Years ago, Toto Wolff and Mercedes sought to secure their domination into the next era of Formula 1, after the turbo hybrid era had run its course. For 2026, two teams would arrive with Audi and Honda power in F1. One would struggle immediately and prove the Austrian right...and one wouldn't as much. Audi don't act like a completely new operation, much bigger than the Sauber team they inherited.

Word is that the FIA and teams realise these rules were too much, too soon. A 2.4 litre V8 turbo with synthetic fuels is currently the favourite amongst paddock gossip to replace the current hybrid setup for 2031...and yet that might not be good enough for some fans?

In this current arc of F1, the Mercedes team principal has made plenty of moves to get a type of Formula 1 that his group could thrive under...and with nobody powerful left to stop him politically, within the rules provided from the sport and the FIA. In hindsight, did Christian Horner or a figure LIKE him keep Toto in check? With Horner gone, Wolff seems unchecked...and he's proven to be quite a terrifying figure; keen to divide and conquer rather than remain the stoic observer of the peak of their feud with Red Bull.

Upon reflection, Mercedes' plan to dominate Formula 1 in the long term was conceived back in 2019 with their entry into Formula E...where none of their current rivals back then were competing. BYD and Geely have recently expressed interest in entering Formula 1 in the near future. Whilst coming in with billions of dollars is not practical in Formula One 2026, a steady introduction could be the way to go. Sort of similar to the Toyota model with Haas. First a technical parternship, then a brand partnership...then maybe more?

BYD is curious about the sport, Geely plans to give it another go with its Lotus brand; said marque reunified in recent times and making use of its heritage in recent campaigns. Could we see it return to Enstone after its departure in 2015? One thing is for sure, it will be a very steady easing in...and also, China doesn't need F1. F1 needs China.

After years of preparations, the initial template for Aston Martin-Honda's working partnership has failed. Specatcularly. Despite racking up more race laps than McLaren after the first two rounds of F1 2026, that's little comfort for the newly minted Formula 1 works team. Was this all too much too soon? After just two races, Red Bull's F1 car has proven to have more than just simple engine problems...everything is problematic! Formula 1 may not be anti-racing...but it could be anti WEIRD racing. What the first two Formula One races proved is that there can be some good contests for position as long as the cars aren't starved for energy thanks to the pitfalls of superclipping. The Chinese Grand Prix provided hope for the 2026 regulations...but Japan may not be so kind. However, with five weeks of no racing, the rules could lead to a reduction of battery power and a 60/40 split going forward. Could more changes come in time to quell doubts in the sport and ease the growing fervour of the four-time champion Verstappen, right when the seven-time champ Lewis Hamilton says the new rules are giving him cars that he enjoys immensely?

The debate has certainly gotten complicated.

Kimi Antonelli made history as Mercedes endured a flawed Saturday. The Italian coming back from a frought sprint race to pole position for the F1 Chinese Grand Prix tomorrow BESTING George Russell by a decent margin. 2026 was supposed to be the year where James Vowles had a team and car which looked normal. Not a race winner or title favourite, but at least a noticeable continuation of their overperforming 2025 car. However, what's become clear is that the F1 team grossly overestimated the task at hand at building a Formula One car for these new regulations...despite preparing for this long. Whilst the equipment and facilities HAVE improved a lot since the dark days of 2022, it's still not enough.

Talk of Max Verstappen retiring early is common...but the Formula 1 champion is not talking about that. Instead, what he is discussing could be more worrying for the Formula One organisers. Before the Formula 1 Chinese Grand Prix starts, there are plenty of talking points to discuss. Such as Ferrari bringing the attention-grabbing rear wing from Bahrain testing to China...as well as talk about their engine could be poised for further advances. Whilst the FIA is busy working on tweaks to the 2026 regulations after testing and the Australian Grand Prix, Formula One's commercial arm is busy putting out fires or smoothing things over. On top of that, new graphics were shown for the race itself and they were...less detailed than usual. Was this a test...or something more permanent for 2026?

Thusly, it's brought to my mind a sense of the technical and commercial brains of Formula One not being in step with one another. Whilst the sport's governing body has a plan potentially ready for the Japanese Grand Prix, fans and drivers are speaking up about their concerns and takes. Is F1 listening? Hard to say.

The first race of the new F1 regulations weren't entirely terrible. Action at the start was mad! Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton immediately throwing their team into the equation...but it fell flat due to an overly cautious run plan...expecting Formula 1 to be less reliable than it ultimately was. Meanwhile, George Russell and Kimi Antonelli led the way with Red Bull's Isack Hadjar conking out at the start...the world champion Lando Norris? Stuck in fifth.

After months of waiting, the first F1 qualifying of 2026 got started and...it felt like opposite day! At least in terms of Red Bull. Whilst Max Verstappen was thrust into the barrier by his car, his teammate Isack Hadjar flew the flag for the team and ALMOST got said car on the front row...not quite enough to best the Mercedes of George Russell or Kimi Antonelli, but still a valiant effort.

Meanwhile, Ferrari faded over the session whilst McLaren had a decent showing with Oscar Piastri leading the way. Audi overachieved despite a reliability issue and Racing Bulls showed that the Ford powertrain of theirs has legs after all! What else could we get from this Formula 1 outing before the big day?

When it comes to Formula 1's introduction to the 2026 regulations, it was not as shaky as it could've been. CERTAINLY not as much as it was in 2014. Whilst reliability did have wobbles, the car sounded pretty much the same as before...and the sound of the pecking order seems to point towards a very close battle for the top spot in this weekend's Australian Grand Prix!

Whilst Ferrari maintained its place as one of the leading teams, Mercedes and McLaren dropped some of their sandbags and laid down their pace; McLaren's Oscar Piastri ESPECIALLY drawing attention. Max Verstappen and Red Bull? Not bad at all...with hopeful signs their second seat curse might be easing....and their new charge Arvid Lindblad making a very big impression.

In a shocking twist, Aston Martin's team principal Adrian Newey conducted a press conference. There he laid his cards on the table and declared his car as unsafe (at least over a set period of laps as said by Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll). As a result, the focus has moved considerably! Whilst Honda has to find a solution, primarily, Newey also claims that if that weren't an issue, his car would already be capable of Q3. ALREADY. Sure, it's not winning races but for Aston? That's not bad to start.

And in all this? Fernando is the calmest one in the room. How things change.

After voicing his concerns regarding the 2026 Formula 1 regulations, Max Verstappen has upped the ante by showing concern regarding fan perception regarding the new rules...that it could bore fans or be hard to understand as easily as previous seasons or other motorsports. In that light, the FIA and Formula 1 might take action faster and it could redefine what being a Formula One champion might be all about.

In a very open and frank information drop, Honda Racing talked in detail about what went wrong with their power unit during Bahrain testing. The cause? The battery system got shook to bits. In terms of the grid for next season, it has the potential to be absolutely bonkers. Many drivers are up for a new deal or a need to find a new home in Formula 1...but if the pecking order maintains itself, based on testing, the overhaul of the Formula 1 driver lineup could be delayed for 2028. Should the top 4 pairings either be locked in already or satisfied, it may leave little room for movement throughout the remaining lineups.

After years of hype, the reality of becoming a works team for the first time in Team Silverstone's existence has hit like a freight train...with a team principal who wants nothing other than perfection. After finding some respite from the ongoing engine compression controversies, Mercedes are now facing a race against time anew. Theirs and their customer's fuel suppliers Petronas have yet to gain approval to use their 2026 fuel for their F1 cars. Eight drivers and four teams could be affected if the grant isn't approved by Australia.

Whilst this is something that can be sorted out in time, it's yet another hurdle to jump over...especially considering Shell, BP and ExxonMobil have already gotten their certificates in place.

Lap times don't matter...but tyre choices and lap counts kinda do. I want to look at what each F1 team has chosen for the final three days and deduce where they are at, now the baseline Formula 1 platforms are somewhat laid down. As Mercedes stares into the abyss of their engine facing FIA scrutiny, their boss has changed the subject by talking about how GOOD Red Bull and their Ford powertrain project is looking after the first day of the Bahrain pre-season F1 test. However, this is a little different to the usual sandbagging we usually think from Mercedes. Even though papaya rules faced resistance from many Formula 1 fans, McLaren are choosing to continue using them, albeit with some simple modifications...and Lando Norris' teammate is more than happy to comply...and that might be the culmination of years of understanding and following McLaren's principles to the letter...despite plenty of 'headaches' in 2025 for his own Formula One title campaign. With the first showcase of 2026 F1 cars behind us, we may not know times or the proper pecking order of teams...but Ferrari managed to throw some surprises in our way with their SAFE car. They might have a faster one if the FIA approves it. Could that be the thing that keeps them as the Mercedes challenger and Lewis Hamilton a chance for some proper Ferrari success in 2026 AND to keep Charles Leclerc for another year?

Then there's also the matter of Red Bull. Do they have a car and engine which pleases Max Verstappen? Well, for now, yes. The first Adrian Newey designed car from Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll's team introduced itself around Spain at the very end of the fourth day of Barcelona's F1 shakedown to great interest...but that all got muted by a precautionary end to proceedings just four or five laps later. Not the best start.

However, with Alonso increasing the lap count of Day 5, could the achievement of even making it to the test at all be a sign of the Formula 1's team ambition? The first launch event of F1 2026 kicked off in Detroit...and we saw a miracle: a Red Bull Racing car NOT in matte paint. Instead, a very detailed and shiny design mixing old and new as well as highlighting the partnership with Ford in a way that had never been emulated with Honda (except for the white bulls). The RB22, piloted by Max Verstappen and Isack Hadjar, looked wonderful and the team looked extremely optimistic for the Formula 1 season ahead.

As that was going the Racing Bulls VCARB03 launched...to a less favourable read. It was OK, but not as striking as last year. However, their presentation was very impressive and gave us a sign that this team definitely takes pride in its Gen Z and Alpha embracing.

Even though the shakedown wasn't about lap time and the Formula 1 car Audi brought to Barcelona was a very basic car, the act of testing and it going smoothly is the first test the team passed with flying colours. The test regarding professionalism after two green years which looked NOT professional is a huge turnaround which has been acclaimed by many Formula 1 fans. Mattia Binotto and Jonathan Wheatley have given Audi a platform in which to build a strong foundation, all the way down to their visual language.

As Haas moves closer toward Toyota in terms of co-operation within Formula 1, Ferrari is facing a reality where, come 2029, they could have ZERO customers in an engine formula...not ideal. With 2025 all over and done with, Lando Norris' future in F1 is the heart of many discussions. Where will we go after McLaren or will he ride with them forever...either in the 2030s on before the 2020s are over and done? Lando Norris' interview with the BBC was quite a curious piece. Joking that it was 'downhill from here'. Whilst said in jest, he's not wrong. Having the Monaco and Silverstone Grand Prix in the same year, there isn't much left to do for the typical Formula 1 driver...but Lando isn't typical.

Winning more races and Formula One championships his way could redefine what upcoming racers see as the definition of success and glory in single seaters. The McLaren driver could have a major impact on said future...if not? No matter, he says.

In the last couple of weeks, Red Bull-Ford Powertrians has gained HEAPS of credibility. Not only for pioneering a technique which only the title-favourites Mercedes have seized, but also doing so underneath a cost cap situation for the 2026 F1 regulations related to the new engines. That's a big deal...and something which Max Verstappen surely approves of. At least he definitely likes how the car's motor sounds; a major worry for many Formula 1 fans after the debacle of 2014.

Here's why this, as well as Ford's confidence in its work with Red Bull Racing points to a reality where Max Verstappen does NOT abandon the team before his 2028 term ends.

During the holidays, an auction took place. One which saw McLaren Racing generate nearly $20m in selling off examples of its Formula One car, its 2027 WEC car and its 2026 Indycar chassis. In the case of the F1 car, the MCL40A, it manifested $11.4m...even though it doesn't exist yet...and the customer will not receive ownership proper until 2028 when the car itself becomes irrelevant and may or may not be successful for either Oscar Piastri or Lando Norris of the team itself.

Next year's driver market is going to be bananas and Charles Leclerc's camp knows this. In a similar position to Max Verstappen over at Red Bull, the Ferrari furniture driver is weighing up his options understandably. Why WOULDN'T you at least look? It could mean his 2029 endpoint may never be met if Ferrari do not throw the SF25 concept in the bin. Dr Helmut Marko, having won out against Christian Horner for control of Red Bull Racing realised his influence was weaker than he thought...or was never there to begin with. Not one week since his departure from the F1 team, the Austrian rails against the nature of his leaving and produces one last diatribe against it and Christian Horner. Yes, it's not a full-on works team, but Toyota Gazoo Racing has stepped up its collaboration with Haas to transform Gene's team into TGR Haas F1 Team for the 2026 Formula One season. This is more than a simple increase in Toyota stickers on the car; but the pinnacle of what's been going on for the last 12 months or so. The realisation of a proper driver program in the junior formulae AND the success of Haas having a proper test team in Japan with access to Fuji Speedway AND finally having its own simulator, not having to borrow stuff from Ferrari so much anymore.

Whilst team principal Andrea Stella discussed that no team orders would be in place for the rest of the F1 season, including Qatar, a quiet technical answer was given in the wake of the team's disqualification in Las Vegas for that grand prix. The McLaren team boss claimed to be in dicussion with the FIA, the sport's governing body, to perhaps relax sanctions regarding breaking of rules related to technical faults...instead of being a simple good or no good situation.

Quite frankly, this is a very controversial subject and one entrenched in the legacy of Ayrton Senna and his passing in 1994. A slippery slope.

McLaren said it was a mistake, but in reality, it was a greedy gamble in the midst of a lack of data due to practice being limited for the 2025 F1 Las Vegas GP. As a result, what became a smooth ride into the Middle Eastern races has become a more nervous siutation for Lando Norris with BOTH his title rivals still in contention. Not only that, but McLaren must avoid the same mistakes occuring again at a grand prix with only ONE practice session. This means Max Verstappen has nothing to lose.

This was one of the most intense qualifying sessions of the F1 2025 season with Lewis Hamilton the biggest loser out of all the drivers tiptoeing around the famous landmark. The circuit didn't give us teammate Charles Leclerc much to smile about either! Meanwhile, both Racing Bulls once again nailed Q3 to cement P6 in the team title that little bit more whilst Lando Norris? Last week, the FIA approved relaxing rules regarding driver numbers; something which has been permanent since 2014. How? We do not know...but what we DO know is that Max Verstappen wants to get in on it and replace his number 33 with number three...which belonged to a certain proper Australian happy-man. That has now thrown the world into a tailspin and questions the value of personal numbers if they can be changed mid-career.
