This week's special guest Roger Field is definitely no stranger when it comes to the Major Concert landscape. His expertise has and still covers all gamuts of the touring industry- ticketing, venue management, festival production and major concert promotion of course.

He served as CEO of Live Nation Australia from 2014 to 2020 before was tasked with the premium role of President for Live Nation Asia Pacific. This speaks for itself.

In 2024 however, and arguably at his prime, Roger did an an about-turn that no one saw coming and resigned from the Company.

Today he runs his own business, the aptly titled 'Further Afield', which is a business designed to assist and help new enterprises that need sound advice in helping to navigate through the many layers and nuances of the Entertainment Industry.

So why the change? Why leave the perceived comfort of working with the likes of Harry Styles, Pink, Adele and Bruno Mars amongst many, many others to go out alone?

Is there more to his story or is it simply a case of personal re-invention in an ever-changing industry climate. Lets hear what Roger has to say and let me tell you, there are no mincing of words.

Daniel Merriweather; The Prince Of Soul

It's almost a case of 'whatever happened to...' with my first guest on Season 5 in 2026. His name is Daniel Merriweather, arguably, one of this country's greatest ever soul singers, producers and writers.

His career has certainly had it's fair share of up's and down's , high's and low's but in 2026 he continues to strive to produce real, uncompromising and ground-breaking music.

He has tasted bona fide chart and commercial success both in Australia and abroad and has rubbed creative shoulders with the likes of uber producer Mark Ronson, the incredible and late Amy Winehouse and the juggernaut that is Adele.

He has also had some interesting encounters with such luminaries as JZ , Beyonce and Clive Davis, but then also some questionable encounters including one with disgraced artist and so-called entrepreneur P. Diddy.

He knows what it's like to play the 'industry game' through his stints living and working in LA, New York and London and his story is as much about survival than it is about the trials and tribulations of navigating your way through the dog-eat-dog jungle of the urban music business. In his first interview in quite a while, we get to hear his stories and what continues to drive him in 2026.

Anyone who can spit into Johnny Lydon's (yes of Sex Pistols fame) sushi and get away with it should automatically be inducted into the Australian Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame. And this is only one of many stories that Chrissie Vincent has in her arsenal of rock and roll anecdotes.

There's no denying Chrissie is a trailblazer. She started her career in 1981, when the local music industry was beginning to come into it's own. She has worked in pretty much every facet of the business and she has worked with a vast array of artists. From Bowie and Lenny Kravitz and from The Living End to Pete Murray, she has definitely packed in a hell of a lot in these last 44 years.

Today, you'll find Chrissie imparting her infinite wisdom in her role as the Head of Entertainment Management at Collarts College in Melbourne. And if you think she has lost any of the fire and passion that she is renown for, then think again. She has a lot to say about the music industry, about local radio and about the importance of keeping Australian Music alive and kicking. Emmanuel Zunz; ONErpm Around The World

Paris born, US based music entrepreneur Emmanuel Zunz has always been fiercely independent. His music roots are steeped in philanthropy. He started his very first music venture 'Verge Records' back in 2007. It was an innovative record label predicated on releasing music from artists who lived in impoverished neighbourhoods in the US to yield profits to put back into those communities. While it was a relatively short-lived exercise, the seeds of enabling and empowering young musicians had been sown.

Today, Emmanuel is the Head of ONErpm, a data driven global aggregator label that prides itself on representing DIY creators and established independent artists and labels from all around the world. The operation has now spread to 43 offices in 26 countries, including an Australian office run by respected music executive Rick Butterworth.

Mitch Clark; Westend Girl

Simon Moor; The Disruptor

Simon Moor has been in the business of Artist Discovery for all of his professional career, first as an A&R manager via his stints at Sony Music & EMI and then as a creative inside SonyATV Publishing. We sure as hell had some great A&R stouch's in the 90's fighting for the same bands but Simon always had a great ear for finding new music.

In 2010, his professional trajectory took a major upturn when he helped launch and run Kobalt Music Publishing, which he still successfully presides over today.

Scott Horscroft; The Method Man

I don't use the words 'one-of-a-kind' very often, but my first guest of 2025 - Scott Horscroft - is certainly worth of the mantle I've bestowed upon him. He's one of the best producers in this country, if not the world. Doesn't do things by halves and certainly doesn't professionally either. I liken him to a a method actor, only in a parallel world of music production. He has been involved in some of the most seminal albums from the early 2000's and you only have to look at his sparkling CV to appreciate it- The Pre Sets, Silverchair, T-Kay Maidza, The DMA's, Empire Of the Sun et al. Emanating from a 'Fine Arts' background at University clearly impacted his approach to making music, but even more he has been able to master the art of having one foot in art and one foot in commerce. He has worked in all facets of the music business- producer, A&R executive, writer, educator, mentor, entreprenuer, et al. He's not short of a word and he's not gun shy. He's one of the Mohican's who has helped shaped a big part of our culture and our music history.

MSqaured Productions are a very successful Melbourne based music production duo who have been able to seamlessly transition to and traverse between many music genres throughout their 12 year journey together.

Michael De Lorenzis and Michael Paynter started out as the 'go-to' guys for mainstream pop production and artist development and over the course of the last few years have managed to cleverly pivot and buck pigeon holes. They have been working with artists from the EDM world, the urban pop world and, more recently, the every growing country music space. You only need to look at their CV in order to get a sense of how far they have come- Aloe Blacc, TKay Maidza, Charlie Collins, Tina Arena, Budgerah, Casey Barnes and James Johnston are just some of the names that have helped them amass upwards of 200 million streams across their vast catalogue. Alice Ivy; The Heiress

I call Alice Ivy 'The Heiress' for good reason! She is at the forefront of modern music production, not just in Australia but she is also starting to make some serious noise on the international stage. I'd even go as far as saying that she's destined to be our next big superstar producer!

Her production work has evolved so beautifully since she announced her arrival with her brilliant debut album 'I'm Dreaming' in 2018. The way Alice can effortlessly guide and negotiate her way through various genres- Electro Funk, Soul and Pop (indie and otherwise)- is so genuinely exciting to hear. Jan Skubiszewski; The Journeyman

Jan Skubiszewski is somewhat of a journeyman producer. I first met Jan when he was cutting his production teeth at Marlon Studios in Prahran, Melbourne some 20 odd years ago. At the time, he was working with a slew of up and coming soul and urban acts and making ground breaking music with the likes of Daniel Merriweather (who went on to sign to Mark Ronson) and pioneering local MC, Phrase.

Fast forward to more recent times and you can find Jan's fingerprints all over albums by The Cat Empire, John Butler and Dan Sultan. all of which had significant critical and commercial success.

And much like his celebrated father Cezary (a legend in his own right), Jan is also an accomplished songwriter, musician and a soundtrack/score composer. His work on soundtracks such as 'Two Hands', "Brand Nue Day' and Red Dog to name a few have earned him many awards and accolades. Then there's his TV work too on HBO's 'Picnic At Hanging Rock' and the award winning 'Lille J and Big Cuz' which have also helped propel him to new heights in such competitive terrain.

Anna Laverty; The Sound Sorceress

Season 4 kicks off today with a new series; THE PRODUCERS. And the first supernova cab to leave the rank is a revered and celebrated giant of the Australian music production landscape. Francois Tetaz is arguably one of the most successful producers in our history. His work with Gotye alone- which has amassed millions upon millions of streams/sales & every award imaginable (including 3 Grammy Awards)- has put Franc in a stratosphere all of his own. The Future Of Touring

Welcome to the second instalment of Vinyl Tap's live panel sessions as part of the BIG THINKERS series. In this fresh episode , we didn't ask a question as such but my special guests and I discussed the state of the live music industry in Australia. Paul Wiltshire is somewhat of a music maverick, in the most positive ways of course. He started his music career as a pop writer and music producer amassing an impressive 12 Number One hits and a further 28 Top 20 hits with the likes of Delta Goodrem, Vanessa Amorossi, Human Nature and The Backstreet Boys. Even more impressive is the fact that he has made an album with Engelbert Humperdinck, but I digress here!

He then went and made a massive U-Turn and pivoted to music tech and boy what a change it has been. His company, Songtradr, has in a relatively short period of time managed to raise a staggering $180 million US! No mean feat for anyone, let alone a pop music producer from Australia. What is Songtradr and where does it fit in within the global music landscape? And why did they buy Bandcamp? Further to this, why did they invest in the Vinyl Group, an Australian based music and multi-media company that houses Jaxta (the IMDB of the music publishing industry), Brag Media (home to Rolling Stone Magazine and The Music Network) and Vampr (a social network platform that connects musicians globally). So many questions, all of which will be answered by Paul in this week's BIG THINKER episode.

Colin Daniels; The Impresario

Colin Daniels has been around and around and around some more in the music business. Starting off his music journey as a fresh faced DJ in the very early 90's, he has operated under many guises over the years. He has co-owned a dance label in Vicious Records, was responsible for importing some of the biggest dance records via his role at Mushroom Distribution Services in the 90's and then flew the coop to the UK to help set up the Mushroom Records office in London. If you thought that wasn't enough, he also held senior A&R roles at EMI Records both in Australia and in Europe before going on to help run Inertia Records (and by extension getting involved in touring through Handsome Touring) before, more recently, being head hunted to become the MD of SXSW Sydney. He has packed so much in his journey so far and, thankfully, he has invited me to enter into his cone of silence to help me unpack it all in this short but incredibly entertaining new episode of Vinyl Tap- The Big Thinkers!

Cath Haridy; All Flair, No Floss

It's both frightening and heartwarming to know that I've known Cath Haridy for 25 years. She began working with me firstly at Warner Music as my assistant before we both moved over to Festival Mushroom in the late 90's to start a new label imprint called SPUTNIK. From very early on is those formative years I could tell that Cath was a 'stayer' in this business. She cut her teeth and excelled in all facets of the business of artist development and A&R, but what shone through (and still does) is her passion and love for Australian music. She is fiercely loyal, hard working, supremely switched on and she can hold a conversation with anyone in the business, no matter what level they are on. Most of all, though, she knows how to treat and work with artists. Watching her develop and grow Eskimo Joe almost singlehandedly as one example, almost feels like watching a lesson in proper Artist Management in real time! This is a must-listen interview for all aspiring managers from someone who taught me more than what I taught them over the years!

Sarah Hamilton is a veteran of the digital music space. As an early adopter of digital music, Sarah started at Myspace at a time when no one really cared that much about it before ending up at DITTO where she ran the show for a considerable amount of time. Bec Young is a woman of taste and this is reflected in the roster she represents as both a live agent and a Director of Collective Artists. Her roster is immense and is about as eclectic as you can get right now- Julia Jacklin, Sarah Blasko, Tia Gostelow, Emma Donovan and Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever are just some of the names she has helped along the way.

And together they are responsible for forming ONE OF ONE, a charity/platform and website that celebrates women and people for their achievements in the music industry. It is fast becoming a powerful voice and one that has no intention of staying quiet.

Danny Rogers; Laneways and Lifeways

Then there's the Laneway Festival which in 2025 turns 21 years young. It's the programming of that festival that really exemplifies everything that Danny has stood and stands for with his career. Josh Simons; The Pivot Master

Season 3 kicks off with my BIG THINKERS series and the first duck in the pond is Josh Simons, the CEO of Vinyl Group. Josh started his music career as a professional musician. His band 'Buchanan' had considerable success but it was while he was contemplating his long term future for his band that he came up with the idea for Vampr - think Linkedin for music creatives! His quest for success with Vampr lead him on a journey to the US where he continued to finesse the tech and to raise more money. COVID then got in the way which turned out to be a blessing in disguise. Josh had bigger idea's and decided to make Vampr a sum of a bigger part. First he went and brought JAXTA - the IDMB for Music- and then Brag Media (home to Rolling Stone and themusic.com) to sit alongside Vampr. Combined the company is now known as the VINYL GROUP- the first ASX-listed music company in Australia. So what's next for Josh and his vision for the new company???

Richard Bron; Metalmorphisis

Richard Bron comes from Rock Royal stock in the UK. His grandfather was one of the UK's first music publishers and his father Gerry signed and recorded some of the most seminal British bands of all time- Uriah Heap, The Damned and the legendary Motorhead to name a key few.

Richard himself has done the hard yards having first moved to New York as a 16 year old to head up Bronze Records. a JV he established with the the legendary Chris Blackwell of Island Records fame. He has worked in all facets of the business- Recording, Management, Publishing and Concert Promotion- and some of the names under his umbrella (besides motorhead of course) include Def Leppard, Robbie William and Metallica.

What's most impressive about Richard other than the fact that he saw Elvis LIVE in Vegas and hung with Bob Marley in the UK, is the fact that he pivoted into the digital world well before most of his peers and is now regarded as one of the foremost thought leaders on the convergence of media, entertainment and technology. Today, he has been developing the most advanced Free Roaming Hyper Reality Business in the world and he belives LIVE music is heading down an inevitable and interesting road.

Emma Banks; The Agents' Agent

When I think of the world's biggest and most successful agents , it's hard to go past Emma Banks. As Co-Head of CAA UK, Emma is responsible for a roster that includes Muse, Katy Perry, Arcade Fire, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Lorde, Green Day and our very own Kylie Minogue. And for all the wonderful and well deserved awards that she has earned over the years (She's a 10 x winner of Poll Stars UK Agent Of The Year for starters), it's important to note that Emma has not only paid her dues but she is responsible for breaking some of the most important and legendary acts of all time. Her story about discovering Jeff Buckley before anyone really knew he existed is only but one of many she has in her arsenal of tales and anecdotes from her long and illustrious career. When she's not sleeping, Emma also finds time to sit on the board of Luton Town FC in the English Championship League as well as breeding race horses, a passion she has had since she was a kid. To say that she doesn't do things by half would be a proper understatement.

Korda Marshall; King Korda

Korda Marshall is an A&R King amongst Kings in the UK and a long term player in the global music industry. He has owned his own label (Infectious), run other indie labels (Mushroom UK) as well as a major label (Warner Music UK) and along the way has had major success at every step. His ethos is imbedded in a punk rock style attitude in that he has always defied convention and the so called rules of the game, but at the very core of what he does so well is his ability to spot talent. Whether it was finding Take That at a time that no one believed in them or the time that he took a chance on a young Irish pop punk trio in Ash or when he steered the global careers of Muse, Garbage and our very own Temper Trap, the fact remains- it was achieved on his terms and on his creative watch. In this interview, he gives us a real insight into his inner thoughts about the industry, his place in it and what he aims to achieve as the head of Mushroom Group of Labels in the UK.

It's scary to think I've known Kim Frankiewicz for near on 30 years. She was a formidable force back then, let alone what she has become now. Now London based as Head of Global A&R for Concord Music, Kim's career continues to grow grow and blossom. She's tenacious and focused, sprightly and exuberant and she is always looking to stay one step ahead of the curve. I met with her in her London office for a little trip down memory lane and to also hear her thoughts about where music publishing is heading.

Roger Grierson; The Unorthodox King of Spin

While many of you listeners may not have heard the name before, Roger Grierson can rightfully be regarded as a stalwart of the alternative music scene in Australia. Roger is a product of the global punk era of the 1970's! That's when he started his journey, first as an artist then as a manager then going on to be a tour promoter, a music publishing honcho and, ultimately a chairman of Australia's first every music company Festival Records.

When you look at the list of names he is associated with- The Buzzcocks, Jesus Jones, Pop will Eat Itself, Nick Cave, The Beasts of Bourbon, Spy V Spy, Do Re Mi, The Johnny's , The All Nighters and The New Christs- they're all legendary names who, just like Roger, paved the way for the rise of alternative music in this country. He's not your run-of-the-mill music excecutive, far from it in fact. He's a punk rocker at heart who just made shit happen!

The awards and achievements are plentiful- Member of The Order Of Australia, ARIA Hall of Fame, French National Order of National Merit and I could go on- but what is most tangible and credible is the fact that she remains a passionate artist and role model to this day. She is a proud advocate for the Arts and she is a fearless exponent for Women's rights in the work place and in the music industry. She has a lot to say and she is both eloquent and straight forward at the same time. She speaks with genuine conviction and purpose and you'll know exactly where she stands on any issue or question you throw at her. Above all she is one of our greatest ever singers and musicians and one of our national living legends!

Nick Launay; Wizard of Sound

When I look at my 'favourite records of all time' list, it appears that Nick Launay has his magic fingerprints all over them. Whether it's 'Sound Affects' by The Jam (as an assistant engineer) or 'Release the Bats' by The Birthday Party or '10,9, 8, 7.." by Midnight Oil or even 'Diorama' by silverchair, they all have a timeless, transcendental quality. Put simply, Nick is one of the best ever record producers of our generation. His CV is vast, diverse and enthralling any way you look at it. His understanding of sound is visionary. And while that may sound like a double entendre, when I do listen to his works, I see colour and I see shape. His records and their accompanying stories are vivid and exciting. They take you on a journey and also take you back to the time/s when those records were actually made. You can smell the urgency, the vitality, the politics, the power on every release. He's a master and he's a true Wizard of Sound.

Michael Chugg; The General

In terms of concert promoters in this country and, arguably, the world over, you don't get much bigger than Michael Chugg. 'Chuggi' as he is known on every corner of the globe really is one in a million. You know that old cliche about 'the mould being smashed when they made him', well it rings true for Chuggi. He has been in the touring game for 59 long years and in that time he worked with so many of the greats- Sinatra, Elton John, Madonna, Neil Young , The Police, Billy Joel, Dylan- and this fact alone grants him living legends status. Whether it was setting up Frontier Touring with his good friend Michael Gudinksi or establishing the biggest Country Festival in the Southern Hemisphere (CMC Rocks) or launching his own Management and Label Arm (Chugg Entertainment), his love and enthusiasm for music and, in particular, Australian artists underpins both the craziness and sheer genius of the man. He's an ARIA icon, is a Member of The Order of Australia and a true pioneer in a world of very few.

Fifa was there from the start, when the label pivoted from simply selling sheet music to aspiring composers to becoming a global power house. Richie is a giant of the game, a proper pioneer of the dance scene in Australia. At heart, Richie is still a starry-eyed music fan and in essence, he has had (and continues to have ) a major impact on Dance culture. His events over the years- Apollo, Two Tribes , Hardware and Stereonic to name a few- are the stuff of folklore. Not only did they bring new dance music to the fore, but they shaped the careers of the people and artists involved in them. I've always seen Richie as part visionary, part King-maker and part mad man, all attributes that have combined to make him one of the most successful and respected promoters of his generation globally. It was cutting edge, irreverent, vital and game changing which, well, pretty much sums up Sahara's personal and professional journey in the music business and in life. This is a warts and all story. Sahara speaks from the heart like no one else I have managed to interview for this podcast. Simon Napier-Bell; The Pop Maestro

Simon Napier-Bell is a living legend in the global music industry. I was fortunate enough to meet him at the 'Big Sound' conference in Brisbane earlier this year and when he agreed to an interview, I didn't waste any time. For those who don't understand or know British Pop history, Simon has left an indelible mark on the music scene for decades. He's a record producer, artist manager, author, a proper music impresario. His list of credits is beyond imagination - Dusty Springfield, Jimmy Page and The Yardbirds, Marc Bolan of T-Rex, Sinead O'Connor and Wham- and that's just scratching the surface. Three aspects of his long and successful career stand out to me; the first is his brilliant novel "Black Vinyl, White Powder" ( a history of how drug culture helped shape the modern British music business), the second is the fact that he toured Wham! in 80's communist China at a time when no one said he could and thirdly, his connection to Australian pop which I had no idea about. I guess you have to tune in to find out which iconic Australian pop act he discovered by sheer accident!

Johann Ponniah; New Wunderkind On The Block!

Johann Ponniah is the founder of I OH YOU, a record label that has always oozed class and that has a real timeless edge with what it releases. The label itself was spawned from a Melbourne house party in 2009 that was thrown to pay off some utility bills for the share house Johann was living in at the time. That in itself tells you a lot about the man and his modus operandi. As the founding CEO of the UNIFIED Music Group, Jaddan Comerford has become a global industry player of the highest order. Millie Millgate; Thinking Global, Thinking Local!

They say timing is everything in this business, so it's somewhat serendipitous that my next guest on Vinyl Tap; Inside The Music Industry has just been announced as the inaugural Director of Music Australia, a government funded music body to support and promote the Australian contemporary music industry both here and abroad.

Mille Millgate's name is synonymous with the exporting of Australian music around the globe. As the former Executive Producer of Sounds Australia for 14 years, not only has she clocked up more frequent flyer points than anyone I know in the business but she has been able to help so many local acts in shaping and launching their international careers.

She's a Harvard Business graduate, a Eurovision judge and a board director for Support Act, but above all she's a bona fide champion of Australian music far and wide. In this interview, Millie sheds light on the many layers involved in exporting local music to the world and her passion and imagination is certainly infectious.

Linda Bosidis has been a real force in the music publishing world for all her working life. She started her career at APRA before joining Mushroom Music Publishing, where she has been for over 23 years. Today, she is the Managing Director of that very company and she is renown in the industry for her unbridled love and passion of Australian music. Her resume is drop-dead gorgeous, having worked with everyone from Vance Joy and The Teskey Bros to Garbage and The Chili Peppers, and her unassuming nature should not be taken for granted. She means and is the business!

John Watson; The Managers' Manager

John Watson really needs no introduction, as his CV and roster essentially speaks for itself. Combined, his artists such as Silverchair, Missy Higgins, Wolfmother, Pete Murray, Gotye, The Presets and Birds of Tokyo have sold over 20 million albums globally. Today, he continues to manage this roster plus Midnight Oil, Jimmy Barnes and Cold Chisel. He has a lot to say about the industry and also about future music trends; he also needs no prodding about speaking his mind.
