After the passing within a short timeframe of three monarchs of Hastinapura in Shantanu, Chitrangada, and Vicchitravirya, the caretakers of the throne, Satyavati & Bhishma are plunged into a dilemma over what should happen next in absence of the royal line of Kuru effectively being halted in its entirety in the absence of Bhishma having any offspring. This episode explores how the dilemma was handled.

King Yayati after enjoying the insatiable pleasures of the world, decided to retire to the forest, and devote his life to meditating and conducting sacrifices, devoting himself to contentment with simplicity. After attaining the heavens as a result, the King was asked by the King of gods, Indra, about the teachings he imparted to his youngest son Puru, to whom he had bestowed his Kingdom. The teachings, focus on kindness in acts and words towards others, and the control of one’s anger.

After being declined by Kacha, and having been saved from the well by King Yayati, Devayani chances across the King again, this time in different circumstances; when she now has Sharmistha as her maidservant. Devayani and Yayati, being enamoured with one another, agree to marriage with the conditional assent of her father Sukra. However, Devayani doesn’t know what she may expect from the boisterous King.

After the efforts of the gods to obtain the sanjeevani from the demoniac preceptor through Kacha, and the departure of Kacha from the abode of his new found preceptor Sukra, he turns away his daughter Devayani. Devayani finds herself then stuck in a feud with the daughter of those so close to her Father, the demon King, Vrishaparvan through the intervention of Indra.

The Moghuls called the Mahabharata, the “Book of War.” It is clear that without disunion, the stories prominence, would not be the same. King Janamejaya, on seeing his great great grandfather, Sage Vyasa, asks a very pointed question, what was the cause of disunion amongst his great ancestors. To this, Vyasa appoints Sage Vaisampayana, who would be known as the Mahabharata Acharya, or master of the Mahabharata, who summarises the cause of this disunion.

The Grandson of Arjuna, King Parikshit, despite being one of the most noble of monarchs to have sat on the throne of Hastinapura, happened to do so at a time of transition. Transition of the ages, into the Dark Age. As a result, destiny would have it that he would come across a peaceful sage, and exhibit anger towards him; which would be punished harshly by the sages young and immature son. The episode describes these events, and those that followed leading to the King’s departure from this world.

21. The Land of Ayodhya

Ayodhya features in the Mahabharata both dependently and independently of Rama. Many Kings have come and gone, both in the line of Ikshvaku, and also not; not least during the Moghul rules, but also in the Indo-Aryan ages. The grand example of devotion in Tulasidas in the 1600s, at also a time of intersection with the Moghuls, reveals much about just how intervowen the devotional spirit spurred by Ayodhya was.

Many an era of the Vedic times, are covered in the Mahabharata in some form; whether through a narration by a Sage, or a comparison with a character from the past; the Ramayana, Ayodhya and Rama are no exception. 13 of the 18 Parvas cite these, and there is much to be learned on how the Pandavas and others of Hastinapura looked back on the times of the great Rama of Ayodhya.

Garuda is one of the opening paintings by the Moghuls in their depictions of the Mahabharata from the 18th century. This episode tells the stories behind their famous paintings also. After hearing of the prowess of Garuda in terms of his presence, strength and virtuousness described in the prayers to him by the host of gods, Garuda finds his mother and himself in a circumstance of slavery to his aunt, and seeks to find a solution. This episode describes Garuda’s adventures to free his mother, beginning with him satisfying his appetite before taking on the herculean tasks that await him.

It ends with the terrible dilemma faced by the Sun god, and how Aruna, the brother of Garuda, made redemption.

16. War of the Gods

As the story begins to explain the advent of Garuda & the Snakes, prior to the great snake sacrifice, the introduction is made to Sage Astika, the saviour of the snake race. In the stories of Vinata and Garuda, features the celestial steed Uchchaisravas, who appeared after the churning of the ocean. The churning of the ocean led to Shiva drinking the poison that emerged, as well as the advent of Mohini Murti, the beautiful female form of Narayana, and finally the much famed war between the gods and the demigods and demons, with the Sage Nara-Narayana coming to annihilate the battlefield and gain victory for the gods.

After the chaotic succession events concerning the throne of Hastinapura, culminating in the end of the Kuru bloodline, this episode looks at the implications of the vow of Bhīṣma never to take to the throne, despite being the most qualified in every respect, not least with the blood line. The episode continues with raising of the two new crown princes Dhṛtarāṣṭra and Pāndu, as well as their step brother Vidura, coming from the unions of Sage Vyāsa and Princess Ambikā, Ambālika as well as Parishrami the maidservant.
