13:45 – GUEST – The radio service that has been entertaining patients and staff at the East Surrey Hospital has marked its 50th anniversary this week. The first experimental broadcast took place on Christmas Day 1974 at the former Redhill General Hospital, with regular programmes starting the following year. I was invited along to be interviewed about the podcast as a guest on one of their anniversary shows, and also took the opportunity to interview Sian, Nick and Nigel about the radio station, as a guest on the podcast!

19:15 - Reigate Hill plane crash 80th anniversary event. This week we report from a commemoration event on Reigate Hill last Wednesday. It marked the 80th anniversary of the loss of nine lives of US Air Force crew who died when their B17 plane crashed there on the afternoon of 19th March 1945. A poignant event in which we remembered not just that crew but the loss of all other air crew who died in the Surrey Hills during the Second World War. The gathering this week included readings from military veterans and a wreath laying at the site of the crash.

They are not only great friends but also business partners, because soon after they left hospital with their babies, they found they had to struggle against the system to ensure their children had the same opportunities as other kids.

And that struggle became a charity, PSDS, which is based at their new HQ in Reigate, and helps hundreds of families across the south-east.

Funding has been earmarked for Redhill's Harlequin theatre which was shut in September 2023 due to unstable concrete in its building.

On Thursday evening 30 January 2025,, Reigate and Banstead Borough Council agreed to allocate up to £10m for the theatre and "cultural offerings" in the borough.

How many times have you driven into Reigate either from Redhill, or from down the Hill, and found yourself in the town’s one-way system, taking that awkward sharp left-hand turn off Church Street, past the town’s only multi-storey car park on the right-hand side, the library tucked away at the dog-leg bend, the Everyman cinema on the right and up to Bell Street..?

Have you ever looked at the building on the left-hand side, Pool House, and wondered how it got its name?

Maybe you knew that it was built on the site of the town’s swimming pool, that opposite it, the cinema sits on the site of another cinema, so grand it was called The Majestic, and that that building was almost side-to-side with the town’s first cinema, The Hippodrome.

This special episode of The Planet Reigate Podcast brings together features from Christmas and New Year shows of 2024 and 2025, all in one place. Together, hear the story of Reigate’s Bancroft Road.

• The love story at the heart of the development of both the Majestic Pool and Majestic Cinema.

We have been given special access to part of Bancroft Road that is not normally open to the public. With grateful thanks to Spencer Copping of WS Planning and architecture, whose offices are in the appropriately named Pool House, listen as we go behind the scenes and underground as we record interviews in what was the actual pool.

Welcome to this first ‘special edition’ of The Planet Reigate Podcast.

One of the biggest issues in the area for the past year, coinciding with the launch of this show, has been on-going drama of the future of the Harlequin Theatre in Redhill which has been closed since September 2023 when the dangerous reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (Raac) was discovered.

On Thursday 28th November a council meeting was held in which members of the public were invited to ask their questions about the Harlequin and its future.

This is a slightly-edited version of that meeting (for reasons given at the start of the episode), and on a platform which is, I hope, easier to navigate than the version on the council's website.
