Since starting Cadence in 2014 at the ripe old age of 26, Charlie has led over $1.5 billion of deals including $600 million in acquisitions and $872 million of disposals across 36 transactions, achieving an average net equity IRR of over 70 per cent.

Now Charlie's embarking on his next mission an investment platform, the Cadence Australian Real Estate Partnership, which is targeting value add real estate opportunities across Australia. Not bad for a bloke who's yet to celebrate his 40th birthday.

We’re exploring Podia’s hotel-apartment development in Byron Bay known as The Bonobo by Raes. 

Located on Byron’s iconic Jonson Street, the Podia approach to developing this site is, well, quite unique. 

In this episode, Michael and I explore everything from acquiring the former backpackers site during the middle of Covid, dealing with a traditionally-hostile local community, engaging an award-winning design team to procuring a builder during a construction crisis and selling a once-in-a-generation investment opportunity to a sophisticated buyer segment.

In this episode, Toby shares with me the extraordinary story behind Marquette’s acquisition of an $82 million dollar prime retail investment in Barangaroo, Sydney. Why is this extraordinary? Because the whole thing - from being brought the opportunity, undertaking due diligence, raising the capital, securing bank debt and finalising the settlement - happened in less than a month. 

Toby even managed to take a surfing holiday in the middle of all of this. 

This particular deal is a lesson in two things: the power of good relationships and an attitude of getting it done.
