It's one of the most significant music copyright cases of the last decades, with significant and widespread implications for both the mainstream music world and underground dance music. In the UK, a study found that if nightlife continues struggling at the same rate, there will be no clubs by 2030. Some of these issues are perennial, but the reality is that “Clubsterben” is accelerating – even though there seems to be more money in nightlife than ever. So what impact do these closures have on artists and audiences? Are clubs still actually centers of musical and social communities? And what role does the internet play in all of this? We invited the Berlin-based DJ duo Surf 2 Glory of Club Heart Broken and Venus Vessels to talk about their experiences navigating this shifting landscape.

As a queer, black, female artist working with everyone from Solange to PinkPantheress, Swarovski to Ferragamo, Kelela has been pushing boundaries on representation in music and fashion since the early 2010s. After disappearing from the public and taking an extended social media hiatus, Kelela reemerged in 2023 with the critically acclaimed album RAVEN. Her sound dances at the intersection of R&B and electronic dance music. However, her work remains unapologetic in the way it honors the black roots of club music and culture.

In conversation with The Week host Kikelomo, Kelela dives into her approach of educating and reading, her RAVEN era, the possibility of building worlds and communities –and the importance of staying offline sometimes.

Harry Nuriev in Conversation: transformism, comfort in design, MTV Cribs

Harry Nuriev is an architect, a furniture designer, and an artist. He describes his approach as "transformism": creating new and exciting designs with what we already have, in contrast to producing something entirely new. Whether it is sofas made out of winnowed clothes, gamer chairs covered with lace, or a swimming pool tiled like a Photoshop transparency layer – with his company Crosby Studios, Nuriev finds beauty where no one else wants to look, transforming objects and spaces and incorporating the digital into the real world. OttO Kent and Harry Nuriev dive into the inspiration behind his work, where he’s coming from, and where he’s heading – as well as his view on MTV Cribs and old school RnB hits.

This Electronic Beats Podcast takes a different trajectory to our usual hosted format and this time we offer a panel talk discussion from the Equal eSports Festival at Digital X in Cologne. The panel addressed the role of equality and gaming in art with American new media artist Angela Washko, art collector Julia Stoschek and Antje Hundhausen, founder of the #equalesports initiative at Deutsche Telekom.

In video games, performances and through digital interventions, Angela Washko explores the roots of misogyny in digital and physical spaces. One of her works is currently presented in the exhibition 'Worldbuilding - Videogames and Art in the Digital Age' in Düsseldorf, which is curated by Hans Ulrich Obrist on the occasion of the 15th anniversary of fellow panellist Julia Stoschek’s Collection.

Throughout the discussion the three talk on the relationship between gaming and art, the designers and artists behind them and the inherent issue of sexism, racism and homophobia experienced in games. The panellist’s also exchange views on the lack of women’s stories in the gaming world, pushing and blurring the boundaries, creating a safe space for women gamers and cancel culture in the eminent role-player game World of Warcraft. The discourse also leads to touch on the threads between gaming and the arts, making critical art in games, media-based artists and creators and choosing artists for exhibitions.

Hania was initially inspired to study classical music and was later introduced to jazz and electronics at music school, widening her interests and as she puts it, “mixing Chopin & Schostakovitch with Dave Brubeck and Moderat”. Other inspirations include composers such as Max Richter, Esbjorn Svensson, Miles Davis, Nils Frahm, Murcof, Portico Quartet, Radiohead and even The Beatles. But Rani’s inspirations aren’t just musical, she has drawn inspiration from places she has lived and visited. Over the past few years Rani’s music has gained widespread recognition, earning many acclamations such as the Sanki Award as the “New Face of Polish Music” and Transatlantyk Golden Ark Award for “Best Young Polish Composer” amongst others. Recent years have seen Hiani scoring soundtracks for several movies, collaborating with the likes of Portico Quartet and Christian Löffler and performing live shows for ARTE and Cercle, her unfaltering drive has made Rani one of the most intriguing artists in the contemporary classical world.In this episode our Host Lindi Delight speaks with her about initial spark for her love for music, first touch with the piano, meaning of improvisation, classic and neoclassic music, Melancholie and much more.

Bernstein’s work has captured the heart and soul of the Disco scene of 1970’s New York, the beginnings of club culture and its accompanying fashion, style and the feelings of freedom and liberation that come with it. He’s also been Sir Paul McCartney’s personal photographer since 1989, photographed Keith Richards and even delved back into the contemporary electronic music scene of New York to photograph the people of Brooklyn’s current nightlife and club circuit in the project ‘Brooklyn Nites’.

On top of this she’s held down residencies at Metalheadz and Swerve, collaborated with Breakage and Redeyes and runs her own label Play:Musik. Mantra, alongside partner Double O, also found her way into the spotlight through her highly acclaimed Rupture events which over the past 12 years has welcomed the likes of D-Bridge and Doc Scott amongst many others, the club nights accompanying label has also released material from Forest Drive West, Coco Bryce and more and Mantra’s own productions have garnered widespread support from many leading figures in the field. Throughout the podcast our host Lindi Delight discussed the pair’s EQ50 initiative which endeavours to bring a more equal representation within the genre, while also offering mentorship for women and non-binary people. The three also discuss the history of Drum & Bass, Tokenism and how everyone in the industry can help bring more balance and diversity to the electronic music scene in general.

Dimitri Hegemann – Kulturbetrieb

Anfang der 90er Jahre gründete Dimitri Hegemann den Techno Club und das gleichnamige Music Label Tresor. Seitdem ist er aus dem Kulturbetrieb nicht mehr wegzudenken.In der neuen Folge steht Kulturmanager und Techno-Vordenker Dietmar-Maria Hegemann, besser bekannt als Dimitri Hegemann im Fokus. Anfang der 90er Jahre gründete er den Techno Club Tresor sowie das gleichnamige Music Label. Zudem ist er u.a. Initiator des Berlin Atonal Festivals und bis heute in Berliner Restaurants sowie in verschiedenen Kultur fördernden Projekten involviert.Im Podcast spricht Dimitri Hegemann mit Jakob Thoene über sein Mitwirken an der Berliner Kulturwirtschaft und die Veränderungen in der elektronischen Musikszene. Hegemann berichtet von seiner Liebe zu Berlin und beschreibt, wie die Stadt für ihn klingt. Er erzählt von seiner Jugend in einer kleinen Gemeinde in NRW, der alternativen Musikszene der 80er Jahre und von seinem Mitwirken an zahlreichen kulturellen Projekten, wie z.B. dem Avantgarde Festival Berlin Atonal, das von 1982–1990 unter der Leitung Hegemanns stand und seit 2013 wieder jährlich stattfindet.Aktuell beschäftigt sich Dimitri Hegemann mit seinem Projekt Happy Locals. Damit möchte er der Abwanderung von Jugendlichen aus ihren Gemeinden entgegenwirken und gemeinsam mit ihnen einen Raum zum Experimentieren schaffen.

Inspiriert von den Sick Girls, die vor circa 14 Jahren unter Anderem von Johanna Grabsch gegründet wurden, fand sie ihren Weg zum DJ Pult und ins Berliner Nachtleben. Johanna Grabsch legt mittlerweile selbst nicht mehr auf, arbeitet aber als Bookerin von Sarah Farina und als Kuratorin für das renommierte CTM Berlin Festival for Adventurous Music and Art. Wie ist Clubkultur in Deutschland entstanden?Unser erster Gast ist die Techno-Legende DJ Hell. Seit über 40 Jahren ist er am Nachtleben beteiligt und aus der internationalen Musik- und Techno-Szene nicht mehr wegzudenken. Begonnen hat Hell seine Karriere in seiner Heimat Altenmark als Punk- und New Wave-DJ, bevor er zur elektronischen Musik gefunden hat.Dabei spielte, wie er im Podcast erzählt, auch sein Umzug in die Techno-Metropole Berlin eine wichtige Rolle. Anfang der 90er Jahre arbeitet Hell als Resident in Berlins bekanntesten Techno Clubs Tresor und Watergate und gründet sein renommiertes Plattenlabel International Deejay Gigolos. Außerdem produziert er Musik für Modenschauen und ist einer der Ersten, der elektronische Musik, nicht immer frei von Kritik, erfolgreich mit Mode und Kunst verbindet.Im Interview mit Gesine Kühne spricht DJ Hell über seine Erlebnisse in 40 Jahren Nachtleben.
