Speakers are members of:

A musical group from Latin America countries gathering to play cumbia music, Sevdah Choir Rosa from former Yugoslavia counties singing traditional Bosnian music, both aiming to preserve and spread elements of their culture. Zavod Tri, an NGO supporting migrant women with integration to new environment trough Slovene language courses and projects like textile threading community, etc. Ambasada Rog, a bottom up organization and community centre of refugees, workers and activists from all over the world running on a volunteer basis and struggling against all forms of exploitation.

The episode consists of fragments of interviews with members of listed communities, talking about their lives in Slovenia, their (political) struggles, challenges and positive effects of being members of supportive communities.

ESOL Learners Organising in UK

In the last episode of the Community Organising For All podcast, Adela Belecova, English language (ESOL) teacher and community organiser at English for Action talks to migrant language learners, Adiam, Ania, Lian, Pawan and Maria Elisa about the barriers they face as migrants in London and the organising they are involved in, including struggles for better housing and more accessible English language provision. The ESOL students share how their involvement in organising actions and meetings has improved their language skills and confidence and enabled them to win change for themselves and their communities.

Iris Breward, community organiser at the Centre for Progressive Change also shares her reflections on how organisers can make training and activities more accessible to migrants with developing language skills.

This episode gathers examples of different forms of community organising with and within migrant communities in Slovenia. It introduces four different communities and community organising initiatives, presents their activities and explains how the involvement benefits lives of their members.

In this episode of the "Community Organising for All Podcast," we explore the dynamic landscape of community organising in Croatia. Our guests, each with their unique experiences, come from diverse backgrounds and share their remarkable journeys of bringing people together to address local issues. Sunil Bam is a driving force behind the formation of a Nepali organisation in Croatia. He has been a catalyst in connecting his community with unions, media, and other organisations, and he sheds light on the challenges of language barriers and worker issues. Chandrelle Salamiat's story is one of resilience. She faced the daunting challenge of navigating the Croatian bureaucracy and the intricacies of the language - her determination led to the establishment of a new organisation. Representing the Roma community in Croatia, Rosa Oršuš's journey focuses on the struggles of Roma youth in the education system. She created a forum theatre performance to address the specific barriers faced by Roma girls, and she emphasizes the importance of building alliances for the community's advancement. All of the stories focus on challenges, successes and paths we need to forge while moving forward. The individual stories are connected by Dinko Kreho’s political and historical analysis of community organising in Croatia.

What is Community Organising?

In this first episode, Dermot Bryers, community organiser at Citizens UK and founder of English for Action, talks to Roberto Mazzini (Giolli Cooperative, Italy), Adela Belecova (English for Action, UK), Metka Bahlen Okoli (Zavod BOB, Slovenia) and Doria Jukić (Pokaz, Croatia) about what community organising is, the forms it takes in their respective national contexts and their own involvement in community organising initiatives.

Although the term 'community organising' is not widely used in Italy, Slovenia or Croatia, our speakers agree that the method of bringing about social change by coming together as communities, and putting 'people before programme' is common to each of their national contexts. You will hear how historical legacies of socialist self-management and worker organising in former Yugoslav countries shapes organising there today and the risks associated with organising under contemporary capitalist conditions.

Adela, Roberto, Metka and Doria also share how the traditions of radical critical pedagogy and Theatre of the Oppressed inform their work as they bring together adult language education and Forum Theatre to strengthen and develop their organising.
