Natalia Molchanova (Russian: Наталья Вадимовна Молчанова) was a Russian champion free diver, multiple world record holder, and the former president of the Russian Free Dive Federation. Natalia was the world’s most decorated free diver, holding 41 world records and winning 23 gold medals during her career.

Free diving is considered one of the deadliest extreme sports. Free divers may descend more than 300 ft (100 m) without using an oxygen tank. At such depths, a diver’s heart rate begins to slow, their blood vessels shrink and their lungs compress. Divers often have to be helped to the surface and revived because diving to such depths squeezes the lungs and can cause major damage..

More than 2,500 passengers and crew members were on board, filled with anticipation for the day's excursion and picnic. In just minutes, 844 people lost their lives, including 22 entire families.

The Andrea Doria is considered one of the most dangerous wrecks to dive. At least 22 scuba divers have lost their lives diving on the wreck. Almost since the day it sank, the Andrea Doria has been a beacon for treasure hunters and adventure seekers. It offers the lure of history, artifacts — and danger.

Diving conditions at the wreck site are considered very treacherous. Strong currents and heavy sediment can reduce visibility to zero and pose serious hazards to diving, making it hard to navigate around the 700 foot long ship. Holes in and out of the Andrea Doria have opened and closed through the years on the decaying wreck, making it easy to get lost and disoriented. Thick fishing nets drape over the hull of the ship. An invisible web of thin fishing lines, which can snag scuba gear, pose another danger. The ship’s depth also puts it well below the limit recommended for recreational divers.

Diving Gone WRONG: The Wildrake Diving Accident

The Wildrake diving accident was an incident near Scotland in August 1979 that killed two American commercial divers. During a routine dive in the East Shetland Basin of the North Sea, the diving bell of the diving support vessel MS Wildrake became separated from its main lift wire at a depth of over 520 ft (160 m). Although the bell was eventually recovered by Wildrake, its two occupants, 32-year-old Richard Arthur Walker and 28-year-old Victor Francis "Skip" Guiel Jr., died of hypothermia. The accident resulted in extensive subsequent litigation and led to important safety changes in the diving industry.

Tilikum was taken captive from the wild in 1983 and died at SeaWorld in 2017. In February 2010, Tilikum killed his trainer Dawn Brancheau during a performance at SeaWorld Orlando. The incident became the focus of the 2013 documentary Blackfish and sparked public outcry about the mistreatment of captive orcas. But this was not the first time Tilikum had killed. Tilikum had been involved in not just one, but two previous deaths. In 1991, the orca killed another trainer, and in 1999, a trespasser. Yet, it was difficult to blame Tilikum. He was an orca, an apex predator, subjected to a demanding schedule of training and performances and used in captive breeding efforts.

On the afternoon of November 17, 2013, at Dean’s Blue Hole in the Bahamas, 32-year-old American freediver Nicholas Mevoli became the first in his sport to die in an international competition. Tragedy at Sea: The 1973 Johnson Sea Link Submarine Accident

During a seemingly routine dive off Key West in June 1973, the submersible Johnson Sea Link was trapped for over 30 hours in the wreckage of the destroyer USS Fred T. Berry, which had been sunk to create an artificial reef. Although the submersible was eventually recovered by the rescue vessel A.B. Wood II, two of the four occupants died of carbon dioxide poisoning: 31-year-old Edwin Clayton Link (son of Edwin Albert Link, the submersible's designer) and 51-year-old diver Albert Dennison Stover. The submersible's pilot, Archibald "Jock" Menzies, and ichthyologist Robert Meek survived.

On October 28, 2004, two cave divers and long-time friends, Don Shirley and David Shaw, nicknamed “Dave”, planned a dive at Boesmansgat (also known in English as “Bushman’s Hole”) a deep, submerged freshwater cave in the Northern Cape province of South Africa. Dave dove to 886 ft (270 m), touched the bottom and started exploring. At that time, Dave had broken four records at one time, including depth in a cave on a rebreather. While on the dive, he found a body that had been there for nearly ten years, 20-year-old diver Deon Dreyer.
