111: Combining Dental Hygiene and Myofunctional Therapy with Saray Fung

Saray Fung is a practicing dental hygienist who graduated from the fast-track program at NYU, finishing dental hygiene school in just 17 months! Although she experienced anxiety in school, she was able to overcome it by using mental health resources provided by her school. Today, she is a recently certified myofunctional therapist running her own practice, OroWell! Saray can now assess patients with orofacial myofunctional disorders, such as TMJ disorders, and help correct these issues. This is another excellent example of how dental hygienists can expand their roles in the dental office.

The Hijabi Hygienist's Experience in Dental Hygiene School

My favorite RDH origin stories are the ones of people who didn't originally plan to become dental hygienists and somehow fell into it and end up loving this career. That was the case for Wafaa, @the_hijabi_hygienist, an influencer hygienist practicing clinically for 9 years now. She faced challenges in her pre-req classes as a pre-med student, and just so happened to be getting orthodontic treatment at the university she was attending when she realized dentistry piqued her interest. She conveniently had all the classes she needed to apply for the dental hygiene program and ended up getting in on her first try. Right after gaining her license, she decided to jump into the dental hygiene master's of science program with aspirations of becoming an educator in the future. Wafaa admits to facing challenges through her schooling, but is glad she persevered and enjoys her career in dental hygiene as well as helping her followers become RDHs!

Angy RDH: A DACA Recipients' Dental Hygiene Journey

This episode features Angy, a travel RDH who is a learning and development manager with Cloud Dentistry, the online staffing platform! She shares her arduous but inspiring journey to becoming a dental hygienist. As a DACA recipient, she had to navigate paying for school out of pocket and taking the national boards without U.S. citizenship. Angy also worked 40-hour work weeks throughout her two years in dental hygiene school. Working night shifts and then being at school from 8-5 right after deserves some praise! She didn't have it easy in dental hygiene school but it shows that anything is possible with enough drive and motivation. She is a true rockstar!

Marisa, the Financial Hygienist, On Becoming Free from Debt

How an Arts Major Found Passion in Dental Hygiene

Jose has recently graduated from dental hygiene school at NYU's associate's program and plans to continue his education by getting a bachelor's in health promotion and education. He talks about how his major in arts helped him appreciate the field of dentistry when he worked as an orthodontics dental assistant. This clinical experience helped him stand out on his application since his GPA wasn't as high as he hoped. Despite not getting accepted into a program on his first try, Jose made the most of his education in dental hygiene school. He was class president and was a member of several associations during his schooling. I found his story really motivating, especially for future hygiene students who are feeling stuck in their journey.

How to Do Less in Dental Hygiene School

Do you ever feel like you’re not living in the moment? It’s probably because you need to “Do Less.” And doing less isn’t what you think it is- I'm not telling you to quit everything you’re doing or do the bare minimum. It simply comes down to living in the moment you are in presently, allowing yourself to enjoy the now instead of worrying about what happened 5 minutes prior or whatever task you have ahead of you. The concept of doing less can actually take you more places because- once you master this skill- you’ll feel less burnt out, less stressed, and more satisfied with yourself. Trust me when I say this isn’t something you learn to do overnight- in fact, it’s still something I’m working on after years of practice! I’ve seen a drastic change in my mental health and overall happiness by doing less, taking a step back, and reminding myself to be present and calm. The truth is, no one can work at full efficiency 24/7 without reaching a breaking point so my best advice to dental hygiene students is to master how to do less. Learn all about it in this episode!

My Favorite Dental Hygiene School Memories

I love to showcase dental hygienists who have branched off from clinical hygiene to do something unique because it's so refreshing to think of all the possibilities we have in this field! In this episode, I interviewed Katie and Marvelyn, who founded their company Perio Precise. They're doing amazing work in Las Vegas, Nevada by helping hygienists incorporate the use of endoscopes in their practice, using endoscopes to treat patients, and educating the masses on endoscopes. Their stories are amazing and I hope you find them as motivating as I did! One of the best take-home messages in this episode is, "Don’t let a setback deter or define you." It's so important to remember that, in order to be successful, you have to be comfortable with failure!

Some of my favorite things about being a dental hygienist is the satisfaction of removing calculus, interacting with patients, and being able to work with new technology and resources. Dana Discusses What All It Takes to Become a Registered Dental Hygienist

Did you know that after you graduate dental hygiene school, you are still not considered a registered dental hygienist? Well, unless you take and pass all of your state/national board exams first! I had an interesting discussion with a student that I tutor for the national board exams. She stated she did not know she would need to take a board exam when she decided to go to dental hygiene school! After this discussion, I decided I needed to share ALL of the steps that it takes to become a registered dental hygienist in your state. Know Before You Go: Hepatitis B

It is never too early to prepare for dental hygiene school or the national board exams! One thing to know before you go: Hepatitis B. Hepatitis B is a viral infection that can affect the liver. It is transmitted via infected bodily fluids. As a dental hygienist, we work closely with patients and their oral health, which means potential exposure to Hepatitis B found in blood and saliva. Also, hepatitis B can survive for at least 7 days in dried blood left on surfaces (such as the dental chair). Did you know that most dental hygiene schools require/recommend a Hepatitis B vaccine? This vaccine protects you from Hep B and protects your patients from possible transmission. Bonus: the Hep B vaccine also protects you from Hepatitis D, as well! Fun fact: there are 5 different types of hepatitis (A,B,C,D,E).

Well, she followed that advice and went on the be successful in both dental hygiene school and business.

This episode of the Dental Hygiene Basics Podcast features Ala'a, a new dental hygiene graduate. Ala'a talks about switching from a career in special education to dental assisting, and then COVID gave her a push to apply to dental hygiene school. She talks about how she had to overcome self-doubts when applying, but that she found herself more prepared when she arrived on campus because of her dental assisting background. Ala's story will be really helpful for someone who attended college in the past, but their prerequisites are not up to date. She discussed how Concorde Career College in San Antonio was a good choice for her because it allowed her to retake her prereqs and her dental hygiene degree in only 17 months. Sonya (The Geriatric Tooth Fairy!) on Overcoming Dyslexia in Dental Hygiene School

Kim and No Dental Experience, Shadowing Hours, and Her Company Bloom RDH

This episode features Kimberly Augustus, owner of Bloom RDH, a company that helps dental hygiene graduates transition seamlessly from dental hygiene school into the working world. Kimberly started out with a career in finance before switching paths and heading to dental hygiene school at Middlesex Community College. She now teaches at the same college that she graduated from as an adjunct faculty! Kim had no prior dental experience before applying to dental hygiene school, but she didn't let that stop her. She spent time shadowing to get a feel for the dental hygiene profession before applying. Kim and Dana agree that shadowing before applying (even if it is not required on the application) is the best way to ensure that this career is right for you. Amanda (That Deaf RDH) and Applying to Dental Hygiene School Three Times

On this episode, Dana meets with Amanda Zubricki. Amanda is a clinical dental hygienist who operates the non-profit "That Deaf RDH Foundation." She graduated from Northern Virginia Community College in 2017. Her foundation provides scholarships to deaf and hard-of-hearing dental hygiene students. Amanda discusses how she applied to dental hygiene school three times. She actually ended up appealing her third rejection letter to dental hygiene school which helped her finally get accepted! Amanda overcame rejection, feelings of self doubt, and failure to succeed in her goal of earning her RDH license! She is an inspiration to anyone applying to dental hygiene school.

Dana and The Craziest Dental Hygiene School Interview Ever

Welcome to the DH Basics Podcast! This podcast was created to help future dental hygienists as they embark upon the application process and their first year of dental hygiene school. In this short episode, I introduce myself and my background. I am here to highlight the experiences of those who have successfully been accepted into and graduated from dental hygiene school. This podcast is full of tips, tricks, and personal advice from those who have been through it. Dental hygiene school is not easy, but as we all say, it's worth it!

Hey, my name is Dana. Welcome to the DH basics podcast! I am a dental hygienist and a dental hygiene educator. A little bit of background about me: I have a bachelor's degree in biology, a bachelor's degree in dental hygiene and a master's degree in aging and dementia studies. After I graduated from dental hygiene school, I worked in a clinical setting, so I worked in a private practice office for five years while I pursued my master's degree. After that, I transitioned out of clinical practice, and I transitioned into dental hygiene education, and I absolutely love it. That brings me to where I am today. Why is my background important to you? Well, I have a lot of intel and information about the collegiate process because I've been through it three times myself, and I've been working in the collegiate industry for three years. So I have a lot of background information on the admissions process, how to get into dental hygiene school, what admissions committees are looking for, and also how to help you succeed as a first year dental hygiene student. First year students often struggle with stress, overwhelm, and failures. Sometimes students even have to drop out or get dismissed because of grades or stress. There are so many things that impact a first year dental hygiene student, and I want to be here to support you through all of that. I want to help build your confidence and knowledge so that you can achieve your dreams of becoming a registered dental hygienist. This podcast will feature a lot about me, but also I will have guests from all over the country who have achieved the title of RDH, as well. I love helping students achieve their goals of becoming a dental hygienist and now I want to help you become one, too. Stay tuned for my first episode with a great RDH and friend of mine.
