The Gin Lady - with Tina from Warners Gin

Co-founder and CEO of Warners Gin Distillery, Tina Warner-Keogh started off with a mission in 2012 to save the world from mediocre gin. From a farming family, she used her gut as her guide and nature as her inspiration to diversify her husband Tom’s family farm, installing a still and growing botanicals. Tina tells the story of starting a business from scratch to pioneering the world’s first rhubarb gin. From a patriarchal family, she’s had to grow in courage and belief, steering her business through Covid and the cost of living crisis to the success it is today. Sustainability is absolutely at the heart of what she does and her mission is to the world’s leading nature-driven drinks business. She brings some china pea pods, as she’s nicknamed ‘Tina Pod’ and is very close to her Mum. She also brings some colourful ‘wings’ beaded earrings from Tanzania, which commemorate her epic climb up Kilimanjaro as well as a framed picture from her brother with a very special meaning. She says that her six minute diary helps her process her emotions and makes her focus on gratitude every day and that her dogs keep her grounded and happy. Talking To Strangers with Gill Paul

Internationally best-selling author Gill Paul has written plenty of non-fiction, but has turned her love of history into writing ‘what-if’ novels, taking real historical figures and weaving stories around them. It was her experience of teenage heartbreak that led to her write about the Romanovs in The Secret Life and The Lost Daughter, but she’s tackled all sorts of eras, from Jazz age New York, to the juicy rivalry of Jackie Onassis and Maria Callas, along with the sexist world of publishing in Scandalous Women, to name but a few. Ruby talks about how she started WUKA to provide sustainable alternatives to traditional menstrual products and to break the stigma surrounding menstruation. Growing up in Nepal, periods were never spoken about and during them, she was separated from her family and stigmatised. Moving to London when she was twenty, founding a cool brand was the last thing on her mind, but it was when she was talking to girls in schools about reusable period products and they all said they thought the idea was tacky, she had an epiphany moment, bought a second-hand sewing machine and, with the help of a YouTube video set about solving the problem herself. Starting small and perfecting the product has been key to her success, but she’s now a B-corp business and is on a mission to end period poverty, as well as tackling the issue of girls dropping out of sports at a grass roots level. Join us for our 75th episode with our round up of our favourite moments from another fabulous year of podcasting as we discuss how our guests have inspired our Christmas present list. Our entertaining literary guests included Veronica Henry who said her flashy diamanté earrings were the jewellery equivalent of a line of cocaine, whilst Lulu Taylor told us the thrilling story of how she came to own Nancy Mitford’s pearls. Our love of food shone through with culinary guests including young-at-heart food writer and illustrator Elisabeth Luard and the hilariously funny and irreverent Valentina Harris. A theme of connection came out in this latest season and Sahar Hashemi OBE really set the tone when she set up By Women Built to unite female founders and to highlight how many of our amazing brands and business are made by women. We had style and flair from influencers including Zoe de Pass @dresslikeamum, Paula Sutton @hillhousevintage and Michelle Barrett @capsuleclosetstylist and learnt about the power of red lipstick from make up artists Donna May and went on tour to meet Alice and Will from Audrey’s chocolates. We’ve heard stories of courage and resilience and people who set out to change the world and make it better, yet our guests’ life hacks were simple. They were about kindness, connection and gratitude. We hope you’ve been inspired too, and we look forward to bringing you another series in the new year. Today we're joined by inspirational entrepreneur, author and campaigner Sahar Hashemi OBE. Full of wit and wisdom, Sahar says the key to success in business is to dream big, but start small. She describes her own journey from a discontented solicitor to setting up Coffee Republic, the hugely successful coffee chain.

Having written a book called Anyone Can Do It, it was during the Covid lockdown that a simple tweet provided the catalyst for her to champion female entrepreneurship and find a way to educate people about brands built by women. Alice is proud to be a member of this incredible movement, which includes some of the best and most recognised brands in the UK today.

Disciplined and organised, Sahar is a fan of decluttering in the summer and winter, but has some special sentimental pieces she holds close, including her father’s reading glasses, a chunky gold Celine bracelet she bought in Paris, and a miniature angel gifted by her mother. The angel sits by her bed as a daily reminder that her mother is watching over her.

She says that if anything is worth doing, it’s worth doing badly — just give it a go. After all, we’re here for such a short time, we might as well go at a hundred miles an hour with our hair on fire.

Screenwriter, radio script writer and best selling author, Veronica Henry joins us from North Devon to discuss her career, her life and her special pieces of jewellery. Having written well over twenty novels, her latest 'One Night At The Château', is out in paperback today. Warm-hearted and page-turning, it has all the hallmarks of her writing that has earned her a legion of loyal fans. Refreshingly honest and down-to-earth, Veronica talks about her writing process and how, having been through a divorce, covid, bereavement and the menopause in her fifties, is now in a new phase of her life. She says she feels simultaneously super-wise and sorted and then bewildered, but she says there comes a time when you can't be shy anymore. Meet Brighton-based healer Georgia Morse who is passionate about women’s health. A trained nurse, Georgia talks about her fascinating journey into energetic and somatic healing, via a youth initiative programme in Sweden, and her work with refugees in Calais. After graduating as an NHS nurse on a respiratory ward during Covid left her burnt out, Georgia became an apprentice of The Boulderstone Technique. She found her path into women’s health when working with Afghan Refugees, helping the women to process their trauma. Now, a new mum, she’s interested in holistic approaches to healing conditions such as hay fever and working with women’s hormone imbalances. Georgia shares her wisdom on the menopause and the importance of pausing and to create space and breathing-room in midlife. If we sit still l, we tend to know what we need she says. Straight-talking, inspiring entrepreneur Sarah Willingham tells us about being a curious child, but when her Dad wouldn’t let her have a gap year, she set off to pursue her love of food and international travel in business. After learning the ropes at Pizza Express, she realised she wanted a large family and that she’d have to create her own career to make her life work with small children. She says she loves chaos and having four children in four years has meant she’s had to accept that having it all has to be a giant compromise. After recording Dragon’s Den she took off around the world with her kids and Michael her husband for three years and found clarity once the adrenalin had left her system. She says her life hack is to get back to nature and she walks to empty her mind.Now settled in Brighton, she runs Nightcap, a big hospitality business, with Michael, but when the opportunity came just before Christmas to buy the i360, she stepped in at the last moment and bought the iconic landmark, saving it from being dismantled. Sarah is passionate about regenerating the i360, particularly the building beneath the tower and she’s buzzing with plans. Fresh from the amazing Brighton marathon weekend, Sarah says the middle of the prom deserves to be activated and we couldn’t agree more. Whilst she’d be happy living in a caravan herself and not being at all materialistic, Sarah shows us a special ring that reminds her of her soul mate, Richard, and a romantic small red book she made for Michael. With Mothering Sunday upon us, we’re talking about our mums today. We’re joined entrepreneur and mum of two, Georgie Harris who describes how she had a fantastic job at Burberry, but then her world changed when her son was born with a rare genetic condition, Russell Silver Syndrome which affects growth. After a harrowing pregnancy and birth, Georgie then discovered herself navigating the SEN system and becoming a primary carer, negotiating support for her child’s complex needs. After her second son was born in 2023, she started looking for jobs, but couldn’t find one, let alone one that could fit in with her life. Then, at a kids birthday party, she met Bex who suggested a skills swap and Mums Who Build was born. With a non-mumsy vibe, Georgie and Bex’s networking organisation has the aim of closing the wealth gap and reducing the impact of the motherhood penalty. The MOB (for short) helps Mums at all stages develop skills and confidence through workshops, events and meet-ups based on the three pillars of wellbeing, connections and financial education. With new found sense of purpose and having been on a healing journey through the connections she’s made at The Mob, Georgie says her ambition is to have Mums Who Build around the country. She says she wears her jewellery the whole time, including some personal bangles from her family and shows us her inspirational late grandmother’s engagement ring, who she describes as the glue of the family. Our guest this week is legendary food writer, illustrator and broadcaster Elisabeth Luard. Joining us from London, Elisabeth candidly recalls adventures from her extraordinary life, describing how, after growing up in Uruguay and boarding school, she was a young journalist on Private Eye, when she met her husband, Nicholas Luard. Marrying at 21 and having four children in quick succession, Elisabeth decamped to rural Andalusia, finding a way into food writing and the traditional recipes via the locals at the school gates where her kids learnt to trap and skin rabbits. After a couple of shows in a top wildlife gallery exhibiting her natural history paintings, she started writing about food in 'The Field' magazine accompanied by her own illustrations, but her passion was to write a book about real peasant cookery and the importance of knowing the land, the limitations of fresh produce and only using what's seasonal and local. A concept that seemed transgressive at the time, but has, as she says, come full circle. Full of wisdom and wit, Elisabeth has travelled all over the world and enlightens us about some of the foods she's encountered along the way, such smoked reindeer tongue, as well as making a case for bringing back salep, a powdered dried orchid root. She doesn't 'do' jewellery as she's always cooking, but she shows us two of her treasured rings - a sapphire ring belonging to her late daughter, Francesca, as well her welsh gold wedding ring. Now running a creative hub in her Brighton studio, Sophie does workshops and feels passionately about nurturing younger creative talent. The funny story behind her wedding ring with braille on the outside because ‘Love is Blind’, as well as a beautiful ‘Darling’ necklace, which is a collaboration with a local tattoo artist and self-taught jeweller James Robinson. It’s all about costumes this week as Josie heads to New York and is getting a costume together for The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Talking of costume jewellery, their guest this week is Sophie Adler Mckean who tells us the story of her great aunt Mimi, who came to the UK via Greece as a refugee escaping Austria before the war. Mimi’s father set up a factory making the metal parts of bailey bridges, which later became a factory making parts for jewellery called Jewelcraft. When it was taken over by Corocraft, Mimi became the head jewellery designer, relocating the factory to Crawley. Mimi was often in the press and was called ‘One of London’s most glamorous business women.’ Sophie shows us lots of Mimi’s incredible necklaces, earrings and brooches and talks about how her family donated some of the spectacular pieces to the V&A. Meet Jo Tutchener, who founded her amazing company Scamp and Dude after a life-changing brain haemorrhage made her completely reassess her life. She realised that if she were to die, she hadn’t done enough to help people and vowed that if she got better, she’d do something to make a difference. Terrified of leaving her young sons when she went into brain surgery, the idea of the Superhero Sleep Buddies was born. This was quickly followed by a clothing line for kids, all with the superpower button embroidered on the sleeve so kids could press it to feel better when they were scared or had to be away. Scamp and Dude launched into Liberty along with women’s sweatshirts also with the embroidered bolt. They were so popular they sold out instantly. Now Jo’s women’s collection has sky-rocketed and she’s expanded into stores around the country. Jo has also launched the superpower-infused printed scarfs and for every one sold, one is gifted to a woman going through chemotherapy. So far Jo has sent out over 45,000. There are 27 armed conflicts in the world going on right now and this week we’re talking to Sara Bowcutt, the Managing Director of Women For Women UK, an incredible charity that invests in the power and potential of women affected by war.

The charity enrols women into a twelve month programme and helps them by supporting their health and well-being, teaching them about their rights, gives them practical skills and business training so that they can start to earn and save money. Sara describes how these women, often in the most war-torn, poverty-stricken places in the world, find hope and strength in the sisterhood the programme helps create.

Sara’s awe-inspiring life involves travelling to far off countries to meet and support these displaced women and their families, then a few days later organise and attend glamorous events and meet high-end brands and individuals in order to raise much needed funds to support the charity. This is how I became involved and was invited to Kosovo to pass on my skills and meet these incredible women affected by war, whose stories inspired me to make the @W4WI 'share a hug' collection. The proceeds of which help support the charity.

Sara talked very movingly about her work and then shared the stories behind her dainty and chunky pieces that mean the most to her, including some of the 'She Dares' beaded bracelets each made by a woman in one of the programmes, as well as the beautiful vintage diamond ring which she bought for herself, when she achieved her dream.

Someone who firmly believes in the sisterhood, Sara says that all of her most meaningful jewellery pieces were gifted to her by the special women in her life.

This is an enlightening episode and well worth a visit.

Working with the movement Ageism Is Never In Style, Claire aims to give older women body confidence and says how important it is to love your body as it is right now, not as it might be or how it was. Our special guest is podcast royalty and veteran journalist, Marianne Jones. She candidly talks about moving ‘kicking and screaming’ from London to Sevenoaks which she describes as a ‘Gilet, with a fun lining kind of a place'. She found herself bonding over a designer coatigan with mid-fluencer Kat Farmer. When Marianne interviewed Kat about her book, ‘Get Changed’ their chemistry was instant, and the number one podcast ‘Been There, Done That, Got The Podcast’ was born.

Before the podcast Marianne says she was busy having a burnout, having been an journalist since the age of seventeen, moving from local papers, to features editor at Marie Claire, then editor at More magazine, (which Alice fondly remembers for position of the fortnight). Eventually she was an editor at the Daily Mirror and then went on to launched Grazia in the UK and Stella Magazine for the Telegraph. But over the years, Marianne has seen huge changes in journalism and was brave enough to pivot into an exciting new career. She is a champion of the midlife demographic and how women shouldn’t just be defined by their hormones and the menopause. ‘We’re the very desirable filling in the sandwich,' she says and brands need to wake up.

Marianne adores jewellery and she describes her love of Tiffany. She touchingly tells us how her husband surprised her on her wedding day with a Tiffany heart ring and necklace. She talks bout Joe, her eldest son and how he discovered jewellery design through YouTube and has pursued a career, working in the oldest jewellery quarter in Birmingham. He designed what will undoubtedly be a precious family heirloom - a beautiful gold maltese cross for Marianne’s Maltese mother, for her eightieth birthday, sourcing gold and a ruby from Malta.

Warm, funny and wise, Marianne says that your love affair has to be with your work. She talks about how important it is to find your thing, and to not be afraid of getting there by unconventional routes. She's proof that unexpected joys come when you carry on being curious and learn something new, even if it’s scary.

We’re getting into women’s empowerment this week. Alice discusses her second viewing of the Barbie film (involved a party, obvs!) and we talk to our guest, Jess Rad founder of @thewomen_hood which was born out of a desire to connect women through the unspoken challenges of womanhood. Jess describes how she accidentally set up a WhatsApp group to connect women in her local area which, from humble beginnings, has become a huge business resource in Brighton with women finding each other jobs, getting business and connecting in the most positive of ways. Her mission is to bring women together to share their stories about everything from miscarriage to menopause to mental health, to confidence, sex and money. She built a business of live events called Unspoken Women which she took online during Covid and is now a Podcast. Jess shows us her lovely jewellery that reminds her of her family including the David Morris ring her Dad gave her for her twenty-first which he gave so that she could sell it for a plane ticket home when she went travelling. A keen Otillo Swim Run enthusiast, Jess is intrepid, brave and totally inspiring, Jess made us feel like we can all rule the world.

This week we bring you the magic of poetry, with our inspirational guest David Attree who is a spoken word performer, as well as a broadcaster, charity fundraiser, long distance cyclist and a paralympi-parent supporting his daughter, Fabs, a GB wheelchair racer On the show, he describes his transformation following serious heart surgery and a stroke and brings along his special keepsake - a Fisher Space Pen. Carrying it everywhere he goes, David tells the touching story of how he came to own it in 2010 and how, since then, he’s been inspired to write and perform poetry. He tells us about the poetry takeaway - a takeaway snack van with three poets inside who cook up poems on the spot. Becoming a poetry chef has given him some extraordinary insights into people's deepest feelings. We were lucky enough to put him on the spot and he kindly recited his poem, 'Appetite' which was on BBC Upload. Giving himself the challenge of writing a poem inspired by the first word he heard on the radio, this thoughtful mediation on creativity will particularly appeal to anyone who has ever experienced writer’s block. David can be heard on The week in words on Allison Fern's BBC Radio show.

Scandal, duplicity and secrets with our special guest New Yorker, Donna Freed who is a journalist and writer living in London and the founder of Radio Gorgeous, the longest running all-female podcast. On today’s episode, she tells us the story of discovering she was adopted when she was six years old, but was never able to discuss it with her family. When her adoptive mother died in 2009 Donna set out to track down her birth mother. What she discovered was truly shocking - that she was the daughter of a pair of infamous con artists, at the heart of one of the biggest true crime stories to grip the USA in the 1960s. Donna has recently written a memoir, 'Duplicity' which the New York Times described as reading like a thriller. Donna says her jewellery is like tattoos for her, each piece having an origin story and a special place in her heart. She opens her bold and fabulous jewellery box to show us her bits - each ring bearing a special memory of her fascinating family. Funny, irreverent and wise, Donna’s attitude of 'just going for it' is truly inspiring.

Our guest is our friend and phenomenal artist, Natasha Kissell, who tells us about her journey from being an unpopular student at the Royal Academy to earning her place as a YBA, when Charles Saatchi bought her entire final show. She now exhibits her unique landscape paintings in galleries all over Europe. And, as if that wasn’t enough, along with her teaching and musical life, she also paints spectacular murals. Natasha has a fabulously unconventional and bold sense of style and in her jewellery box, she shows us the huge Alexander McQueen skull ring she received to celebrate the birth of her daughter, Lux. She also shows us her late mother’s jewellery from South Africa and how these statement pieces, with big painted beads and beaten metals, give her a precious link to her past and her mother’s glamorous swimming pool parties in the 1970s.
