It's interesting to see the ask laid out from day one from Conny, to the coaching staff, to the leadership group, and how it translated to on ice results in retrospect. Conny and Huska challegned the boys to be the hardest working team in the league this year and leave it all on the ice...and the message was well received...maybe there truly is a culture shift happening in Calgary.

Episode 14 - What's the Deal with Grit?

It seems nowadays you can't have a nuanced opinion on anything. You either have to believe in the old school mentality of heart and toughness or you are an analytics witness and swear the only thing that really matters is hard data on skill. But sports and hockey are played by humans and humans have unique mental abilities and psychology. In this episode we try to break down grit as a concept. What it is grit and does it provide value? Can it be properly defined? Most importantly can it or does it help you win? We try to look at how certain aspects of 'grit' can be quantified, defined, and assessed.

Episode 13 - Noah Hanifin Deep Dive

Noah Hanifin is an interesting player due to his draft position (fifth overall in 2015) and skill set.

He has played a ton since entering the NHL as an 18 year old in 2015 with the Hurricanes. After spending 3 years with the Hurricanes playing behind the likes of Jacob Slavin, Brett Pesce, and Justin Faulk, Hanifin was moved to the Flames in a 5 player deal and was subsequently signed as an RFA to a 6 year, 29.7 million dollar contract.

Hanifin has been a bit of an enigma. Again, drafted 5th overall, he has not quite lived up to expectations but has shown promise and room to develop. He has struggled mightily at times defensively but saw his offensive rates and shot contributions improve greatly in his 3rd year in Carolina putting up a career high 10 goals. His ability to transition the puck has been his greatest strength both in Carolina and Calgary.

In his first season in Calgary, Hanifin played most of his time with Travis Hamonic on the 2nd pairing and the two meshed well together forming a reliable and decent tandem. Hanifin continued his strong offensive play leading the team in many shot rate statistics. Conversely, he struggled away from Hamonic and was extremely poor in shot suppression rates, including an abysmal playoff.

Hopefully at age 22 he still has the ability to develop into a legitimate top 4, possible top pairing defenceman. If he can continue his offensive contributions and improve his defensive game, the Flames could have an elite transition defender as a part of their core group for years to come.

The Athletic published results from a survey gauging fan and public confidence in NHL front offices based on the criteria of: roster building, cap management, drafting/developing, free agency, trading, and vision. The Flames came in at 16th out of 31. With the historical record of bad free agent signings, poor asset management, and loss of multiple draft picks, do Brad Treliving and company need to start facing some serious heat?

EVERYBODY loves the clean design of the classic red, white, yellow; yet throughout the history of the team they've been relegated to third jersey or retro night jersey in favour of some real eyesores.

Episode 9 - Sam Bennett Deep Dive

Sam Bennett is an interesting case study. Sam was Calgary’s 2014 4th overall pick. He was the #1 Ranked North American player going into the draft. He put up solid numbers as a 16 year old in his first Major Junior season, and had an exceptional season as a 17 year old. His third year was overshadowed by a controversial injury.

He made his Flames debut by scoring 3 playoff goals (plus 1 assist) in 11 games in the 2014/15 season series win over Vancouver and followed that up with 18 goals in his rookie season. He has struggled with consistency and scoring throughout his 4 full NHL seasons and has not been able to replicate his goal and point totals in his rookie season. His underlying numbers and counting stats are both just OK and he seems to have found role on the third line. He is still a physical player who can get the puck to scoring areas but has been no where close to what we or the Flames projected him to be.

Is he now a known quantity or does he still have room to develop?
