The Brickwork that formed the bulk of the structure was a deep, rich red, and its thick paned windows held with iron latches seemed to ready for troubled spirits that might have the inclination to flee.

Jules pointed to a big, bright sign hand-painted with a map illustrating the entire park - from the entrance the path lead them through the new innovation exhibitions, down to the sideshow and acrobatic tents and food midway, past the funhouse then on closer to the water with the mermaid water show and diving tank and then the imposing face peeler roller coaster that swung out over the water. Then past a floating barge with a boxing ring exhibition sponsored by Duncan’s Matches And then at the end of the pier, a giant aeronautical balloon made of canvas in bright colors netted and tethered at the pier side for a lucky few random raffle winners to ascend into the clouds at dusk to see the expanse of the city, the illuminated Vega’s light wheel and Celestial park in all of its radiant brilliance.

The Sotto Voce, the house of whispers, created from the remnants of a ghost ship, employed in an opera by a maestro that slowly went mad. Four neighborhood children were trapped inside. Three little girls had been chased to the basement, by an old musical feind, but now having crept back up the stairs, they peered through a crack and realized their troubles had tripled.

Enocke Green, the runaway boy was somewhere in the house, but the three girls. Temperance, Antigone, and Masie were calming in the temporary safety of the dark stairwell, lit only by matchlight.

Temperance and Antigone couldn't hear the house scream, but helped Masie limp along to compensate for her vertigo.

Three monstrous trucks drove around the pond edge to the end of the road in front of the Park Row mansions. Trailing a short distance behind was an old carriage carrying four old, bent men wiping the condensation from the windows so they could see. The trucks arrived, the first carrying a crew of heavy laborers that had agreed to triple wage for an intense overnight shift, to quickly make work of demolishing the old Maestro’s house, The Sotto Voce. The second held something under heavy rain cover and the third truck had a load of tethered barrels.

It was a gloomy morning at the edge of Parvum Pond. The early mist had not dissipated, but instead climbed up the slight incline, engulfing the vanguard of the park row mansions and mixing with the slight drizzle from the grey sky. Four old buzzards in capes and top hats, sat hunched in an undecorated coach as it pulled up past The houses of Lavendula, Mulberry, Halite, and beyond a thick, overgrown hedge filled with dark thorns, bramble, and tiny poisonousness berries.

The Show must go on. Max and company spared the reputation of Madame Mustaches, Max pre-sold tickets to real opening of Pharaoh and booked in an entire season of acts to the stage, including a new magician's act featuring a spirit cabinet. Bennet interrogated Rudy Valerio at Needle street with some of the other inspectors. Charity thanked Max for his hospitality but set off into the city once again, a copy of The Lantern newspaper in her hands and a job circled in pencil.

Hope’s fingers wrapped around Charity’s neck, her thumbs pressing hard on her trachea. Charity had just slipped from consciousness just behind the curtain in the dark stage of the variety theater Madame Mustache’s. The audience had breached the doors, slowly streaming in and taking their seats. The house a murmur of rumors of the murder that had taken place on that very stage the night before. One slight tug on the curtain rope and the audience would be witnessing the second murder on that very spot and open the show to the one night only Murder Follies.
