origine. Elle étudie aussi les interactions que les protéines ont avec d'autres protéines, avec l'ADN ou l'ARN, ou d'autres substances.

Dans ce nouvel épisode d'Epistémê Entrepreneur, j'ai eu le plaisir d'échanger avec le Pr. Christophe Hirtz, expert international de la biochimie des protéines à travers les technologies protéomiques.

Ses intérêts scientifiques incluent le développement de nouvelles méthodes de quantification des protéines utilisant la spectrométrie de masse ciblée dans un environnement clinique. Il est Directeur de la Plateforme de Protéomique Clinique de Montpellier (PPC), comprenant 5 spectromètres de masse (Triple quadripôle, Q-Tof, Maldi-Tof). La Plateforme de Protéomique Clinique est une plateforme de biochimie analytique qui vise à exploiter les derniers développements technologiques en spectrométrie de masse et en immunodosage pour la découverte, la validation et l’utilisation de biomarqueurs dans de nombreuses pathologies humaines (protéines, ARN, ADN, métabolites).

Il est considéré comme un leader d'opinion clé en protéomique clinique par différentes sociétés internationales (Shimadzu, Bruker, Protein Simple).

Depuis 2011, la PPC a participé à la publication de plus de 50 articles scientifiques internationaux.

Eureka! J’ai une idée d’un produit (bien et/ou service) qui va faire un malheur ! Je réunie mes économies, j’embauche des ingénieurs qui vont concevoir ce que j’ai dans la tête. Puis, je crée une entreprise pour commercialiser mon produit génial que tout le monde va s’arracher ! ... Et c’est le flop !

Vous riez parce que des entrepreneurs qui s’auto-hypnotisent avec leurs idées de génie, on en a tous connu, sauf que cela concerne aussi les grandes entreprises. Une étude venant d’un cabinet de conseil renommé dit que les consommateurs voudront plus de ci ou moins de ça. Le département marketing d’une grande entreprise industrielle convainc la direction qui passe alors l’ordre au département R&D (recherche et développement). Les ingénieurs se mettent à concevoir et développer un produit qui répond exactement à ce qui a été prophétisé comme une demande des consommateurs par la fameuse étude. Le produit est prêt, le marketing et les commerciaux sont dans les starting-blocks ... on lance le produit à grand renfort de publicités .... et c’est le FLOP!

Quelle différence avec notre entrepreneur et la grande entreprise industrielle ? Aucune, si ce n’est les montants investis (ou balancés par la fenêtre).

La méthode Lean Startup est une approche de conception de nouveau produit qui allie :

- les études ethnographiques des designers (customer discovery ou UX research) qui permettent de révéler les problèmes, frustrations et difficultés des usagers avant, pendant et après l’acte d’achat, d’utilisation ou de consommation.

- et l’expérimentation scientifique pour valider ou invalider rapidement des hypothèses par la conception de MVP - Minimum Viable Product - et de tests sur les clients/usagers.

Le Lean Startup réduit drastiquement les temps de développement et de mise sur le marché. Le Lean Startup permet d’évaluer rapidement les 3 dimensions clés pour le succès d’un nouveau produit :

- la désirabilité par les clients

- la faisabilité technique

- et la viabilité économique

Le Lean Startup permet de lever les incertitudes de l’innovation (acte d’amener une nouveauté au monde).

Le Lean Startup est la méthode de conception utilisée par la Silicon Valley et qui a produit et continue de produire de les nombreux succès planétaires (Uber, AirbnB ...). D’abord utilisé par les startups BtoC, Etienne Garbugli s’est approprié la méthode Lean et l’a appliqué avec succès en contexte BtoB.

Dans son livre, Samah rend limpide et accessible les dernières découvertes en neurosciences pour que vous puissiez les appliquer à votre équipe et au-delà !  La lecture de son livre vous permettra enfin de comprendre les besoins supérieurs du Maslow, de ne plus les ignorer comme étant un truc de "bobos", un truc qui ne concerne pas l'entreprise, car ces besoins là sont tout aussi important que nos besoins primaires (manger, boire, dormir, respirer...). Les ignorer, les négliger peut conduire à des drames. Les comprendre, les prendre en compte et les gérer vous permettra de créer, de manager et de développer des équipes cohésives, apprenantes et performantes... et cela commence par ne plus affubler ces besoins là de "secondaires" !

Samah Karaki est docteur en neurosciences. Elle a été research fellow à l’Université Pierre et Marie Curie et a enseigné à l’institut de Psychologie de Paris Descartes.
